[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1768976] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04
If we can confirm thermald is not the culprit, we can do a kernel bisection to find the regression commit. First, find the last good -rc kernel and the first bad -rc kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ Then, $ sudo apt build-dep linux $ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git $ cd linux $ git bisect start $ git bisect good $(the good version you found) $ git bisect bad $(the bad version found) $ make localmodconfig $ make -j`nproc` deb-pkg Install the newly built kernel, then reboot with it. If the issue still happens, $ git bisect bad Otherwise, $ git bisect good Repeat to "make -j`nproc` deb-pkg" until you find the commit that causes the regression. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1768976 Title: Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Ubuntu is overheating at my laptop. Opening youtube on firefox is enough for critical temperature shutdown. Using lm-sensors for monitoring on 18.04 the temp varies between 70 and 85°C with only firefox or chrome open and doing nothing. On my old 16.04 with same using, the temp varies between 55 and 70°C. First thought was the driver nouveau is the problem, and finally I was able to install by add "nouveau.modeset=0" at livecd boot options, without temp shutdown. After install I disable the nouveau at modprobe blacklist, but the system continues overheating and shutdown with basic usage. I have no idea what's happening with the bionic at my laptop. [Expired for cups (Ubuntu) because there has been no activity for 60 days.] ** Changed in: cups (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Expired -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to cups in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/814908 Title: lpstat should return failure when cupsd is not running Status in cups package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: We find ourselves needing to programmatically check whether cupsd is running (so that we can use lpadmin to add our site's printers for our users, but there are many other possible reasons one might want to do this). 'lpstat -r' seems the obvious way to do so, but the command always returns zero (success). Thus, we are forced to parse the text output of 'lpstat -r', which is quite fragile to that text changing in a future release. 'lpstat -r' should return nonzero when cupsd is not running, allowing for a robust determination of whether cupsd is running (and thus other commands will fail). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1728012] Re: Many 3rd party scanner drivers are broken by a sane change
Since 2017 until now (2019) For EPSON's website provides Linux packages for scanners and printers as (.deb, .rpm, or source) which are simple to install. In two steps (if you have it on the network). Step 1. Go to EPSON Driver and Software Download Center (http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/) Download and unpack the scanner driver (Image Scan, currently version 1.3.40) imagescan-bundle-linuxmint-19-1.3.40.x64.deb.tar.gz Then, run ./install.sh sudo ./install.sh Step 2. (for a newtork scanner) Edit the file /etc/sane.d/epson2.conf Modify the line net 192.168.xxx.yyy (to match your scanner IP) That's it. A full how to is at my website http://diegoarimany.com/installing-epson-printers-and-scanners-under-linux-mint/ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to sane-backends in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1728012 Title: Many 3rd party scanner drivers are broken by a sane change Status in sane-backends package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Many scanners can no more be used since sane has changed something: The 3rd-party plug-in the vendor provides as .deb package will still install. Furthermore, if the main X/Xwayland session was started by Gdm when the nvidia driver was loaded, the session will keep the nvidia module loaded, and prevent the system from switching off the dGPU. Also, the nouveau driver will be loaded, if nvidia is not, and this can cause problems to unsupported NVIDIA GPUs. The solution involves the following changes: 1) Solving the problem in systemd (LP: #1777099) 2) Adding code in gpu-manager and in nvidia-prime to unload the nvidia modules, and to allow the PCI device to sleep. 3) Making a slight change to the current patch in Gdm, used to call the PRIME scripts before and after a Gdm session (so that gpu-manager gets actually called on log out) 4) Adding code in gpu-manager to kill the main X/Xwayland session on log out, if the session is preventing us from unloading the nvidia driver. A new X/Xwayland session will be created after unload the module. 5) Removing the systemd service that loads nouveau from the nvidia packages. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1810168] [NEW] Move the Keyboard repeat settings back to the Keyboard settings
