Hylafax probs

2001-05-14 Thread Victor
I've just installed Hylafax under potato. When I've launched faxsetup the
program has complained about the absence of the courier definition under
/usr/share/enscript/afm, while there are many afm files under that directory.
I've tried to add the line FontDir: /usr/share/enscript/afm and now
faxsetup is complaining that the program etc/hylafax/vgetty-link is missing,
which is true!
How can I fix the problems and where can I find that vgetty-link file?
Ciao
Vittorio

Hylafax fax user

2001-03-27 Thread

After having read all the documentation and a detailed, long article in a linux
magazine, I've installed hylafax server client under potato.
If I launch faxsetup it simply tells, among other non-essential things,that not
an fuser (fax user ???) is defined and exits regularly.
Using sendfax -d -n # file I'm presented with a password: which I haven't
been able to set up.
So the first problem is there! How can I set up an hylafax user password?

fuser's a program that identifies which process is using a file. No
idea if it's really needed by faxsetup, or why.

That doesn't sound right at all. I don't remember having to do such a
thing.

Try http://www.hylafax.org. There's a mailing list as well, which is
quite helpful:

http://www.hylafax.org/mailing-lists.html

Hope that helps a little. Hylafax is not completely trivial to set up,
but it shouldn't be *too* bad.

You should go to www.hylafax.org for more information.

There's also a Hylafax mailing list that's useful.

Windows clients?

WHFC is the most commonly used one: makes hylafax look like a Windows
printer, among other things.

Check out 'respond' as well, which takes a completely different
approach.

And I know there are Java client(s) in the works.

It's all linked to from the web page.

recibir, no descuelga y cosas asi.

2000-09-05 Thread Angel Vicente Perez

He

SENDFROM=hylafax

HylaFax y Sendmail

2000-05-12 Thread Angel Vicente Perez

Saludos agardecidos

hylafax passwd?

2000-01-26 Thread Anders Lennartsson
Hi

I installed hylafax on my slink 2.1r4 machine the other day. After
running the setup scripts faxsetup(i think it was called so) and
faxaddmodem the daemons faxq and hfaxd can be started and are so at
boottime.
I also included my user in the fax group (it was already earlier in the
dialout group).

The problem is that when I try to check the status I'm asked for a
password, and dito when I try to send a fax with sendfax.
If I try my own password it is a failed login altough I checked with the
flag for verbose it is my user trying to log into the hfaxd.

Hints?

hylafax ...

1999-12-30 Thread Andreas Kessen
Hi Bob,

I just read your complain about the libtiff-problem in hylafax-server.
I've got the same problem and no solution to it.

I've been using an very old build on my system which worked fine but after
upgrading to the recent potatoe the system hangs. :-( ...

I wonder if the problem is just a tiff problem, because the inter
process-commulincation and the logging looks strange too:

- I'm not able to log the modem communication on an incoming fax-connection
even with all flags on ServerTracing and SessionTracing enabled. The Log on
Fax-Modem-initialsation looks fine (a lot of ATxxx's and OK's) but once

Did you find out anything ?

hylafax not compatible with new libtiff3g

1999-11-17 Thread Bob Nielsen
libtiff3g version 3.5.2.4 in potato does not seem to be compatible with
hylafax-server. I get the following errors:

Starting HylaFAX daemons: faxq/usr/sbin/faxq: Symbol IFFFaxBlackTable'
has different size in shared object, consider re-linking
/usr/sbin/faxq: Symbol IFFFaxMainTable' has different size in shared
object, consider re-linking
/usr/sbin/faxq: Symbol IFFFaxWhiteTable' has different size in shared
object, consider re-linking hfaxd.

Thinking that maybe hylafax had been compiled with a different,
incompatible version, I downloaded the hylafax 4.02 debian source and
tried to build my own package. This gave the following message:

Checking TIFF support.

Incompatible/missing TIFF Library.

