Following a previous lp:241781 report and its  #20 comment

Using a desktop with vivid i386 and a hp photosmart c4585 linked to usb port. 
Problems:
- setting the printer 'on' by powering it up, its firmware does not send an 
event to awake the related usb port (due to powervasing rules the kernel is not 
aware of that new event, or it looks like )
- sending a printing job does not activate neither that usb port (but looks 
normal as it might be the printer job to activate its usb port)
- the printing job also seems lost: does not stay inside the queue

so im thinking about how the 'usb' device is monitored:
- at the login session (gnome-shell here) the hp printer is well identified 
(icon in the systray for a few seconds then disappear)
- when a print job is sent later, the printer does not awake: need to 
unplug/plug the usb cord, then i need to reload the printing job, choose the 
printer, then the job is done. But then the usb port is again deactivated and 
the next print job needs the previous workaround.

That is; so as i understand, sending a print job and/or powering 'on'
the printer SHOULD also first reinitiate the device to make it active.
Is it a udev/systemd/upstart/script/else missing/not implemented
mandatory job ?

Thanks Wayne for bringing attention back also to this bug.

I can confirm that the bug still exists with the latest released TB
version 31.3.0 with a cpu usage increase of about 12-13% on my Macbook
Air. As I wrote recently in response on your request regarding the
(likely related) bug 919485, unfortunately I cannot afford the time to
install the trunk version and use profiling tools. Yet anyone interested
could do for himself easily, since this bug can be reproduced in a
straightforward way: put any garbage IP address as e.g. the IMAP (or POP
or SMTP) server name and try receiving (or sending, respectively)
emails.

I suspect that this waste of CPU (and battery on mobile devices!) is due
to the same careless chunk of code performing a busy loop somewhere deep
in Mozilla's TCP client connect implementation.

BTW, the title of this bug report is misleading, as it is too narrow:
the misbehavior also occurs without any progress bar being shown, e.g.,
when trying to fetch emails.

  progress bar.  Such behavior is especially annoying on a laptop where
  you can hear the CPU usage because of a starting fan.

but the image would be a blank/transparent frame and no error was

It turned out that I needed the 'ghostscript' package as well. For
whatever reason, that wasn't installed by default on the server, and
installing libreoffice didn't pull it in.

I would suggest that this be a dependency of the package; while for
desktop users it's probably not an issue, and therefore is a small
portion of the userbase, until LO gets native EPS support this could
confuse people.

Seit dem Update auf Kernel 3.13.0-43 generic kann ich kein Hdmi-Gerät mehr 
anschließen. Wenn ich das Kabel einstecke, wird das Display schwarz, am Gerät 
kommt keine Signal an und ich kann auf meinen Rechner nicht mehr zugreifen. 
Weder abziehen des Kabels noch Fn+F7 noch irgendeine andere Tastenkombinatione 
helfen etwas, nur ein Neustart bringt eine Lösung. Wenn ich über GRUB mit dem 
vorherigen Kernel starte (3.13.0.-40 generic) funktioniert alles normal.

After updating to kernel 3.13.0-43 generic I can not connect a hdmi device 
more. When I plug in the cable, the screen goes black, the device comes at no 
signal and I can not access my computer. Neither pull the cable still Fn + F7 
keys nor any other combinations will help a little, just restart brings a 
solution. When I start over GRUB with the previous kernel (3.13.0.-40 generic) 
everything works normally.

  After a periord of time, computer locks up. I can see the mouse cursor
  moving around the desktop, unable to use any of the apps on the unity
  bar and unity doesn't respond. If I do a Ctrl + Alt + F1, I attempt to
  log in, after entering in the username, it just hangs, doesn't prompt
  for password. It seems that a process is stuck but unable to determine
  it. I end up having to reboot gracefully using the Alt + SysRq +
  R,E,I,S,U,B commands.

  Any logs to check or ideas would be helpful.

A further observation today:

Turning the laptop on from cold, the speakers appeared in the Sound pane
as expected. When testing the Videos app, the sound played normally at
first but a few crackles were heard. This seemed to have coincided with
setting the display to Full Screen. The sound from the speakers then
disappeared completely.

On executing a restart, there was nothing listed in the "Play sound
through pane". After two further restarts, the Built-in Speakers were
listed but accompanied by settings for HDMI/Video port showing options
of HDMI sound. This persisted after another restart.

I turned on a pair of Bluetooth headphones and these subsequently
appeared in the "Play sound through" panel with options for Telephony
Duplex (HSP/HFP) or High Fidelity Playback (A2DP) being offered. The
Test Sound button payed the test signal correctly through the
headphones.

When re-selecting Speakers, Built-in Audio, the correct Settings for
Speakers (Balance and Greyed-out Fade and Subwoofer) appeared. The Test
Sound button allowed the left and right speakers to be tested as normal.

This suggests that the kernel loses its connection to the speakers which
is not necessarily reset on restart. However, the operation of switching
between Bluetooth headphones and the speakers does seem to restore the
connection and the correct functionality.

I should be happy to test out the latest kernel software but I need
advice as to how to do this (files to download and commands to execute
via terminal) if anyone is able to help on this.

