IMO, that is a nice way to torture yourself. Thanks for the heads up. What is the best way to manage upgrades on a Sid desktop? Doh. Seems apt-get upgrade is the best way, no? From wikipedia: *Update*, upgrade and dist-upgrade * **Update** is used to resynchronize the *package index* files from their sources. The indices of available packages are fetched from the location(s) specified in /etc/apt/sources.list. For example, when using a *Debian* archive, this command retrieves and scans the Packages.gz files, so that information about new and updated packages is available. An *update* should always be performed before an upgrade or dist-upgrade. Be aware that the overall progress meter will not always be correct as the size of the package files cannot be known in advance. * *Upgrade* is used to install the *newest versions of all packages* currently installed on the system from the sources enumerated in /etc/apt/sources.list. Packages currently installed with new versions available are retrieved and upgraded; *under no circumstances are currently installed packages removed*, or packages not already installed retrieved and installed (compare to *dist-upgrade* option). New versions of currently installed packages that cannot be upgraded without changing the install status of another package will be left at their current version. An *update* must be performed first so that *apt-get* knows that new versions of packages are available. * *dist-upgrade*, in addition to performing the function of upgrade, also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions of packages; *apt-get* has a smart conflict resolution system, and it will attempt to upgrade the most important packages at the expense of less important ones if necessary. The /etc/apt/sources.list file contains a list of locations from which to retrieve desired package files. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Which, if you're confused by the one-liner, means: 1) Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file and any files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ to replace etch with sid and stable with unstable. This will change the package manager's idea of where to get packages, and what versions are supposed to be current. 2) Run aptitude update to have aptitude download the new list of current software packages. 3) Run aptitude install aptitude apt dpkg to install new versions of the package management system. 4) Run aptitude full-upgrade to kick off a system-wide distribution upgrade. You probably don't want to do this without some preparation and backup, as things can wind up broken during a dist-upgrade no matter how careful you are. Several people (myself included) have had problems with perl or with locales not upgrading perfectly, leaving the system in a hampered state. If you're going to do a distribution upgrade, you want to make sure you'll have time to fix any such problems that arise, and resources to help you do so (like a startup disk in case the box doesn't come up, or a second computer for googling in case you manage to disable your internet access.) Don't do this right before bedtime the day before your important presentation in the morning, or when you have a major project due the next day, etc. Good luck! ~Jeff On Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 11:20 AM, Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. bs...@volumehost.net wrote: On Monday 2008 December 15 07:40:58 Dan-Simon Myrland wrote: Hi! how do i change my distrubution from Etch to Sid (unstable) ?

I am currently running Testing with a few packages from Sid. I just moved to Debian a few weeks ago. I am running Debian as a home server which handles a website, e-mail server, samba server, a few other small server applications. I am really the only user except for e-mail, I have about 4 users total on the system. More than anything running Linux is a complete learning experience for me. I have noticed that it takes at least 10 days, if not more, to get updated packages from unstable to testing. How dangerous would it be for me to move completely to unstable? Has anybody completely trashed their system by running unstable? I like to live on the cutting edge, but I also don't want my machine to completely die where it won't boot up anymore. I've run unstable on at least one of my machines for 8 years. My experience is that it works fine almost all the time. Oh, and one or two times a year some little thing goes wrong. PAM gets upgraded and decides no password you enter is valid. The kernel loses track of your hard drives. An upgrade to the bootloader hoses your initrd. A common library changes SONAME without changing its package name, breaking everything that depends on it. The X server is upgraded and wrecks your display configuration. A libc upgrade breaks everything in sight (or better yet, only breaks a few things in subtle ways it takes you weeks to even notice, generating corrupt data the whole time). A change in the network subsystem means your Internet connection mysteriously fails to work. etc, etc, etc. With the exception of the subtle libc corruption, all of these have happened to me at one time or another. If you can't tolerate and recover from one of these events, I would not recommend running unstable. Daniel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: Sid/Unstable
