Basic Kernel Question

2000-10-25 Thread Jay Kelly
Hello All,
I keep running into a problem everytime I upgrade my kernel. Before I
upgrade I can place a floppy into the drive and type mount /dev/fd0 /floppy
with no errors. After the upgrade I do the same command I get an error about
needing to specifiy the file format. What am I missing when I upgrade my
kernel. Also I would like to add a basic firewall to just protect itself. I
dont need ipmasq I just want to close all ports except one. What will I need
to add to the kernel?
Thanks everybody

Boot single user and attempt to start the daemon in debug mode from the
command line. man syslogd for more info.

Startup hangs are very often DNS resolution timeouts. What happens if
you give your system five or ten minutes to boot, does the hang clear?

I have Sendmail running as a MX'ed mailserver. I had a problem with
sending mail out from a client with a error "relay-denied" amd I fix
it by adding the ip addresses of my clients. When I try to have mail
sent to me I am unable to reteive it. The maili never shows up an the
mailbox appears empty. I tried running sendmailconfig again and
noticed a error after completing the configuration.

I tried touch /etc/mail/users and then put a users in /etc/mail/users
and ran sendmailconfig again. This time I had a error:

How can I add all my users to the sendmail userlist? I assume this is
why I am unable to receive mail for all my accounts. I cant even

IRQ conflict with soundcard

2000-07-15 Thread Jay Kelly
Hello all,
Im trying to get the soundcard to install. Im using kernel 2.2.16
and am installing a SoundBlaster 16. I have enabled the options in
the kernel and selested them as modules. I cat /proc/interrupts and it shows
the sound card on irq 7. Then I want to the isapnp.conf and remove the
# from in front of irq 7. Then I ran isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf and it
came back with no errors. I then tried to reboot and then I see:
soundBlaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen 1993-1996
SB 4.13 detected OK (220)
-- sb: Interrupt test on IRQ7 failed - Probable IRQ conflict.

So then I ran the cat /proc/interrupts and I didnt see any conflicts.
What am I missing here. I tried the mail archives and HOWTO but
was unable to find anything really usefull.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Running Samba as a PDC

Hello Group,
I have samba running as my Domain Controller and Im using Windows98

name will be the domain name for windows users. So I have something

windows. So is there
any way to add a different name domain to samba without changing
the workgroup. If I change workgroup in the smb.conf to the
domain I want, I can no longer see the samba server in Network
Niehorhood. Not a big deal but I would like to get it working.

samba Passwords

2000-07-07 Thread Jay Kelly
Hello Group,
Well thanks to the list I got Samba working for the most part.
It seems I didnt have the smb.conf configured right. I have a shared
directory that I can access fine but when I try to access the
/home/user directory I am promt for a password. I then enter
the password but it fails. I looked in the smbpasswd file but its
empty. So I tried "smbpasswd neutec" but after entering the pass I
receive an error that it failed to add it. So my first question is
how to add new users to Samba ? And I read somewhere that if I want to
share a CD-Rom I will need to add something to the fstab file. What
do I need to add there ? I cant find the man page on this. And for
my last question, Does anyone know where I can get some info on
setting up Samba as a Domain Controller?
Thanks again guys for all your help.

Kernel upgrade

2000-07-05 Thread Jay Kelly
Hello Group,
I decided to upgrade my kernel from 2.2.12 to 2.2.15 and ran into a
problem. This is what Im doing.
I extract the kernel while im in the /usr/src/ directory. Then I
made a directory /usr/src/linux-2.2.15 and then cd /usr/src/linux-2.2.15
and ln -s linux-2.2.15 linux.
After doing that I cd /usr/src/linux and run make menuconfig. That
seems to work fine and I save the kernel. After saving I use
make deb;make clean;make bzImage;make modules;make modules_install.
and that seems to compile fine. Now here is the problem.
I cd /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot then
cp bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.15 but I get file or directory does not
exist. Apparently the vmlinuz-2.2.15 isnt there. I can see the old
vmlinuz-2.2.12 but thats it. I have compiled many systems this way
before. Any idea's on what Im doing wrong? Im running potato if
that helps.

I want to enable my potato box as a ftp server, I have removed proftpd
and installed ftpd. I remember when install debian I said no to
start the FTP server. Where do I enable this to start the server at
boot time? Also is it true the enabling the ftp server will open
up my server for attacks? How much security will be lost doing this?
I want to enable anonymous login so I link my web to the ftp server.
I read the man pages anf there is very little on setting this up.
Thanks Guys for all your help.

SSH

2000-06-21 Thread Jay Kelly
Hello Group,
I just installed ssh using apt-get install ssh and after it was installed
ssh says your identification has been saved in /etc/ssh/ssh_host_key. Your
public key has been saved in /etc/ssh/ssh_host_key.pub. Now the question, in
the past I have used ssh_genkey command to generate my RSA key. if I do that
now should I delete all the other keys. I want to use Tera Team Pro on a
windows machine to connect via a secure shell. Everytime I try to connect
after copying the key over I still am not able to connect. I use genkey the
copy it over to authorize_keys and take the identity key to my windows
machine. So what are the steps needed to make this work?
Thanks

get another error:
/dev/hda1: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY: RUN fsck MANUALLY.
so how do I fix this? Was this coaused by Hale Life I installed? And how do
I run fsck?
Thanks guys

SSH

2000-06-12 Thread Jay Kelly
Hello All,
Ok Im working on logining in with a secure shell. My system is running
Potato with kernel 2.2.15. I have installed ssh and tried ssh localhost to
make sure everything is working and I have no problems. So I continue to
generate a RSA key with ssh-keygen. I save the key into ~/ssh and copied the
identity.pub key into authorized_keys. Then I copy the identity to a floppy
and install it on my remote machine. I using Tera Term to connect and I am
unable to connect. I receive Authenication failed. Does anyone have tip on
troubleshooting this? I have reinsttall ssh and made several didddernt keys.

