This is not a shadow bug. It's either a bug in the graphical login
manager, or X, or a terminal driver. Please re-open if it is still
relevant.

** Package changed: shadow (Ubuntu) => lightdm (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: lightdm (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Incomplete

Title:
  Fails writing with Caps Lock

Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  On Ubuntu 16.04:

When clicking on the following 3 keyboard keys simultaneously:
  Left-CTRL + Left-ALT + F1
Then you get to a textual terminal (CLI) where you can type commands.
But there is a problem when typing English letters with Caps Lock turned on:
Instead of English capital letters - you see squares,
so actually you can't login to your user that way
if the username/password has Capital letters.

The only method which allows you to write capital English letters
is to simultaneously click Left-Shift + 'a letter'.
That is the only method that works well.

Note that the Caps Lock key works well with the graphical terminal (pseudo /
pts)
that appears on Ubuntu when hitting simultaneously:
  Left-CTRL + Left-ALT + T

  ---

I assumed the bug report is relevant to "shadow" package because that
the "/bin/login" binary comes from that package.
Package version of 'shadow' is: 1:4.2-3.1ubuntu5

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1770233] Re: Login package changes MIN_UID in /etc/login.defs -> AccountsService/GDM then ignores existing user (UID 501) -> starts gnome-inital-setup to create user

Title:
  Login package changes MIN_UID in /etc/login.defs ->
AccountsService/GDM then ignores existing user (UID 501) -> starts
  gnome-inital-setup to create user

Status in gnome-initial-setup package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
On May 8. 2018 I was prompted to upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04.

The upgrade went smooth except that the installer asked me if it could
make changes to /etc/login.defs. I thought it was supposed to not ask
questions (and stall the upgrade if I was away from the computer), but
I pressed yes and it continued. I pressed yes since I had not
personally modified this file as far as I can remember and was not
  particularly attached to its contents.

After reboot gnome-initial-setup wants me to create a new user. There
is no (obvious) way to login with my old user, but Ctrl+Alt+F2 luckily
worked---I could log in and all my files where still there. I tried
  changing UID_MIN in /etc/login.defs back to 500 from 1000 (I believe
this was the change I was prompted about), but I still could not login
graphically, so the /etc/login.defs change may have been unconnected
  to the bug.

I was able to figure out that the offending program was called gnome-
initial-setup and an "apt purge gnome-initial-setup" later I could log
in as normal. I do not believe an average user could have figured this
out (how many even know about the virtual terminals Ctrl+Alt+FX?).

Thanks for reporting this bug. This looks to be a bug with either

it to lightdm.

Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I installed xubuntu in my Windows box using the latest VBOX (6.0). It
installed perfectly however after I log in the screen kind of freezes.
I see the background however the icons and title bar do not appear.
Also mouse inputs like right click do not work. Function keys do not
  work either like alt F2.

Xubuntu system is updated and the guest addons are installed.

I have tried disbling the 3d acceleration however that did not work.

The only way I can get this to load the icons is to go to Devices ->
Insert Guest Additions CD Image. Once I click on Insert Guest
Additions the icons and title bar load and everything works fine.

I checked online for solutions but have not found any that work.

This also seems to be a problem with other versions of Ubuntu and
  other Linux distributions.

  1. impact: kvm crashes
  2. Development fix: don't allow attempts to set_bit to negative offsets
  3. Stable fix: same as development fix
  4. Test case (see below)
  5. Regression potential: if the patch is wrong, graphics for vmware vga over
vnc could get messed up
  =

12.04's qemu-kvm has been unstable for me and Marc Deslauriers and I
figured out it has something to do with the interaction of qemu-kvm,
unity and the vmvga driver. This is a regression over qemu-kvm in
  11.10.

  TEST CASE:
  1. start a VM that uses unity (eg, 11.04, 11.10 or 12.04). My tests use
unity-2d on an amd64 host and amd64 guests
  2. on 11.04 and 11.10, open empathy via the messaging indicator and click
'Chat'. On 12.04, open empathy via the messaging indicator and click 'Chat',
close the empathy wizard, move the empathy window over the unity luancher (so
it autohides), then do 'ctrl+alt+t' to open a terminal

When the launcher tries to auto(un)hide, qemu-kvm dies with this:
  [10574.958149] do_general_protection: 132 callbacks suppressed
  [10574.958154] kvm[13192] general protection ip:7fab9680ea0f sp:74440148
error:0 in qemu-system-x86_64[7fab966c4000+2c9000]

