This banner is perfect in my eyes:

It is distinct from our branding (still don't know if can't create
design following our branding, but showing clearly that the artwork

(even in the dark theme) the clear, friendly and open language of our
branding.
It contains elements dedicated to this special action item.
Even on the dark theme the main tone is a lighter grey.
The very distinct font in the middle part contrasts very well with the
bold characters of the upper and lower part.

Several people already posted their positive opinion on this proposal,
so I ask all of you to vote by "+1" or "-1" if you want to present this
vertical banner as part of the (still to be created) "official
design/marketing material repository".

My vote is: +1


+1 for the design

but I think that the text "Help us fund the foundation!" is a little bit 
out of time for this banner. We have 96% of the money needed for the 
Stiftung itself.
Maybe we write: "Help us encourage the foundation" or "Help us boost the 
foundation".
Or something which shows the people outside that the foundation now 
needs money to do the work to stay with/against the others.

branding design for all areas of visual LibreOffice representation.

With such a design we can approach the design teams of the

a broader adaption of the "official" design in future.

Should we include this idea in the What-we-need page or is it not
realistic at all?


We will see a little bit later if it is necessary.

Or is the DVD an external DVD? Then the logo is right. [2]

Some additional notes:
   * Please consider that this is a list which is based on individual
 thoughts ... so although I already perceive it to be quite
 mature, there is nothing "legally binding" at the moment. Quite
 the contrary, each of the items is meant to be a starting point
 to find a "works great" solution for our team.
   * I some cases, I found it very hard to cluster the issues - I did
 my best, believe me :-) Finally, it was much more important to
 list each item at all, instead of doing too much refinement what
 category it might belong to.


Finally, it would be great if you could do a "quick check" if one of the
items might be something for you - we'll need some people taking care of
the issues. This is your chance to poke others for results ;-) To be
honest, it means that you care about the progress ... you're not the
only one working on it. So pre-pick something interesting for you! :-)

3.4.0 is very near to the beta and nightly builds.


Comment for website usability of the a-o-m:
If we do such a a-o-m we should think of easy and fast changing of the 
version text after getting up a new version. There should be only 
one/two click(s) or little textual changes.
Will we have many pictures in the background which are enabled when 
necessary or will we have a changing text which the websities with 
publisher rights can change easily?


The version will change nearly every month [1] or even quicklier.

We had for long time the bug on the website that there was only a 
screenshot with "Beta" on the main page although we have had a stable 
version because no one made a new screenshot.

I'm working on a web banner type graphic [1] - not really a logo - would
you want that in the list there


I think we should have only one wiki page for all graphics for the 
conference(s).

So change the page (and the name of the page) as you think it is necessary.
And - of course - put your banners on this page.

Looks very nice, especially 3a.

For me the text in 3a is better sorted and have better eye-catchers than 
in 2a.


Another idea for your prototypes:
Can you make the 3a without the green frame as 4a?

We do have a "Conference Kit" wiki page[1] where we are trying to
collect all items needed for a conference as well as a catalogue (links)
of previously created LibreOffice materials. I will be going over it
over the next couple of weeks and updating it.

in "Paris" with the Eiffel tower. In our greens.

I took your logo (because I like it) and added the Motif and changed 
some little things like "Paris" from green to grey.

   * "Highly stable, for corporate use"
   * "Newest Features, for early adopters"

So, the users may decide - but don't need to. And the decision to go for
(e.g.) stability is directly tied to a certain version - no additional
lookups.


We should force this thread for now. The version 3.4.0 will be ready 
early in time. And the website team decides wether they want to have one 
download page or two. So it can be important for them to have such a 
adapt-o-meter for their decision.

I like the idea of the icon on the top-left with the "puzzle pieces
logo". The colour should change though, it is too pale and difficult to
see. Maybe pick a colour that is not already used by the other
LibreOffice modules and from the LibreOffice colour set?[1]


Christoph proposed a yellow when he talked about the puzzle piece.
I fought with the brandings [1] and I didn't found a good colour.

