[Register] Allyship workshop for open source communities

2021-08-20 Thread Aizhamal Nurmamat kyzy
Hi everyone,

I am helping to organize an allyship training for open source contributors
sponsored by Google's OSPO. Few folks have expressed interest in this
workshop, so I am extending the invite to all of you.

Workshop date: Thursday, September 16th, 2021 at 8:30am PST or 5:30 PM
CEST.
Please register by filling out the form linked below[1]

Here are more details:

The training led by Dr. Kim Tran (https://www.kimtranphd.com/) aims to
position people of color and those in solidarity with us to develop the
necessary skills to build bridges across race, ability, gender, sexuality
and class.

Participants will leave:
- With the capacity to identify marginalization in real time in the open
source community
- Knowing how to address and respond to marginalization at individual and
systemic levels
- With a strong, critical understanding of the allyship framework
- Intersectional lenses, examining dynamics around gender, class, ability
and race
- A toolkit for recognizing and combating marginalization in real time

Format:
- Large groups will engage in a *90 minute*, remote learning session.
- Participants will be capped at 45 to enable engaging interactive
participation and responsiveness to participant questions and concerns.
- Session will include webinar style portion as well as breakouts for
hypothetical scenarios.

Re: ACNA Hackathon - Volunteer(s) needed

2019-05-28 Thread Aizhamal Nurmamat kyzy
Hi Rich,

We are doing a contributor's workshop for Beam in the upcoming summit in
Europe, but most of the content should be easily adjustable to any Apache
projects. For example, instead of subscribing to dev@beam.a.o. we can teach
them how to subscribe to dev@community.a.o. Introduction to ICLA, Jira,
GitHub and other similar tools and processes should be the same across all
projects. WDYT Austin?

Hi Sharan,

We plan to prepare ideas list for at least 2 Apache projects, in particular
for Airflow, Beam and possibly Spark. I am sure there are other projects
that would like to participate, therefore I’m wondering whether 2 tech
writers will be enough? Can we ask for more?

I’m happy to chat further to figure out what’s the best course of action.

Non-committer contributor as mentor for Season of Docs?

2019-03-19 Thread Aizhamal Nurmamat kyzy
Hello everyone,

I was wondering, what the ASF thinks about non-committers to the projects
to be mentors for Season of Docs [1]?

The SoD requires 2 mentors. I am looking to support Airflow in the SoD, and
I was wondering if the ASF would be okay if I partnered with a committer to
mentor a tech writer to participate in the project.

The reasoning behind is:

   -

Some projects may not have enough committers who can volunteer for this
   particular project
   -

But, those projects would greatly benefit from having a dedicated tech
writer for at least 3 months to improve their documentation
   -

Projects may have non-committer contributors who know about docs
(information architecture/documentation for open source), but not
necessarily be committers in the project

Please let me know what are your thoughts on this.

Thanks,

Aizhamal

This looks like a great opportunity to improve docs for many Apache
projects :)

Best ways to reach out ASF community to participate in research?

2019-02-01 Thread Aizhamal Nurmamat kyzy
Hello everybody!

Gris Cuevas, Riona MacNamara and I are kicking-off a research that explores
how members of open source software projects use documentation and
contribute their work back to the project.

We will need 1 hour remote interviews with community members who use oss
projects (code/documentation) as part of their jobs. These people are going
to be tech practitioners such as: developers, software engineers, devops
engineers, data engineers, data scientists, etc.

We were wondering if anyone has suggestions on the *best ways to extend the
invite for Apache community members to participate in the research.* Should
we ask for participation in the dev@community mailing list or are there
other recommended channels?

Thanks everyone in advance!

Contributing an updated slide deck

2019-01-21 Thread Aizhamal Nurmamat kyzy
Hello everyone,

I recently shared a slide deck with an introduction to "The Apache Way" in
this mailing list. I've got some very valuable feedback from community
members, and I have incorporated some into the slides. The updated deck is
here:

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/183nXPAxpJymQBOYOt1FnFaahRcQskIvOyIvHRC6UAnE/edit#slide=id.p

The material is intended to be used by anyone for their presentations. I am
not a committer, but I was wondering if it would be of decent enough
quality to be included in the slides section[2]? If it is, is there a
committer in this group that could help me do that change?

Thanks to everyone for your help and feedback!
-A.

Thank you Phil for taking time to review the slides and providing such a
thorough feedback!

This is incredibly insightful -- I can definitely see the room for
improvement and clarifications. I will try and improve the slides and
speaker notes based on your feedback.

I have a few questions, which I've left inline:

Ah thanks! This was the main struggle for me to put together, because I
couldn't come up with a clear list of basic principles. I found The Six
Principles[1] in the ASF website as core beliefs, but not much else was
written about them. Also, the same page refers to meritocracy as a basic
principle[2]. I think Community, Meritocracy and Transparency really
capture the philosophy of the Apache Way. I will change that slide to
include all these as top-level principles.

Perhaps I'll propose an update to the Philosophy section[1] of ASF website,
that presents these three as the basic principles to avoid confusion. Does
that sound fine to everyone?

Page 12 - I don't like the little check boxes limiting what

I think these are good points. The intention of this slide is not to
present it as a hard truth, but more as a general guideline, and especially
to highlight that the PMC is ultimately accountable to the Board if any
legal/governance issues arise, and they are in charge of discussing private
matters such as new committers, and critical security bugs.

To express that, I think it may be useful to replace the "X"-marks with
"maybe", and give a detailed explanation in the speaker notes. How does
this sound?

This is true. I agree that explaining why is not necessary. My idea was to
encourage people to set appropriate expectations about their involvement.
Perhaps replace that with "Be considerate: Set appropriate expectations
about your involvement". How does that sound?

That's a good point as well. I was trying to give some tips for
participating and contributing to a project in each role in a day-to-day
basis. I will rephrase the tips, and add some more detailed explanations in
the speaker notes.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate all the feedback! : )

2018-12-18 Thread Aizhamal Nurmamat kyzy
Hello everyone!

My name is Aizhamal and I joined the Open Source Strategy team at Google
Cloud. I will work with Gris Cuevas (g...@apache.org) on two main projects:

   -

New Contributor Experience - I’ll develop resources that will help
improve the onboarding experience of anyone who wants to contribute to an
Apache project for the first time
   -

Open Source Documentation - I’ll develop resources related to best
practices for documentation in Open Source projects

Our team’s objective is to help new contributors become familiar with the
ASF, and help them be good citizens of the projects that they participate
in. With this we hope to support projects to develop a healthy Open Source
culture.

Our first contribution is this slide deck [1]
<https://s.apache.org/apache-way-for-everyone> with an introduction to The
Apache Way. We are aware it’s not the first presentation on this topic, but
we made it as a visual tool for presentation or self-study, so we’ve made
sure to have complete and detailed speaker notes for anyone to use.

If missed anything important, or misinterpreted some concept, I would
greatly appreciate your feedback.

In our plan, we also want to study how different projects implement The
Apache Way within their communities, e.g., customs and etiquette,
communication channels they use, PRs and code reviews, etc. We plan to
produce some material from that and share with the Apache community.

Thanks for your time, I am very excited to become part of this great
community!

Wishing you all wonderful holidays :)

Aizhamal