  Relevant libvirt xml:
  video
    model type='vmvga' vram='9216' heads='1'/
    address type='pci' domain='0x' bus='0x00' slot='0x02'
function='0x0'/
  /video

If I change to using 'cirrus', then qemu-kvm no longer crashes. Eg:
  video
    model type='cirrus' vram='9216' heads='1'/
    alias name='video0'/
    address type='pci' domain='0x' bus='0x00' slot='0x02'
function='0x0'/
  /video

The workaround is therefore to use the cirrus driver instead of vmvga,
however being able to kill qemu-kvm in this manner is not ideal. Also,
unfortunately unity-2d does not run with with cirrus driver under
11.04, so the security and SRU teams are unable to properly test
updates in GUI applications under unity when using the current 12.04
  qemu-kvm.

I tried to report this via apport, but apport complained about a CRC
  error, so I could not.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1270452] Re: Lenovo T440 Touchpad needs custom config

2014-08-04 Thread Serge Hallyn
It would help to detail exactly which aspect you consider unusable. (I
think you have a menu of options :)

For me it was the fact that palmdetect was not working. Therefore I
currently use this in .config/upstart/touchpad.conf:

description Configure the Hellpad
author Serge Hallyn serge.hal...@ubuntu.com

#start on starting xsession-init
start on desktop-start
stop on desktop-end

task
script
synclient TapButton3=2
synclient ClickFinger3=2
synclient AreaTopEdge=3500
end script

This disables the top half of the touchpad so that I can type without
the mouse moving/clicking. That was the 'unusable' part for me. (It
also activiates 3-finger click for middle button). The top part of the
pad still works as clickpad, and bottom still works as mouseclick-only.

It's not ideal, but it is usable.

(Note that the 'start on' is not ideal, sometimes it runs before
syndaemon is running, so tha tneeds to be tuned, or the job needs to
just sleep until syndaemon is running).

Bug description:
The new all-touch (similiar to Macbooks) touchpad of the Lenovo
Thinkpad T440 is hardly usable out of the box.

  A workaround is explained here:
  http://who-t.blogspot.de/2013/12/lenovo-t440-touchpad-button.html

However, this solution still isn't perfect :(

Bug description:
With trusty, /bin/ping relies on having extended attributes and kernel
capabilities to gain the cap_net_raw+p capability. This allows
  removing the suid bit.

However, the tarball cloud images do not preserve the extended
attributes, and thus /bin/ping does not work on a system derived from
  them.

  Summary of problem per package:
   * lxc: ubuntu cloud template needs to extract
   * download template needs to extract with xattr flags
   * server side download creation tools need xattr flags
   * [unconfirmed] tarball caches need creation and extraction with xattr flags
   * tar: need the '--xattr' and '--acl' flags backported
   * maas: uec2roottgz needs to use xattr/acl flags
   * curtin: extraction needs to use xattr/acl flags.
   * cloud-image-build: needs to create -root.tar.gz with xattr/acl flags

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1313550] Re: ping does not work as a normal user on trusty tarball cloud images.

2014-04-28 Thread Serge Hallyn
Unfortunately src/xattrs.c is wholly non-existent in the precise
version. So backporting xattr support would include src/xattr.{c,h} as
well as inserting the calls to functions defined there throughout the
rest of the code. Unfortunately that doesn't seem SRU-able. The safest
way forward would be to take 1.27 into precise (which I assume is also
not sru-able)

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1313550] Re: ping does not work as a normal user on trusty tarball cloud images.

2014-04-28 Thread Serge Hallyn
Quoting Scott Moser (smo...@ubuntu.com):
 Serge,
I don't see why new files would make something non-SRU-able.

A new file by itself would be nice as it's self-contained. It's
particularly adding the new calls that would seem protentially
problematic.

Anyway if it seems sane I'll post a debdiff at some point hopefully
tomorrow. But given the importance of tar in general (meaning, if
there were regressions in 1.27 in trusty we would know about them)
I think backporting 1.27 to precise seems more sane than cherrypicking
something very intrusive and hoping we don't get weird side effects
or subtle bugs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 910058] Re: gtk-vnc is unusable slow compared to tightvncviewer

2014-04-15 Thread Serge Hallyn
Do you see this only with windows guests? (I dont' have access to those
right now) Is there a linux distribution/release with which you can
reproduce this (both slow with new package and fast with old)?