Jeff Grossman: [...] How dangerous would it be for me to move completely to unstable? I do not think it would be particularly dangerous. Security updates generally reach sid quite fast (but, of course, without guarantee). But with about seven years of Debian experience, I still refrain from running unstable on machines offering services on the internet. By the way, currently there is a problem with the machines building new packages for sid. That means sid users are getting no updates whatsoever. No security updates, no new upstream releases, no bug fixes. Stable users on the other hand do get security support. Has anybody completely trashed their system by running unstable? The risk of a faulty upgrade that seriously breaks your system is quite low. I am running sid on my main desktop for probably five years already and it never happened to me. But there sometimes is serious collateral damage. IIRC, once there was a script for package configuration that (accidentally) did something like 'rm -rf /'. I wasn't hit by this, but that was pure luck. You have to be prepared to be a beta tester all the time. Another aspect that you should consider is that it takes quite some effort to keep a sid system up to date. Every time you upgrade, you might install some version of a package that demands a new configuration file syntax, introduces new bugs or isn't compatible with another package you rely on. If availability of your services is in any way important to one of your users, I don't think sid is appropriate. Another experience of mine is that it is a really bad idea to have inexperienced or more or less computer-illiterate people using a sid system directly (as a desktop user). For these people it is quite confusing when their desktop environment or office application receives an upgrade which changes its appearance. I do not think that sid usage is generally a bad idea, even for inexperienced users. But you should not use sid on a system you or other people rely on and you should be prepared to learn about how Debian works and how to act when it doesn't. Re: Sid/Unstable
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Jeff, I've been running Sid on my desktop machines since..., well, 2000 I guess. I've not gotten into a cannot boot situation, but there have been two times that X wouldn't start. The Xorg transition was Interesting Times indeed. Sid's USB has recently stopped recognizing my camera, too. I had to go use a system I built in September for my Mom in order to get the pictures (because I'd rather do that than run Windows!). Unstable is _unstable_, be ready to be surprised. I'll echo Vikki's comment that any production server I run runs stable. I do have a server right now that I use for video transcoding that runs Sid too, but no one else uses it. I don't consider it production. I wouldn't run testing at all. Testing was the first one I tried, thinking that it sounded good, but there is no imperative to fix problems in testing. With Sid, if I see something that doesn't look right, I just don't upgrade for a few days to let it settle down (if it ever does settle down). Each time a Stable is released, Testing goes into complete chaos. Not something I ever want to experience again. That 2000-2007 stretch has not been without rebuilds, either, and two different primary laptops. There are going to be times, maybe years apart, when things get completely confused. Sid may be upgraded more often, but it also builds up cruft faster. A learning experience it has been, no doubt about that! I'd say run unstable on something both interactive and _yours_. Stable on any system that has to work today and tomorrow. Thanks in advance for your comments. You really have to understand how debian works and be able to fix things when they break (or wait with a broken system untill things get fixed), perhaps reverting to earlier versions, etc, when you run Sid. If you've only been running Debian for a few weeks and running Linux is a complete learning experience for me, then it may not be safe. Also, it depends on how secure you want your home server to be. Remember that Sid really is unstable and there are probably security holes in it. When a package in Sid has not been changed for (I think) 10 days, then it automatically moves to Testing (Lenny right now). The reason something isn't percolating down to Lenny is that bugs keep getting found and fixed (and perhaps more created). Answer these questions in order: Why is Stable (Etch) not appropriate for what you are doing? Why is Testing (Lenny) not appropriate for what you are doing? Can you tolerate the instability and vulnerabilities in Unstable (Sid)? Doug. