[Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows
I appear to have the inverse of this bug: when a window is active, I can click in that window but I cannot use the mouse to change apps or to select sub-windows of an app (such as file dialogs, I must use Ctrl-Alt- Tab) The mouse is completely useless on the gnome-shell panel or on the Activities display, the cursor tracks, but no clicks. Within an app some actions such as using a menu-bar or the scroll wheel can sometimes cause the mouse to cease all function, it's bluetooth so I switch it off and on and it works within that window again. If I want to change apps (or windows within an app) I use Alt-Tab and typically the mouse will then work in that window, but may fail again shortly after and need another restart. If I am in a File window and select a file that opens an app (eg VLC on a video) the mouse will be active in the newly opened app, and when that app closes, mouse control returns to the File window. This is using Ubuntu 17.04 upgraded from 16.04 but on an older machine that has been incrementally upgraded since about Ubuntu 12.04, both Unity and Gnome-Classic ran fine in 16.04 I'm using the VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 220] (rev a2) I was using the NVidea 304 driver, switched to the 340 and the problem remains. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1181666 Title: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-shell/+bug/1181666/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1482397] Re: Applications suddenly don't allow any interaction with them
correction, my report was with Ubuntu 17.04 and gnomeshell 3.24.1-0u -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1482397 Title: Applications suddenly don't allow any interaction with them To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-shell/+bug/1482397/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1695036] [NEW] multiple screens cannot align askew
Public bug reported: Using Ubuntu 17.04 and gnome-shell 3.24.1-0ubuntu on an HP laptop with an ASUS screen, I have the screen to the right of the laptop on the desk and set back so that *visually* the ASUS screen is to the right and about 50% up from the laptop screen. On the Unity desktop, when the Display configuration is set to the ASUS rectangle is moved up from the baseline of the laptop screen rectangle, there is a seamless path for the mouse to travel from one screen to the next, up at an angle, the cursor exits at 75% on one screen and enters the next at 25% of the height, a very natural movement. This does not work with Gnome-Shell: no matter how the rectangles in the Display system setup are aligned, if the cursor exits one screen at 25% of the height, it will enter the other screen also at 25% of the height, which is no big deal, but it is annoying and all the more so when it works in the deprecated Unity desktop. ** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1695036 Title: multiple screens cannot align askew To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1695036/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1695036] Re: multiple screens cannot align askew
Further to this, if the rectangles in the Display setup are set with the base of the right box 50% up the side of the left, the cursor will not move right of the lower 50% of the laptop screen or more left of the upper (non-overlapping) portion of the ASUS screen, however in the overlap area the mouse will still enter the receiving screen at the same proportional height as it was on the screen left, ie it is moving as if the screens were set horizontally aligned -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1695036 Title: multiple screens cannot align askew To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1695036/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 921610] Re: playback halts, refuses to play subsequent tracks
this may be some sort of sound conflict with xchat notifications (using aoss) as I noticed in lsof | grep snd that xchat was using the sound system and once it was removed and rhythmbox restarted, the sound returned. So it's some sort of blocking that's going on between the two. Normally I can select those files, press Del and start on the next dvd, but if any of the files from the previous burn are not owned by the current user and the current user has only read permissions, the dvd creator refuses to remove the files from the list to be burned. I can only clear the list by rebooting the computer! all remove or delete items on the menu are greyed, the Del key has no effect and attempts to change the permissions gives an authorization warning! I cannot keep rebooting ever time I burn a dvd; other people use this computer and reboots destroy their sessions. the problem needs to be fixed, but there also needs to be a work-around to clear the dvd creator's list of candidate files to be burned. it took a while to find an example, but here it is with a screen shot showing the Nautilus screen; I think the salient details is the odd bitrate (56kbps) reported by File -- I noticed this on one of the other examples, a super-low bitrate reported, and yet the audio file itself sounded fine, as clear as any of the neighbouring 128 or 192kbps files. Re: [Bug 725189] Re: OpenWith/OtherApp does not 'remember' the selected app
Ah, ok. I would have expected 'unconfirmed' ;) No, it's not just VLC, that's just the example I was doing at that moment. I have the same issue with other software that I use frequently in this way such as easytags and audacity. mp3 assignment is a good case in point; somehow it has become assigned to mp3gain as the default app, although previews (mouse-over) still play most mp3s. I see in the Open With list the other common mp3 players are all listed and this makes me wonder if perhaps I just misunderstood the Open With ... dialog box. Could it be that the Remember this app checkbox only applies to the command given as Use custom command whereas the select box choices are simply added to the menu until the menu is full and then subsequently ignored? Sure enough, if I enter the path of an app into that text box, the app I enter becomes the default assignment! So I suppose the UI could be made more clear, but otherwise, I guess it's case closed :) On Sat, Feb 26, 2011 at 2:10 AM, Glen Luscombe 725...@bugs.launchpad.netwrote: Hi teledyn, Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and make Ubuntu better. [Bug 692205] [NEW] request for Print Dialog restructuring for 2-side print use-case
