What happens if you post the laptop, then engage the hard drive after you boot into a Linux live usb? Understand that if the HDD has bad electronics, anything you plug it into could be damaged. Do you have an anti-static wrist strap and spare anti-static bags? No, But I got myself a meeting with my friend who runs a laptop repairing shop, who is willing to give me access to his hdd casing. Hello everyone, I have got some good news. The hdd is now back from the dead, alive and working well. I went to my friend who had that casing. So I created a GPT,and have now installed Windows 7, on a 80 GB partition. I haven't run any tests on the hdd as such, it seem to work nice. Please suggests some tests I could do using standard linux tools, if possible It will help us benchmark the hdd! Windows was very bad again and it created two primary partitions, one 79 GB for the windows, and the other 86 mb for bootloader. So tomorrow, I will be installing debian on the remaining space. Now my question is, What should I choose? Logical volume? or Primary Volume? I think I cannot create more than 4 primary volumes on a hdd, and since two are already occupied, I should create /home, /, /usr and /var all logical volumes. (Choice of partitions on the basis of discussions above) Will choosing logical volumes harm any performance on the hdd? I have also decided to choose xfce as my primary desktop, unless I get more knowledgeable in using tiling window managers. Apart from all that I would like to sincerely thank each and everyone of you, I never felt that I was alone, always cheered up by you guys. No wonder hdd are cheap in some countries say 100-150 $, but here in this country, I just could not have afforded an hdd without getting some credit from others. So you guys do not know how much happy I am right now, and how much relieved I am feeling now! Thanks a ton for my support. I can setup my debian box now and prepare for gsoc! :) Do you have a live CD/DVD/USB/SD? You might ask your friend to let you download Knoppix, for instance, and burn it to a CD. If it boots the live/install image, power back down the proper way and attach the hard disk that is being recalcitrant. Then watch it like a hawk while it boots, to be sure you got the boot priorities in the BIOS right. BIOSses can be recalcitrant, too. It might take several tries to get the priorities right. Re: About to format the whole laptop, need some partitioning advice.
I am reading a lot on LVM, and it seems that I have a small doubt. I found this on tldp HOWTO on LVM: root on LVM requires an initrd image that activates the root LV. If a kernel is upgraded without building the necessary initrd image, that kernel will be unbootable. Newer distributions support lvm in their mkinitrd scripts as well as their packaged initrd images, so this becomes less of an issue over time. I am not able to understand this but will it affect me on debian? Also while I am on the partitioner page on the debian-installer, there is one choice like: Guided: Use entire disc and setup as LVM Now since I am doing a dual boot and windows is already installed, I feel I cannot use this option as it will wipe the partition used by windows. Can I set LVM using some other method? ravenclaw# lvextend --size +1G --resizefs /dev/ravenclaw/chroots Extending logical volume chroots to 13.00 GiB Logical volume chroots successfully resized resize2fs 1.42.9 (4-Feb-2014) Filesystem at /dev/mapper/ravenclaw-chroots is mounted on /srv/chroots; on-line resizing required old_desc_blocks = 1, new_desc_blocks = 1 The filesystem on /dev/mapper/ravenclaw-chroots is now 3407872 blocks long. ravenclaw# df /srv/chroots Filesystem1K-blocksUsed Available Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/ravenclaw-chroots 13286512 4632220 7966824 37% /srv/chroots So you can see the size increased by 1GiB and we didn't even have to unmount the filesystem--it all happened online with no interruption in service. Re: About to format the whole laptop, need some partitioning advice.
