Subject: [Declude.JunkMail] why have spam scores jumped?

Hi,

I don't know if anyone is still here but I'd like some insights into some
strange anti-spam behavior.

We have latest SmarterMail and Declude, as well as Sniffer. Over the last few
days I noticed a significant drop in email messages. Upon further
investigation, I found that messages were being givn much higher spam scores
than in the past, with the result that they get classified as spam or just
outright deleted. Checking the headers, however, I don't see why the scores
are coming in so high. Below are a few examples. Does anyone see why the spam
scores come out so high?

Thanks,

Ben

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Time to upgrade and to what?

2012-01-26 Thread Michael Graveen
I would go with 2008 R2 Standard (it's 64bit only). That way you can go past
4GB of RAM if you'd like (up to 32GB). Your server's processor will need to
support a 64bit OS to use it. I don't know if there are issues running SM on a
desktop OS like Win 7 Pro.

Hope this helps.

Mike

Last June I posted a question and got some great replies. Being preoccupied
with work that actually pays me money, I haven't done anything yet, but the
time is getting close. My question now is: what OS?

Our old Imail 2006 runs on Win Server 2000. Would SmarterMail run on Win 7 Pro?
Would it run on a 64-bit version and would there be any point in using the
64-bit version? I ask because I've actually got a spare system sitting around
with just that and it has 4 GB of RAM. I'd like to take advantage of all that
ram.

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Hey Ben -

If you haven't already, you can download a trial of SmarterMail to give you a
hands on feel for how the interface works, from the system administrator to a
domain administrator to an end user. I can't speak to the latest version of
SmarterMail as we are still running 6.9xx (we have a current subscription but
never felt the need yet to upgrade - probably will soon), nor can I offer a
good comparison, since we were still on IMail 8.2x when we made the change.
There were three main reasons we made the switch: cost, a much improved web
interface from our IMail 8.2x version, and the massive number of positive
recommendations about switching to SM. Like the others, we have never looked
back. We too were on the unlimited version of IMail, but are on a 1000 user
version of SmarterMail. That has proved plenty for us at this point. The nice
thing is, if we need more then we add them on.

We are heavy users of the Mailing Lists in SmarterMail. I like the fact that
we can manage subscribers separate from lists. Our main domain (the one that I
am on) currently has almost 70 mailing lists. It's great that, via the web
interface, we can add a single subscriber to multiple lists. We can also go
into the individual lists and manage subscribers as well. You can add your own
custom fields to the subscriber screens if you want to track Name, City,
Company Name, etc. It also has the ability to remove a user from the lists if
they have a certain number of bounces. While that feature was nice, we
actually increased it (maybe even turned it off - can't remember for sure
without going and looking) because it would remove someone and nobody ever knew
about it. There were requests about maybe alerting the administrator of such a
change, or disabling a user versus removing them, etc. I'm just not sure
whether that part has been upgraded. Again, we are on SmarterMail 6.9 but I
don't think the rest of it has changed that much.

The one thing that I didn't like about the mailing lists is that we had an ASP
page with all of the options that people could subscribe to. At the end, when
they hit submit, it would fire off an email to IMail and subscribe (or
unsubscribe) them from all of their choices in one swoop. SmarterMail didn't
handle things that way, and would simply make the change for the first option
but ignore the rest of them. We weren't aware of that at first and had people
think they were making changes but they really weren't. SmarterMail does offer
the ability to tie web pages to the mail server using SOAP, etc. But I don't
know it and haven't had the time to make the changeover.

I guess my three areas on concern would be how IM and SM compare in their web
mail interface, how they compare in administration, and how they compare in
list server. We make pretty modest use of the IM list server (which is pretty
primitive), but I would hate to give it up altogether.

Thanks for any comments,

Ben

We dumped Imail after being with them since version 4 I think.
Moved to Smartermail and never looked back.

Our customers really like SM and we have nothing but positive feedback.

the transition was easy with the migration tools from SM.

I would do it again with no hesitation.

