But have anyone tried https?
I only get a blank window where there should be certificate
information.

(Maybe it is a general Netscape problem and doesn't concern this list.)

Well, true, but it was linked against Motif 1.2 which make it useless
for most of us who has Motif 2.0 :(

Works with lesstif too? ;)

I have seen several posts which claimed this couldn't be done. What
steps would one need to take to get this working?

What do you mean? Making Lesstif and Motif binary compatible?
You must have OSF source for that :)

Communicator 4.01b6 works great here too! However, it seems to be a
memory hog, and the memory usage just keeps growing, sometimes up to 40 MB
virtual memory (?) (and X was taking over 30 MBs by then too) and by that
time I would just quit and restart Netscape so I wouldn't run out of
memory. Maybe part of the reason is that I am using some big Chinese
fonts? :) But other than that, it is one of the most stable release!
The response was fast and quick too! The thing that slows it down was all
the swapping and grinding that my hard drive makes. (I have 32 MB RAM and
64 MB swap; Netscape and X together use over half of that... :)

Anyway, for some reason, 4.0b5 was very unstable on my computer. It
crashed very often. Maybe it wasn't built for libc 5.4.33? ^_^

Just delete libnullplugin.so (or rename it) and it still works but

Netscape Communicator 4.01b6 works fine

1997-07-03 Thread Victor Torrico
The new Netscape Communicator 4.01b6 installs nicely using the Debian
netscape-beta package. It seems to be very stable but then again I
never had problems with Communicator 4.0b5. Of course you must first
delete the /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape link and then make a new soft link to
ln -s /usr/local/netscape/netscape /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape and all
will be well.

I live off the unstable directory so this may be why Communicator works
OK for me. Who knows?

Cheers,

Victor

ps: The new Communicator is available from ftp://ftp.netscape.com/...

You really don't need it now. I just used the 'ns-install' script that
came with the Communicator archive. Oh and another point I found which
wasn't obvious is, to get SSL connections (i.e. to hhtps: URL's) working,
I had to copy the 'moz40p3' file that is installed into Netscape's root
directory to my $HOME/.netscape directory. But, after all that, it seems
to work pretty well.

Hello

after some people telling that the new version of netscape (version 4.01
beta 5) has quite a stable status, I took the time for a download of 9MB.

But I can't follow these statements. Netscape crashes every minute twice
with a bus error. The configuration I have is a debian 1.2.xx system
with:

Winona:~:1 ldd /usr/local/netscape/netscape

I tried the old workaround of the libXpm problem that I still had to use
with 4.0b5, but with rather the same results. Starting netscape and the
first click on lower right icon for opening a mail box makes a new window
appear with an immediately crash afterwards.

So what special versions of libs are you using??