Title:
PCI/internal sound card not detected

Bug description:
This bug relates to the internal sound hardware in a Dell XPS 13
laptop. Since accepting an upgrade to the latest Ubuntu Extra software
today, the Systems Settings > Sound > Output no longer show the
internal speakers, despite numerous attempts to shut down and restart.

Before accepting the upgrade, the sound played normally through the
speakers.

Having upgraded the system from the Ubuntu 12.10 originally installed
with the laptop and finding comments relating to the software drivers
for the Intel WiFi and Bluetooth chip (Intel AC 7520) and touch
screen, I tried out an installation straight from a Ubuntu 14.04
bootable USB stick. The system worked well enough without these
drivers so I went ahead and replaced the whole installation from the
USB stick and subsequently accepted the upgrade to 14.10.

I tried plugging in a headset and this produced a screen allowing me
to select the type of headset (mono, with or without mic or stereo).
An extra entry appeared in the System Settings > Sound > Output pane
allowing me to choose between the headset or the speakers and to test
the audio on each one. However, unplugging the headset seemed to
produce intermittent behaviour, the system being uncertain as to
whether the headset was in use. This was solved by re-booting and the
system and speakers behaved as expected.

Now I have the situation that the speakers are not shown in the Sound
> Output pane and the Output Volume slider stays at zero and is unable
to be moved with the pointer. The volume control slider in the
dropdown panel from the speaker symbol in the system tray appears to
respond to movement from the pointer and the Fn-F11 & F12 keys.
However, with no output device shown, there is no sound output to the
speakers.

Several attempts to restart the system have failed to restore the
speaker functionality.

I have build libimobiledevice5 1.1.7 from Debian experimental. I wasn't able to 
build usbmuxd 1.1.0 because of dependency problems, however. With only 
libimobiledevice-1.1.7 I still get the same error, so I guess both 
libimobiledevice and usbmuxd need an update.
On a current Archlinux installation with libimobiledevice-1.1.7 and 
usbmuxd-1.1.0 things work as expected and I can access the installed 
applications on my iPhone (currently iOS 8.1.2).
Both packages seem to be stuck in experimental, so I don't know if it's 
possible to backport them right now.

Just another observation: switching back and forth between Speakers and
Headphones sometimes puts the headphones into the Telephony Duplex mode.
Even though the High Fidelity Playback seems to be selectable, the Test
Sound button only results in the Mono test being offered. A workaround
is to turn off the headphones in the Bluetooth drop-down panel and then
turn them back on. The headphones then re- appear in the "Play sound
through" list with the Settings for Headset showing High Fidelity
Playback and the Test Sound button allowing testing of right and left
hand channels. (If the Telephony Duplex mode is selected, the Test Sound
button allows Mono testing as expected.)

This further suggests that the kernel is not necessarily recognising the
full features of the Bluetooth headset every time that they are
selected.

(Whilst writing this, I am continuing to monitor the sound output of the
Videos app. It appears to be stable without any interference from the
Firefox Web Browser!)

Also, the laptop has warmed up since the previous report when it was
switched on from cold. Hopefully the hardware is not sensitive to
temperature.

The problem is in naming. I dutifully named seat 0 "seat0", but I also 
dutifully followed the convention of naming
seat 1 "seat-1", with a dash between the "t" and the "1" - _EXCEPT_ in my 
xorg.conf...

When I did s/seat1/seat-1/g in my xorg.conf, the two seats appear correctly.
I did not stress test it too much, but will do now. If I have a problem I will 
let you know immediately.

I've been using multiseat setups for over a decade now and it has always
been at least a bit "hakish"; each and every dist-upgrade (I've been
using Debian testing, where dist-upgrades happen frequently) has been a
threat that thigs would stop working. What is proposed here looks like a
proper solution to multiseat setups. Thanks for your work!

  * In Xorg-server versions older than 1.16, if Xorg is started as a
  non-seat0 X server (i.e. if it was started with "-seat " option
  where "" != "seat0"), it only probes platform bus for graphics
  devices, leaving devices with non-KMS drivers (like NVIDIA proprietary
  drivers and old ones like xf86-video-siliconmotion) unreachable.

  Patch "xfree86_allow_fallback_to_pci_bus_probe_for_non_seat0.patch"
  from lp:~ubuntu-multiseat/xorg-server/trusty-matchseat fixes this.

  * systemd-logind has no intrinsic mechanism to assign non-KMS graphics
  devices to seats. In this case, one should tag another seat device
  (keyboard, USB hub, etc.) in udev as "master-of-seat", and provide a
  suitable xorg.conf for that seat. In order to avoid that a given
  xorg.conf affects other seats, it should be passed to Xorg via
  "-config xorg.conf.custom" option, which requires X server command
  line customization support in DM in use (GDM, for example, has no such
  support).

  Patch "xfree86_add_matchseat_key_to_xorg_conf.patch" from lp:~ubuntu-
  multiseat/xorg-server/trusty-matchseat introduces a new MatchSeat key
  for xorg.conf sections "Device", "Screen", and "ServerLayout", which
  will target a given seat only. Example file

If I boot 3.6.0-43 in failsafe X, X starts but I get some dialog boxes
with unreadable fonts (or dots, they are so small that it looks just
like dots).
