[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1971434] Re: Display powersave only blanks, but does not turn off

2022-08-17 Thread Cas
I am facing the same issue since upgrading from 20.04 to 22.04.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3 with an external monitor (Dell
P2720DC) connected via USB-C displayport that used to turn off completely but
now only blanks with the backlight remaining on.

Display server: X11
Display driver: Nvidia 510.85.02

`xset dpms force off` turns off monitor correctly
gjs is already installed

Any help with debugging this would be useful since I don't see any
issues in journalctl

I still need to test if Nvidia Prime profile has any effect (performance
vs on-demand) or if same occurs under Wayland.

Display powersave only blanks, but does not turn off

Status in gnome-settings-daemon package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Recently upgraded to Ubuntu 22.04, and it seems like the power-saving
feature in Gnome 42 does not actually turn off the screen(s) after X
minutes, but just blanks them. When I manually run `xset dpms force
off`, they do properly turn off and go to powersave mode.

  1) Description: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
 Release: 22.04

  2) gnome-settings-daemon:
Installed: 42.1-1ubuntu2
Candidate: 42.1-1ubuntu2

  3) In Settings -> Power -> Screen Blank, set the inactivity period to
5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the screens should turn off.

  4) Screens go black, but remain active and consume (too much) power.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2021-04-11 Thread Cas
I installed driver version 460.39 and encountered what I assume is the
same bug, the only usable scaling was 100% and 200% with the other
fractional scaling options 'zoomed' in slightly so the right-hand side
of the desktop was cut-off.

I did however find a workaround on AU
https://askubuntu.com/a/1321851/8570 that might help identify the
problem.

Open nvidia settings with root privileges:

sudo nvidia-settings

In PRIME profiles change *Performance* to *On-Demand*
Restart system
Verify that fractional scaling is working again
Reopen nvidia-settings as above and change *On-Demand* back to *Performance*
Restart system
Verify that fractional scaling is still working

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1908469] Re: Cannot install .deb packages opened from Firefox

2021-04-10 Thread Cas
As others have suggested this is a snap app issue with /tmp dirs and can
be verified with:

gnome-software --local-filename '/tmp/mozilla_user0/app_amd64.deb'

snap-store --local-filename '/tmp/mozilla_user0/app_amd64.deb'

I have added workaround to AU to use 'gnome-software' for opening debs:
https://askubuntu.com/a/1330582/8570

I did also find an alterntive workaround so that all snap apps have
access to /tmp: https://askubuntu.com/a/1264341/8570

Bug description:
Suppose in Firefox you click a link to a .deb package. A dialog named
"Opening [filename].deb" opens. If you select "Open with", then the

  started on that .deb file.

Next, Software Install loads and fails with "Failed to install file:

If on the other hand, in Firefox's "Opening [filename].deb" dialog, if
I select "Save File" instead, the .deb file ends up in the user's
Downloads directory. Software Install works fine with the package
  there.

I don't want to get too much into solutioning or "why". The main point
of this bug is that I should not get a weird error just because I
selected "Open with" instead of "Save File". This happens with a
vanilla install of Ubuntu, with nothing else installed, so the product
isn't working in an intuitive way.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1825593] Re: Display scale not remembered when X11 Fractional Scaling is enabled

2020-06-12 Thread Cas
I don't think this is quite fixed.

I have my laptop display set to 2048x1152 and it connects fine to an
external monitor via thunderbolt running the full 2560x1440 resolution
but when disconnecting the display would reset to default 2560x1440
resolution with 200% scaling.

After reading this bug report about fractional scaling, I disabled the
option and now disconnecting the display from the laptop it returns to
my preferred 2048x1152 with 100% scaling.

I am using the latest mutter version:

dpkg -s libmutter-6-0 | grep Version
Version: 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

After upgrading to 19.04, I enabled the experimental 'x11-randr-
  fractional-scaling' setting. If I set scaling to 125, 150, or 200%,
the setting is remembered and used the next time I log in. If I set
scaling to 100%, however, the next time I log in the scaling switches
back to 200% automatically. I only want to use fractional scaling for
  external monitors.

