Re: Novell Linux Resource Kit Offer

2004-07-15 Thread adcarlson
I jumped right on the bandwagon the first email I heard of this thing (about a
month ago). I emailed a friend at the same time, and with the lag of about a
day or so, the site blocked up with people trying to sign up for it.

Nevertheless mine came in late last week...3 nice DVDs...Now I can switch from
Libranet (Debian based) back to SuSE. Ooops...I'm saying this on a Debian
list. Actually I'm game to dual (or should I say triple) boot both. I started
my Linux use on SuSE, and have fond memories of the easy to use installs. Its
the continual update costs (new versions 3 or 4 times a year at $40US+ per) that
prompted me to switch to Linux distros I could download freely off the
Internet.

Gnome Crash

2004-03-10 Thread adcarlson
It seems that I have caused Gnome to crash permanently. I had inadvertently
dragged a copy of an item from the menu, and put it into the TRASH and then
emptied it.

At that point Gnome crashed. Any reattepts to login to a Gnome (2.4) setup
bringing up a Gnome-panel crash. I've had to resort to KDE.

I've tried blowing away all that I think is Gnome related (including stuff from
/tmp as well!), and then reinstalling clean files from what /etc/skel would
install for a new user. To no avail! Same crash situation.

And any other users I've got (and new users) do now have such a problem.

Any help would be appreciated...especically in tracking down where the key
items for gnome-panel are in a typical user's directory.

Thanks,
Arlen

I highly recommend Nvidia stuff. Excellent Linux support. Matrox is good for

To add my bit to the matter:

When setting up a friend's Win XP machine, I stumbled across the fact that
IEEE1394 can actually be used in networking. So obviously this applies to all

RE: No to wine! (was:"Red Hat recommends...")

2003-11-15 Thread adcarlson
I was an avid OS/2 user at one time, until technology moved on and the logical
switch for most OS/2 users was Linux.

Your thoughts on using Win3.1 and OS/2 are interesting...except that Win3.1 was
known to run better under OS/2. The reason was problem because IBM did a
work-around for the bugs that existed (or corrected them in the blue box
version). Thus I rarely if ever booted into DOS+Win3.1 The stable solution was
almost inevitably run Win3.1 under OS/2. And the most stable was the old blue
box version of course, instead of having to install Win3.1 separately and have
OS/2 install and look for it.

Why switch? SuSE is a great product, and easy to support. I would probably

SIIG SCSI Card

2002-06-23 Thread adcarlson
I just recenctly purchased a SIIG Fast SCSI Pro (PCI) card. It claims it has
Linux support, in the manual and on SIIG's website. Apparently either Advansys
or Initio chipsets are used in these cards. Trying to install the kernel
module for either of these SCSI chipsets has been unsuccessful.

Is there any particular paramter I should be entering along with the
installation of the module? So far any parameters seem to result in an error.

Is it possible that the plain vanilla kernel (2.4.17-K6II) may not actually be
set up with either of these relevant modules linked into the kernel, therefore
requiring me to do a kernel configure & compile?

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Re: Linksys Wireless WDT11 w/ Woody

Although I don't own these products I had them under serious consideration to
buy and may still buy them. Any research that I've done on their use on Linux
indicates that their support is fair to excellent, and probably even so under a
2.2 kernel.

I would recommend doing a bit of research on Linux and wireless first. A few
quick links will take you to sites based on the subject. And if memory serves
me correct, Linksys may even have Linux drivers on their site.

BTW, I have tried that Linksys Router you mention, and it does work very well

Re: Browsers won't connect to modem

2002-02-16 Thread adcarlson
Sounds to me like you may have a problem with a gateway IP # being set up...at
least that's one possibility. As an example, I have this problem on my
notebook; when my notebook is connected to the small network I have set up, I
use my desktop machine as a gateway (its IP). But if I use the notebook
elsewhere (not network connected) and dial-up using its modem, then I have to
make sure that it has the gateway IP disabled. If not, I get the same problem
that you are presently getting.

You mentioned you just reinstalled...so perhaps such a gateway address got
inadvertently entered in the setup process...

Re: Warning: Int 0x13 function 8 ...

2001-12-29 Thread adcarlson
Hmm...I've noticed this error too in instances when its been time for e2fsck to
run during boot-up. IIRC, it even predates my 2.4 series kernel use...i.e. I
think it occurred under 2.2.17. LILO version related?--not sure of that either.

But what I can say is that I've never seemed to have the error create any
operational problems for me.

Yet, now that you mention it, I would be interested in the reason behind this
error.

Re: evolution and debian

2001-12-04 Thread adcarlson
As a suggestion, after having the experience of trying to get evolution up and
working last night (stil not quite successful), there are a number of
dependencies to the evolution DEB file (which is supposed to be for Potato?)
that appear only in Testing/Woody and Unstable/Sid.

