I'm assuming it was deliberate also, to address the 2038 bug. I've seen
much talk of it back in 2000 in Google, but nothing more recent.

It was deliberate. The postgresql guys noticed when some release redhat
shipped with these modifications. They tried to convince the glibc guys to
revert but they refused.

Basically, POSIX doesn't define mktime() before 1970, so glibc doesn't
support it. Or so the argument goes.

IIRC, postgresql has now copied the mktime code from FreeBSDs libc to deal
with the problem. Or maybe they're just thinking about it.

dpkg --root=/mnt -i *.deb

 Bin fuer jeden Vorschlag offen.

an ihren Ort kopieren.

apt-get requests glibc-2.2.5-x; won't install it

2003-01-14 Thread kynn

When I try to install locales using apt-get I get:

  # apt-get install locales
  Reading Package Lists... Done
  Building Dependency Tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
  that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
locales: Depends: glibc-2.2.5-14.3
  E: Sorry, broken packages

...but if I try to install glibc-2.2.5, I get:

Note, selecting libc6 instead of glibc-2.2.5-6

Note, selecting libc6 instead of glibc-2.2.5-14.3
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 333 not upgraded.

Therefore, apt-get is inconsistent when it comes to using libc6 as a
substitute for glibc-2.2.5-x.

(I am using the 2.4.18-686 kernel. The distribution is Woody.)

How can I get around this?

Many thanks!

rebuild gcc, glibc for woody

Hello list,

Is it possible to rebuild the gcc and glibc in woody with some optimized gcc
argument? I've noticed that gentoo has a /etc/make.conf in which I can defile

CHOST=i686-pc-linux-gnu
CFLAGS=-march=i686 -O3 -pipe

is it possible for debian woody to do so to rebuild the gcc and glibc with
optimized compilation method? If yes, which is the best recommended way to
achieve this?

Add some deb-src lines to your sources.list, then run export
CFLAGS='-march=i686 -O3 -pipe', then apt-get --compile source gcc
glibc. Untested, but it should work. :)

Re: Nergradera glibc i debian

2002-11-01 Thread Karolina Lindqvist

/etc/apt/preferences:

Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 600

Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 400

Package: libc6*
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 1005

apt-get install libc6=2.2.5-14.3

Yes, this is the right place to post questions about any Debian setup.

I recently updated my testing/unstable Debian, and had to recognize,
that java 1.3.1 from Sun did not run any more:

 gellert@ritch:~$ javac
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Unable to load native library: /usr/local/java/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so:
symbol __libc_wait, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with
 link time reference

Woah. Downgrading to older glibc would have been to difficult because of
the dependencies, and yes, I do need version 1.3 of Java to use PSE Pro.

I had the same problem with jdk 1.4. I find that upgrading to 1.4.1 fixes
it.

The problem here is that some idiot at Sun put a call to __libc_wait in
the JVM. __libc_wait is (was) an internal function of libc 2.2 that
should never have been called directly from outside libc, and it no
longer exists in libc 2.3.

I don't know what PSE Pro is; does it really work only on 1.3? You can't
use 1.4.1? What I've done for a few things is use 1.4.1 with the
j2ee.jar from 1.3 (since AFAIK there is still no jdk1.4-ee). I haven't
found this to cause any problems.

[perror() ändert errno]

| [man errno:]
| Its value is significant only when the call
| returned an error (usually -1), and a library function that does succeed is
| allowed to change errno.

| [man perror:]
| Note that
| errno is undefined after a successful library call: this call may well change
| this variable, even though it succeeds [...]

Also lass' gut sein.

glibc using the GS segment register

2002-09-30 Thread Richard Jones

I need a version of glibc that uses the GS segment register to access
pthread-local storage*. I've neither been able to find one for debian nor is it
obvious to me from looking through the sources how to compile it to use %gs.
Any suggestions welcomed.

I currently have kernel 2.4.18, libc6 version 2.2.5-14.3 on ia32 (pentium 3).

TIA
Richard

* Why? Because the Jikes RVM requires this (and a 2.4 kernel).

man perror:
   Note
that errno is undefined after a successful library call:
this call may well change this variable, even though it
succeeds, for example because it internally used some
other library function that failed. Thus, if a failing
call is not immediately followed by a call to perror, the
value of errno should be saved.

undefinierten errno. Das folgende perror(B) ist somit sinnfrei.
Also errno speichern wie die man-page sagt.

GLibc 2.2 on Alpha

2002-09-18 Thread Paul Bakker

I think this is a mistake on my side, but here it
goes:

I have an alpha processor and distribution
installed of debian 2.1.

Now I need to install pptp-linux, but this
requires:
libc6(=
2.2.4-4)

Now the problem is:
Normally when i need to install a package for alpha
I just search for the package on:
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

and replace the i386 in the filename with
alpha.
Only this is the first time there does not exist
and alpha version of:
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/glibc/libc6_2.2.5-6_i386.deb

So now my question is:
Does there exist an alpha version of libc 2.2.5 ?
Or is there another way, or am I just missing something (Probably the latter!
hehe)

Thanks in advance,
Paul

D'après apt-cache show, non.
(cf l'erreur que tu obtiens), apt-get dist-upgrade veut te l'enlever.