Maybe someone can tell me which colour we should try.

Windows), I still would not like to see the English docs team and
website team taking its screenshots purely under Linux/Unix. What
about the Macintosh platform? I'd certainly like to encourage more
involvement from Mac users.


Did someone know if it won't be the same problem with Mac as it is with MS?

Origami, from which it is inspired).
If printed on 100% recycled paper (as intended) it would show our
commitment to sustainability. More than traditional PVC cases at least.
Above all else, it is actually just very nice to hold. Many people I
gave it to said it reminded them of old 5.25inch floppy disks from "back
in the day".

This might be more of an idea that sits well with us tree-hugging
student-types, but I just thought it might be worth sharing.
If you guys think it's worth exploring, I can upload the template so you
can print one and fold it for yourself.
It really has to be held to be appreciated I think.


There is a big mistake on it:

- no links to a svg or png to get it as soon as possible. ;-)

And maybe a little:
We need a version number because we have two versions of LibO on DVD (at 
least the Germans have two DVDs.)





And it may be the best existing indication of how I imagine our
"branding language" could look and feel.
Simple, clean, honest, pure and vibrant.


I think we can also take it as basis for cover design of our 
documentation. If you have some thoughts about that? Then we need a 
title on it.

I think I prefer 1B because the fading-in effect suggest
"extending/expanding" something more?

I won't put the Math icon on the top. Our top modules are Writer and

Autumn 3 (and 4):
The text is hardly readable for me because of the motif in the back.
I won't put the two grey icons math and normal side by side. Maybe test 
the following order: Base, Math, Draw, Normal, Writer, Calc, Impress or so.

I don't think that it is meant so by Nik. For me it is only a proposal 
with some examples. The lists must be filled in.

I would propose we;

* Separate out items that are "ACTIVE", "ON-HOLD" and "COMPLETED"
into three separate tables so that people interested in doing
things only have to check the top table.
* Keep the items in the tables short so that our members can more
easily see what needs attention right now and what is going on
that they would be interested in. Colour coding will help. More
detailed information should just be linked to.
* We need to have deadlines, whether we meet them or not (because we
are all volunteers). Otherwise everything will end up as an
incomplete task that lasts forever.
* We need to have a client and a representative who speaks on their
behalf. That will give us a point of reference rather than having
endless internal communication.
* We need to be organised and update this ourselves and move
finished jobs out, or move jobs that are on-hold into that table.
They shouldn't just stay in the active table.


and most drastically;

* *We should LIMIT the number of active tasks to just 3-4.* Anything
else should not be added until something can be taken off and
moved to the completed table. With fewer tasks, we can focus more,
we can track them better, we can push them out faster, we can
unify our fragmented efforts and we can be held accountable when
we don't get things done, because it will show.


What do you think?


Good idea.

Some first thoughts/questions about it:
- Who will determine the priorities?  I think mostly our lead(s). This 
should be noticed so we won't get some ugly discussion (as on the 
website/wiki).

- Who will determine where to put an item (active - on-hold)?
- As I understand your proposal, the items will be more different than 
the work-item-list [1]. Will you/we make a list to collect the different 
items before 1st of november?
- The status "On hold" won't be necessary because then it will be in the 
"ON-HOLD" list
- The status "Being finalised" won't be necessary because then it will 
be in the "completed archive" list or you must have a coloumn "Status" 
in this list, too.
- What is the difference between "In proposal" an "In progress"? Maybe 
this should be described.
- What will happen, if someone tells that he wants to work on a 
"ON-HOLD" item, but the list of active items is 'full' and the others 
don't think it is extremly neceassary to work on it? We won't prevent 
him to work on it. Example: Aleksander made some (great) design 
proposals "out of time".