  [ Test case ]

  - Use a multi-monitor setup
  - Enable Fractional scaling under X11 (from display settings)
  - Setup mixed-DPI settings in gnome-control-center
  - Log-out
  - Log-in again
+ Settings should be preserved

  [ Regression potential ]

It's not possible to set some scaling combinations any more with
  multiple or single monitors.

  - Configuration is not restored at all.

  [ Known issue ]

Monitor settings won't be preserved disabling fractional scaling or
enabling it in the wayland session.

  -

Background: This is on a Dell XPS 9360 with a 1920x1080 ~168 DPI
screen. Pretty standard configuration. I have my DisplaySize set to
  294x165 in Xorg.conf, Xft.dpi=168, GTK font scaling factor 1.0.

I have been unable to find an appropriate combination of settings
where 168 DPI is respected for accurate font rendering, while at the
same time not scaling up the rest of the UI to unusable proportions.
Fractional scaling seems to be the only way to adjust some Gnome UI
  elements.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Connect an audio interface. I tried with BT headphones and speakers as
well as a USB microphone/output.
  2. Make sure it's the one selected as "Output device"
  3. Click "Test"
-> the test sound outputs from the internal laptop speakers (NOK)
  4. Select "Speakers - Built-in Audio" as Output device and click "Test"
-> the test sound outputs from the internal laptop speakers (OK)
  5. Try to switch back to the BT device and click Test
-> same result as in step 3

Tested with 2 different BT devices (one headset and one speaker) as
well as a USB audio interface (Zoom H2N microphone).

Attached are btmon logs captured during the procedure described above,
and pactl logs capture after step 7.

I was previously using 19.04 and 19.10 on this device and never
  experienced this kind of issue.

Up to this morning, it was harder to connect the BT device, but once
connected, the sound would output on it as expected. Now, the BT
connection seems to work better, but I can't output the sound to the
  BT device...

I tried to reboot the device, and also to suspend/resume, but in each
case, the BT device can connect back, but the sound is still output
from the internal laptop speakers, even when the BT device is selected
  in the Sound settings.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1758306] Re: Cannot switch mouse primary button to Right (left-handed) in Settings

2018-09-12 Thread Cas
@leonciomaya

This issue was definitely fixed so you there is likely something else
going on with your system. Here are some suggestions:

Check all updates are installed? Try proposed updates?
Is this with mouse or trackpad?
Have you checked what gsettings is reporting?

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.mouse left-handed

Perhaps try a booting with a livecd ubuntu and test mouse there.

I will also say that it can be assumed that everyone including the OP
consider this specific issue fixed (I am muting this bug). Therefore you
will need to open a new launchpad bug. You can also use the ubuntu
forums or IRC for direct help with diagnosing the issue.

I'm not 100% sure whether this is a unity, compiz, or update-manager

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1350527] [NEW] Custom keyboard shortcuts using Esc key do not work

2014-07-30 Thread Cas
Public bug reported:

In 12.04 I used to have Shift + Ctrl + Esc as a custom shortcut to
suspend my machine, upon upgrading I have found that any combination use
Esc key will not run the command. It appears to be a regression from
13.10 as another user is reporting the same issue in askubuntu:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/489418/keyboard-shortcut-shift-ctrl-
escape-does-not-work

Using any alternative such as Shift + Ctrl + F1 works fine.

** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 158855] Re: Unable to use escape in keybindings

2014-07-30 Thread Cas
@Tory Gaurnier I don't believe this bug is related to the issue you are
seeing as using Shift + Ctrl + Esc was working fine in 12.04 - 13.10 and
seems to be a regression in 14.04. I have opened a new bug #1350527
against gnome-settings-daemon so we will see what happens.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 868358] Re: Hibernate hotkey (fn + ...) triggers suspend to ram

2013-11-22 Thread Cas
Re-testing on 13.10 initially I found that nothing changed however I
revisited this bug and followed the suggestion in #22.