Public bug reported: I've just installed Ubuntu 18.04 and wanted to set the keyboard repeat delay and speed. So I type "Keyboard", hoping to land in the same place I would on Ubuntu 16, but the Keyboard settings in 18 only have shortcuts. Huh? I had to Google "how to set the keyboard repeat rate Ubuntu 18", which is already a big red flag. I'm sure there was a reason for that setting to be moved under "Universal Access", but was there a user acceptance test? Maybe it makes some logical or architectural sense to have Keyboard Repeat Settings under "Universal Access", but to me and to many other users[1] it makes no sense at all. To quote one user: "Great UI design. Why would you put keyboard settings in Settings->Keyboard? Haha that'd be stupid! We should hide them in accessibility under what looks like a toggle-button but isn't instead... Edit: Speed is backwards? Oh my god someone *designed* this??" [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1800043] Re: nautilus cannot write on nfs file share
As for the command line: copying and deleting works with the usual cp/rm commands and also with the gio tool (gio copy/gio remove). However, it doesn't work with nautilus. The nautilus UI simply doesn't let me place the icon of the desired file into the root window. It "flies" back to where it came from. Thus, it behaves exactly as you would expect from a read-only file system. BTW: copying _from_ the root system with nautilus also works correctly. And, again, once I go into one of my folders - everything works as usual. For now I decided to mount my share with CIFS - which also works as desired. Best regards Peter -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1800043 Title: nautilus cannot write on nfs file share Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I installed Ubuntu 18.04LTS comming from 16.04LTS where I did not have this weird problem: If I mount a NFS share from a file server (i.e. Synology DS 418) Nautilus is not able to perform any write access to it (write, delete, make new directory,...). I can do all of this operations by using shell commands (touch, cp, mkdir...) in a terminal window. Also, nautilus can perform these actions if I start it with root privileges. Even stranger is the following: even though nautilus cannot write into the mounted shares it is able to write into its subfolders. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1585084] Re: Volume notification keeps popping up constantly (the notify-OSD bubble on top-right corner)
i am using 16.04 version on both of my laptop and pc ! use same downloaded ubuntu version on both systems but i have this problem just on my pc! in addition when i just plug my headphone or suspend the system the problem is resolved. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1585084 Title: Volume notification keeps popping up constantly (the notify-OSD bubble on top-right corner) Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04 yesterday, I did a clean install while preserving the home directory which is mounted in a separate partition. Even during the installation I had constant volume notification bubble appearing on the top-right corner of my screen, it would come and go about twice every minute. I just thought it was due to installing hardware drivers or something but the problem persisted even when I booted into the freshly installed system. I did some searching and two users reported the exact problem. And one more suggested this happens because constant disconnect and reconnect of the sound card which makes sense as the sound settings flashes briefly during every popup. Someone on IRC suggested to kill pulseaudio and thus restart it, that does not fix the issue. I also tried the Live environment thinking it might be due to some old config files in home partition (which was preserved during upgrade), but this problem happens in the live environment as well, which makes sense because it was present during installation as well. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1780365] Re: Credentials located in gnome-keyring can be compromised easily
This issue was reported upstream: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-keyring/issues/5 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-keyring in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1780365 Title: Credentials located in gnome-keyring can be compromised easily Status in gnome-keyring package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Dear all, I figure out that login credentials, located in gnome-keyring, can be easily compromised. Linux based on Gnome basically uses ‘gnome-keyring’ as their backend to store login credentials in a secure manner. Specifically, google- chrome browser, network-manager and gnome-online-accounts use this as a backend solution to store login credentials. To use this, authentication is performed together with gnome-keyring as part of ‘pam-gnome-keyring.so’. At this point, it remains unlocked until system is shut down or logged out. In this state, a simple program that uses ‘Secret Service API’ call and their ‘D-Bus’ interface can easily retrieve login credentials from those gnome-keyring without any privilege escalation, listening into the X events going to another window, or installation an application on target computer. (please check PoC source https://github.com/sungjungk/keyring_crack and video https://youtu.be/Do4E9ZQaPck) The issue is different from the content shown on the Ubuntu Security FAQ and GnomeKeyring Wiki [1][2]. It was even said that “PAM session is closed via the screensaver, all keyrings are locked, and the ‘login’ keyring is unlocked upon successful authentication to the screensaver”. After trying to crack the keyring, it was far from what they really thought. It is no different than plain text file for login credentials somewhere on disk. To deal with, the root cause of the problem is that ‘Secret Service API’ on anyone can be easily