Bug description:
  Ubuntu Precise with all updates

  xtightvncviewer: 1.3.9-6.2
  qemu-kvm: 1.0+noroms-0ubuntu2
Virtual guest with Windows 7 32bit

When using Qemu-kvm to virtualize guests the virt-viewer and vinagre (both
based on gtk-vnc) are very slow.
The first drawing of a desktop of 1024x768 takes about 5 seconds. The mouse
behaves very sluggish and you can actually move the mouse faster than
displayed. When the physical mouse movement stopped the mouse pointer will
still be moving for several seconds.

Using vncviewer from the xtightvncviewer package does not have this
problem. The initial screen is drawn in less than a second. The mouse
  movement is fast.

Unfortunately xtightvncviewer is no alternative, since the keymaps
  are not mapped correctly.

Bug description:
  - as I have already told disks are still running and vent is going on
max speed, there is no option to go back and I have to make force
  turn off

  - I have also noticed that screen brightness goes on maximum brightness after
few minutes. (If I set brightness on some mid level and then I leave computer
alone for few minutes and it dimms-out a screen for sake of battery saving,
when I move my mouse screen brightness set is suddenly again at max level)

  - It seems to me that most drivers works as they should (I have ASUS N53SV
laptop and most of fn functions are alive - e.g. button fn+ENTER(that comes
with numerical part) = open calc and other useless combinations, extra buttons
for mute, and loudnes works, my laptops webcam is alive, sistem info sees all 4
cores and 8 threads..)
-I don't know if that is linked with hibernation and suspend problems but
my touchpad mouse stops working very often - in most cases when I have mouse
cursor placed on terminal and then I run something (for example apt-get
commands or compiling something or running my own programs)
-another thing that I also don't know if its connecting with (but I also
don't know if there is a problem at all..) - clock speed of my processor should
go up if cores are busy - and now I don't know if that works only when all
cores are at 100% or it also woks independently - if self-overclocking works
independently then it doesn't works under my ubuntu.

Title:
computer fails to fully wake after suspend, requiring full power cycle
  to resurrect

Status in “pm-utils” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
If I select Suspend from the Power menu, my computer suspends as
  expected.

When subsequently pressing the Power button on the front of the
computer to wake it, the computer's hard disks power up but the
monitor (and hence the computer in full) does not.

A press of the hardware Reset button on the computer appears to make
the computer reset, but the computer does not subsequently progress to
the BIOS POST screen--at this time, it hangs/freezes in the same
manner as when first being woken from suspension. It is actually
necessary to hold down the Power button such that the computer is
forced to switch off fully, and then turn it on again.

/var/log/pm-suspend.log (attached) makes reference to the suspend
being performed, but doesn't appear to report anything else after
going into suspension. I don't know what other log files may be
relevant, but am more than happy to provide any that are deemed to be.

Title:
pm-hibernate dies if parent dies upon wake

Status in “pm-utils” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
By-the-book behaviour of pm-hibernate/-suspend may cause issues.

The issue: when waking up, the hooks that were run before sleeping /
suspending are executed in reverse order as explained on the man page.
When such a hook (accidently) kills the parent process which triggered
pm-hibernate/-suspend in the first place, this child process in the
shape of pm-action is killed alongside the parent (regardless of sudo
  invocation or not).

A possible solution would be to daemonize the script after wakeup by
the kernel so that init inherits it and can forget about it after pm-
  action exits.

First observed on a stock Precise / Oneiric 64 bit installation.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1) Write a hook that calls initctl to restart a service as non-root
  2) Have this service execute pm-hibernate.
  3) Watch pm-action terminate in pm-functions when parent process dies due to
service restart in hook invocation.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 910058] Re: gtk-vnc is unusable slow compared to tightvncviewer

2014-04-07 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks for reporting this bug. I've personally not seen this.

Would you be able to bisect this using git://git.gnome.org/gtk-vnc?
Something like

git clone git://git.gnome.org/gtk-vnc
git clone
git bisect bad
git co v0.3.10
git bisect good

 importance: medium

** Changed in: gtk-vnc (Ubuntu)

An inelegant workaround I found out by myself (after vain searches in the
newsgroups) is:
  1. switch to terminal 1 (ctrl+alt+F1) - black screen again
  2. switch back to X (ctrl+alt+F7) - the lcd comes alive

Note: terminals from 1 to 6 are always mute (black screen), even
before suspending, but at least tty1 is working, according to blind-
typing commands effects. Maybe this is another bug anyway...

fails in Ubuntu 10.4 with all updates applied to date, but only when

  standby is initiated.