Yes. Partition manually, and create a partition to hold *all* your Linux data. However, rather than selecting a filesystem type, you choose Physical volume for LVM, and then configure LVM. It will then let you use this partition for a new LVM volume group. Once that's done you can add as many logical volumes as you like, and assign mountpoints to them, make swapspace etc, and then continue with the install as usual. I have 685 GB free space. I choose 585 GB as my primary partition and set it as LVM. Should I keep the bootable flag ON or OFF for this partition. Also After that how can I create sub-volume? Re: About to format the whole laptop, need some partitioning advice. [Solved]
You usually can get away with a much smaller root filesystem if you use a separate /usr. The good thing is that you won't run into trouble with dozens of kernels installed (they take more than 100MB in /lib/modules each). I am still learning. And I am not that strict on space as I have a 750GB hdd, but still that was a very knowledgeable fact. Looks generally fine. One thing I would have done (and which I cannot see whether you did it) is to leave some free space in the VG so you can extend existing filesystems or create new ones when you need to. I have set aside 100 GB as free unallocated space. It helps in our understanding if you try to use the correct terminology. What I think you wanted to say is something like: I created one big primary partition and used that as Physical Volume for my Volume Group 'Debian'. I created all filesystems in Logical Volumes in that Volume Group. I capitalized terms specific to LVM. As I said I am still learning. :) thanks for the useful pointers. So I should officially mark this thread as solved. 1)I found out what are the various folders in the linux file system are used for, in a more practical discussion. 2)I found out some pros and cons of different Desktop Managers and Window Managers. 3)I found out the various different partitioning schemes and also figured out why LVM was so good for me. I also created the partitions myself after learning about them. 4)Also I revived my almost dead hardisk after important inputs from you guys. Cheers, I am here to stay for a long long time. :)
Need to make sure I have the nvidia proprietary driver running.
Hello list, I have a laptop with gt 630M 2GB graphics card. I installed the linux headers and the drivers using this command: aptitude -r install linux-headers-$(uname -r|sed 's,[^-]*-[^-]*-,,') nvidia-kernel-dkms [I referred this wiki : https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers ] I also created the Xorg.conf file as mentioned in the wiki. But when I rebooted my system Xorg failed to start. So i figured that I am having a GPU with optimus support and I do not need the Xorg.conf file but instead I need the bumblebee package. So I installed the bumblebee package. Everything seem to work now except this: Under system-Nvidia server settings when I open It i get a message: You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. But there was already a post in bumblebee wiki which said: Warning: If you choose to install bumblebee-nvidia and the dependent nvidia driver packages, during postinst, you will see a debconf prompt warning you that you need to create a xorg.conf file in order to use the proprietary nvidia driver. This prompt only applies to non-Optimus users, i.e. single Nvidia GPU systems. Do NOT allow debconf to create a xorg.conf file, and do NOT run nvidia-xconfig! (This prompt always appears when you install nvidia packages through the repositories, and it currently does not detect Optimus/bumblebee users. See 735049 for a brief explanation.) So I am pretty sure that I do not need to run that nvidia-xconfig command. But I just want to make sure that I am running the nvidia driver successfully. Stop X, modprobe -r the unwanted driver, modprobe nvidia, start X? I am not able to find out which driver I need to modprobe? I posted the output of lsmod before. If you can help me there?
Re: Need to make sure I have the nvidia proprietary driver running.
You should remove i915. You should have searched the Internet yourself. I used https://startpage.com/ with the search terms i915 wiki en and e.g. found https://wiki.debian.org/KernelModesetting I also found this http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16t=110314 It means that I have got two problems. 1) The nvidia driver not working 2) The bumblebee module is not working. Or the two are related to each other. I feel that I should remove all the packages including the linux headers and the nvidia driver and then restarting the process again. -- Regards, Anubhav Yadav Imperial College of Engineering and Research, Pune. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: [i3]Colors and transparency problems with rxvt-unicode-color
I use URxvt*background: [95]#00, which applies a 95% transparency to black. That might be useful to you. Yes that did it. Thanks a lot. I was also having 'r' small instead of capital. Note that RXVT isn't XTerm. You'll probably find that your $TERM is 'rxvt-unicode-256color'. Yes and I changed that in the .bashrc too. But didn't help much. However uncommenting the line force_color_prompt=yes did make my prompt (user@hostname:$) coloured. But that was the same color as my background. Not able to get mpd/ncmpcpp to work