- Maybe this example can be a extra list: "GENERAL items" with no priority.
- I'm not sure if we shouldn't colour the "On-HOLD" list, too

[libreoffice-design] [UX] Content for a Paper case for the LibOx

maybe you have noticed that some times ago Nik showed a fine proposal 
for a LibOx-paper case [1] [2].

He also wrote:
"I haven't put real content in my Design because I wanted to give 
Marketing and UX a chance to work out what they think would be best, 
that and localisation issues."


Daniel Steyer and me are working on this subject. We made the 
instructions as odt and pdf in Englisch and German.


Nik mentioned two passages (each max. 10 lines) with content: 
"Installation" (about 480 characters) and "Feature" (about 600 characters).

And now we need this content. Maybe we can also put other information on it.

Do you have any decisions or proposals?

* where you use the "flat"/"non-modern" logo, the word Office still

At some point we should decide for two or three official banners (a
light one, a dark one, maybe something in between). And also, it might
be handy if you did one of the smaller versions (150*150/250*250)
earlier, I guess, these will be more needed (although I don't exactly
know).


When I find time in near future I will do some.


I saw that you made the (R) in our logo optional in your SVG, I guess
we shouldn't use that (our Branding page in the wiki at least doesn't
mention anything about this). It'd be great though, if we had more
insight here. Maybe Charles can help?


I took the svg [1]. There is a Trademark. The pngs have none. So I made 
it optional.

We should work on the Brandings for that.

I think it is a job like a facility manager/consierge or - if this 
sounds a little bit better - a mentor.
The lead should have a look on the different work that come up on one of 
the two parts of the design team (vi (visual identity) and ux (user 
experience)), sometimes coordinate it a bit, give some advices.

We have two parts so we need at least 2 people.


Il would allow them to share the pressure, the decisions, the knowledge,
and also one can take some rest without disturbing the project.


Our design leads (Bernhard and Christoph) were not like chairmans. They 
don't make the decisions, they "only" start the votings and discussions 
if no one else do this. Of course they have had a look at our branding 
and other advices. They are one of the go-to persons if someone out of 
the design team has a question. Sometimes they turn the team's attention 
to a work, which we get out of sight, by asking one/two per PM or the 
whole team by ml.



Currently, I hope to be much more helpful by working on the pile of
issues assigned to me, helping on the ux-advise list ... and looking at
some of the open discussions of the past weeks. For example, it would be
nice to know how to continue with smaller and general (seriously
developed) UI improvements people ask for regularly.


This is IMHO the main part a ux design leader has to do.

Some other part is what Astron made in the last time.

Wonderful! I've had ~1 big complaint about it, namely that the Victory
Column is higher than the 1px grey separator line (which seems like it
should be the thing in the logo).


Thanks for checking. That isn't a big problem. I have changed it and now 
it is on the same altitude.

But there was a more awful mistake in it I changed for now.


Thus, I've used your and Nik's great work as a basis... here is my proposal:

PS: I noticed that [for the victory column] you overlaid some green
elements with white circles to make it look like a quarter-circle was
cut off a rectangle. The better way to go about this, is to to convert
both the circle and the rectangle to paths (Path>  Object to Path) and
then use the function Path>  Difference to cut off the quarter-circle
from the rectangle.

Changed it and found by the way the awful mistake.

item necessary?

LibreOffice's SVG code can't yet display the modern SVG logo right. It

We have a big, big mistake with our Splash screen [4]:
It don't follow our own branding [1] and guidelines because the 
"LibreOffice" without TDF isn't in one line with the logo. Andrea's will 
do [5].


It is even not the same logo as it is in the Start Center and the About 
dialog [6].


I don't think that we should do so (even kick off our own branding).
So I vote for changing it for the final release of 3.6.0 and using the 
same logo every time a LibO-logo is there.

I have icons (not text) on 3.6.0.2 (RC2) on WIN864bit, Tango theme. So 
have a try with this and then tell us if it isn't correct.