Compilation or execution of the following test program failed:

--
#include tiffio.h
main()
{
if (TIFFLIB_VERSION  19960307) { /* check include file version
*/
printf(old include files: version %u\n, TIFFLIB_VERSION);
exit(-1);
}
if (strncmp(TIFFGetVersion(), LIBTIFF, Version 3.4, 20) != 0) {
printf(old library: version %s\n, TIFFGetVersion());
exit(-1);
} else
exit(0);
}
--

With:

TIFFINC=/usr/include
LIBTIFF=-ltiff

The above program checks the version of the TIFF library to ensure it
is suitable for use with HylaFAX. HylaFAX v4.0pl2 requires a recent
TIFF software distribution; one distributed March 7, 1996 or later. If
you do not have up to date TIFF software on your system then you can
retrieve it from the location where you obtained this software.
Otherwise, if you have the right software, verify that you have the
TIFFINC and LIBTIFF configuration parameters set correctly for your
system (see above) and that any environment variables are setup that
are needed to locate a libtiff DSO at runtime (e.g. LD_LIBRARY_PATH).
Also be sure that any relative pathnames are made relative to the top
of the build area.

Unrecoverable error! Once you've corrected the problem rerun this
script.
/bin/sh: line 2:  9038 Broken pipe yes
  9039 Done(1) | CXX=c++ ./configure
make: *** [debian/build-stamp] Error 1

This error message implies that a newer version of TIFF is required,
however the latest version at ftp://ftp.sgi.com/graphics/tiff/ is
tiff-v3.4beta037, while the current version of libtiff3g is 3.5.2.4.
Is version 3.5.2.4 incompatible with hylafax? If it doesn't come from
SGI, what is the source?

I tried building the tiff packages from unstable/main/source, but there
were errors which didn't make any sense to me (something about trying
to build with libc5 - )

Has anyone been able to successfully use the current version of
hylafax-server?

I installed Hylafax on Potato but I got this error:

HylaFAX software optionally uses this program and the fact that
it does not exist on the system is not a fatal error. If the
program resides in a different location and you do not want to
install a symbolic link for /etc/hylafax/vgetty-link that points to your
program
then you must reconfigure and rebuild HylaFAX from source code.

Modem support functions written to /var/spool/fax/etc/setup.modem.
Configuration parameters written to /var/spool/fax/etc/setup.cache.

Anyone know what I should do now? I can't find vgetty-link so I cannot put

BTW I have a class 1 faxmodem, so I don't believe I can use mgetty-fax.

I am running potato, but possibly this will apply.

After some recent upgrades, I had what might be the same problem.
sendfax complained that it couldn't find a certain font. It looks for
the font metric cob.afm in /usr/share/enscript, whereas this is actually
located in /usr/share/enscript/afm. I created a symbolic link which
fixed the problem:

ln -s /usr/share/enscript/afm/cob.afm /usr/share/enscript/cob.afm

Later I looked at all the config files and I expect that changing the
AFMDIR line in /etc/hylafax/spool.fax would be the correct solution.

/etc/rc*.d/S20hylafax.  This also starts hfaxd.

 No I didn't solve the problem, yet !!!
 I Get the following warning: faxrunq hasn't been run in the last 24

 I've been told that I have to install a cron job that calls
 faxrunq in regular intervals, as root user.
 Because faxspool will only put the job into the Queue, but won't care
 about
 sending it out that's faxrunq's job, and cron is used to start faxrunq
 in the intervals I like.

 But I don't know how to install a cron job.
 And I don't have the cron job manual, so I have to download it.
 I Hope when I have the manual and the cron job is installed, that I will

 be able to send out a fax.

Whats a Phase B Error?

Heres a quote from Sam Leffler the principal author of Hylafax

 Phase B is point in the fax protocol where the sender+receiver
 first exchange digital information (e.g. each other's
 capabilities). Since the error code is uninformative the real
 reason for the failure is anyone's guess. If the problem is
 repeatable then you've probably got a firmware problem. If not,
 then it's likely a line condition problem.

Repeatable...you better believe it!!!

Firstly Diagnosing Your Modem

Here is a script to help analyse the reliability of your modem(s):

   * errorstats

To run type

./errorstats /var/spool/fax/etc/xferlog

The script analyses the xferlog file, substitute the appropriate location if
different from /var/spool/fax/etc

The output shows the failed fax transmissions by modem. Look particularly at
the number of Transmit Phase B errors.