I am starting to have some serious performance issues since I upgraded to SM
8.2. Although I can not be for sure that is it due to the upgrade as usage
has also increased with added clients and the start of school. The big
issue is that the web interface becomes unresponsive for up to about 5
minutes. The machine has 2 Gig of RAM, and a swap file of 5.5 Gig. In
Windows task manager I see my peak memory usage is now 10 gig.

Right now I am not sure if the performance issues are being caused by RAM,
too much traffic, Smartermail, or Declude.

I went to SmarterMail 4.x a few years ago (from IMail 8.05). I like the web
interface. Is it perfect? No. But for the most part the Smarttools folks are
pretty responsive with bug fixes (especially compared to Ipswitch's past
performance). Version 6 has just been released and I will probably upgrade to
that. Hope this helps.

Sorry William I did not catch your sarcasm. I don't see those problems with
Imail and we have people with 1000s of messages in their inbox but that is
version 8.22, I know they had a lot of web mail problems with later versions..
I think roundcube is better than squirrel mail but I don't know if it will work

I gave up w/Imail on fixing my imail webmail issues, on my servers, if there is
more than 1000 messages in a mail box, users get "Access Denied" when going to

If they have less then 500 messages it works fine for them..

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] BackScatter

2009-05-18 Thread Michael Graveen
Hi Brian,
Thanks for the explanation.

Mike

Hi Mike, I can help with this.

Greylisting it tremendously effective however it can cause a lot of problems if
it is not done selectively. We worked closely with Matt Bramble and a few other
Declude "power users" to develop ways to apply greylisting only when it is most
likely to be beneficial. Blanket greylisting is dangerous in that not
everything plays well with greylisting. Also, you'll always have those users
who are expecting an immediate email from someone, and greylisting is going to
delay it if they have not successfully passed greylisting before.

Rather than greylisting everyone (which you can do If you want), what we did is
to allow you to specify a number of criteria that will trigger greylisting. In
these cases, greylisting is not triggered until something suspicious is
encountered. Because Interceptor/Alligate is designed from the ground up to
examine every aspect of the SMTP conversation, there are several points in the
transaction where greylisting can be invoked. These include the senders
reputation based on our MXRate rating, the originating country, volume, recent
history, suspicious HELOs, blacklist hits, and several other items.

This provides a much more effective way to employ greylisting without
inconveniencing most users or senders. In fact, most end users never realize
greylisting is being used. The idea here is to determine if something is
probably spam, and if we have reason to believe that it may be, then impose a
greylist check. You do not have to educate your users this way, and you will
have far less complaints.

Hope this helps.

Brian

Hi Todd,

Alligate has way better greylisting capabilities than SmarterMail. SmarterMails
implementation is somewhat dangerous. You need to be able to accurately qualify
which messages should be greylisted. Alligate is the only greylisting
implementation that does this. I don't believe you would have this problem if

not prevent you getting on blacklists.

If you are on a blacklist then I think you need to figure out how your smtp

Since using Alligate (www.alligate.com) as the first line of defence in front

Hi Everyone -

We've been having a few issues with mail servers refusing our mail. Today I
ran a test on DNSStuff and found that our IP is on BackScatter.org. They are
referencing an event on 4/27, and supposedly we will be removed after 4 weeks
if they haven't had any other issues. Of course we can pay to have it removed
sooner. I'm not sure if being listed in their DB is the main culprit to the
server refusals that I've seen?

We switched over to SmarterMail in mid-April. Since 4/27, we have implemented
grey listing.

Is grey listing a good first line of defense? Is there anything else I should
be doing to prevent back scatter?

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

I use SmarterMail (www.smartertools.com) and like it a lot. SmarterTools has
conversion tools to help you migrate your IMail domains to SmarterMail.

Hope this helps.

Mike

I am going to move from Imail soon.
Does any one have any recommendations on reasonable Mail Server software.
we need maybe 200 users, and we just pop our mail now.
I have been using Workgroup Share to add calendar sharing etc to our current
config.
Has any one used their Mail Server software and what do you think of it?
and will my junkmail still work with it?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Michael,

I am sorry to hear you are having a struggle, but I am running mine on HP

reboot my server for over 18 months now.

Is your server a dedicated mail server or do you run anything else on it?

