Low Bandwidth X (LBX) proxy server
Applications that would like to take advantage of the Low Bandwidth extension
to X (LBX) must make their connections to an lbxproxy. These applications
need know nothing about LBX, they simply connect to the lbxproxy as if were a
regular X server. The lbxproxy accepts client connections, multiplexes them
over a single connection to the X server, and performs various optimizations
on the X protocol to make it faster over low bandwidth and/or high latency
 connections.

(new) libdps1-dbg_4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge2_powerpc.deb extra libdevel
Display PostScript (DPS) client library (unstripped)
This package is useful to provide a backtrace with symbol names in a
debugger; this facilitates interpretation of core dumps, and aids in finding
logic errors in programs using this library (or the library itself). The
library is installed in /usr/X11R6/lib/debug and can be used by placing that
directory in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable when the code to
 be debugged is executed.
 .
Non-programmers will likely have little use for this package. See the

Display PostScript (DPS) client library
libdps provides client-side libraries for use with the Display Postscript

This package only provides the client-side interfaces to DPS. In order to
fully take advantage of it, DPS extension support is required in the X
server, for which there is currently no freely-licensed implementation.

libICE provides an interface to ICE, the Inter-Client Exchange protocol.
Motivated by issues arising from the need for X Window System clients to
share data with each other, the ICE protocol provides a generic framework for
building protocols on top of reliable, byte-stream transport connections. It
provides basic mechanisms for setting up and shutting down connections, for
performing authentication, for negotiating versions, and for reporting

PS2 Mouse, USB socket: any hope?

2006-10-09 Thread Dan Jacobson
The following message is a courtesy copy of an article
that has been posted to comp.os.linux.portable as well.

Kindly tell me if there is any hope for using my PS2 Trackman Marble+
mouse with a Thinkpad R50e, which only has USB sockets. I have
purchased a female PS2 to male USB connector. What do I put in
xorg.conf on Debian?

libICE provides an interface to ICE, the Inter-Client Exchange protocol.

Bug#391995: xkb-data: Please add quotes to us (alt-intl)

2006-10-09 Thread Jan Willem Stumpel
Package: xkb-data
Version: 0.8-18
Severity: wishlist

It would be nice to change in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/us : (section
"alt-intl"):

key  { [  9, parenleft,   dead_breve,dead_breve ] };
key  { [  0, parenright,  dead_abovering,dead_abovering ] };

to

key  { [  9,  parenleft, leftsinglequotemark,  dead_breve ]};
key  { [  0, parenright, rightsinglequotemark, dead_abovering ] };

(as used in section "intl").

Reason: in the present alt-intl version, both alt-9 and shift-alt-9
produce dead_breve. This a bit of a waste of key combinations.

The proposed modification leaves dead_breve and dead_abovering available
with shift-alt, but produces an easy way to type single-quotes by means of
alt. Single-quotes are very useful things to have on a system.

Regards, Jan

Ok, if there is a forward path, that makes it easier for me considering
it to be etch-ignore. I need to think about it.

I was planning to try and make 0.2 work with the metacity currently in
unstable, but I have no idea how difficult it is going to be.

As for backporting the fixes and releasing something pre-0.2 is not worth the
trouble in my opinion. I will also try and build an experimental version
against metacity 2.16 and see how much of a difference the theming support
really makes.

I was planning to use git-svnimport or git-svn to migrate the compiz history.
This should be rather easy because compiz is still very young.

It seems to me that enabling offscreen pixmaps on my 852GM/855GM chipset
doesn't make a difference, apart from X behaving slightly "different" when
starting up compiz. It seems like up until compiz starts rendering, the
windows are offset a little more than with offscreen pixmaps disabled.

After compiz has loaded, everything is working as normal again, and the
performance seems the same.

Yes, if we were to move -nv to non-free this would be my choice as well.

I'd like to tag this as etch-ignore if possible actually. I do believe it's
a problem for the reasons stated in the bug, but there's several obvious
issues with kicking it to non-free:

 1) Nvidia users are forced to use non-free, at which point there's no
superficial distinction between nv and nvidia-glx, even though we know
in reality that there is a major difference in how Free those drivers
are.

 2) We lose support for a major class of hardware out of the box that we
previously supported before.