  I'm using a Dell Latitude X1 with a Transcend 4GB disk inserted. If I
remove or unmount the media before going into standby, the system will
  standby and resume without problems.

A workaround is provided in the referenced report, but this is clumsy
and inadequate. Please consider implementing a workaround in the core
  standby routine.

The system should standby and resume without any workaround and
without on resume launching the drive as if it had just been inserted.

Several things can occur when the lid is closed. It can either:

  a) Not suspend and remain awake
  b) Suspend, but on resume, gives a black screen with colored lines on the edge
  c) Stays on the black screen on resume

b has happened a lot to where I have to switch to a tty shell and kill X to
restart it.
Unsure if this is related, but I also use a port replicator with a second
monitor attached and this happens mostly after detaching from the base.

When suspending the laptop via pm-suspend, it suspends successfully.
Waking it up for the first time works, everything goes well. On the
next suspend it wakes up immediately. Looks like it goes down
successful again (since the fan of the gpu stops), but then simply
  wakes up normally without delay.

Tried this three times (reboots between): The first suspend works, the
  next ones do not.

How to debug this further? Any suggestions?

I installed pm-utils, then ran sudo pm-hibernate, which simply made

A workaround seems to be to edit the file /etc/pm/config.d/defaults (create
if it doesn't exist), then add the line...
  HIBERNATE_MODE=shutdown
...and after this, sudo pm-hibernate successfully hibernates the system.

To make this change integrated with the desktop (make hibernate appear in the
menus) you edit a policykit file, following the highest-voted solution at...
  http://askubuntu.com/questions/94754/how-to-enable-hibernation

...and after a restart there should be new options and you should be
able to use them within the power management routines of Ubuntu (Gnome

defaults,nodiratime,noatime,sync,dirsync,user,exec 0 0

the last line is my external disk.

But the problem is that, this disk doesn't seem to be umount properly,
and when I resume, it mount as another device again automatically,
then I can find more than one devices mount at the mount point.
Although I can use it as normal, but when I need to umount it, the
program shows umount: it seems /home/upsuper/external is mounted
multiple times. So what's the problem?

And excuse me for my poor English...

I have two screens, an internal Dell Latitude X1 and an external Dell
2405FPW. Both screens are switched on, and the external monitor is
connected to the VGA output of the X1.

Using display preferences, I have switched off the external display,
  using just the internal display.

When suspending by closing the lid, the external display is briefly
activated and the internal display deactivated. The machine then goes
to standby, which deactivates both displays. After resuming, the
desktop appears on the external display, while the internal display is
switched off. This behaviour is _not_ expected. I'd expect Ubuntu to
  respect my display configuration.

This is _not_ an issue when suspending via pm-suspend. It is also not
an issue when I change the lid action from suspend to e.g. blank
screen and then close the lid.

I am facing the following problem:
After hibernating my notebook (amilo m7440) I have difficulties with resuming.
  Sometime almost everything works fine.
In about 10% it doesn't. When I try resuming the following happens:
After pressing the power button the notebook turns on with a black screen.
Only a few seconds later the fan turns of and the lights under the screen
indicate, that the notebook has turned to suspend to ram.

From this point there are 2 different ways the thing can continue.
Sometimes everything works fine by pressing the power button (so, it is like
a resume from an immediate suspend to ram);
In the other cases I have to repeat the procedure several times.

After being back on the desktop the following error message is shown:
An unknown error has occured while suspend to ram. Error code is '1'..

Hoping to find any log entries I have checked syslog and Xorg.0.log.
Both of them didn't gave me a hint for my problem.

  I am using Kubuntu 9.04.

  sudo lsb_release -rd says
  Description: Ubuntu 9.04
  Release: 9.04

I have attached a screenshot of the original error message.
Regretfully it is in german, but I have provided the translation for
  the message above.

Let me know which additional information is needed to get the neck of
  the problem.

Suspend failure unformatted hard drive , no partition table either

Status in “pm-utils” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Second unformatted drive , without partition table cause suspend to
fail(brand new drive) .
2 disks total , one mounted for the root filesystem, one unformatted new
drive.
  Effects : 8.10 , 9.04 (don't know about 8.04 but I am pretty sure it does
also).