Michael,

Judging by that screen cap you are having a rough time to say the least.

I am sure you have exhausted a ton of options, but have you turned off
DEP for Declude? I have seen repeated crashes like that on a system
which did not exclude Declude under DEP.

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Migrating from Imail to SmarterMail

2007-03-11 Thread Michael Graveen
I did the migration from IMail 8.05 to SmarterMail 4 and it was
pretty painless. One thing to watch out for is that if you take your
root accounts over from IMail, change your passwords on those
accounts right away! The default root account password is widely
known and even if you disable the account SmarterMail will still
accept mail through the system. I would also add root to the "SMTP
Blocked Senders" list in the admin console to keep this from happening.

Good luck with your migration,

Mike

Exactly where was the file?

Since Howard is running IMail 8.15 this means that his server has
been compromised ala the SMTP vulnerability that is fixed only in
8.22 (patched) and 9.1. So, it is not a virus that would be found by
F-prot or Symantec, but a server hijack or comprise.

I called Howard on this, but for everyone else's info, if you are
seeing this, look for ssm.exe to be a running process. I found this
on an Imail server that I administer for another company this
morning. The file was showing processing time in the task manager
and showed up on the Services list at Security Systems Manager, but
the file had a modified date of 2/5/07 and no updated had been done
on that server for over a week. Stopping this service stopped the
junk messages from going out.

Neither F-prot or Symantec showed this file as a virus; however I
did submit it to Symantec for analysis.

Q:  When will we expect to
see v. 3?

A:  The release date depends
on the results of final QA.  The product is essentially done, just
making sure that all the bugs are out of it.  Since mail servers are
so critical to people's infrastructure, we work extremely hard to make a
stable release with no issues that are going to bite you.  We don't
sacrifice stability for a quick release.

Assuming everything is in good
order (which to this point it appears to be), release will be middle of
January.

thing about it is I'm finding lots of e-mail in the spool directory that
are clearly spam and will probably be identified as spam if it ever

[Declude.JunkMail] E-mails getting routed to the SPAM email address that shouldn't

2005-09-10 Thread Michael Graveen
I've just upgraded my Declude Junkmail to version 2.06.16. I'm running
into a issue where some emails that DON'T meet the ROUTETO weight are still
being routed to my SPAM email address.

These are my settings:
WEIGHT10WARN
WEIGHT14SUBJECT **SPAM**
WEIGHT20ROUTETO [EMAIL PROTECTED]
WEIGHT25DELETE

Here is the Declude log for the email:
09/10/2005 17:23:54 Q5CF509920108E431 Tests failed [weight=7]:
CATCHALLMAILS=IGNORE[0] NOLEGITCONTENT=IGNORE[0] SPAMCOP=WARN[7]
SPAMHEADERS=WARN[3]

09/10/2005 17:23:54 Q5CF509920108E431 L1 Message OK
09/10/2005 17:23:54 Q5CF509920108E431 Action(s) taken for
[EMAIL PROTECTED] = IGNORE WARN [LAST ACTION=WARN]
09/10/2005 17:23:54 Q5CF509920108E431 Cumulative action(s) taken on this
email = IGNORE WARN [LAST ACTION=WARN]

According to the log, the email should have been delivered, but I found it
in [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm assuming I should never see an email delivered to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], by Declude, that doesn't have a weight between 20 and
24. Is there anything else I should be looking for?

Thanks,

Mike

So, we've been looking quite a bit at SmarterMail for the past few months
... everyone in here seems to rant and rave about it, wishing they had
switched sooner. However, when I really dig into it, it seems like it's
missing a lot of common functionality. Here's a couple examples that I
confirmed with their tech support:

- There's no way to have an alias launch an EXE (or do anything but go to
another email address)
- There's no global filters, and no way to create filters automatically
with web services. Editing the XML directly would require a service
restart. So it'd need to be entirely manual, or find a way to hook their
DLLs I guess.
- No way to change the connection banner for IMAP (or smtp or pop3)
- No way to create an address or alias that would allow a user to
unsubscribe the mailing list by just sending a message there, it *needs*
to have "unsubscribe" in the subject. I assume this could somehow be
rigged with some title-rewriting content filter .. ick.

