I have been using Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical USB and PS/2 Compatible for 20+ years and IOGEAR 8-Port MiniView PS/2 KVM switch (GCS78KIT) for 10+ years. Finding a KVM switch that worked correctly with Windows, Linux, and FreeBSD was non-trivial. For the past 2+ years (?), I have experienced berzerk mouse behavior with Debian 9, 10, and 11 with Xfce desktop on a Dell Latitude E6520 laptop with Intel/NVIDIA Optimus graphics -- when I move the mouse, there can be storms of rapid random mouse and keyboard events that open, close, resize, etc., Windows and/or menus, insert strings of characters that I have previously typed, etc.. It is not uncommon for the mouse pointer to be left in what appears to be a rectangular drag select mode. Moving the mouse is the trigger; especially when moving the mouse out of a window. Moving the mouse out of a Firefox window that is browsing a web site with heavy JavaScript is the most likely trigger (notably eBay and the photo viewer). I have been unable to isolate the problem to the E6520, the KVM switch, the mouse, Debian, nouveau, or Firefox. Debian 10 has always been the worst. Debian 11 had reduced frequency, but is still unusable. Debian 9 has the least frequent problems, and is what I run on the E6520 as a daily driver. I also have a desktop computer with an Intel DQ67SW motherboard and Intel Core i7-2600S processor (Intel HD Graphics 2000) connected to the KVM switch. Malfunctions are rare, but do occur. My strategy over the years has been to use major brand, mass produced, commodity hardware. It is best if the hardware is at least a few years old. Intel supports FOSS, so their hardware seems to

Logitech MX 5500 Keyboard + mouse problem since recent squeeze upgrade
I am running amd64 squeeze on an Intel Core i7 920-based machine with 8GB RAM. I built the machine about a year ago and have been running squeeze on it since. I use a Logitech ("Logicool") MX5500 wireless keyboard and mouse combo. For about the last month or so I hadn't updated packages -- not for any particular reason, just hadn't gotten around to it. The other day I did -- and now my keyboard is not working. The keyboard and mouse work fine in Windows (on another machine). The keyboard also is working as the machine is switched on as I can use it to select boot kernel in GRUB. It's once Debian starts booting that it breaks. This is exactly the same symptom I observed a few months ago when the upgrade from udev 151-1 to 151-3 or something introduced a mod to /lib/udev/rules.d/70-hid2hci.rules which was supposed to fix a udev bug but broke a lot of people's keyboards in the process. I successfully applied the manual fix for that at the time and have since allowed udev to upgrade naturally with no subsequent problems. So naturally, the first place I looked was udev. I note udev is now at version 157, so I wondered if it was broken again. There don't seem to be any bugs to this effect logged, so I thought I'd give udev from sid a go since it doesn't seem to introduce any dependency problems. Installing sid's udev (v158) did not fix it. I have googled around for this and don't see anything newer than the last flurry on this subject a few months ago as referenced above. It's almost like no one else is having this problem... :-( I noticed that the kernel has also been upgraded to 2.6.32-5-amd64, so I rebooted and selected the old kernel (2.6.32-3-amd64) and that did not help either. Is anyone else experiencing similar problems? Any advice? I am not sure what other information I should provide that would help diagnose the problem... Right now I am having to use this easily-most-powerful-machine-in-my-network via ssh only from other machines as I don't have a spare keyboard and mouse to switch to it. Mouse problem in VirtualBox client Lenny
I have VirtualBox 3.1.2r56127 running on amd64 Windows7 host, and an amd64 Lenny client. Everything seemed to work before I finished the vboxadd setup adding VirtualBox client support. Now the mouse responds to right click (opening a menu in right bottom corner of the window), but nothing else works mouse wise. After vboxadd setup my xorg.conf has following setup for mouse: Section "InputDevice" Driver "mouse" Identifier "Mouse[1]" Option "Buttons" "9" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Name" "VirtualBox Mouse Buttons" Option "Protocol" "explorerps/2" Option "Vendor" "Sun Microsystems Inc" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "CorePointer" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "vboxmouse" Identifier "Mouse[2]" Option "Device" "/dev/vboxguest" Option "Name" "VirtualBox Mouse" Option "Vendor" "Sun Microsystems Inc" Option "SendCoreEvents" EndSection I googled, and tried to replace those with Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Configured Mouse" Driver "vboxmouse" Option "CorePointer" EndSection but that made the Xorg unstartable. Wacom Mouse Problem
If gdm is started with the mouse on the wacom tablet, the mouse wont work. If gdm is started with the mouse off the tablet and the mouse is placed on the tablet after the sign in screen is displayed it will work. This is with a debian testing box and a 2.6.15 kernel. I discovered this about a month ago and posted messages on the debian-user list and on the Sourceforge wacom project site (at the time the linuxwacom.sf.net link did not work). This is no problem to me since I know how to make the mouse work. I mention it only in case others are still struggling with the issue. Tom George I posted this message to linuxwacom-discuss@lists.sourceforge.net this morning but it was returned with a message that a remote SMTP server had rejected the address. I am putting it on the debian-user list in case anyone is interested. Tom George -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Wacom Mouse Problem Still Unsolved