accessed on DBus API. If access control is enabled, only well-known? or authorized processes, such as google- chrome, network-manager, and gnome-online-accounts, will be able to access the login credentials. DBus originally provides capability that is essential to access control of DBus API by defining security policy as a form of *.conf file. Currently, various services based on DBus interface are employing above security policy feature to perform access control. For example, login/system related functions is controlled from ‘login1’ and its security policy is described in “org.freedesktop.login1.conf”. (see https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/master/src/core/org.freedesktop.systemd1.conf) Likewise, why don’t we try adopting the access control of secret service API into gnome-keyring environment? Due to the fact that a process with root privilege can access “.conf” file, an approved program may only update the target file during installation process Here is really simple ‘org.freedesktop.secrets.conf’ example. = http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/dbus/1.0/busconfig.dtd";> = Many Thanks!! Permission denied." If I acknowledge the error with a click on OK everything seems to work fine, nonetheless. One cause for the error message is clear: It's the permissions of /home which I always set to 0711 on shared computers. The error message does not appear when I change permissions to 0755. I am afraid this error might very well be not a problem of gnome- terminal but of a library or any other shared package. I thought I have seen it appear in other programs too but I could reproduce it only in gnome-terminal. Thus, I hope that reporting it against gnome- terminal at least might help others find this bug. And maybe the developers of gnome-terminal can help to clarify the actual causes. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 797007] Re: new tab can push terminal window off the screen
this problem no longer exists on cosmic, gnome-terminal 3.30.1-1ubuntu1. ** Changed in: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/797007 Title: new tab can push terminal window off the screen Status in gnome-terminal package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal In natty, gnome-terminal 2.32.1-0ubuntu3: Open a terminal window with a single tab. Move it so that the bottom edge of the terminal is on the bottom of the screen. Now, open a new tab, which has the effect of making the window taller. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 842730] Re: gnome-terminal changes cursor color after terminal tab switch
We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all reported bugs in a timely manner. Ubuntu 11.10 (oneiric) reached end-of-life on May 9, 2013 and Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) reached end-of-life on April 28, 2017. Does anyone still see a problem related to the one that was reported in a currently supported version of Ubuntu? Please let us know if you do and in which version of Ubuntu otherwise this report can be left to expire in approximately 60 days time. Thank you for helping make Ubuntu better. Paul White [Ubuntu Bug Squad] ** Changed in: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/842730 Title: gnome-terminal changes cursor color after terminal tab switch Status in gnome-terminal package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Using ANSI escape sequences you can change the cursor color from the command-line, like so: echo "ESC]12;rgb:8000/8000/8000^G"; Where 'ESC' and '^G' are the single characters: escape and control-g. After doing this when you switch tab and back again the cursor color will have changed to black. TEST CASE: 1. Open a gnome terminal 2. Open a second tab (CTRL+SHIFT+T) 3. On the first tab enter the following sequence on the prompt: $ echo "ESC]12;rgb:8000/8000/8000^G"; Where: ESC = CTRL+V CTRL+ESC ESC = CTRL+V CTRL+G => The cursor color will change to grey 4. Switch to the second tab then back to the first tab Result: The cursor color changes to black. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 157708] Re: terminal gets wrong DISPLAY with dual head xorg
Upstream bug #580103 is showing "RESOLVED FIXED" on 2009-06-11 No comments on bug report for over 9 years so marking "Fix Release" to close ** Changed in: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Committed => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157708 Title: terminal gets wrong DISPLAY with dual head xorg Status in gnome-terminal package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal Ubuntu Gutsy, gnome-terminal version: 2.18.2-0ubuntu1 I have dual screen (non xinerama) xorg setup (i810), so there is two separate displays, :0.0 and :0.1. When I open new terminal from 1) Applications > Accessories > Terminal or 2) launcher from panel (type: Application, command: gnome-terminal) or 3) laucher from desktop (type: Application in Terminal, command: zsh) DISPLAY is sometimes wrong: terminal opened on :0.0 gets DISPLAY=:0.1 and vice versa. Usually when this starts to happen, it is hard to get it right again. Usually I have to close all terminals in both displays before terminal again gets right DISPLAY. When this starts to happen seems quite random, but is really annoying in dual screen x, where you can't move windows from one screen to another. Maybe this bug is somehow related to gnome-panel bug, where Workspace Switcher gets attached to wrong display: Bug #110899.