Using dconf-editor I checked org.gnome.gnome-settings-
daemon.plugin.power key and found button-suspend: suspend so I
changed it to button-suspend: hibernate and my Fn+F1 button now works
properly again!

Note in 13.10 `/lib/udev/keymap` is no longer available and you will
need to install and run `evtest`

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1149427] Re: huge mouseover box

2013-11-10 Thread Cas
This keeps happening for me too (12.04), noticed it first after a
Firefox update to version 19 or 20. Restarting Firefox resolves it for a
while but it always reoccurs. I am currectly testing in safe mode to see
if it is caused by an Add-on and will update ticket if I find anything.

It has also been reported by another user to Mozilla Support:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/968045

Seems to currently only affect Ubuntu 12.04 users.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1168858] Re: Nautilus window opens behind current window

2013-04-24 Thread Cas
xdg-open is the tool used in linux to open the default application but
how can it be used by user/scripts/applications (without an api) if it
doesn't behave as expected with nautilus? Following on from that if you
then set the env var (as per my xdg-open change) in scripts then we have
gone full circle and those scripts will then steal focus.

Why does it matter if gnome-open knows which event as long as a correct
timestamp is issued if no timestamp has been set? If it is possible to
modify gnome-open to correctly set a timestamp that seems like a good
solution and it does mention in the gtk api that the timestamp is only
ideally from the event so it's not a requirement.

2013-04-23 Thread Cas
This is a regression from 12.04 to 13.04 and you are determined to pin
the blame on Deluge despite my example that simply opening Nautilus from
the terminal displays this regression and Deluge does nothing more than
call xdg-open.

I have just realised how ridiculous this is after testing any
application. Basically ANY application that the user wishes to open a
folder to view the location of a file will be affected in 13.04.

This will annoy the hell out of a large number of users.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1168858] Re: Nautilus window opens behind current window

2013-04-23 Thread Cas
From my position the logic behind the changes just don't make sense and
I am thinking of the bigger picture not just Deluge.

I can open any file with xdg-open, with the associated application
opening focused, file-roller, image viewer, firefox etc... So that begs
the question why is Nautilus a special case and we have to jump through
hoops to open a Nautilus window focused?

An application developer when using xdg-open should not have to worry
about special cases involving Nautilus file manager to have the new
window focused like every other application.

With 13.04 so close to release all the applications that use the 'open
folder' feature will encounter this issue and users (inc devs?) will be
irate but you have not addressed this concern?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1015751] Re: Text is randomly rendered bold when scrolling

2012-08-24 Thread Cas
I don't remember seeing this before however noticed it today on gizmodo
site while scrolling through a long set of comments.

A little searching and I came across a blog that refers to this same
Firefox rendering issue and apparently one solution is for the website
in question fixing the CSS file by adding opacity: .99 to the body
element.

http://muddyhudson.com/blog/1-socialtech/184-weird-bold-text-rendering-
error-when-scrolling-in-firefox

On Firefox bugzilla there is a text rendering whilst scrolling bug but
it does not result in the same text bolding issue as here so this may
need reporting upstream as a seperate issue.

This is still an issue in Precise with icons being created in the dead-

impossible to rescue the icons without selecting them all and messing up

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 868358] Re: hibernate key (fn + 12) triggers suspend on ThinkPad X200s

I have the same issue on Ubuntu Precise but as others have pointed out
this worked fine in Ubuntu Natty and the regression occurred in Oneiric.

The key for hibernate on my Dell Precision is Fn+F1 and in the udev dell
keymap it is listed as 0x8A suspend but it suspends to ram not to disc
so clearly the command is not executing the correct task.

This bug is not a duplicate as it is a distinctly different option.

Bug #736606 refers to Lid Close behaviour and I think should be closed

This bug refers to Battery Critically Low behaviour.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 854624] Re: [oneiric] suspend/hibernate not performed according to Power Settings

2011-10-01 Thread Cas
The OP bug description is rather vague and the comments saying me too
are equally vague.