In short, you'll probably at least need to make sure that you've updated to
Testing, and possibly even Unstable, to make Evolution work.

A strange phenomenon I just came across after upgrading to the 2.4 series
(version 12) from having used 2.2.17 for the longest time...my sound incluing
user of RealPlayer w/ Netscape had worked fine. Now it doesn't...or more
correctly RealPlayer sound has stopped working. All the other aspects of sound
use appear to be okay so far.

Any ideas/solutions would be much appreciated.

RE: /bin/sh broken - now what?

2001-11-25 Thread adcarlson
Try to find out if your /bin/sh is symbolically linked to bash, ash, korn, or
whatever other shell. /bin/sh should be just a symbolic link...if it isn't
linked, link it to something like bash.

I had a problem when I upgraded to the 2.4.12 kernel and the update asked
whether I wanted to go with the default POSIX standard ash instead of bash. I
answered yes, and then my automated dialup scripts wouldn't work for the next
day until I relinked to bash (my scripts were bash specific I guess).

Re: working icq client for debian?

2001-11-20 Thread adcarlson
Its interesting that I've observed a lot complain about this...to my knowledge
there are often problems in sending through the ICQ server as opposed to
directly (when using LICQ for instance). I've never heard of any problems
where a Windows client totally refuses messages from a Linux ICQ client
specifically.

In short, if sending through the server gives you problems try sending
directly...if sending directly gives you problems try sending through the
server.

I don't believe it is a refusal on the part of the Windows client per sec.

I experienced the same problem, and to make WP8 work again I,

apt-get delete xlib6

and then...

dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/xlib6_3.3.6-38_i386.deb

NOTE: The defective version of the above file seems to be "version 39".
Basically I had to roll back to the previous version. Now WP8 is back in

Kernel version in Debian FTP

2001-11-17 Thread adcarlson
With kernel 2.4.15 on the verge or release (if it hasn't been already) and its
inherent attractiveness of having ext3 I'm finally tempted to install a 2.4.x
kernel (yes I sheepishly admit I'm still running a 2.2.x kernel).

However I've noticed that the Debian FTP site (Woody version) only seems to have
as high as a 2.2.12 kernel right now...why is this? How soon will 2.4.15 be
reflected on there? Although I haven't checked yet, would the Sid directories
have the 2.4.15 kernel images (and source of course) there?

Re: Progeny->Woody Upgrade Alternatives?

Looking at the recommendations for the upgrade on the Progeny site, I wonder if
the noted specific install of modutils/modconf is what is necessary to correct
this PCMCIA problem (i.e. at which point you would have to run modconf and
specifically make sure the module for PCMCIA is getting loaded in).

I've got Progeny on my notebook right now, and hoping to do the update to Woody
in the next week or so...but holding off right now until I know that I won't
have any seriously insurmountable problems like this one...

Why don't you "upgrade" from Potato to Woody (aka presently Testing). Then
that will resolve your library problem without the workaround. Interestingly
I've successfully installed Kylix under Progeny, on my notebook, and Progeny is

The LC thing being set to C has to be changed.

As well, I found I could not install on my Potato-based desktop system (which
I've just upgraded to Woody...and therefore have to try a Kylix install on

RE: Why is Debian lagging so much behind Slackware?

2001-08-15 Thread adcarlson
I'd say go with Woody (compared to Slack), provided you can do a boot off of
CD...I wasn't aware of the boot-disk issue. I started with Potato about 8
months ago, and just apt-get updated to Woody in the last few weeks.

Tried Slack way back (a number of years ago) and found it more difficult for a
newbie (I was that at the time). For a true newbie, I'd say go SuSE, or
Mandrake. After cutting your teeth on a version, then slide into Debian (or
something Debian based...like Progeny). In short, I've never been impressed
with Slackware.

RE: A problem

2001-08-08 Thread adcarlson
I'm in the process of trying to apt-get dist-upgrade by Debian system from
Potato to Woody-Testing, and seem to have stumbled across the "roadblock"
shown below that has limited my progress...

If anyone has any suggestions on how this matter might be resolved it
would be much appreciated. Early on I thought it was a Perl problem, but that
turned out (to my knowledge) to be a Perl problem that developed in the
apt-get upgrade process where Perl seemed to get partially deleted.

97% [Scanning packages]Template parse error near "" at
 /usr/lib/perl5/Debian/DebConf/Template.pm line 102, chunk 3.
(in cleanup) Can't call method "DESTROY" on an undefined value at
 /usr/lib/perl5/Debian/DebConf/Question.pm line 251, line 3 during
 global destruction.
 E: Sub-process /usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure --apt returned an error code (29)
E: Failure running script /usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure --apt
