[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1253546] [NEW] Screensaver doesn't come on at login screen
Public bug reported: I have discovered that the screen-saver doesn't ever come on (i.e. to blank the screen) while the computer is sitting at the login screen. I have googled and found various methods of changing display settings for the login screen, such as background wallpaper, although many of these apply to older versions of Ubuntu. The most relevant thing I found was instructions for using running gconf-editor as lightdm user, and editing unity-greeter settings. However there were no unity-greeter settings that I could see to control screen-dimming. The screen-saver is an important energy-saving feature. HUD uses the Alt key to pop up. When trying to switch keyboard layouts, the HUD comes up. The HUD gains key input, and the keyboard layout does not change. A user needs to press Alt+Shift again to actually switch layouts, then press Esc to close the HUD. In terms of usability, it is extremely annoying and unusable. While Alt + anykey can be filtered and does not activate the HUD, Alt + modifier key (such as Shift) is not filtered and activates the HUD. The default shortcut to switch keyboard layouts for Greek, Arabic and Russian (and possibly other scripts), involves the Alt key. Because Windows have the default shortcut Alt+Shift, the majority of scripts accept as a default the Alt+Shift shortcut. Therefore, this is a big issue that must be solved before 12.04. In Unity we have an icon for each GVolume so if we have a USB pen drive (the GDrive) with two or more partitions (the GVolumes) in the launcher will be shown two or more partitions. You could say: «Well, where is the problem?» You are right but if the GVolume belongs to a GDrive in each quicklist we show Open, Eject, Safely Remove... So we have two or more Eject, Safely Remove for just one GDrive! So if we click on Eject and/or Safely Remove all GVolume icons associated to GDrive disappear. === Desired solution: - We represent each GVolume independently in the launcher if they belong to the same GDrive, - The quicklist for each volume contains an Eject parent drive and/or Safely Remove parent drive option. After the user moves the select off it's opening position, spread delay should be shortened. This change is because a longer spread delay is only required for the initial item to allow the user time to scan the items in alt-tab without being disrupted. The spread delay on all other item can be shorter, which should give a more responsive feel. -- Note from User Testing: In user testing, participants did not find the spread because they moved between applications too quickly. When I pointed out the spread to them, they commented that the delay was too long. Power users said that it would be faster for them to find what they were looking for without the spread. One example is: 1. When a window opens on the smaller display (1440x900), it is sized to (I guess) fit in the other one (1600x1050). This means that every time I have to find a visible corner (or drag one into view with alt+click), set the cursor on it (difficult job with a touchpad, the cursor doesn't snap to edges as well as I'd like) and resize. Desired Solution: - A window should never open into a state where any part of the window is off the display into which it is opened (all four sides of the window must always be visible on the monitor where it was opened). The exception is fixed size windows, or windows that have minimum heights or widths, these windows should fit on to the display into which they are opened when possible. It's a simple colored layer placed above stuff, with some nice blur to makes things more readable but it carries all the issues of washing out the resultant color of the dash, making it less crisp and vibrant. A nice trick is to play with the underlying background windows (the damage area/pixmap taken from Compiz), blend them with colors, and place the resultant below the dash. The steps are these: 1) Take the underlying pixmap 2) Blend this pixmap with a tweaked average color using OVERLAY operator 3) Blur the pixmap (as we currently do) 4) Put this new obtained pixmap below the dash 5) At this point, the dash could be just a solid dark layer even with a lower opacity We might tweak the steps further, but the essential bits will remain the same because what will make the big difference is the blending described in step 2, that we are not doing now. ~~~ ORIGINAL BUG (FIXED Cimi): The background of the BFB, Workspace Switcher, Lens, and Trash launcher icons tiles need to use a higher saturation of the average background colour of the wallpaper. Currently the colour is not as prominent as shown in the design, compare the attached image unity_desktop_24_06_11_02.png to the current implementation (when using the default wallpaper). In the exact visual effect we are trying to achieve the colour takes on much more prominence. I'm assuming that this was done so that the user may switch between two applications quickly without bringing the launcher up by tapping Alt+Tab and releasing before the 150ms is up, so I'm attaching a patch that lowers this to 50ms, which appears to be a good compromise for me, from my testing. Personally, I've found in my own daily use that when switching to the next application, I prefer to know what I'm switching to before letting go of Alt, which makes the current behaviour very annoying. So annoying that I've almost exclusively switched to task-switching with the ring switcher and scale switcher. This replaces the old default, which would switch through windows on the current workspace only. The omission of the ability to switch between windows only on the current workspace removes some core functionality of workspaces. It creates impracticalities for using workspaces in a keyboard-driven workflow. I will illustrate these below. For this discussion I presume that the user has more than one window on some or all workspaces, since otherwise much of the point of workspaces becomes moot. Previous keyboard driven alt-tab workflow: User moves to relevant workspace with ctrl-alt-[arrow]. They alt-tab to select the desired window on that workspace. If the user has grouped windows together on a workspace because they want to use them together, for example a word processor and some open PDFs, switching quickly between them while typing is straightforward and fast. If they tab to the wrong window it will gain focus and they will quickly tab to the new one. Keyboard driven workflow using new alt-tab: Ctrl-alt-[arrow] becomes redundant, since alt-tab will take the user to whichever workspace the application is on, so the user is no longer directly using the spacial workspace concept. Alt-tab may take longer to navigate because it contains all windows on all workspaces. Switching between windows intentionally grouped onto one workspace becomes more laborious because there are many erroneous windows. Furthermore, if the user accidentally selects the wrong window it can be quite dizzying since they are unexpectedly whisked away to another workspace, then back again when they select the right one. This raises the question: why use the spacial concept of workspaces at all, when the window must be selected from a single long list anyway? The solution is to add a new shortcut for cycling between windows on a single workspace (and without grouping them by application). That is, the old behavior but on a new key combination. I propose that the most elegant keybinding for this would be ctrl-alt- tab, because this links well with the keys for moving between workspaces, enabling a smooth flow for selecting a workspace and then a window on it. Proposed ctrl-alt-tab workflow: User moves to relevant workspace with ctrl-alt-[arrow]. Continuing to hold ctr-alt down, they may use tab to select the desired window on that workspace. Moving between windows intentionally grouped onto a workspace is again fast and efficient. Desired Solution: - In 12.04, by default Alt-tab should only switch between windows on the currently visible workspace (or workspaces in the case of multiple monitors). As part of the 12.04 upgrade process, SUPER+D should be mapped to 'minimise all windows' so that this shortcut works on both computers that are upgraded as well as on fresh installs. Desired solution: - Ensure that all of the keyboard shortcuts detailed in the following google doc work on all computers that are upgraded to 12.04 (in addition to working on fresh installs). If a existing keyboard shortcut setting conflicts with one of the shortcuts detailed here, the existing keyboard shortcut should be overwritten. However where there is no conflict between the existing keyboard shortcuts and the new shortcuts, the existing shortcuts should always be preserved.