Fetchmail/exim will throw your mail away silently if you don't have
'localhost' in your local_domains. I assume the same would happen if
sendmail didn't have 'localhost' in $=w (though I've never tested this).

What's in your /etc/mail/local-host-names file?

Sendmail Config

2000-06-03 Thread Jay Kelly
Ok Guy's,
I need some help with sendmail. I use sendmailconfig and for the first
question "mail Name" I choose Pacbell.net. That's what I think I need to
use? my email is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Then I come to start host. I want my
linux box to download mail from my ISP and store it until I log on. When I
use a program such as Outlook I use "mail.pacbell.net" for incoming mail and
"postoffice.pacbell.net" for outgoing mail. When I send a email I would like
it to say [EMAIL PROTECTED] Where will I put this information? Also where
do I setup my login and pass for my ISP so I can download mail. I have been
trying everything with no luck. I would really really appreciate if someone
would help me on this.

Compile problems

2000-06-02 Thread Jay Kelly
Can someone tell me the steps needed to compile a kernel. I am having
problems with Unresolved symbols. I first run 'make config' and select the
option I want. Then I use'make dep' 'make clean; after that I compile the
kernel with 'make bzImage' then I use 'make bzlilo; The 'make modules;make
modules_install' and reboot. Evertime I get some kind of Unresolved symbol.
And help would be great..
Thanks

compile error

2000-06-02 Thread Jay Kelly
Hello All,
Quick question. When I compile my kernel 2.2.12 I use "make dep" the "make
clean" then "make bzimage or make bzdisk" and I receive an errror at the end
of the compile:

make[1]: Entering directory '/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot'
as86 -0 -a -o bbootsect.o bbootsect.s
make[1]: as86: Command not found
make[1]: *** [bboot.o] Error 127
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot'
make: *** [bzdisk] Error 2

So what do you guys think? The whole reason Im compiling is to remove an
error I have when boot with the modules and adding ip-masq.
Thanks Guys

A simple approach would be to put "exec gnome-session" in your ~/.xinitrc

Note that this will just install the GNOME display manager; it won't
install any of the rest of the GNOME stuff that gdm doesn't directly need.

It's probably trying to run 'gnome-session' and failing, since that
isn't installed. 'apt-get install gnome-session' will get you that,
for a kind of minimalist GNOME environment. What you probably really
want to install is the 'task-gnome-desktop' package, which contains
nothing in and of itself but depends on the standard GNOME desktop
tools. You also might want 'task-gnome-apps' or 'task-gnome-games'.
Looking at these packages in dselect (hit 'i' while that line is
selected) will show you what they depend on if you don't want to
install the task package but do want some of the other things.

Same deal, but it's gdm and not xdm. I assume that you want to
manually start gdm after a console login; otherwise, something with
ordering 99 is as close to "after the machine is booted" as you can get.

On slink it's /etc/init.d/network, which is set up nicely
IFF you identify and configure your network card during
installation.  A fairly standard example is attached;
if you don't have one customise this one then place it
in /etc/init.d and run

# chmod a+rx /etc/init.d/network
# update-rc.d network start 40 S .

pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf

Once get the information from pnpdump, it should be at the end of each
device configuration set.

A note, you may have problems with isapnp say that there are fatel
irq, and io errors, even if you know that that address is not being
used. To fix this, add (ACT N) at the beginning of each device
section. Let me know if you have problems.

> 3) How do I make sure the isapnp is run at bootup?

If there is a working /etc/isapnp.conf, it will be used at bootup.
There is a script that runs it. This is for sure for potato. I can't
remember if this is true for slink.

Good Luck

Sound Question

2000-05-25 Thread Jay Kelly
I am trying to setup a SoundBlaster16 sound card, I have recomplied the
kernel for sound and pnp support. Now I see the howto is telling me to:

Use pnpdump to capture the possible settings for all your Plug and Play
devices, saving the result to the file /etc/isapnp.conf.
Choose settings for the sound card that do not conflict with any other
devices in your system and uncomment the appropriate lines in
/etc/isapnp.conf. Don't forget to uncomment the (ACT Y) command near the
end.
Make sure that isapnp is run when your system boots up, normally done by one
of the startup scripts. Reboot your system or run isapnp manually.

1) after using the 'pnpdump' how do I save it to the /etc/isapnp.conf.

2) Where do I uncomment the (ACT Y) command? I didnt see it.

3) How do I make sure the isapnp is run at bootup?

Thanks Guys

could you say _precisely_ what you have done (commands, output)?

the normal procedure to configure and compile a kernel is:
- download the kernel source
- cd /usr/src/linux
- "make menuconfig dep install modules modules_install"
or something similar.