Hello list, I have installed mpd and ncmpcpp. In the /etc/mpd.conf these are the changes that I have made music_directory /home/neo1691/Music/ usermpd #groupnogroup (This was commented out by default) That's it nothing else! Whenever I start my laptop, the service mpd is already started mpd 3304 0.0 0.0 411928 820 ?Ssl 13:04 0:00 /usr/bin/mpd /etc/mpd.conf When I start ncmpcpp, pressing u does not update the list, and my playlist always remains blank. This is what I have tried so far: 1) I tried to change the permissions of one or two music files inside /home/neo1691/Music and granted read permissions to everyone. Result: ncmpcpp is still plain blank. 2) I also tried changing the music_directory to its default value, ie(/var/lib/mpd/music), copied some music there and then started ncmpcpp. Result: Nothing again. 3) I tried changing the user option in ncmpcpp to neo1691, then the service mpd would never start. Re: Not able to get mpd/ncmpcpp to work
When I press 'u' in ncmpcpp it says (at the bottom) Database update started! Yes it says, Database update started and immediately afterwards it says Database update finished. and at the top bottom, right below Volume % you should see a capital 'U' in square brackets, possibly with other letters as well (I also have 'r' for repeat mode). Does this happen for you? Yes it has an [xU] in those brackets and the disappears immediately afterwards. Make sure also the directory is accessible by user 'mpd'. Also, to see the music you have to go to the Browse screen (F4), by defaults it starts in the Playlist screen (which is blank if you don't specifically add songs to it). Yes when I go to browse, I do see all the folders, but no songs. Co-incidently all the folders have read access to others and group but the music file inside do not have read access. For example: ll ~/Music/ -rw--- 1 neo1691 neo1691 5683395 Nov 1 02:38 [Songs.PK] 02 - Dhat Teri Ki.mp3 -rw--- 1 neo1691 neo1691 8809935 Oct 2 17:46 [Songs.PK] Ramleela - 07 - Nagada Sang Dhol.mp3 -rw--- 1 neo1691 neo1691 7882890 Oct 2 17:46 [Songs.PK] Ramleela - 09 - Ram Chahe Leela.mp3 drwxr-xr-x 2 neo1691 neo1691 4096 Feb 12 12:27 Sp drwxr-xr-x 2 neo1691 neo1691 4096 Feb 12 12:27 Sum41 drwxr-xr-x 2 neo1691 neo1691 4096 Feb 12 12:27 System of a Down .. So I guess the problem is related to the directory having read access to mpd. Weird! What did you read that advised changing xorg to xorge? Damn I don't know what happened to me while typing. Sorry. \ This is what I actually did! The original line was xrdb -merge $RESOURCEFILE and xrdb -merge $USRRESOURCES I just removed the -merge options. Re: .Xresources not loading on start
Okay before doing what you stated, I restored the file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/30x11- common_xresources to original 1. Prevent lightdm from being started: update-rc.d lightdm disable('enable' reverts this). Done 2. Delete $HOME/.Xdefaults (It's not used). Never used it in the first place. 3. Delete $HOME/.xinitrc (It fouls up Debian's X). I tried to use it never worked. So deleted it. 4. Move $HOME/.xsession out of the way. Its not there. 5. Repair self-inficted damage with apt-get --reinstall install x11-common Ok did this too! 6. Have 'xterm*background: red' as the only line in $HOME/.Xresources. Ok 7. Reboot, execute startx and bring up an xterm. Here are my results: Running startx logged me in to xfce, I opened up a xterm and the background was red. Next I enabled lightdm: #update-rc.d lightdm enable Rebooted and from lightdm logged in to i3. Opened up an xterm and the background was red. Now I used my original .Xresources and reboot. Again same error! 'xrdb -merge .Xresources' and 'xrdb -overide .Xresources' will not work Regards, Anubhav Yadav Imperial College of Engineering and Research, Pune. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. The '-query' option to xrdb is useful. Re: .Xresources not loading on start
This suggests that the resources that are loaded into your X server by default contain settings with a higher priority than your own .Xresources. The xrdb -merge merges your settings, but leaves the higher priority resources there as well, so your settings seem to have no effect. The xrdb -load throws away all settings including the higher priority ones, thus letting your settings take effect. Use the appres tool to find out what the actual settings are that are loaded in your X server. If this confirms the theory, you can start finding out where the higher priority settings come from. Hi! appres tool gives me this output, and these are the same values that are in my current .Xresources! Re: .Xresources not loading on start