How did you upgrade? It sounds like you've forced dependencies or
similar.

If you're trying to install XFree86 4.1 on potato, try this:

... or just upgrade to woody since it's pretty close to stable.

apt-get source 'package' once you add source lines to your
/etc/apt/sources.list and run apt-get update:

deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free

for unstable as an example.

the glibc package is one of the more complex packages we keep. There is a
patches directory in the source as I recall so you should just need to add the
patch to the dir and then register it with the package's makefiles.

the applications
that i want to install require at least glibc 2.2.X.
Is there some safe way to to just upgrade glibc?
I would prefer to not have to upgrade this machine

any alternatives?

Any help is much appreciated

Upgrading to woody *is* the safest way. Attempting to upgrade only the
libc6 package will probably destabilize your system. Building glibc from
source will almost certainly introduce some very subtle problems unless
you're very familiar with what's going on.

 Are there any alternatives?

If you don't want to upgrade to woody, you could build the applications
in question from source.

potato+glibc-2.2.5

2002-02-23 Thread Carlos Echavarria
Buenas...

millennium:/home/barto/temp/paquetes# apt-get install enlightenment
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libc6-dev: Depends: libc6 (= 2.1.3-18) but 2.2.5-3 is to be installed
  libc6-pic: Depends: libc6 (= 2.1.3-18) but 2.2.5-3 is to be installed
  libgtk1.2: Depends: gconv-modules
locales: Depends: libc6 (= 2.1.3-18) but 2.2.5-3 is to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify
a solution).

dice:

millennium:/home/barto/temp/paquetes# dpkg -i libc6-dev_2.2.5-3_i386.deb
dpkg: considering removing libstdc++2.10-dev in favour of libc6-dev ...
dpkg: no, cannot remove libstdc++2.10-dev (--auto-deconfigure will help):
 g++ depends on libstdc++2.10-dev (= 1:2.95.2-10)
  libstdc++2.10-dev is to be removed.
dpkg: regarding libc6-dev_2.2.5-3_i386.deb containing libc6-dev:
 libc6-dev conflicts with libstdc++2.10-dev ( 1:2.95.2-15)
  libstdc++2.10-dev (version 1:2.95.2-13) is installed.
dpkg: error processing libc6-dev_2.2.5-3_i386.deb (--install):
conflicting packages - not installing libc6-dev
Errors were encountered while processing:
 libc6-dev_2.2.5-3_i386.deb

Saludos.

Large files XFS glibc-2.1.3

2002-02-21 Thread Petr Linke
Hi,
I open again the problem, which was here discussed.

Description of problem:
System Debian 2.2, glibc 2.1.3,
kernel 2.4.17 patched for XFS (journaling 64bit filesystem from SGI)

On XFS I can make large files ( 2GB ), but I have problem with
manipulating with these large files. I cannot delete them, nor copy, nor
list ... - I receive message Value too large for defined data type.
The problem is I thing in glibc-2.1.3, which is distributed with Debian2.2.
I recompile the glibc from sources with defined values:
_LARGEFILE_SOURCE
_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64
which is necessary for supporting large files, but after installing this
new recompiled glibc I have the same problems, which I reported ...

Maybe I make some stupid mistake, but I looked into /usr/include/features.h,
and defining _LARGEFILE_SOURCE, and _FILE_OFFSET_BIT=64 and recompiling
glibc should be sufficient.

Has anybody any idea? Answer please cc to me.

Thank you, Petr Linke

That is because all the tools have to be recompiled as well. Your
best bet is to upgrade to 'woody' (the codename for the next

libc6 2.1.3 is in Debian Stable.

Wouldn't downgrading libc6 to 2.1.3 on a woody/sid box break your system?
This happened to me
(see my previous thread libc6 downgraded; system won't boot on p. 8 of the
August debian-users archive). In that case, someone installed libc6 2.1.3
over libc6 2.2.3, and immediately the system became unusable (everything
complained about libc.so.6 not being found), and subsequently could not even
boot.

Thanks to John Patton for his earlier suggestions to fix that problem, by
the way. I ended up completely reinstalling due to a stupid mistake on my
part, so never got as far as trying his fix.

You might need libc6-dev too for headers and such.

Are there different versions of libc available? What if you are using

I know you can do both libc5 and libc6 (glibc2.x), but can you do

You're thinking of glibc2.0 to glibc2.1, and even then it only broke
some programs that used undocumented interfaces to the library. glibc2.1
to glibc2.2 is perfectly fine; there are lots of packages in Debian that
haven't needed new uploads since glibc2.2 arrived and that still work,
and I've just spent the last day and a half testing proprietary code at
work that was compiled for glibc2.1 and running on glibc2.2 without any

potato and glibc-2.2.3 distrib

2001-08-08 Thread Nic Ferrier
I'm trying to setup a machine for development and I just can't get
glibc-2.2.3 to build on potato.

background
In the past I've used debian-unstable for doing development, the
trouble is I find that, well, too unstable.