Work around : create partition table for drive, suspend works fine after
that, does not to be formatted , just needs a partition table.
Correction : This might be a misbehaving hard drive. The dmesg output shows
the sata link failing on the drive. The drive is new but I just bought two new
ones from a different company(seagate). I will see what happens.

Note: Just wanted to pass this on such that hopefully somebody else if
they run into the problem they will find this bug report.

Since I upgraded my laptop (Acer Aspire 5633 WLMi) to Karmic I have noticed a
strange problem: suspend works flawlessy, but hibernate has a problem it didn't
have with Jaunty: the keyboard stops working after resume.
If I connect a USB keyboard it works fine and I can log off, and in the login
screen the laptop's keyboard works, and continues to work also after login.
It's unresponsive from resume untill I log off.

  Normally the following happens:

0) the screen goes black.
1) The screen is restored and I see the pm-hibernate in the xterm but it
hasn't finished yet.
2) The screen blanks again.
3) The machine is now hibernated.

About one time in 3 or 4 pm-hibernate terminates afte step 1) above

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: pm-utils

I want a script to be executed when my laptop is connected to AC and another
one when it runs on battery.
For the beginning it should just do

  On AC:
  echo max_performance | tee
/sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy

  On battery:
  echo min_power | tee /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy

I decided to create two scripts in /etc/laptop-mode/batt-stop/ and
/etc/laptop-mode/batt-start
but they where sometimes executed and sometimes not. I thought this is
strange, maybe laptop-mode-tools is buggy and I investigated an alternative
approach.

There are two files in /etc/acpi/events/ :
  ac and battery
  both call /etc/acpi/power.sh
  which in return calls pm-powersave

man powersave tells me there are two directories
  /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/ and
  /etc/pm/power.d/

the later has priority but was empty on my installation,
  so I went to /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/

I created my own file here, called my-powersave

  /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/ lsl
  total 28K
  drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4,0K 2009-10-24 20:34 .
  drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4,0K 2009-10-21 05:34 ..
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1,4K 2009-10-06 23:41 95hdparm-apm
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 646 2009-09-17 21:33 anacron
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 293 2009-10-07 01:02 laptop-mode
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 248 2009-10-24 20:36 my-powersave
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 693 2009-10-06 23:41 sched-powersave

This worked, BUT again the sata link sometimes stayed at max_performance in
battery power.
It worked most of the time if you have not done anything when removing the
power and it hardly ever worked when you disconnect and reconnect in short 5
second intervals.

I think there is an underlying bug in pm-utils or acpi.
I would happily provide needed logfiles or debug output if you tell me which.

Resuming from suspend sometimes causes instant suspend upon hitting

Status in “pm-utils” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

Upon resuming and hitting the lock screen dialog, the computer will
*sometimes* suspend. I can see the dialog for maybe a second (it
flashes on the screen.) If I am fast enough, I can type in three
characters of my password before it suspends. Upon resuming from the
immediate suspend I can log in fine. This seems to be much more
prevalent if I have left my laptop suspended for longer, and occurs
about one in five times, so it seems to me to be some kind of timing
  issue.

Conjecture/Ramble: Perhaps, upon resume, the laptop still thinks the
lid is closed and decides to suspend. This might explain why it
happens more often if the laptop has been in suspend for longer,
because more background tasks are catching up (often, upon resume,
there is a lot of HDD activity for about 10 seconds), and
preventing/delaying a poll of the lid switch. In which case there
should be a patch which prevents the system suspending within ~10
seconds of the last resume, or prioritises the lid switch polling.

Otherwise, apart from this minor niggle, suspend/resume works very
  well and is quite fast.

netbook is idle and o battery, +36 in 25 min. A simple calculation
would give a rather high number of 86.4/h. I know this was supposed to
be fixed some time ago, but it's reappeared.

  Hi all,

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, fully updated as of yesterday.

When I tell the computer to suspend sometimes (but not all the time),
the screen goes black (but keeps the backlight on) and is
unrecoverable save for using a hard restart. When it does suspend,
which is about 75% of the time that it is used, everything works as
expected; no problems resuming from successful suspend.

Everything worked fine in 9.10. This is a clean install of the desktop
  version.

My computer is a dell studio desktop.

  all best.

