[Bug 1544471] Re: Install failure: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.PackageKit.service', which is also in package gnome-packagekit-session 3.14.2-0ubuntu2

The easiest way to fix this would be upgrading your PackageKit and
GNOME-PackageKit packages ;-)
I wonder why this issue happens at all though, since GS has a Breaks/Replaces
relation: gnome-packagekit-session (<< 3.16.0-2~)

[Bug 1507764] Re: metacity crashed with signal 5 in _XEventsQueued() ; forcing gnome session to logout

2016-02-11 Thread Stephane Lapie
It's hard to reproduce "at will". I personally run Firefox, Thunderbird,
Chrome, gedit, gjiten, skype, pidgin, Gnome Terminal, and always have
something like 20 windows open at a time on my main workspace.

Of note :
- When alt tabbing between windows, sometimes surfaces flash to black for one
instant before redraw happens.
This might indicate that the core problem with metacity crashing in the first
place is linked to Xorg or the nvidia driver ?
- Also, with previous versions of Ubuntu, I did have metacity crash on me at
times, but the session would keep on running, so I could relaunch metacity from
an open terminal (or via console using : DISPLAY=:0.0 metacity ) ; The crash
itself is not a problem, gnome-sessions's extremely poor handling of it is.

The easiest way for me to produce this crash is to edit text in gedit,
open a PDF in evince, and spend my time alt tabbing between them (which
happens quite a lot as I am doing translation work). At one point, I'll
start seeing redrawing artifacts (to explain : even though I switched
applications, the display still shows a black surface, or the
application which was on top of gedit at that time, and I have to
interact with the application for redraw to occur.

When I see this symptom, I know that within the next 50~100 window
switchings, I will crash.

The crash can even be triggered by clicking the window tab on the
application bar.

[Bug 1544712] [NEW] Don't require ofono to be available

2016-02-11 Thread Simon Fels
Public bug reported:

location-service currently seems to require ofono to be around as its
otherwise doesn't give us any location updates. Was found on a device
without a cellular modem (no rild running) so ofono was never started at
boot time. This seem to irritate location-service in what ever its
doing.

We've put in a hack to get it working by starting ofono even if no rild
is around.

[Bug 1542242] Re: Search doesnt return any results

2016-02-11 Thread Iain Lane
I did some poking, and it looks like the problem is that no icons are
coming back from appstream-glib when it makes a store.

The path that it looks in for uninstalled applications when parsing YAML
files (our case) was wrong - see the attached patch.

ximion, are you watching? Is this sane?

[Bug 1542242] Re: Search doesnt return any results

I wonder why that happens - appstream-glib should look in
/var/{lib|cache}/app-info/icons and /usr/share/app-info/icons for icons,
so maybe adding the same logic used for the XML to the YAML part in
appstream-glib makes sense.

[Bug 1542242] Re: Search doesnt return any results

2016-02-11 Thread Iain Lane
For me using appstream from the archive which is now in place:

  - appstreamcli search robocode works
  - The referenced icon exists
(/var/lib/app-info/icons/ubuntu-xenial-universe/64x64/robocode_robocode.png)
  - "app invalid as no pixbuf" from gnome-software --verbose

[Bug 797485] Re: Status Bar Covers File Name at Bottom

2016-02-11 Thread Axel Hanusch
In May 2016 the corresponding gnome bug (#651293) will have it's fifth
anniversary and is still status "NEW". I would not expect this to change soon
and waiting for it does not contribute to Ubuntu bug #1 very well. They
probably have other priorities.
When searching on Google for "ubuntu nemo instead of nautilus" I get 13400
results.
Maybe Nautilus' time as default file manager for Ubuntu should be over.

[Bug 1543144] Re: systemd: adt test failures againt Ubuntu-4.4.0-4.19 -- systemd-fsckd failing

2016-02-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package systemd - 228-6ubuntu1

---
systemd (228-6ubuntu1) xenial; urgency=medium

  * Merge with Debian unstable. Remaining Ubuntu changes:
- Hack to support system-image read-only /etc, and modify files in
  /etc/writable/ instead.
- Build using libseccomp on powerpc and ppc64el (See Debian #800818).

Upgrade fixes, keep until 16.04 LTS release:
- systemd Conflicts/Replaces/Provides systemd-services.
- Remove obsolete systemd-logind upstart job.
- Clean up obsolete /etc/udev/rules.d/README.
- systemd.postinst: Migrate mountall specific fstab options to standard
  util-linux "nofail" option.
- systemctl: Don't forward telinit u to upstart. This works around
  upstart's Restart() always reexec'ing /sbin/init on Restart(), even if
  that changes to point to systemd during the upgrade. This avoids running
  systemd during a dist-upgrade. (LP: #1430479)
- Provide shutdown fallback for upstart. (LP: #1370329)
- Break lvm (<< 2.02.133-1ubuntu1) and remove our dummy /etc/init.d/lvm2
  on upgrades, as it's shipped by lvm2 now.
- Make udev break on mdadm << 3.3-2ubuntu3, as udev's init script dropped
  the "Provides: raid-mdadm".
- Clean up /var/log/udev on upgrade (which is written under upstart, but
  not under systemd). (LP: #1537211)
- Migrate existing s390x network configuration to new names. (LP: #1526808)
- systemd.postinst: Bump Version comparison for migrating the UTC setting
  from /etc/default/rcS to /etc/adjtime, to run it for upgrades to 16.04.