Which modems are affected?

Transmit phase B errors seem to occur to some extent in all USR modems, this
is not always USR's fault. Quite often if your connecting to another
(cheap)fax modem or a line with multiple devices on it(ie answering machine)
or you have a bad line a Phase B error can easily occur.

If you suspect your modem is faulty make sure beforehand you try sending
faxes to a variety of machines and on different phone lines to ensure its
the modem at fault not external conditions.

OK, now thats clear...

It seems that in late 1995 through 1996 US Robotics shipped a whole bunch of
Sportsters modems with faulty firmware. If the modem is setup with hardware
flow control in fax class 2.0 it becomes extremely difficult to send
facsimiles without Transmit Phase B errors.

The modems can be divided into 3 categories

   * Modems up until mid to late 1995
 These modems should work without alteration with the standard hylafax
 installation scripts

 Here is a typical entry for one such modem

 Product type   US/Canada External
 OptionsV32bis,V.FC,V.34

 Clock Freq 20.16Mhz
 Eprom  256k

 Supervisor date04/18/95
 DSP date   03/31/95

 Supervisor rev 6.0.5
 DSP rev1.0.9

   * Modems with 1996 Firmware
 These modems have particular problems sending facsimiles in class 2.0

I agree. But you see, in this case, people had already
 presented the error to the author, (possibly zillions of times), and
 there wasw indeed a fix available. It is just so hard to find.

I hate bothering the author for stuff like this (which is why
 I have been trying so hard to reach a solution without bothering

Hylafax and gs-Aladdin

1998-01-12 Thread atheris
Has anybody managed to set up Hylafax using hylafax_4.0.1-1.i386.deb?

Hylafax says it needs gs-Aladdin, so I have installed
gs-aladdin_5.03-1.deb, but Hylafax then claims it's not present.
Probably I am missing a file. Or is hylafax_40.0.1 just a wrapper?

TIA for any help.

Hallo,

Its in the debian manual under diversion. If you use debmake then it will
do it for you.

BTW I have split up mgetty. You can simply conflict with mgetty-fax now.

mgetty is THE getty to use - i wouldn't consider using anything else
(unless i needed a hacked getty to do something special...hacking agetty
is a lot easier than hacking mgetty because it's much smaller)

hylafax sounds like it's THE fax program to use. I'd really like to be
able to use it, but not if the price was losing mgetty.

surely there's some way of making them work together...

probably the simplest (but not necessarily the best) solution would be for
there to be two mgetty packages - one with sendfax which conflicts with
hylafax, and one without which suggests hylafax...would have to be
co-ordinated with the mgetty maintainer Christoph Lameter
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

another similar option would be to split mgetty into two packages,
'mgetty' and 'sendfax'. mgetty could Suggest: sendfax | hylafax

yet another option would be to use the 'update-alternatives' script to
resolve the conflict...i think you said that it was only one program
called sendfax which conflicted.

which brings up the quick hack option - rename hylafax's 'sendfax' to
'sendhylafax' or something and make sure the rest of the hylafax suite
knows about the change (including the man pages!)

Re: Hylafax packages?

1996-11-05 Thread Christoph Lameter
It would probably be good to split mgetty into

mgetty
mgetty-fax
mgetty-voice
mgetty-doc

That does not solve the problem with accepting incoming faxes though.
Although hylaxfax does have something to offer in this regard. I have
no idea how to integrate that.

I have no experience with multi-binary packages. If someone else wants to
do it then tell me. Otherwise I have to make debmake multi-binary aware.

Sure, I like debmake :-)

For hylafax I need to create 2 packages, hylafax-server and
hylafax-client.

In your example rules file I've changed the line make
install PREFIX=debian/tmp to make install SERVERPREFIX=debian/server
CLIENTPREFIX=debian/client and edited the Makefile(s) appropriately.
Then later I do dpkg-gencontrol -phylafax-server -Pdebian/server and
the same method for the client package. No big problems (the control file
has separate sections for hylafax-server and hylafax-client).