But in general: I don't think that it is the right way to bash the 
design team. We are all volunteers here and spend our free time for this 
product to get better. We are working on many stuff and many stuff is 
getting in the 3.6. And sometimes things will happen a little bit later. 
But if they are worth to happen they will happen.

So work with us but don't bash.

[libreoffice-design] Where does the design-team go?

Hi all,
seems to be a very aggressive title?
My personal impressions are that the design team is loosing the sight 
for graphical elements, and only works on user experience.

Let me tell what happened the last weeks:
1. Taking *all* VI from whiteboard list to playground list.
2. Talking about, that it isn't the design team's job for working on 
T-Shirts or other marketing material
3. Taking off all Playground lists. Where is the discussion to do this? 
So there is no way to find any work for visual identity.

4. There were no dialogs about buttons, banners, conference material etc.

I know that some of you aren't work on VI but there is a huge call for 
banners, web buttons etc. Especially for 4.0. And that isn't the 
marketing team's job.
It seems that I'm the only one working for this and this isn't good 
because I haven't the skills to do such things for 4.0.


When we do a review we should do a view too:
I have a simple problem with the whole design working process. The focus 
of all who worked here for the last year was only on [UX]. We have no 
[VI] in work. We don't give the marketing what they urgently need [2]. 
We as Design team didn't work on any stuff for the next Conference.


Look and compare the Whiteboards and the Playgrounds to get a feeling 
about it. Marketing material is in Playground, no working point in 
Whiteboard.


Maybe my words are a bit hard. I thought about all of it the last weeks.
Then two questions appear to me and I gave them a name:

1 Nik as a great designer for the stuff here who was away for a longer 
time comes along and asks this question:
Nik's question: "What stuff can I do for you now to get a really good 
movement in your design? Only one because I have no time to work on many 
things." What would we say?


2 Bernhard had the experience to get the stuff in a well-structured 
order, so the people can find and work with it easily.
Bernhard's question: "Where can I find the material to work on next?" 
Let's have a look: "Wiki - Design - ? Aaah Whiteboard, but there is only 
UX and no graphical design. So they need no graphical design?"


Let's do our next work with these two questions.

The marketing team starts a discussion about their strategy [3] and of 
course there are some critics even the design team is concerned [4]. Do 
we get them? Do we work on it? If we don't do this the others made it 
for themselves without us.


And we should do this too: Defining a strategy for design [VI] and [UX].

I don't think that the voting about the new design in 3.6 happened in a 
really good way no matter what happened with the announcement.
We should not vote by Google+ or even by IRC. Especially not for the 
design which concerns to our presentation. Google+ can show us some 
direction, and IRC is not my/our tool for community and communication (I 
e.g. am not able to join these IRCs). There was no official discussion 
about the proposals here on the ml (or I missed it). And lack of time 
isn't an excuse for it.
We need a time plan for such work. So I hope we can do it for 4 in a 
better way. Maybe we need a release plan.

order, so the people can find and work with it easily.
Bernhard's question: "Where can I find the material to work on
next?" Let's have a look: "Wiki - Design - ? Aaah Whiteboard, but
there is only UX and no graphical design. So they need no graphical
design?"

Let's do our next work with these two questions.

The marketing team starts a discussion about their strategy [3] and
of course there are some critics even the design team is concerned
[4]. Do we get them? Do we work on it? If we don't do this the
others made it for themselves with

I don't think that this is a good decision in spirit of community.
Even not about a new branding of our programme.
I'm e.g. not able to follow the IRC chat so you expel me (and maybe some 
more) from this decision.


A decision by voting of community, by BoD (our officials) or by the 
members of TDF will be ok.

It's not required, but it is a factor in our decisions. That's why it's
listed under "Scope".


Should we put a persona to "scope" too? Because it is a new feature for 
4.0 and we should show the new branding with a persona.