systemd (228-7) UNRELEASED; urgency=medium

  * debian/tests/systemd-fsckd: Tame overly strict test for failed plymouth
unit, which is a race condition with plymouthd auto-stopping.
(LP: #1543144)
  * Do not warn about Wants depencencies on masked units. (LP: #1543282)
  * Drop timedated-don-t-rely-on-usr-being-mounted-in-the-ini.patch.
initramfs-tools has mounted /usr since Jessie, and tzdata now creates
/etc/localtime as a symlink too (see #803144).
  * Use-different-default-paths-for-various-binaries.patch: Drop path changes
for setcap (which is already a build dep and not used at all) and sulogin
(which is now in util-linux).
  * Remove obsolete udev maintainer script checks:
- Drop check for kernel >= 2.6.32, which released in 2009.
- Drop restarting of some daemons due to the devtmpfs migration, which
  happened before the above kernel even.
- Drop support for forcing upgrades on kernels known not to work via
  /etc/udev/kernel-upgrade. Don't pretend that this would help, as users
  could end up with a non-bootable system. Always fail early in preinst
  when it's still possible to install a working kernel.
- Drop postinst test for "running in containers" -- it's actually possible
  to run udev in containers if you mount /sys r/w and you know what you
  are doing. Also, the init.d script and systemd service do that check
  again.
- Keep the kernel feature and chroot checks, as these are still useful.
  Simplify check_kernel_features() by eliminating some variables.
- Drop debconf templates. Two of them are obsolete, and having
  CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED is now so implausible that this doesn't warrant
  the overhead and translator efforts.
  * Drop debian/tests/ifupdown-hotplug. The units moved into ifupdown, so the
test should go there too (see #814312).
  * debian/tests/control: Reorder tests and add a comment which ones should
not be run for an upstream build.
  * debian/tests/control: Rearrange tests and avoid removing test dependencies
to minimize testbed resets.
  * Add debian/extra/checkout-upstream: Script to replace the current
 source with a checkout of an upstream pull request, branch, or commit,
 and remove debian/patches/. Call from debian/rules if $TEST_UPSTREAM is
 set. This will be used for upstream CI.

systemd (228-6) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Make-run-lock-tmpfs-an-API-fs.patch: Drop /run/lock from
tmpfiles.d/legacy.conf to avoid the latter clobbering the permissions of
/run/lock. Fixes fallout from cleanup in -5 that resulted /run/lock to
have 0755 permissions instead of 1777. (LP: #1541775)

[Bug 1542242] Re: Search doesnt return any results

2016-02-11 Thread Iain Lane
In as_store_from_root() (used for XML files), it does

  /* guess the icon path after we've read the origin and then look for
   * ../icons/$origin if the topdir is 'xmls', falling back to ./icons */
  if (icon_prefix != NULL) {
  g_debug ("icon_prefix: %s", icon_prefix);
  g_autofree gchar *topdir = NULL;
  topdir = g_path_get_basename (icon_prefix);
  if (g_strcmp0 (topdir, "xmls") == 0 && priv->origin != NULL) {
  g_autofree gchar *dirname = NULL;
  dirname = g_path_get_dirname (icon_prefix);
  icon_path = g_build_filename (dirname,
"icons",
priv->origin,
NULL);
  } else {
  icon_path = g_build_filename (icon_prefix, "icons", NULL);
  }
  }

Where icon_prefix is the directory the XML file was found in. We could
do the same thing I suppose - our icons are in ../icons/ relative to the
.yml.gz - but is it worth it?

BTW I just tried and this seems broken on Debian too - can you confirm
that? Do you know what changed to make this happen?

[Bug 1544565] [NEW] Two results for 'gedit'

2016-02-11 Thread Iain Lane
Public bug reported:

Open gnome-software and search for gedit. There are two results.

Upstream renamed their desktop file, and we provide a copy with the old
name for compatibility purposes.

One result is for gedit.desktop and the other is for gedit's appdata
org.gnome.gedit.appdata.xml. The appdata references
org.gnome.gedit.desktop which has NoDisplay=true - maybe we could look
at that and hide the search result.

This doesn't happen when the application is uninstalled because we added
X-AppStream-Ignore=true to gedit.desktop (the one which is not
NoDisplay!) so that it's only presented once.

[Bug 1071345] Re: empathy contacts list compact mode is missing in 3.6

2016-02-11 Thread Peter Bittner
@vaab Personally, I think the smaller icons make Empathy more acceptable
than the bigger ones. It's a small step towards an optimal change, but
it's better than nothing. I say this while looking at the panel, and
hovering over a user entry, which gives me a tooltip with a sufficiently
big profile image.