I've seen a few other things that concern me .. some of this stuff is on
the list, or has been put on the list for the next release, but they're
shooting for December. So, I guess we should realistically assume 2006.

Any thoughts?
Jonathan
I think SmarterMail has a very nice interface for the end user, but it is
lacking some features on the admin side. The vendor does seem to listen to
feature requests and bug reports. When I last spoke to the SmaterTool
folks, they said version 3 of SmarterMail would be released sometime in
August, 2005. I hope we don't have to wait until December.

You're correct, that's what it does. But like Scott said, you have to be
running something newer that version 1.75 in order to use that feature.

That's an option that was added after 1.75 was released. You can simply

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] OT - Copying 200,000 plus files

2004-10-20 Thread Michael Graveen
I think the question was about zipping graphic files, which as a general
rule, don't get much smaller after they're zipped (as compared to text
files, etc.). I wasn't taking about the compression contained in a
particular graphic format. I get about 15%-25% reduction zipping the
"uncompressed" BMP file vs about 70% from a Word doc (using the stock
Winzip settings). I should have been clearer in my first response.

Mike
At 06:43 PM 10/20/2004, you wrote:
Huh? The logic flaw in trying to zip first, then copy aside (since the file
would have to first be copied into RAM, then zipped, then stored back onto
the USB drive...better just to copy)... uncompressed TIFFs (TIFFs have had
an option for LZW compression since the mid 90s) compress pretty well as
they contain raw raster data, as do BMPs and many other uncompressed
formats.
If you're referring to JPEGs and GIFs, that's because they are already
compressed. JPEGs have built-in lossy compression, but high quality JPEGs
(low compression) can still see decent compression, and GIFs are already LZW
compressed, which means more LZW compression generally doesn't yield much.
So, it depends on the type of image, but TIFFs are generally uncompressed
these days due to the LZW copyright fiasco, or may have run-length encoding
which still compresses reasonably well with LZW.
Darin.

Hi Michael

EASYNET-DYNA is the blacklist of dynablock.easynet.nl see:
http://www.declude.com/Junkmail/support/ip4r.htm .
Use WHITELIST AUTH in your GLOBAL.CFG file if you have Imail V8.X and
declude V1.75 so authenticated users will be whitelisted or do not check
outgoing emails.
Cheers

Adrian

[Declude.JunkMail] What is this test?

2003-10-16 Thread Michael Graveen
I have a client that has a domain that we host. They sent an email through
the mail server and it failed the following tests:

X-Spam-Tests-Failed: EASYNET-DYNA, IPNOTINMX [3]

My question is, what is EASYNET-DYNA? I don't see it in the JunkMail manual.

Thanks,

Mike

Is it OK just to comment out the entries for now with a "#"?

Absolutely.

Legit E-mail failing their tests and slowdowns in processing E-mail.
The word is that they are blacklisting the world...if you can reach their
servers.

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] SPAM being sent to personal account after upgrade to Imail 8after upgrade to Imail 8

2003-06-07 Thread Michael Graveen
Thanks. I had only disabled DNS Backlist logging at the root. I forgot to
go into each domain and disable the antispam features. I disable these and
see what happens.

Before you figure out how things interact I strongly suggest you deactivate
the SPAM filtering in IMail.
First make sure all is as you were before then experiment with the spam
filtering that comes active with the upgrade.
Simply go the Antispam folder, uncheck all the options, specially in the 2nd
and 3rd tab.

Subject: [Declude.JunkMail] SPAM being sent to personal account after
upgrade to Imail 8
Hello,
I just upgraded to IMail, version 8. I also run declude junkmail. Mail
that fails certain SPAM tests I have routed to a SPAM account. After the
upgrade to IMail 8, SPAM originally destined for other accounts on our
server, that were caught and sent to the SPAM account, are being sent to my
personal account. They should be getting routed to the SPAM account. I'm
not sure what's going on because some mail still goes to the SPAM
account. Has anyone else experienced this? Any insight on this would be
appreciated.