Just in case: the command xrdb -merge .Xresources is definitely run when X is called. The resources in .Xresources are merged with those in /etc/X11. If you issue the same command from a terminal nothing happens to alter the resources available because they have already been merged. xrdb .Xresources (xrdb -load .Xresources) wipes out the resources loaded from /etc/X11 and gives you only what is in .Xresources. Your initial understanding of this led you away from a solution to the actual problem. Not to worry; everyone does it and everybody learns. :) So you mean to say that the resources were already being merged but actually came into effect when I increased their priority or made them more specific by add the class xterm* before the settings! I tried to do this before, I remember very well, but I used Xterm instead of xterm. It was mentioned here. http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/90608/xterm-not-loading-color-schemes When that never worked I posted on the mailing list. So my question is what do you mean by Xterm, and then how is xterm different? I can guess it has something to do with the class of applications/ instance of applications! -- Regards, Anubhav Yadav Imperial College of Engineering and Research, Pune. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: .Xresources not loading on start
Re-read what Vincent Zweije wrote, especially his first mail. Then re-read the answers in the stackexchange link you gave, concentrating on what is said about specific and priority. Now re-read what you wrote: Yes, Vincent said that the default .Xresources contain some settings with a higher priority. And the stackexchange comments says that if there is an Xresource somewhere that has more specific settings like XTerm*background then it overides the generic settings like *background. *customization: -color is from /etc/X11/Xresources/x11-common. It tells X what application specific resource file in /etc/X11/app-defaults to use. Normally the resource file used corresponds to the application name; for example, XTerm for xterm. The customization resource adds -color to the normal resource file name and so XTerm-color is used. It's very confusing to me. From what I interpret, the *customization: -color simply selects XTerm-color resources instead of XTerm from /etc/X11/app-defaults? Note that .Xresources is merged with XTerm-color but from your re-reading (and from your experience) you should realise it does not mean everything in it is applied. Take your *original* .Xresources and, in the light of your reading, look at the output (color1 etc in particular) of 'appres XTERM xterm'. color1 is #f92672 Now add the line *customization: to the original .Xresources and run the appres command again, Can you predict what should happen to an xterm when you start X? I am typing this *before* I make any changes in my .Xresources and before xrdb .Xresources I feel that this should overide the *customization: -color settings in /etc/x11/Xresources and the settings in XTerm should be loaded. Okay after adding the said line in .Xresources (*customization:) and reloading them (xrdb .Xresource) color1 is xterm*color1: #f92672 Which is the same? Am I missing something? But when I press $mod+pause the control mod popups appears on the i3statusbar and if I press l (lock) nothing happens and the dialogue box disappears! If I open up a terminal and `echo $PATH`, then my folder, ~/bin is seen there. But if I run this specific command: `tr '\0' '\n' /proc/$(pidof i3)/environ | grep PATH` then the $PATH doesn't have the concerned folder. Also, will adding this line : `neo1691 ALL=(ALL) ALL, NOPASSWD: /home/neo1691/bin/i3exit` will stop asking passwords if I run i3exit. I just want to make sure of the syntax! Here are the contents of my script: #!/bin/sh lock() { i3lock } case $1 in lock) i3lock -d -i /home/neo1691/.i3/i3lock_screen.png -n ;; logout) i3-msg exit ;; suspend) sudo pm-suspend ;; hibernate) sudo pm-hibernate ;; reboot) sudo reboot ;; shutdown) sudo halt ;; *) echo Usage: $0 {lock|logout|suspend|hibernate|reboot|shutdown} exit 2 esac exit 0 This script is stored in home/neo1691/bin/ directory and the directory is added in the PATH variable by adding 'export PATH=${PATH}:/home/neo1691/bin' in my .~/.bashrc file I used sudo visudo to edit the /etc/sudoers file and added this line at the end: neo1691 ALL=(ALL) ALL, NOPASSWD: /home/neo1691/bin/i3exit After a restart when I run 'i3exit suspend' from my terminal, I am still asked for my password. To sum it up here are the problems that I want to solve: 1) How can I run the script without asking for a password? 2) Is exporting the PATH variable like I had did is the correct way to add my directory to PATH, if I want the other processes to also access the scripts in that folder? Re: Unable to execute a script without asking for sudo password, even after editing sudoers file.
That is your problem: You have configured sudo to allow you to run i3exit as root. But you don't. You run i3exit as yourself (without sudo), and IT then uses sudo pm-suspend (and others). Two possible ways forward: - Call it using sudo i3exit and remove the calls to sudo from inside the script - Call it as yourself (= just i3exit) and give yourself the privileges to run reboot, halt and others as sudo. Hope this helps Hi basically I just want i3exit to run without asking any password, as I will be using this script to be executed by i3. So I guess your second option will suit me. If I do something like this: neo1691 ALL=(ALL) ALL, NOPASSWD: /usr/sbin/pm-suspend, /usr/sbin/pm-hibernate -- Regards, Anubhav Yadav Imperial College of Engineering and Research, Pune. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Unable to execute a script without asking for sudo password, even after editing sudoers file.