We can of course start to work on a setting that can be changed in the
Preferences dialog. Get in touch with me if you want to do some pair
programming on this to get the issue off the table.

[Bug 1544471] Re: Install failure: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.PackageKit.service', which is also in package gnome-packagekit-session 3.14.2-0ubuntu2

2016-02-11 Thread Matthias Klumpp
Looks like Robert Ancell dropped the transition packages from GS - bad mistake
;-)
GS implements the PackageKit session interface now, while it was dropped from
GNOME-PackageKit in recent releases, so the transitional packages must be in
place, especially (obviously) if GPK is updated in Ubuntu.

I have no idea how these interfaces work when GS is installed without
PackageKit - afterall, the possibility to disable PK in GS was introduced to GS
only to be able to xdg-app-sandbox it, and not to actually use it without PK.
Maybe the session interface will still work though, and just use your aptd
stuff...

[Bug 1544565] Re: Two results for 'gedit'

2016-02-11 Thread Matthias Klumpp
This will have sideeffects on things which have a metainfo file - there are
several of them which should be shown in a software center, be it for
uninstallation or for being extended with addons in the SC.
So you really want to not-hide stuff which has a metainfo file, or decide to
ignore the issues this may cause (will definitely become a problem with more
addons appearing).

[Bug 1544558] Re: All apps are marked as 3rd party non-free

2016-02-11 Thread Matthias Klumpp
This is a design-decision by GNOME / GNOME Software: Everything which doesn't
declare a ProjectLicense in it's metainfo file that GS detects as free license
is declared non-free automatically.
I have no idea where the 3rd-party is coming from though, that's new - there
might be something wrong with the provenance detection in GS.

2016-02-11 Thread johannes
Confirmed on Linux Mint Debian with gvfs 1.22.2. Also, browsing with Thunar is
quite sluggish.

Workaround for some Nokia (Symbian) phones:

obexfs -b

where is the Bluetooth address of the device and is the
directory where you want to mount the device.

No root privileges required. Make sure you own the path, otherwise you
can only access it as root.

[Bug 1544747] [NEW] No udev persistent rules in Xenial = strange device names for NICs

2016-02-11 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Xenial on an intel NUC with 1 onboard GigE and one USB
GigE NIC.

I was setting up networking for MAAS and discovered that the device
names were ridiculous:

bladernr@critical-maas:/etc/udev$ ifconfig |grep HWaddr
eno1  Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr ec:a8:6b:fb:9f:66
enx8cae4cff4099 Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 8c:ae:4c:ff:40:99

In the previous Trusty install on this NUC with the same USB dongle,
they were named eth0 and em1. The predictable standard device names.

Looking at udevadm:

And finally, looking in /etc/udev:

/etc/udev/udev.conf

/etc/udev/rules.d:

/etc/udev/hwdb.d:

There are NO rules at all in udev for persistent names. Not even some
samples and defaults.

Looking at a completely different Xenial system with a single GigE NIC:
bladernr@galactica:~$ ifconfig

and again, nothing in the udev rules:
bladernr@galactica:~$ ls -a /etc/udev/*

/etc/udev/rules.d:

[Bug 1544734] [NEW] gedit freeze while changing tabs

in it, and a html page with some javascript - the contents can be seen

[Bug 1544558] Re: All apps are marked as 3rd party non-free

2016-02-11 Thread Matthias Klumpp
Some upstream projects do that, some don't...
For stuff coming from packages, we have no way to automatically determine a
proper license - DEP-5 copyright files are far too verbose, and not everyone
ships a DEP-5 copyright file, also the generator would need to open a source
package for it, which would slow down the data generator even further.
So probably this check should test if the package's origin is main or universe
and assume a free license in that case.

[Bug 1544480] [NEW] after upgrading to 16.04 (xubuntu) network drive not mounted

2016-02-11 Thread Willem Hobers
Public bug reported:

after upgrading to 16.04 (xubuntu) network drive not mounted
Asked by Willem Hobers on 2016-02-06

I upgraded from Xubuntu 14.04 to 16.04, because I would like to
attribute to the testing.

After the upgrade my network drive does not mount.

fstab
//192.168.178.73/Thuis /media/Thuis cifs
noserverino,guest,user=,nounix,_netdev,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777 0 0

This worked until the upgrade.

When trying to mount I get:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //192.168.178.73/Thuis,
   missing codepage or helper program, or other error
   (for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might
   need a /sbin/mount. helper program)

   In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail or so.

And if I do dmesg | tail, it gives:

[ 21.141585] cgroup: new mount options do not match the existing superblock,
will be ignored
[ 24.103109] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth1: link is not ready

[Bug 1544565] Re: Two results for 'gedit'

2016-02-11 Thread Iain Lane
This makes us not add the app to the store if its desktop file (same
filename as the ID) is NoDisplay. It works for gnome-software, but I'm
not sure if it is sane.

** Patch added:
"0001-as-store-Propagate-NoDisplay-true-from-.desktop-file.patch"

** Also affects: appstream-glib (Ubuntu)