When I close my laptop lid, it will go into suspended mode as I want,
however, when I open the laptop lid and it resumes the display will be
completely wrong. The display is completely scrambled and somewhat
'static like'. There is no response from the keyboard or mouse as far
as I can tell. I am unable to switch to any of the terminals via
Ctrl-F1-6 and am forced to do a reset by holding down on the power
  button.

To make sure that this was not a hardware issue, I booted into my windows 7
installation and similarly closed the laptop lid, allowed to suspend and
reopened it and the display was perfectly fine. I repeated this a couple of
times and found that the display issue only occurred in the Ubuntu installation.

Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS pm-hibernate broken on P400 SmartArray RAID on

Status in “pm-utils” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: pm-utils

Stock Lucid desktop or server AMD64 (released ~2010/04/28) installed
on DL180G5 and DL160G5. No special BIOS settings, no special flags
passed to the kernel beyond what the Lucid installer sets up.

DL160G5 has SATA disks on motherboard controller. /dev/sda3 is the
  swap partition seen by Linux.

DL180G5 has a P400 SmartArray RAID controller. Two SATA disks in a
RAID1 configuration. /dev/cciss/c0d0p2 is the swap partition seen by
  Linux.

There is a iLO100 IPMI card (with graphic display support) on the
DL180G5, whereas the DL160G5 has the onboard IPMI card (only serial
  console).

In case of DL160G5, Gnome menu invoking pm-hibernate works fine (but
silently --- a status message while storing and loading RAM contents
  would be nicer).

In case of DL180G5, the graphic screen goes back to text mode, a
cursor blinks in the north-west, and after every 120 seconds, we get a
warning of the pm-hibernate task being blocked for more than 120
  seconds.

I also tried to install and run uswsusp on the DL180G5. In this case
s2disk successfully consults /dev/snapshot, compacts memory, and then
gets stuck as it is about to write out the RAM contents. It stays
stuck at 0% progress for ever.

Is there established wisdom that pm-hibernate and uswsusp do not work
with SmartArray RAID controllers? How can I diagnose what's really
  going on?

Title:
cdrw not considered by the hal-polling hook

Status in “pm-utils” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: pm-utils

the hal-cd-polling hook script should disable the polling mechanism
for the optic units. It doesn't work on my sony vaio. In particular
the problem is in the following lines of the script:

  local disks=$(for c in /dev/cd/*; do readlink -f $c; done |sort |uniq)
  [ $disks ] || exit $NA

In my installation I don't have any devices in /dev/cd/. I have two
  sym-links to the effective device.

  $ ls -la /dev/cd*
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2010-10-02 12:20 /dev/cdrom - sr0
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2010-10-02 12:20 /dev/cdrw - sr0

This behavior could be fixed, for example, in this way:

  local disks=$(for c in /dev/cd/* /dev/cdr*; do readlink -f $c; done
|sort |uniq)
  [ $disks ] || exit $NA

Bug description:
As reported in Bug 307312 by Victor Lowther:

  ===
Please move the 95anacron and 96laptop-mode hooks out of the 90 - 99
range. See HOWTO.hooks for the ordering convention.

Also, action_wpa should have a numeric prefix -- right now it will run
after NetworkManager has gone to sleep, interfaces possibly taken down,
and network card driver modules unloaded. Needless to say, that might
affect the functioning of the hook.
  ===

  The documented convention is:

00 - 49: user and (most) package supplied hooks.
If your hook assumes that all of the usual services and userspace
infrastructure is still running, it should be here.

  50 - 74: service-handling hooks.
If you need to stop or start a service, you should have a hook in this range.

  75 - 89: module and non-core hardware handling.
If you need to load/unload a module, or mess with some non-video related
hardware that would otherwise break suspend or hibernate, the hook that
does that should be in this range.

90 - 99: reserved for critical suspend hooks.
The hooks in this range should not be messed with unless you know what
you are doing. They start with 90chvt and end with 99video

after half a minute or so, the laptop gets powered down, but when I power it

Today the laptop just power down itself after these messages in the console.
One time, X worked, but plasma in KDE did not work and only mouse and not
keyboard worked. I had to reboot system. Please, could you solve this problem?
Nowadays it is impossible to hibernate this laptop. The hardware:

I'm not sure which package this falls into but pm appears to be the
closest. After hibernating and returning the computer goes back into
hibernation seconds after I have returned to the desktop. Bringing it
back up again then works and the computer does not re-hibernate. This
happens every time. I've yet to determine whether it depends on
whether I press the PWR-button on the case or use the menu and whether
it depends on for how long the computer was in hibernation.