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evince ok, this has bugged me since forever and today I thought I would just ask and see if it can be fixed. The use-case is printing two-sided on a single-page printer (which is just about all home/office printers) and in my case 2-sided printing accounts for about 40% of all print jobs, so it is worthy of being fixed. in the current model, to print double-sided, you must * select Print and arrive at the General tab * select Print Pages All, then click Reverse * switch tabs to Page Setup so you can select Only Print Even * then click OK, then you collect up the pages, turn them around and re-feed them, return to Print/General and * uncheck reverse * then you need to click Page Setup again so as to switch Only Print to Odd. if Only Print were moved into the General tab, things would be more efficient by two clicks and one page-reorientation (ie the eye must re- scan the panel to re-find where to go); since Only Print is semantically related to Print Pages and Reverse in that it selects the content page ordering, it even makes logical sense to relocate that function closer to its use-case related operations. granted my requested change, this common process becomes localized to the General tab (since it is a very common use-case) and all functions required for the operation are within a focal-point region on that one tab. I am using 0.6.1.5 from the Ubuntu 10.04, and I do not see any importing of AVI files; using version 0.4.3.1 in Ubuntu 8.04, the f-spot would see the .AVI files and offer to copy them, and then copy them into the correctly dated folders, although it would not show them in the thumbnail display. The new version launches when the camera is attached and opens the import dialog, but there are no files shown, the list is blank and the OK button is greyed. [Bug 239757] Re: Rhythmbox jams after other apps use ALSA
In Ubuntu 8.04, I have System/Preferences/Sound -- notice the slashmarks, the way everyone in the known universe signifies menu paths -- and there is no 'sounds', and under 'sound' there is no audio and video only Devices, of which the Sound Events says autodetect; I don't think this is at all the right place, it appears to deal with sound icons in the desktop. as stated before, I am using alsa and all other apps, including but not restricted to Flash 9, work fine. but the use of any other alsa app is blocked by Rhythmbox, and if they are in use when Rhythmbox is invoked, the program hangs on the playback switch, needing a kill signal to stop it. Audacious, on the other hand. works flawlessly, even with Flash-9 videos running; this was the same with Rhythmbox until only very very recently, which is why I suspected that some recent update, whether of rhythmbox or of Ubuntu in general, has broken it. It is suspicious that only Rhythmbox is affected, but to be fair, I have not exhaustively tried every possible combination on ever sound app available with Ubuntu, I have only tried mplayer, firefox/flash-9, audacious, mpg321, timidity and fluidsynth, and all of these work fine with each other, but none of these will share the audio system with Rhythmbox. -- Rhythmbox jams after other apps use ALSA https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/239757 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 239757] [NEW] Rhythmbox jams after other apps use ALSA
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox This is a NEW situation, it has only occurred since some updates from within perhaps the last month: 1) load Rhythmbox, play a track: the track plays fine, but no other alsa or aoss-wrapped sounds will play; the other apps go through the motions of playback, but no sound is heard. For example, a youtube will play the video, but there is no sound. 2) stop Rhytmbox play, other apps can now play sounds, eg Firefox Flash-9 like Youtube and aoss apps 3) press play on Rhythmbox, the play icon highlights, but the timetrack does not advance and there is no sound. 4) unselect play, it will un-highlight, but clicking on it will not highlight the play again 5) all selection controls and menu controls will work, but if you choose 'quit' Gnome will say the app is not responding and ask if you want to kill it. 6) stop the other sound apps and Rhythmbox remains paralized, the play icon will not respond to a click 7) if another app is already playing, eg Firefox playing a YouTube, if I start Rhythmbox it will fail immediately, lock up and not play the selected track, the icon highlights and dehighlights, and then responds no more. 8) while a Firefox YouTube is playing, other apps will play, only rhythmbox appears to be locked out. 9) even if the Firefox YouTube is stopped, Rhythmbox still will not play. I can close the YouTube tab, but it still does not allow Rhythmbox to play; mpg321 will play no problem, just RB is locked out, even if run within aoss this is a SERIOUS loss of functionality;RB cannot be used for background listening while working because it interferes with all other sound apps, and again, this is a new situation. Previously I could keep rhythmbox running all day with its own mix on low and let other apps run freely, there was no conflict. Previously this lockup of the playback would happen sporadically but only on startup; I thought it might be due to clicking the 'play' before Rhythmbox had completely scanned all the drives for fresh content, but I could never really prove that. Sometimes it would jam, most often it did not, and when it jammed the quit (using the X icon in the gnome frame) would say the app was not responding and ask permission to kill it. [Bug 239757] Re: Rhythmbox jams after other apps use ALSA