The original bug for me was that there was basically no automatic
suspend/hibernate prior to this bug being fixed so my laptop even on
battery power would never suspend. I assume this was the case with the
OP and that is why he set it to fix released.

To save a lot of confusion the best thing to do is for someone to create
a new bug which would be based on the new comments that their machines
suspend even with Don't suspend is selected.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 857667] Re: Asked for password on resume with Automatic Login enabled

2011-09-30 Thread Cas
The screen lock is disabled and does not ask for a password when the
screen blanks.

From what I read the functionality of suspend/hibernate should be that
it always asks for a password when resuming except if the user has
enabled automatic login. So this works when power management suspends
the machine, as I have enabled automatic login, but when I manually
suspend it asks for a password.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 857667] Re: Asked for password on resume with Automatic Login enabled

2011-09-30 Thread Cas
Interesting, where did you read that?

I think it was a gnome bug report about a similar issue and there was a
comment that is was the expected functionality. Afraid I don't know
which one exactly.

how do you suspend (lid close, indicator; ..)

I usually use the indicator but just tested with the lid close and that
resumes without password!

Searching the closed gnome bugs I found something very similar:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=563836
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-session/+bug/666746

A workaround was suggested so I used dconf-editor to find
org.gnome.desktop.lockdown and change disable-lock-screen to True.
Testing the suspend option from the indicator menu now resumes without
password.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 863425] [NEW] Choosing system-settings from indicator menu does not bring existing window to foreground

Public bug reported:

Testing with Oneiric 11.10 I have found that if I have the system-

It does work as expected if you simply open system-settings and then

then it stops working.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 605567] Re: Extremely slow painting of launchpad.net bug details page with nvidia driver

2011-09-22 Thread Cas
Just thought I would expand on Ahmad's workaround.

As it is only icon-sprites that cause the slowdown, the quickest
solution was to disable all icon-sprites with an AdblockPlus filter for
bug.launchpad.net:

||bugs.launchpad.net/+icing/*/icon-sprites

However I wanted to still keep some of useful bug icons so instead I
added the following to userContent.css in
~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/chrome/ so that the most frequent but
unnecessary icon-sprites were disabled.

@-moz-document domain(bugs.launchpad.net) {
.person {background-image: none !important;}
.team {background-image: none !important;}
.add {background-image: none !important;}
.download-icon {background-image: none !important;}
.bug {background-image: none !important;}
}

Title:
Extremely slow painting of launchpad.net bug details page with nvidia
  driver

Status in The Mozilla Firefox Browser:
  Confirmed
Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: firefox

Launchpad.net bug detail pages are painted extremely slowly by Firefox
on my machine. I'm running Ubuntu Lucid 64-bit, and I have the
proprietary nvidia driver (from the Ubuntu repositories) installed,
version current. The machine has two 8800 GTX GPU's with 768 MB
each, so the available graphics power should not be a problem.

It takes many seconds (sometimes tens of seconds) to draw the page,
during which the entire computer slows to a crawl. Nothing happens on
the screen during this time. Whenever I scroll the page up so that
more of the page is revealed at the top of the screen, this is painted
extremely slowly as well. Scrolling down (once the page is fully
painted) does not produce slow-downs, so the problem appears to be
with the content at the top of the page.

It appears to be an interaction between Firefox, Launchpad.net and the
proprietary NVidia driver. I don't notice slowdowns like this on any
other web page (including other launchpad.net pages). Other browsers,
such as Chrome, draw Launchpad bug detail pages with lighting speed.
And when I use the nv or nouveau drivers the problem does not appear
  either.

Since Chrome can paint the pages at fast speeds, Firefox should be
able to as well, so I still think this is a Firefox problem.

If there is any way I can determine exactly what it is that is taking
so much time and slowing down the entire computer, please let me know!
Or if there is any other way in which I can help debug this problem.