Now, there is an option that I haven't explored yet, and that's that the
nouveau project[0] has begun cleaning up the nv driver a little bit by
deobfuscating the code as they go. This isn't complete yet, but it is being
done[1]. I could steal some of these patches and try to ship them in etch,
at which point the code will be partially deobfuscated. I have a strong
interest in shipping the nouveau driver if it's ready for etch+1 anyway, so
this bug will hopefully be resolved for the next release.

All this said, I do believe that the nv driver presents something that is
arguably non-free, and so the bug severity should remain as is. Given that
we want to give the GLX a pass for similar reasons (with similar efforts
for the future as well[2]) I think it's fairly reasonable to do the same
for nv. If we can't get this issue resolved for etch+1 though, we'll kick
it to non-free.

Sure, just create branches/experimental/app/ and copy compiz over from
trunk and plug away :-)

What's your alioth login? I'll add you, but I don't think we should do this
in git right now because we'd lose the history we already have for the
package.

I'm going to play with the script to convert from svn to git that
ships with git in a month or so when we're really frozen for etch. If
anyone wants to start tackling that now so we can do the conversion for the
whole svn repo quickly when we're ready, that'd kick ass.

Is the diff between what we have and 0.2 that big? Could we just backport
the interesting fixes that don't break this instead?

3. move -video-nv to non-free, and remove the dependency from -video-all
(maybe add a Suggests instead). This looks to me like the most
practical way to give users an upgrade path from the monolith (for users
of non-nvidia hardware, at least). If this is chosen, something should
probably be added to the release notes to warn nv users.

how to continue with xserver-xorg-video-nv?

2006-10-09 Thread Andreas Barth
[Please Cc me on replies, I'm not subscribed]

Hi,

what is the plan to continue with this package? AFAICS, there are two
options:

1. The maintainers are happy enough with this code, and think that it
qualifies the DFSG. In this case, the bug report should be
closed/downgraded.
2. We move xserver-xorg-video-nv to non-free, and xserver-xorg-video-all
to contrib (the source for a contrib package can still be in main).

IMHO, this is your call. What do you decide?

Cheers,

Bug#391895: xserver-xorg: incorrect display after X starts up (not always reproducible)

2006-10-09 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.1.0-3
Severity: minor

(Not sure about the package, please reassign the bug to the right one.)

Sometimes, just after I start X (with startx), the display is
incorrect:
  * Some icons have wrong colors (e.g. black instead of white).
  * Most text is not visible in my xterm's, in particular all the text
with a black background (which is the background of my xterm's).
Yellow text with a red background appeared as black text with a
red background. (I suppose that all text appeared in black and
only the background of the characters was OK, but I haven't tested
more deeply.)
However, the background image was OK.

The screenshot done with "import -window root" was correct (i.e. with
the right colors).

As this problem is not always reproducible, the solution is to restart X.

I've attached the corresponding log file. The log file when the display
is correct is the same, except that there isn't the last line

  FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1;
fixing.

but I've tested only once and I don't know if this related.

OK, this says:

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

Is there any reason why this isn't written to /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

XSF: xserver-xorg-video-mga 1.4.1 is incompatible with AIGLX (even for
direct rendering), we need 1.4.2.

X Strike Force X.Org X11 SVN commit: r3688 - trunk/app/compiz/debian

2006-10-09 Thread X Strike Force SVN Repository Admin
Author: beatle
Date: 2006-10-09 04:18:26 -0400 (Mon, 09 Oct 2006)
New Revision: 3688

Modified:
   trunk/app/compiz/debian/changelog
   trunk/app/compiz/debian/compiz.wrapper
Log:
Add code to the compiz wrapper to detect a running NVIDIA GLX implementation
and don't use the --indirect-rendering flag in that case, because NVIDIA have
their own indirect rendering infrastructure.

Didn't check thoroughly enough, it does require some kind of NPOT
texture support.

So while this does look like a genuine bug in AIGLX, fixing it wouldn't
make any difference with compiz. Thus I'm reassigning (for real this
time ;) this to libgl1-mesa-dri (it definitely doesn't have anything to
do with the 2D driver).

So far nothing unusual it seems.

No way at all to access the box anymore? You cannot SSH in for example?

You could try and take a look at the Xorg.0.log.old after the reboot, maybe
post it here. Not sure that it will be helpful though.

It probably can. While it's certainly not the optimal solution, I guess it's
a good compromise for etch.

compiz could always be built without metacity theme support, couldn't
it?
