People with disabilities need to be able to do as much as possible without the need for assistance. Since GDM has never had a11y turned on by default, a person with disabilities would likely need help to set up either the old or new GDM to work for them. Or, if a person could boot up into console mode with a11y enabled, then the person could probably set up the configuration themselves. The long-term goal is to make GDM and GNOME in general work better for independent usage, but we're not there yet. I see people saying it's a regression, but what does it mean in practise? Is a11y busted? Is it a minor inconvenience affecting only login? Can someone please post a list of pros and cons for this specific issue wrt 2.22 vs 2.24? I'm not sure this is a really important regression. You can configure the new GDM to always launch various AT programs as needed. The main lost feature is that users cannot launch AT programs on demand. This feature is mostly useful in multi-user terminal situations (e.g. terminal servers), which aren't supported in the new GDM anyway. This feature is also useful in situations where multiple users may share the same computer, but some users don't want AT programs to launch and others do. The old GDM 2.20 doesn't turn on a11y by default anyway, so users with a11y needs need to configure GDM before using it. So the new GDM isn't much worse. I don't think this particular issue should be a blocker. The more serious issue is that the new GDM doesn't support managing multiple displays. But it seems the release team is agreeable to accepting this as a regression. At any rate, I'll leave this up to the release team to decide if the new GDM is ready or not. Well...hmm...if I read the answers correctly, I think what I'm hearing is that there are a lot of great ideas, but they aren't done yet. If this is the case, then I think this sounds like a regression. Please note that I think the ideas are really good and I respect the work being done. I'm not at all against it, and I have respect for the people doing the work. When completed, it sounds like it will be much better than what is working today. I hate putting deadlines for this kind of things, but translators need to know what we're going to do. I think Jon is in Portland right now for the Plumbers conference, so I'll try to answer for him. I believe Brian wrote some code to port the dwell listeners over to the new GDM some time ago. It's not completely finished, but it's most of the way there. On the other hand, Jon wants it to be done from gnome-settings-daemon instead of from GDM. One of the big rationales for Jon's recent desktop a11y work was so that a user can come up to a system in an unknown state (logged in or logged out) and take a known set of actions to make that system accessible to that user. So to answer the question to the best of my ability (and Jon or Brian would be better to answer), 1) there is some inprogress code that Brian Cameron wrote 2) that code targeted GDM when it was written, isn't slated for GDM now, and instead needs to get reworked to go into gnome-settings-daemon Hope that helps, Ray ___ desktop-devel-list mailing list desktop-devel-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/desktop-devel-list

An important thing for GDM is that in most cases, really, it's the distributors that decide what gets shipped and I don't know a lot of people using GDM from jhbuild. So keep in mind that the message that we want to send is mainly to distributors (FWIW, some already chose to stay with the old GDM, and some chose to go with the new one). I don't see us ignoring a good bunch of the comments (there are good points on each side), so there are two ways to go forward: + use GDM 2.24, and mention that it is not ready for all uses (listing the use cases where it needs work would help), and that GDM 2.20 is still available and working. + stay with GDM 2.20, and mention that we have a new GDM coming soon. We kind of did solution b for 2.22, but it turned out not a lot of people stepped up to fix the remaining issues in the new GDM. It could be because the community was not aware of all this, though. Right now, I'm leaning towards solution a (assuming the new GDM works fine and there's no major non-regression bugs). I'm not happy with regressions (I'd say this is a good example to keep in mind when reworking a module -- do not ignore the old feature set or clearly explain why your remove some features), but I would think that without sending a clear message, people will still stay with GDM 2.20 in 2.26, and so on. I'm leaning in the same direction. Having used the new GDM since it landed in rawhide (was that before even Fedora 9?) I must say that I've had no problems with it so far. A lot of issues hav ebeen addressed in the 2.24 timeframe. GDM 2.24 will have considerably less regressions than GDM had. I think that the issue is that re-implementing some of the regressions is just time-consuming. Plus some of the people working on GDM have also been focused on adding new functionalities (such as features available via the new GDM panel like power management and keyboard switching functionalities) rather than addressing the identified regressions. Re: GDM version used for GNOME 2.24?
Don't understimate this kind of stuff. I do understand that people like theming but I also believe theming a login screen leads to bad results. We should permit people to do so but it's not a stopper for me. And it is not a stopper for me, either. _However_, it is essential for someone to pick up where gdmsetup left and start to code. Sure, gdmsetup was old and somehow obsolete, but it was working. So we need something which works for most needed functions, at least, as soon as possible. I would like to do that, but I don't have enough expierence to do this effectively on short notice. Of course, if no one picks it up in two weeks, I propably would be lured into doing this using pygtk. I think if we ship gdm 2.24, a working themeable greeter implementation and a configuration GUI will popup in the Ubuntu forums during the first month. This is very speculative. Ubuntu still lacks lot of needed configuration apps, and why only this distro matters? It's like telling people we can't ship an audio player because it does not handle GUI skins yet. Most of us want a working tool in the first place, customizable GUI is just an eye-candy gimmick :) Problem is that users tolerate gdm only because it can be made to look cool. So in that light theming feature gets a must have status. In overall, someone must do it, release it or not to release it with GNOME. Most people I know tend to think desktop and login are one big solid box and applications are the things that sit in the menus. I think setting the login wallpaper in the Appearance capplet and enabling autologin in the Users/Groups management capplet is the natural place to look for such settings. Hi: I know Jon McCann and company did some proactive work to include accessibility in the redesign (thanks Jon!), but I'm not sure what the status of that is. If they can show that accessible login works, along with the keyboard/mouse/dwell gesturing mechanisms to launch assistive technologies at the login screen, it would ease my mind. :-) Thanks!