The default ~/.profile on Debian already has: # set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists if [ -d $HOME/bin ] ; then PATH=$HOME/bin:$PATH fi I think I am really messed up in that situation. If I run 'echo $PATH' in a terminal session then this is the output that I get: /home/neo1691/bin:/home/neo1691/.rvm/gems/ruby-2.0.0-p451@railstutorial_rails_4_0/bin:/home/neo1691/.rvm/gems/ruby-2.0.0-p451@global/bin:/home/neo1691/.rvm/rubies/ruby-2.0.0-p451/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games:/home/neo1691/.rvm/bin:/home/neo1691/bin:/home/neo1691/.rvm/bin:/home/neo1691/.rvm/bin As you can see there is a lot of repetition over there. So to be precise, I first used my ~/.bashrc file to export the PATH variable. export PATH=${PATH}:/home/neo1691/bin I remember that when I did this, there was no file called .profile in my home directory. As I can see now, there exists one maybe because I installed rvm and maybe rvm created a .profile Here are the contents of my ~/.profile # ~/.profile: executed by the command interpreter for login shells. # This file is not read by bash(1), if ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bash_login # exists. # see /usr/share/doc/bash/examples/startup-files for examples. # the files are located in the bash-doc package. # the default umask is set in /etc/profile; for setting the umask # for ssh logins, install and configure the libpam-umask package. #umask 022 # if running bash if [ -n $BASH_VERSION ]; then # include .bashrc if it exists if [ -f $HOME/.bashrc ]; then . $HOME/.bashrc fi fi # set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists if [ -d $HOME/bin ] ; then PATH=$HOME/bin:$PATH fi PATH=$PATH:$HOME/.rvm/bin # Add RVM to PATH for scripting I also saw that there is a ~/.bash_profile whose contents are [[ -s $HOME/.profile ]] source $HOME/.profile # Load the default .profile [[ -s $HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm ]] source $HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm # Load RVM into a shell session *as a function* Now you just have to make sure whatever method you use to start X is also sourcing ~/.environment. There is no such file called ~/.environment Depends on what you want to achieve. Because you put $HOME/bin at the end of $PATH (instead of in front as ~/.environment does) a script with the same name in one of the other directories will take precedence over yours, which may or may not be what you want. I created the script i3exit, and I believe that there is no such other script by that name in the system [1] according to apt-file there is no 'i3exit' file in Debian. Yes thats right! Now I would really like to know as to what is the best practice to export a PATH variable? I mean as a linux user, I should know what happens when the operating system boots? What files are read? What are the uses of .xsession? .xinitrc? .profile? .bash_profile? .environment? /etc/X11/Xsession? And what changes when I use lightdm to startup my system? And what again changes if I install replace my default shell from bash to zsh? Right now what is happening is that I am not able to run the script i3exit with i3 window manager? If I run this command: `tr '\0' '\n' /proc/$(pidof i3)/environ | grep PATH` I get the output as: PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games And there is no mention of my local bin directory (~/bin) So please guide me in this regards! -- Regards, Anubhav Yadav Imperial College of Engineering and Research, Pune. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: [i3]Not able to get the reboot/suspend script work.
Lightdm also uses /etc/X11/Xsession, which does a lot more than starting a window manager. However, it does source ~/.xsession. I created an .xsession and the contents were as follows: #!/bin/bash # Set PATH PATH=$HOME/bin:$PATH Yet I am not able to call my i3exit script ( which I have stored in ~/bin directory) from i3. Because somehow the PATH variable is not set according to either i3 or according to lightdm. I also have other problems with lightdm, which I would like to discuss but lets stay on the topic for now. Once you feel you have to alter a system file to do something (which WM to use?) which affects only one user you have lost it. Your ~/.xsession is perfectly alright. Adding to /usr/share/xsessions or altering lightdm.conf are not actions to be taken as a matter of course and are usually not warranted. Yes that's the lesson you taught me when I messed up with my global .Xresources directory. ( Remember ) :) I somehow need to get /home/neo1691/bin into my PATH variable before starting i3, or before starting lightdm. Re: Unable to execute a script without asking for sudo password, even after editing sudoers file.