Note: What happens is that it actually re-hibernates, not suspends -
which could have been caused by the pm-daemon going into auto-suspend
because its timer told it so.

It takes too much time (~60 seconds) to resume the battery. If I take down
the battery and only use the AC power, it takes only a few seconds to wake up
my laptop.

Bug description:

open the file pm/power.d/harddrive and look at the variables
DRIVE_ACOUSTIC_MGMT_*
  DRIVE_ACOUSTIC_MGMT_AC=${DRIVE_ACOUSTIC_MGMT_AC:-0}
  DRIVE_ACOUSTIC_MGMT_BAT=${DRIVE_ACOUSTIC_MGMT_BAT:-254}

if you read the help at line 48, it says:
  Drive acoustic management:
DRIVE_ACOUSTIC_MGMT_AC = Drive Acoustic Management value on AC
Defaults to 254 for max head speed.
DRIVE_ACOUSTIC_MGMT_BAT = Drive Acoustic Management value on battery
Defaults to 128 for max quietness.

So either the help or the default values must be changed.
I think that the problem is in default values

Title:
can use the desktop some seconds before login

Status in “pm-utils” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Hi

I usually suspend my desktop session by closing the lit of my laptop
without logout. When I open it again ubuntu go back from sleep and ask
me my password I recover my desktop.

  What happen :
I can sometimes see my desktop a few (milli)seconds before the system ask me
my password.
I thought it was only a quick display but the last time I didn't pay
attention and started using that desktop and it asked me for the password only
a few seconds after. I had been able to quickly launch a search on firefox
(firefox was already open on my session) before login. I didn't had time to see
the result of my search but after login I saw that the request was sent and saw
the result.

  What should happen :
Going back from sleep I should not see the previous user's desktop before and
in no way I should be able to *use* his session before login. Ubuntu/Gnome/X11
should ask for login immediatly and not with some latency.

Why this is a problem :
If i leave a program opened, one could see my mails or my current private
work. If the wake up is slow like last time, it could even delete my mails or
do something on my behalf.
I am hesitating if I should flag it as a security vulnerability. I did not
because it is only local and may be very difficult to exploit. However it is
probably a serious privacy problem.

  Config :
I am using the last stable (ubuntu 10.4) with up to date security fixes, and
a standard gnome desktop. Not sure if it has any consequences but we are often
two users loggued in with this laptop, using the fast user switching applet.
I don't know which package is responsible for all this stuff but if you name
me something I will give you any version/configuration details you may find
usefull.

IBM thinkpad X31 suspend/hibernate don't work in lucid

Status in “pm-utils” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: pm-utils

  Hello,
after I trigger suspend or hibernate from menu, display goes off and LED
starts blinking (indicate suspend/hibernate in progress) as usually, but this
LED will not stop and system remains frozen. Because fan starts in a while, it
must be some CPU operations there which locks the OS, because nothing (any key
combination) brings the system to live again - so only way is hard stop with
power button.

After reboot ext3 needs to repair orphan inodes and also after gnome
login, networking is disabled (in network-manager).

Same thing will happen with hibernate (but this never worked good for me -
since my first ubuntu 7.04).
Suspend worked fine in most of previous versions of ubuntu (I never
reinstalled, only upgraded).

I tried some things (newer kernel from ppa - 2.6.34 and .35, add
nomodeset parameter to kernel, changes in /etc/default/acpi-config,
  uswsusp) but with no luck.

I attach pm-suspend.log which however seems ok. If needed more, tell me.

  Laptop suspend works only once

Status in “pm-utils” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
My suspend only works once per boot. This means i can successfully suspend
and resume, but if I try to suspend again without rebooting/shutdown the
suspend process hangs.
I looked at /var/log/pm-suspend.log and it seems to me, that the kernel fails
to suspend, because all the related acpi-helper scripts execute succesfully. I
have attached a tarball with both logfiles.

The problem were already present in 9.10 but I thought I simply
destroyed something. But it's still present in a clean 10.04
installation . I have to admit that I really can't remember when it
first occured but I suspect it was introduced by an update.

The problem DOES NOT occure if I shut down X and start /etc/acpi/sleep.sh on
text console.
Please let me now if you need more information
