Hylafax probs
I've just installed Hylafax under potato. When I've launched faxsetup the program has complained about the absence of the courier definition under /usr/share/enscript/afm, while there are many afm files under that directory. I've tried to add the line FontDir: /usr/share/enscript/afm and now faxsetup is complaining that the program etc/hylafax/vgetty-link is missing, which is true! How can I fix the problems and where can I find that vgetty-link file? Ciao Vittorio
Hylafax fax user
After having read all the documentation and a detailed, long article in a linux magazine, I've installed hylafax server client under potato. If I launch faxsetup it simply tells, among other non-essential things, that not an fuser (fax user ???) is defined and exits regularly. Using sendfax -d -n # file I'm presented with a password: which I haven't been able to set up. So the first problem is there! How can I set up an hylafax user password? No idea if it's really needed by faxsetup, or why. Using sendfax -d -n # file I'm presented with a password: which I haven't been able to set up. So the first problem is there! How can I set up an hylafax user password? That doesn't sound right at all. I don't remember having to do such a thing. Try http://www.hylafax.org. There's a mailing list as well, which is quite helpful: http://www.hylafax.org/mailing-lists.html Hope that helps a little. Hylafax is not completely trivial to set up, but it shouldn't be *too* bad.

You should go to www.hylafax.org for more information. There's also a Hylafax mailing list that's useful. Windows clients? WHFC is the most commonly used one: makes hylafax look like a Windows printer, among other things. Check out 'respond' as well, which takes a completely different approach. And I know there are Java client(s) in the works. It's all linked to from the web page.

Saludos.

hylafax passwd?
Hi I installed hylafax on my slink 2.1r4 machine the other day. After running the setup scripts faxsetup(i think it was called so) and faxaddmodem the daemons faxq and hfaxd can be started and are so at boottime. I also included my user in the fax group (it was already earlier in the dialout group). The problem is that when I try to check the status I'm asked for a password, and dito when I try to send a fax with sendfax. If I try my own password it is a failed login altough I checked with the flag for verbose it is my user trying to log into the hfaxd. Hints? Anders

hylafax not compatible with new libtiff3g
libtiff3g version 3.5.2.4 in potato does not seem to be compatible with hylafax-server. I get the following errors: Starting HylaFAX daemons: faxq/usr/sbin/faxq: Symbol IFFFaxBlackTable' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking /usr/sbin/faxq: Symbol IFFFaxMainTable' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking /usr/sbin/faxq: Symbol IFFFaxWhiteTable' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking hfaxd. Thinking that maybe hylafax had been compiled with a different, incompatible version, I downloaded the hylafax 4.02 debian source and tried to build my own package. This gave the following message: Checking TIFF support. Incompatible/missing TIFF Library. HylaFAX v4.0pl2 requires a recent TIFF software distribution; one distributed March 7, 1996 or later. If you do not have up to date TIFF software on your system then you can retrieve it from the location where you obtained this software. Otherwise, if you have the right software, verify that you have the TIFFINC and LIBTIFF configuration parameters set correctly for your system (see above) and that any environment variables are setup that are needed to locate a libtiff DSO at runtime (e.g. LD_LIBRARY_PATH). Also be sure that any relative pathnames are made relative to the top of the build area. Unrecoverable error! Once you've corrected the problem rerun this script. /bin/sh: line 2: 9038 Broken pipe yes 9039 Done(1) | CXX=c++ ./configure make: *** [debian/build-stamp] Error 1 This error message implies that a newer version of TIFF is required, however the latest version at ftp://ftp.sgi.com/graphics/tiff/ is tiff-v3.4beta037, while the current version of libtiff3g is 3.5.2.4. Is version 3.5.2.4 incompatible with hylafax? If it doesn't come from SGI, what is the source? I tried building the tiff packages from unstable/main/source, but there were errors which didn't make any sense to me (something about trying to build with libc5 - ) Has anyone been able to successfully use the current version of hylafax-server? I installed Hylafax on Potato but I got this error: === The file: /etc/hylafax/vgetty-link does not exist or this file is not an executable program. The HylaFAX software optionally uses this program and the fact that it does not exist on the system is not a fatal error. If the program resides in a different location and you do not want to install a symbolic link for /etc/hylafax/vgetty-link that points to your program then you must reconfigure and rebuild HylaFAX from source code. Re: Hylafax problems
Hmmm, my system doesn't have either faxrunq or faxspool and hylafax works just fine. There is a faxq which must be running and this is started at boot time by /etc/init.d/hylafax, which is symlinked to /etc/rc*.d/S20hylafax. This also starts hfaxd. You will need to configure things by running faxsetup and faxaddmodem--follow the prompts. Hylafax keeps pretty good (although long) log files in /var/log/hylafax. You should probably look at them and it may give some hints. What does faxstat report? Hylafax question
Can one receive a fax manually using hylafax? Say for instance I receive a voice call with a request for my fax facilities, can I activiate hylafax to give a fax tone and receive the fax coming in? You mentioned that one of your hylafax packages conflicts with mgetty - are you working on fixing that? mgetty is THE getty to use - i wouldn't consider using anything else (unless i needed a hacked getty to do something special...hacking agetty is a lot easier than hacking mgetty because it's much smaller) hylafax sounds like it's THE fax program to use. I'd really like to be able to use it, but not if the price was losing mgetty. surely there's some way of making them work together... probably the simplest (but not necessarily the best) solution would be for there to be two mgetty packages - one with sendfax which conflicts with hylafax, and one without which suggests hylafax...would have to be co-ordinated with the mgetty maintainer Christoph Lameter [EMAIL PROTECTED] another similar option would be to split mgetty into two packages, 'mgetty' and 'sendfax'. mgetty could Suggest: sendfax | hylafax yet another option would be to use the 'update-alternatives' script to resolve the conflict...i think you said that it was only one program called sendfax which conflicted. which brings up the quick hack option - rename hylafax's 'sendfax' to 'sendhylafax' or something and make sure the rest of the hylafax suite knows about the change (including the man pages!) Re: Hylafax packages?
It would probably be good to split mgetty into mgetty mgetty-fax mgetty-voice mgetty-doc That does not solve the problem with accepting incoming faxes though. Although hylaxfax does have something to offer in this regard. I have no idea how to integrate that. I have no experience with multi-binary packages. If someone else wants to do it then tell me. Otherwise I have to make debmake multi-binary aware. On Tue, 5 Nov 1996, Craig Sanders wrote: cas That was myself. Can you send me a summary of your experiences so I can improve my package? Sure, I like debmake :-) For hylafax I need to create 2 packages, hylafax-server and hylafax-client. In your example rules file I've changed the line make install PREFIX=debian/tmp to make install SERVERPREFIX=debian/server CLIENTPREFIX=debian/client and edited the Makefile(s) appropriately. Then later I do dpkg-gencontrol -phylafax-server -Pdebian/server and the same method for the client package. No big problems (the control file has separate sections for hylafax-server and hylafax-client). Re: Hylafax packages?
Ok. I will put the fax related files in a separate package mgetty-fax (and the voice part in mgetty-voice). Thus hylafax should conflict with mgetty-fax . Hylafax packages?
Somebody a few weeks ago had mentioned that they were preparing hylafax as packages? Have they been uploaded? I seem to be having a problem getting sessiontracing working with the source.
