For debian-boot stuff, you can get PO files from http://people.debian.org/~barbier/d-i/l10n/ and submit bugreports to have them committed. These pages are updated from time to time because cronjobs on gluck are also disabled. Denis

The postgresql-7.3.4.tar.gz archive contains several po directories: postgresql-7.3.4/src/backend/po/ postgresql-7.3.4/src/bin/pg_controldata/po/ postgresql-7.3.4/src/bin/pg_dump/po/ postgresql-7.3.4/src/bin/pg_resetxlog/po/ postgresql-7.3.4/src/bin/psql/po/ postgresql-7.3.4/src/interfaces/libpq/po/ I do not have a close look at these directories, but merging them all into a single one would surely help your translators. I fixed this, but the fix caused a much serious problem. For example, http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/rfa_bypackage.ja.html is written in EUC-JP encoding but the header says the page is ISO-2022-JP encoding. This causes the page entirely unreadable. (Just a row of random letters) Hmm, ok, can't check this You can try iconv -f iso-2022-jp -t utf-8 rfa_bypackage.ja.html /dev/null and see if it fails. Though I am not familiar with the build process of Debian web pages, I imagine Makefile has some problem and WMEPILOG is ignored. (WMEPILOG for Japanese converts pages from EUC-JP to ISO-2022-JP). I have no idea how to fix this. This analysis is correct. I'd like to revert my modification if there are no solution. I think there is one. Nothing should need to be done, since the 0x5C byte is the trail byte of the character, a proper MBCS aware string scanner will recognize that it is not a backslash character (unlike, for instance, in the please respect the ad policy string a bit further down, which *does* contain a backslash in the translation). Getting the string scanner to work properly requires configuring the locales properly. The problem with current WML is that streams are bytes and not characters, this is why 0x5C bytes have to be escaped. I am preparing a character oriented version, but there are major backward compatibility problems. It means that any single file must contain only one encoding, some files have to be fixed under webwml. Big5 is a bit problematic since it allows non-highbit characters as trail bytes, similar to the problems with ISO 2022-JP. A stateful string scanner is required to handle it properly. LibC should work fine as long as the proper locale is available, and I am pretty sure that the gettext utilities will handle this properly. Yes, gettext is safe. Instead of escaping some problematic characters, a better solution could be to perform encoding conversions (as with Japanese files) to a safe encoding. Is there anyone interested in testing this scheme? Denis

If you insert extra 0x5C bytes into the stream, the text will look very broken to a Big5 text editor. This is why I suggest to insert backslashes in MO files and not PO files. Those backslashes will be removed when processed through WML. It is also not possible to directly see which characters end in a 0x5C byte, so doing this is not feasible. The chinese/bin/fix_big5.pl has surely been written for this purpose. Chinese big5 encoding and PO files
Hi, there are trouble with big5 encoding in PO files, because some backslashes are not escaped (e.g. MailingLists/subscribe.wml cannot be processed). Maybe fix_big5.pl should be run against those PO files so that MO files contain escaped backslashes? But I am not sure that encoding is then still valid, could a Chinese translator investigate this issue? Denis

I prefer to modify doc/manuals.defs not to use multiple %s because it is not fatally needed. May I modify doc/manuals.defs ? Already done ;) Denis

Oh sorry, I misunderstood your point. For example, translate the link or the name of the program. Ok, this is why I insert a comment just above, which appears in PO files. IMO the right fix here is to implement the $ stuff in perl's %s so that we can use it like we can use it in C programs, but hey... There is an alternative, but I am afraid it will cause trouble, this is why I did not mention it before. In mp4h 1.3.0, there is a new printf tag which recognizes the $ stuff, so we could replace : printf ... $foo, $bar : by printf ... foo bar / But the problem is that %1 and %2 are special, they are replaced by macro attributes when it is expanded. So you cannot write define-tag fooprintf %2$s %1$s foo bar //define-tag because %1 and %2 are replaced as soon as foo is encountered, before printf is expanded. This is why I believe that multiple %s should really be avoided. Denis
