Did you upgrade NS from the libc5 based to the glibc2 (aka libc6) based
version? When you went from 1.3 to 2.0, you also went from libc5 to a
libc6 system.

C.L.P.M. crashes Netscape 4.05 under Debian

Hi y'all:

I have been having a strange problem for the past month or so:
I've been using Netscape 4.05 under Debian with Kernel 2.0.34
(if it matters) as my Newsreader for a long time, with no
problems. But whenever I try to read the group comp.lang.perl.misc,
it starts updating the messages and then crashes Netscape -- right
back to a blue screen. Only this one group has this effect,
and only in the past month or so. I have NO idea where to begin
looking for a solution. Has anybody got any ideas?

Hi,

I'm not sure if I have similar problem to your, but anyway. Here how my
Netscape gets stuck:
1. Goto Debian.org -- Mailing list archives -- debian-devel (october)
or actually to any big archive for this matter. It starts to read messages
and at about 86% gets stuck. No response, have to use kill -9. Sometimes it
happends when you click on some message and after that click Back button.

I just tried it 2 times. Got stuck in both cases :) I have slink+netscape
4.5, but it happended to all previous versions of netscape as well.

Netscape 4.05 und Staroffice 4.0 unter Debian 2.0

1998-11-07 Thread Rudolf G. Schöbel
Hallo Linuxgemeinde.

Seit kurzem verwende ich Debian 2.0. Jetzt taucht ein Problem auf, das
ich unter Debian 1.3 nicht hatte. Beim Aufruf von Netscape 4.05 oder
Staroffice 4.0 erhalte ich die Fehlermeldung:

  ./netscape: can't load library 'libXpm.so.4'

Das Netscape, was

http://www.murcia.net/mozilla/files/ns405es_unix.zip

Eee... no he dicho

Communicator 4.05 (otra version no vale, desafortunadamente), os pediria
siempre, no?

 http://www.murcia.net/mozilla/files/ns405es_unix.zip

I've recently moved to Debian 2.0 from slackware 3.2 (kernel 2.0.29), and
I am having trouble getting AOL's instant messenger (AIM) and netscape

and I installed and added java support to the kernel. Does anyone know
what is causing this problem?

It's the fact that Debian 2.0 uses glibc, whereas AIM is linked against libc5.
Get the jdk1.1-runtime package and install it. Then set the JAVA_HOME shell
variable in your .bashrc or .tcshrc:

bash: export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jdk1.1
tcsh: setenv JAVA_HOME /usr/lib/jdk1.1

If that doesn't get things working, lemme know.

P.S.: I rarely use bash, so anyone seeing any problems with my syntax
please correct me ;)

This is due to a bug in netscape. You've only noticed it now because
libc used in debian is less forgiving. The solution is to install
netscape with the aid of netscape4 debian package (it is in contrib
section I think).

This might be the problem where Netscape's libnullplugin.so fails when
it hits a page with a plugin that you don't have. To get around this,
just REMOVE it from the plugin directory. Don't rename it; you have to

It's a bug in Netscape, however there is a cure. If you set
LD_PRELOAD to /lib/libBrokenLocale.so.1 the problems go away. If you
are using the Debian wrapper, the easiest way to get it set is to
edit /usr/bin/X11/netscape (it's a script). Look for the folloing
section and add the export LD_PRELOAD= line:

#
# Set some env vars to make things work better

Fortify (see www.fortify.net) will provide 128 bit encryption with either

First, get the libc6 version of Netscape from
'ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/4.05/development/english/unix/linux20_glibc2/'
(then select which version you want, stand-alone/professional etc).

Second, get 'Fortify-1.2.3-unix.tar.gz' from 'http://www.fortify.net'
and
run it against the binary of Netscape 4.05.

I haven't actually used 128-bit encryption (that I know of) so I can't
guarantee that Fortify will do what you want, but I ran Fortify and it
claimed to have updated Netscape to 128 bit encryption. See the README.html
in the fortify package.

You could download the netscape 4.05 on tar.gz format and netscape 3.01
package from debian !
So you copy the netscape 4.05 to the /tmp directory and install the
package.

I still not found the netscape 4.05 package but it works with the older
one (3.01) !

Why should there be a netscape installer package? It seems we need it. The
default installer seems to create some security hole I heard somewhere.
IIRC the netscape4 package from hamm should work on bo systems too.

Is there somebody who can help me with my NETSCAPE 4.05???
I took the netscape.tar.gz package from Netscape's home. I had done the

there! I done this, but netscape is not running yet!!!
I hope that somebody can tell me all conigurations to do!!!

Thanks a lot!

Michael,

First of all what version of Debian are you running? It is Bo or Hamm?

I have hamm and just installed Netscape using the Dselect program and
work
just fine. I am not for sure but I don't think it will install Netscape 4.x
unless you have hamm installed. (The Dselect Program that is). You do not
need to try compiling or configuring Netscape. This is all taken care of by
the Debian Install Package.

Again, need to know what version of Debian you are running then maybe I
can help a little. I have sucessfully installed both Netscape 3.03 on bo
and 4.04 on hamm. Let me know

For one thing, how are you trying to run netscape? (if you are just using
the command 'netscape', you probably don't have it in your path. Try one
of the following methods:

A) in /etc/profile, add the path to netscape to your PATH, log out and
back in again.

B) cd to /usr/bin, and give the command
ln -s /path to netscape/netscape netscape

C) Use the full path and filename of netscape to start netscape

Plug-ins in Netscape 4.05

1998-05-16 Thread Bob Nielsen
This is probably not a Debian problem, but I've noticed that since I
installed Netscape 4.05, I can't get any plug-ins to work. I've installed
rvplayer and acroread from Debian packages, as well as UMP, which works
with the timidity package.

These all worked fine with netscape 3.04. If I look at 'about
plug-ins' in netscape, they show up, but for realplayer, it shows an
extension of rpm, rather than ram (I wonder if it would try to play a Red
Hat package?)

There appears to be no way to edit the plug-in list, as there was in the
earlier netscape versions. Following the help links indicates
that there should be an option to edit plug-ins in edit/preferences, but
it doesn't appear there.

Netscape doesn't seem to use the information in /etc/mime.types or
/etc/mailcap.

Does anyone know how to get the plug-ins to work?

Bob

# setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/X11R6/lib (if using csh/tcsh)
or
# export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib (if using bash/sh/ksh(?))

If that works, modify your .cshrc, .profile, .bash_profile or whatever
file gets read by your shell on login. If you're using bash, you can
modify /etc/profile, which will make the changes affect all users.