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Congrats and welcome! I am running Debian as a home server which handles a website, e-mail server, samba server, a few other small server applications. publicly available server? if so, sid may not be such a great idea. But it really depends on what you're doing. If you're only serving up static html, getting mail with fetchmail or somesuch (i.e. not listening for mail), then you're probably okay. If you're serving up dynamic stuff with server-side scripting and logins and so forth, or accepting mail directly, then its probably not a good idea. Use a good firewall. I am really the only user except for e-mail, I have about 4 users total on the system. How tolerant is your family of losing service from this server? I have a nice little home server with all our music, photos, video, mail, personal web pages etc on it. Its a pretty sweet little setup, lots of fun, but if my wife can't get to the music, I'm screwed (or not, as the case may be). So that thing runs stable with long uptimes. Its really nice have serious high availability at home :) More than anything running Linux is a complete learning experience for me. sid is great for this. maybe look at running your personal desktop on it's a lot of fun and you learn quickly. I have noticed that it takes at least 10 days, if not more, to get updated packages from unstable to testing. this is debian policy and is how it works. IMO, and I've said it many times before, testing is not a good choice for newbies or people who desire reasonable availability. Much better to stick with stable or move to sid. Sid gets fixed pretty quickly, in general, unlike testing which can stay broken for quite a while. How dangerous would it be for me to move completely to unstable? depends on how you define danger and what you do to mitigate risk. backup backup backup and be sure to remember to take good backups. Has anybody completely trashed their system by running unstable? I'm sure many people have trashed their systems *while* running sid, but how much of that is sid's fault is debatable. I like to live on the cutting edge, but I also don't want my machine to completely die where it won't boot up anymore. this depends on how you define boot up. If by boot up you mean, pushing the power button and getting all the way through a successful login with out interaction (other than the login itself), then sid is maybe not for you. It works this way to at least one 9 and probably something like three 9's, but stuff does break. Now, if by boot up you mean I can scrape together a way to get the system back up and running somehow then yes sid is for you. You need to be prepared to find your way around a busybox shell, to boot with a live-cd of some kind to chroot into the system, to restore part or all of the system from backups (really rare, IMO), revert/downgrade package changes, etc etc etc. It's really rare for this stuff to happen, but it does happen. Learning how to deal with it is fun and rewarding (for me anyway) and getting a system to boot when all it want to do is sit there and blink at you is very gratifying. If that applies to you, then maybe sid would be appropriate. I occurs to me that we should build an FAQ or wiki entry somewhere addressing this.
Sur ma Sid, j'obtiens : sid:/etc/init.d# update-rc.d -n -f portmap remove Removing any system startup links for /etc/init.d/portmap ... /etc/rc0.d/S32portmap /etc/rc1.d/K81portmap /etc/rc2.d/S18portmap /etc/rc3.d/S18portmap /etc/rc4.d/S18portmap /etc/rc5.d/S18portmap /etc/rc6.d/S32portmap /etc/rcS.d/S43portmap sid:/etc/init.d# update-rc.d -n -f nfs-common remove Removing any system startup links for /etc/init.d/nfs-common ... /etc/rc0.d/K20nfs-common /etc/rc1.d/K20nfs-common /etc/rc2.d/S20nfs-common /etc/rc3.d/S20nfs-common /etc/rc4.d/S20nfs-common /etc/rc5.d/S20nfs-common /etc/rc6.d/K20nfs-common /etc/rcS.d/S44nfs-common Ce qui implique que les scripts /etc/init.d/nfs-common et /etc/portmap sont lancés deux fois au démarrage (liens symboliques avec /etc/rcS.d). Cela confirme bien les logs que j'ai : Starting portmap daemon Starting NFS common utilities: statd. ... Starting portmap daemon...Already running.. ... Starting NFS common utilities: statd. -- Franck Joncourt http://www.debian.org - http://smhteam.info/wiki/ GPG server : pgpkeys.mit.edu Fingerprint : C10E D1D0 EF70 0A2A CACF 9A3C C490 534E 75C0 89FE signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Donc tant que tu as apt, tu pourras réinstaller aptitude si tu veux : apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, apt-get install aptitude.

-- Sylvain Sauvage