xorg and xserver-xorg-input-wacom successfully installed but the wacom mouse problem is unresolved. The wacom stylus will move the cursor and the buttons and scroll wheel on the pad work though the stylus often activates a feature when just passing over it and the buttons on the pad must be pressed several times to select and activate a feature. If the mouse is placed on the pad it can't move the cursor but its scroll wheel and buttons work. I have posted this information before - May 31st - and on the SourceForge Wacom Project help forum and have never had any responses. Perhaps there is nothing that can be done until the next upgrade but I miss my wacom mouse, the best mouse I've ever encountered. Testing/Wacom/Mouse Problem
The Wacom Graphire4 mouse worked perfectly with Sarge - best mouse I've ever had. After upgrading to Testing I have this strange set of affairs: The stylus will move the cursor, the mouse will not but the mouse buttons and scroll wheel work. I found and installed xserver-xorg-input-wacom. This did not help. I found xorgcfg was installed and ran it. In expert mode I can make the entries to add a wacom mouse but they have no effect. Not surprising as on starting xorgcfg there is an error message that a module was not installed. Using strace xorgcfg I found it was looking for /lib/modules/drivers/linux which does not exist. /lib/modules contains directories for the installed kernels including 2.6.15Jun3. I went to linuxwacom.sf.net and modified xorg.conf as shown in the HOWTO Adding Input Devices. This did not make any difference. Has anyone had success with the Wacom mouse in testing? If so, do you have any clues as to how to get my mouse working again? Tom George -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

But when i boot my debian with a kernel 2.6.12.1-k7, my mouse freeze. When I mouve the mouse, the light turn off and the cursor don't move. When grub is launch, the red light of my mouse stay on even if I move it. The light turn off only when the kernel is launch. I try to find an answer to configure my mouse and I wish you can help me. Mouse problem with testing
I have a problem with a USB Genius KYE wheelemouse running on testing beta4 i386. Basically it just moves up and down. I have tried more different settings than you can wave a stick at including making this troublesome mouse the only pointer as well as combining it with a PS/2 one using SendCoreEvents. I also tried taking the XF86Config from another older testing-based machine and tweaking it as necessary for the video hardware. The list of kernel modules loaded looks the same where input/usb/mouse is concerned. No problem running Knoppix on the same machine and the same mice (tried two) work elsewhere. There is also a PS/2 mouse and I notice that on other Redhat type machines data appears on /dev/input/mice for the PS/2 mouse as well as any USB mice yet this does not happen on the Debian machine. So there is something different about whatever is behind /dev/input/mice but I can't find any useful documentation on it. Any ideas ? Your symptoms sound as though you might be. If so you need Option "Device""/dev/gpmdata" Option "Protocol" "IntelliMouse" And also check that /etc/gpm.conf contains something like repeat_type=ms3 device= ; might be /dev/input/mice or ; /dev/psaux - I've no idea type=imps2 If you are fiddling with gpm, just hop into a terminal and edit /etc/gpm.conf, restart gpm (with '/etc/init.d/gpm restart') and see if the mouse is happy in the terminal. Actually, kernel 2.6 provides data from PS/2 mice to userland programs via the /dev/input/mice node. quake 2 mouse problem
Hi List, I just found out about "apt-get install quake2" :) Everything is fine apart from my mouse. It works only horizontally, but far too quickly, and doesn't seem to respond to the speed setting in the game settings. I'm using KDE and a Xinerama setup (I think Xinerama could be the problem here). Does anyone have any tips? I've done a google and saw some things about setting up the mouse correctly in vgalib, which I have done but this didn't change anything. Any help would be appreciated. Hi, for several days, I have a strange problem concerning WMaker and his windows like KMail, Konqueror, Opera, Mozilla, etc. After a few minutes, I can't click anymore in the Browser or Kmail, but I can move, resize and close the window. This sounds like a wrong mouse protocol - try temporarily disabling gpm, and then trying different mouse protocols in X. Usually PS/2 is correct for these mice, but sometimes it's the IMPS/2 one. If that fixes it, then you can run gpm with that protocol, and then set X to use /dev/gpmdata as it's device. A few people have been complaining about similar problems on #debian, and it seems to be caused by the current libc b0rkage in sid. Well, just in case someone else runs across the problem, updating from the 1.32 point release to the 1.32b point release fixed the problem. 1.32b is kind of hard to find though, so look in ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/linux. -Alex signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

odd mouse problem