I considered using debian-testing but the stuff I'm working on
(network implementation layer for GCJ) generally means I have to look
at source code anyway so it's easier if I just build from source.

Or that's what I thought.
background

Here's what I've done:

- installed a completly fresh potato (development task)
- updated autoconf, automake, libtool and binutils to the latest
versions (via distrib downloads)
- downloaded the glibc-2.2.3 distrib
- downloaded the linuxthreads distrib and set it up correctly
- downloaded and built the linux kernel 2.2.19 (but not installed)
- configured the glibc with:
--with-headers=location-of-linux-headers
--enable-add-ons
- built glibc
- run glibc's make check

Unfortunately make check fails saying:
can't work out user name for id

I can fix that by changing the NSS config slightly but that breaks
debian and anyway, make check simply fails a bit further on
compaining about some posix issue.

I presume that I'm missing a library so I added testing (where
glibc-2.2.3 is available) to my sources.list and did this:
  apt-get -s install glibc-2.2.3

This reported no new packages (it did report new packages but I have
them all, I presume that there are some versioning issues).

Here's a list of some of the relevant installed packages:

g++2.95.2-13
gcc2.95.2-13
libc6 2.1.3-18
libc6-dev 2.1.3-18

libltdl0 1.3.3-9.1
libltdl0-dev 1.3.3-9.1
libncurses44.2-9
libncurses55.0-6.0potato1
libncurses5-de 5.0-6.0potato1
libnet-telnet- 3.01-2
libstdc++2.10  2.95.2-13
libstdc++2.10- 2.95.2-13

Please, please, please help. I just don't know what to do next.

CUPS is asking for glibc - how do I get it?

CUPS installs okay, but when I try to start it I get the message

when I look at /lib I find that libc.so.6 - libc-2.1.3.so

What do I need to change?

Hi Randy,

I've got the same problem when trying to install the 2.4.* deb-file
for cups 1.1.9. They've linked the executables against the new version
2.2 of glibc. I like to run a stable system, that's the reason why I
still stay with potato. So for me it was no choice to upgrade such a
vital library like the glibc to a version from woody or sid.

The only way to come around this problem is to get the source tarball
from www.cups.org and compile it by yourself. It's as easy as going
through the steps tar xvzf cups-1.1.9-1-source.tar.gz; cd cups-1.1.9;
./configure; make; su; make install.
But have a look into the INSTALL.txt file in the source directory for
additional information. For me it worked without problems.

Bye
Andreas

glibc = libc6

The easiest way to upgrade to woody is with 'apt-get dist-upgrade'.

Do you mean that programs complain about this after you upgraded or
while you are upgrading?

Also note that the most durable way is to use dselect.

potato is based on glibc-2.1 -- woody is based on glibc-2.2
So although a libc6 package is installed it may be the case that it
is not the one from woody. As already suggested do a dist-upgrade,
that's the easiest way to upgrade your glibc-2.1 to glibc-2.2

I just ran update myself. It looks like locales is busted:

  Depends: glibc_2.2.3-7

Last version had:

  Depends: glibc2.2

Package libc6 Provides: glibc2.2, so it looks like a minor error by the
libc maintainer, and another one to upload it untested to unstable.

Just don't try to upgrade your unstable boxes today.

Problems with glibc and name service switch in potato?

2001-06-07 Thread Viktor Rosenfeld
Hello folks,

I am struggling with getting nisplus to work on Debian. I installed the
(unofficial) nisplus packages from http://www.realbodo.de/ and set
everything up correctly. I've already set up nisplus successfully on
RedHat, so at least I know what I'm doing and that I can get it right.

Here's the problem though:

When I set up /etc/nsswitch.conf as following:

passwd: compat
group: compat
passwd_compat: nisplus
group_compat: nisplus

programs like login and ssh will segfault. This happens _after_ the
login is successful as shown by this output of ssh:

---snip---
01:19 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ # ssh homer
[EMAIL PROTECTED]'s password:
Last login: Thu Jun 7 01:15:37 2001 from bart on pts/2
Linux homer 2.2.17 #1 Mon Feb 12 01:28:45 CET 2001 i486 unknown

Have a lot of fun.

Could not set [EMAIL PROTECTED]'s secret key,
maybe the keyserver is down?
Received disconnect: Command terminated on signal 11.
---snip---

(BTW, the keyserver is not down, dunno what this is all about. It
doesn't happen on another machine though, maybe this has something to do
this machine acting as a masq router over ISDN. Doesn't have anything
to do with the problem at hand, though.)

login also segfaults on me.

Everything else e.g. the pam module (libpam_unix2.so) is working.

This is a up-to-date potato system (well, too actually).

Any idea what might be going on?

TIA,
Viktor