Don't know what rvm is, but I'm quite sure it didn't create your ~/.profile. rvm is ruby version manager[1]. I installed it recently when I started learning ruby on rails. But it did change yours. I don't like it when programs mess with my files. That's what, Did you see how i got so many repetitions in my $PATH. At this moment if I just echo $PATH and place each directory on one line, this is the repetition that I get: /home/neo1691/bin [*] :/home/neo1691/.rvm/gems/ruby-2.0.0-p451@railstutorial_rails_4_0/bin /home/neo1691/.rvm/gems/ruby-2.0.0-p451@global/bin /home/neo1691/.rvm/rubies/ruby-2.0.0-p451/bin /usr/local/bin /usr/bin /bin /usr/local/games /usr/games /home/neo1691/.rvm/bin [**] /home/neo1691/bin [*] /home/neo1691/.rvm/bin [**] /home/neo1691/.rvm/bin [**] There you see the repetitions. I am really concerned about that. Sorry, my mistake, I meant ~/.profile. ~/.environment is where I keep environment variables and I source it from ~/.profile. That is a really good idea. But I loved the idea of .profile If I recall correctly lightdm does not source ~/.profile, so I do it in ~/.xsessionrc. So I need to create this one. The logical place for that would be ~/.profile (or a file sourced in ~/.profile to not clutter it), since that should be read on login. So the practice is to store all your variables in ~/.profile? Except that it's not read by some display managers so I had to use ~/.xsessionrc for that. And assuming that I have my .profile set up with my PATH variable that I want to use, I can create a ~/.xsessionrc and just source ~/.profile in it? That should work right? Re: [i3]Not able to get the reboot/suspend script work.
The basic problem is that lightdm in Debian hard-codes the path https://launchpadlibrarian.net/94971962/01_set-default-path.patch Yes now I know why this is happening. Thanks! and there appears to be no system-wide way to alter it from within lightdm. It doesn't matter what WM is used - a *user* has little choice but to alter $PATH by employing the facilities provided by X. Here are some settings that I found in lightdm.conf that may be of interest here? # General configuration # # start-default-seat = True to always start one seat if none are defined in the configuration # greeter-user = User to run greeter as # minimum-display-number = Minimum display number to use for X servers # minimum-vt = First VT to run displays on # user-authority-in-system-dir = True if session authority should be in the system location # guest-account-script = Script to be run to setup guest account # log-directory = Directory to log information to # run-directory = Directory to put running state in # cache-directory = Directory to cache to # xsessions-directory = Directory to find X sessions # xgreeters-directory = Directory to find X greeters Anything that can help me? I am interested in the xsessions-directory line Personally I would follow the suggestion given in https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2014/03/msg01691.html Yes that helped me, I am able to now use the script thanks to xsessionrc. to use .xsessionrc to hold 'export PATH=$HOME/bin:$PATH' because it is an environment variable. Please see Xsession(5) I used my ~/.profile to export path variable. Here are the contents of my ~/.profile: # if running bash if [ -n $BASH_VERSION ]; then # include .bashrc if it exists if [ -f $HOME/.bashrc ]; then . $HOME/.bashrc fi fi # set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists if [ -d $HOME/bin ] ; then PATH=$HOME/bin:$PATH fi PATH=$PATH:$HOME/.rvm/bin # Add RVM to PATH for scripting And then I used ~/.xsesionrc to source ~/.profile. Here are the contents of .xsessionrc: #! /bin/sh if [ -f $HOME/.profile ]; then . $HOME/.profile fi There is another approach: If it was decided by the *administrator* that *all* users were to have access to suspending, shutting down etc the machine then the script could reside in /usr/local/bin. Re: [i3]Not able to get the reboot/suspend script work.
$HOME/.bashrc is executed when you log into X. Then its contents are sourced once agiain in your .xsessionrc. A double invocation seems a trifle inelegant. # set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists if [ -d $HOME/bin ] ; then PATH=$HOME/bin:$PATH fi PATH=$PATH:$HOME/.rvm/bin # Add RVM to PATH for scripting It's possible you may want different paths on the console and in X. It's also possible that portions of your customised .profile relate only to things relevant to the console and which are not needed or wanted in X. And then I used ~/.xsesionrc to source ~/.profile. Here are the contents of .xsessionrc: #! /bin/sh if [ -f $HOME/.profile ]; then . $HOME/.profile fi Four lines. Compare with the single line export PATH=$HOME/bin:$PATH in ~/.xsessionrc. The configuration is aimed exactly at the target. It gives you what you want without having to reuse an existing file which has a different purpose. And, if we read /etc/X11/Xsession.d/40x11-common_xsessionrc we see #Source user defined xsessionrc (locales and other environment variables) Is your entry a locale or an environment variable? My entry is an environment variable. So you suggest that I should use .xsessionrc to export my $PATH by not my .profile? Re: [i3]Not able to get the reboot/suspend script work.