I've got a minor mouse problem. My USB mouse works great in just about everything, but I just discovered one application of the utmost importance that it doesn't work in. Quake 3. :) Ok, so it's not really of the utmost importance. :) All of my buttons work just fine, but I'm getting no actual MOVEMENT from the mouse. It works flawlessly in everything else I've ever thrown at it, but it just refuses to do any moving in Quake 3. Any suggestions on what it might be, or any way to track down the culprit? Any help is greatly appreciated. TIA. :) -Alex signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

You may have accidentally installed GPM and did not configure /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 accordingly. Despite other posters despise GPM, I love it. All you have to do is to let the X read from repeater. you wrote it yourself but it says "Generated by dexconf" at the top? What I did was remove those lines saying ### BEGIN DEBCONF SECTION and END... then I removed all references to the "Generic Mouse" even in the "Server Layout" section. And I made a Option "SendCoreEvents""true" entry to my "Configured Mouse"... also make sure you didnt accidentally install "gpm" along the way ps -A | grep gpm HTH Shawn --- Christian Banik <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Dear Debian Users, > > i've got problems with my wheel mouse. Device="/dev/input/mice" is for USB mice. Device="/dev/psaux" is for PS/2 mice. (I would expect that a 2-button mouse is PS/2 rather than USB) Also, for a 2-button mouse, the protocol should be "PS/2" ("ImPS/2" is for wheel mice). Hope this helps... -- P. M. Also check to be sure GPM is not running, I reccomend removing it completely unless you have a specific use for it: apt-get remove gpm > Section "Device" > Identifier "Generic Video Card" > Driver "nv" > Option "dpms" "true" > EndSection your using the nv driver not the nvidia driver? Question: does the mouse freeze or does the whole X session freeze? that is, can you CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE to kill/restart X or not? If not, then maybe its a nv driver bug. > Section "ServerLayout" > Identifier "Default Layout" > Screen "Default Screen" > InputDevice "Generic Keyboard" > InputDevice "Configured Mouse" > InputDevice "Generic Mouse" > EndSection I'd also remove the Generic Mouse entry from above to corrispond with the removal of the section And I reccomend backing up your config file before doing this so you can undo it easily if needed. Also are you using a KVM? many KVMs don't like wheels. even my KVM which the manual says it supports wheels, I've only got it to run with a wheel once or twice, and the rest of the time the wheel doesn't seem to work. so I hookup a 2nd pointer, a cordless USB trackball to my main desktop so I can use the wheel on it. nate -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I'm having a USB mouse problem. When I boot up it looks like all the modules I need are loaded correctly. If so then you need to make your mouse device in XF86Config-4 /dev/gpmdata, and in /etc/gpm.conf make sure that repeat_type=raw If that gives no joy post up your XF86Config-4 file. As for editors - dangerous question! - doesn't emacs21 come with Debian Junior? But whatever you do DON'T abandon Debian again - this is curable! Mouse problem in X
I've used Mandrake for the last two years, but always wanted to move to Debian. I installed release 2r2 on my old box a year ago, but couldn't get my mouse to work in an x window, so moved back to another distro. I've just installed Woody on my main box. Everything went fine until I started an X session. Then... mouse pointer as windowmanager was loading, then pointer disappeared. The desktop menus open at random, it seems, I have a mouse pointer, but it's not working properly. I'm using XF86-4 with the Vesa driver for a nVideo Riva2 card. My mouse is a standard ps2 wheelmouse. This may be a hint as to what's gone wrong. I don't have the message to hand, I'm having to use windoze to send this. After starting X for the first time this was in the information on tty2. Generic mouse loaded Configured mouse loaded. So it seems that I have two mice in my config file. I'm guessing that that's causing a conflict. I'm a Debian newbie and don't have a great deal of experience with working with console apps. I don't know which editor would be best for me to read and edit my xf86-4 config file. Could anyone give me advise? In other Debian-based distros (storm and Corel) I've had no mouse problems. Could the two entries be the cause? And if I need to edit config files, which is the best console editor to use? I have even installed debian jr so I should have a good selection, but haven't a clue what is included in a standard debian installation and which is best for somebody who knows Linux to some extent but has always worked in a windowed environment. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Mouse problem
Thanks to everyone who responded regarding the mouse problem. I fixed the problem by changing XF86Config as follows, along with a new link from /dev/mouse and - killing gpm. I don't use any program that run it, and don't know what programs do, and missed the fact that it was installed by default. Section "Pointer" Protocol"PS/2" Device "/dev/mouse" # BaudRate1200 # Emulate3Timeout 50 # Resolution 100 Buttons 3 # Emulate3Buttons EndSection -- Sincerely, David Smead http://www.amplepower.com. Potato _is_ being actively maintained, and will continue to be until Woody is released. It is just not having new packages or new versions of old packages added. Security fixes and other critical fixes are being backported. -- John Hasler [EMAIL PROTECTED] (John Hasler) Dancing Horse Hill Elmwood, WI -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