Geez get a grip man. I'm not surprised you get hundreds of bugs every day. I have solved my problem ... by switching to Audacious. audio and video preference?? wtf is that? Pardon my alarm, but do you have any notion of just how many preference dialogs are contained in the average Linux system? What do you want, chipsets and kernel drivers? and what does my video preference have to do with this? Rhythmbox only works at certain color depths or screen dot pitches? I was also under the impression that the report bugs menu item in the Rhythmbox Help menu would include attachments that would report my RELEVANT system configuration details and the state of the program at the time, but clearly that's the two hundred and first bug of the day. FWIW, I checked, and the 'preferences' dialog on your software does not include ANY audio OR video preferences. what audio and video preference is configured in system, preferences, sounds, audio and video? does using alsa there fixes your issue? neither of these questions parse. My initial report clearly says I am using alsa and use aoss and all the other alsa apps, including Audacious, work fine together, only Rhythmbox fails, and this is a new situation, it worked fine until recent Ubuntu updates on 8.04. Sorry if that is not short and clear enough for you. Stupid me, I thought I'd be doing you a favour by reporting the new holes in your software, especially a show-stopper like does not play well with others, especially something so specific as a short timeline that would need to be within a small set of update patches, but clearly I'm wrong, so I'll stop wasting your precious time and let you get on with those 199 other new bug reports. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox this is madness: when Rhythmbox starts up, it normally just starts up and loads my media files from a (read-only) NFS mount and everything is fine -- THIS time it started up and then stacked up over 6000 dialog boxes informing me that the NFS mounted files were read only and therefore it cannot save song information what sort of song information would it have to save??? It is a media PLAYER, it should play media, no? Why should it want to play WITH my media files? ;) Anyway, 6000 X-Close buttons is way too many to click, and this had never happened before so if this is due to some upgrade and its a new feature that cannot be turned off, I guess I'll have to hunt for a new media player. it is nonetheless a bug to open 6000 copies of ANY dialog box, especially 6000 identical dialog boxes that can only be closed one by one. This is Ubuntu 7.10, totally up to date. Re: [Bug 219549] Re: six thousand dialog boxes?? (saving song info)
It is weird; I use this program all the time and I don't recall any ubuntu updates on it -- it never happened before this morning and I just restarted it now and it didn't happen, so I'm /hoping/ the program state information that was attached to my report can help figure it out. unfortunately upgrading to hardy is not an option right now, and I also don't know if perhaps it may do it again if used after a hard reboot or something like that. -- Gary Lawrence Murphy garym at teledyn.com = www.teledyn.com - blog.teledyn.com - justus.teledyn.com - sbp.teledyn.com === The present moment is a powerful goddess (Goethe) -- six thousand dialog boxes?? [Bug 194490] [NEW] rhythmbox sound stops, but sound system is ok
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox ISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.10 DISTRIB_CODENAME=gutsy DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 7.10 ii rhythmbox 0.11.2-0ubuntu4 music player and organizer for GNOME I was listening just fine, no problems since I started using Ubuntu last year, it was about 10 seconds into a track when the sound just spontanously stopped. I tried restarting the track, I tried playing the previous track, I tried playing other tracks, no sound, none on headphones, none on the speakers although the visualization (monowave?) did show activity and the time-lapse indicator was still running, but no sound out of rhymbox. I checked the gnome volume control, everything was set, no muted channels. I tried a video file using totem, it played fine, no problems. I killed firefox and any other programs that were likely to be blocking the sound (timidity as an alsa daemon) still no sound out of rhythmbox. I exited the program and restarted it, no sound. I set the sound options to turn Crossfade on, still no sound. I tried mpg321, no problems, beautiful sound. it is only rhythmbox that has stopped functioning. [Bug 194490] Re: rhythmbox sound stops, but sound system is ok
DOH-- there's ... ah ... a seperate volume control for Rhythmbox, and, um, well ... it has a mute button. I must have hit some key combination hot-key that sets RB into instant mute, and was so surprised by the effect that I just didn't see the tiny red-bar crossed-out speaker-icon right there on the control panel. Ooops. Mystery solved. Ticket closed. -- rhythmbox sound stops, but sound system is ok https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194490 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 139084] Re: Unsafe removal of drives says to Eject while context menu says Unmount
ahem ... as an expert (started off in Yggrasil) I got to this point and froze, clicked bug report and fortunately found this page. To us experts unmount means remove from the mount table and in previous versions of linux hotplugging, this could prevent all future auto- mounting of the device. So I was highly reluctant to accept unmount and eject as synonyms, convinced instead that there must be some other place somewhere on the gui where the 'eject' would live. I couldn't find one, so I headed here. Why not call it what it is: Sync -- that's all it does, it just syncs the filesystems, and even non-technical people will understand that it only means to synchronize the device with any in-process transfers. Why hide it behind some inappropriate metaphor? Just because Microsoft does it that way? ;) I think Sync with a pop-over message that says finish all transfers would not only tell the users what the button does, but also imply an explanation as to why ignoring this step is a really bad idea :) -- Unsafe removal of drives says to Eject while context menu says Unmount https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/139084 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