Solution No. 1: Source ~/.profile in ~/.xsessionrc. Solution No. 2: Put 'export PATH=$HOME/bin:$PATH' in ~/.xsessionrc. The first solution gives a path including ~/bin. It also reloads an already loaded file, which is a waste of time, and loads other things which may or not be wanted. It achieves its ends with a scattergun approach. It works but that is about all which can said of it. The second solution also gives a path including ~/bin but its technique is surgical. It does exactly one thing and does it well. There are no side effects and the outcome is completely predictable. What you choose is up to you. I got you, just one last question, Should I modify my .profile? You need an active ConsoleKit session (if you run stable) or a logind session (if you run unstable). Apparently this is not the case Assuming you run unstable, do you have libpam-systemd installed? Re: Unable to start nm-applet
I just took a moment to read your 2nd initial post. The errors you get when starting it as root are probably because the default configuration is to not accept ( via policy kit I guess ) using this applet as root. VLC have the same kind of restrictions. The question is, why when you start it a Humpf... sorry for the truncated mail... I just hit the tab key just before space, and it send the mail... The same thing happened to me and hence I had to send the second mail. I just hope that other guys are getting to read the second mail. so: The question is, why when you start it as a normal user? The package depends on lot of things ( well...gnome's bloatwares often does... ) , if one of those is not started correctly, it might cause the error. We know that it's not dbus, but IIRC, gconf, keyring, notify, and other stuff like that are runnable softwares. Are they started correctly? I will just run ps aux | grep command to see if they are started correctly or not. Is there is any other better way to see if they are started correctly or not. neo1691@Innovator:~$ ps aux | grep gconf neo1691 5202 0.0 0.0 53144 2516 ?S20:26 0:00 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gconf/gconfd-2 neo1691@Innovator:~$ ps aux | grep keyring neo1691 6255 0.0 0.0 15296 1036 pts/1S+ 20:38 0:00 grep --color=auto keyring so keyring is not there, I remember I stopped the keyring service because it was bringing up the gnome-keyring warning whenever I used to run git commands. neo1691@Innovator:~$ ps aux | grep notify root33 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S20:19 0:00 [fsnotify_mark] neo1691 6323 0.0 0.0 15300 1032 pts/1S+ 20:39 0:00 grep --color=auto notify -- Regards, Anubhav Yadav Imperial College of Engineering and Research, Pune. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. That looks ok. I completely missed though that apparently nm-applet complains about a missing session id for uid=0. I hope you aren't trying to run it as root? Re: Unable to start nm-applet
Oh, apparently you use sudo to start nm-applet. You really shouldn't do that. All the D-Bus and GConf related error messages etc are because you are trying to start it as root from within a user session. I'd probably try with another desktop environment. Maybe it's actually an issue with i3 or more specifically i3bar not showing the notification icon of nm-applet. And yes xfce, and nm-applet is already there in the xfce4 panel. And then If I run nm-applet again in a terminal in xfce session, it adds another nm-applet there on the xfce panel. So I guess yes, something is wrong with i3 -- Regards, Anubhav Yadav Imperial College of Engineering and Research, Pune. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. How can I benchmark my brand new usb 3.0 WD My Passport hdd

Re: How can I benchmark my brand new usb 3.0 WD My Passport hdd
It's not exactly obvious what you're trying to achieve. You already bought the drive. Do you intend to return it if the tested speeds are not to your liking? Or maybe you just want to know what speeds to expect when doing real-life transfers? Then the best test is to actually time those transfers... Sorry for not being more clear before. I would like to know 1) If I am benchmarking the right way? 2) Is what I am getting is the standard speed? 3) If no then is this problem OS related or Device related? Some extra things I would like to point out about the hdd:- 1) It is partitioned to ntfs by default. 2) Its model no is WDBZFP0010BBK -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
