 Daniel,
As previously discussed on the OSCON thread, I have the big honkin 8x8 wall
banner. Please give me your address and I'll send it to you.
Thanks,~M

Having this info is very useful for booth duty, job fairs, etc that the
ASF participates in. The hope is that we can keep the info on this page
up to date in order to make life easier for organizers of such events.
Trevor will be handing off some stuff to me tomorrow which I will
inventory as an example.

So... do you have some stuff? If so, it would be terrific if you can
edit this page or just reply here and I will make the edits for you:

Re: Fwd: Non-profit Exhibitor at OSCON

2018-04-22 Thread Melissa Warnkin
Thanks, KAM. I need all the good karma (and prayers!) I can get!! ;) Dad had a
really bad day yesterday and we ended up back in the ER; thankfully, he was
released after four hours and has been doing better last night and today. I
still have to do his dialysis and everything, but he's better today than
yesterday. I pray and hold my breath every time I have to take his sugar level!
<,deep breath!>
Anyway, enough about that...NOW...I know you were gone from us for awhile with
health issues, but come on...I didn't know you were unable to walk, talk, or
see. What the what?!?! Thank God you are better! Yea, this is all new to me, so
I need to find a caregiver group to join, along with other support groups to
help me with all of the different issues I'm facing with being the caregiver
for BOTH of my parents! I do have a representative from "Visiting Nurses" (or
whatever they're called) coming on Tuesday to speak with me about how they can
help with dad. So, that's a start.
I'm so glad you're better. Big hugs.

with support groups which are more collective bitch sessions but it might
be nice to know others have similar issues.

Any pointers in particular? The only folks I could think to ask are Sharan (who

I haven't seen an update about GOTO Con Chicago regarding materials (will

[VOLUNTEERS NEEDED] for Apache Booth at All Things Open

2017-10-15 Thread Melissa Warnkin
Hey all,
Is anyone going to be attending ATO and available to set up/break down the
booth? Spend some time at the booth?
The set up is on Sunday, October 22nd, from 12 - 6 and requires about 30
minutes of your time. There will be our 8'x8' wall banner that you have to
unpack and assemble, the pop-up banner, the table skirt that goes on the table
(duh! ;) ), and swag to put on the table.
The breakdown is on Tuesday, October 24th, from 3 - 6.  This also requires
about 30 minutes. Disassemble the banners and repackage them, fold the table
skirt and repackage. Any leftover swag can be taken home with you or donated
locally.
I will take care of all of the paperwork; all you have to do is unpack/repack.
If anyone is available to assist, please let me know.
Event details here - https://allthingsopen.org/
October 23, 24, in Raleigh, NC
Thank you so much! Have a great rest of your day/weekend!

LAST CALL for travel assistance applications to ApacheCon Miami!!

2017-03-02 Thread Melissa Warnkin
Hi all!!,
This is a reminder that the travel assistance applications for ApacheCon NA
2017 will close on March 8th!
TAC exists to help those that would like to attend ApacheCon events, but are
unable to do so for financial reasons. For more info on this years applications
and qualifying criteria, please visit the TAC website at <
http://www.apache.org/travel/ >.
ApacheCon NA is split into two separate themed events - Apache Big Data  and
ApacheCon.  There will be a hackathon and BarCamp on either end of the main
conference; therefore, the Apache Travel Assistance Committee will only be
accepting applications from those people that are able to attend all week.
Applicants have until March 8th to submit their applications (which should
contain as much supporting material as required to efficiently and accurately
process their request), this will enable TAC to announce successful awards
shortly afterwards.
We look forward to greeting many of you in Miami, Florida in May!
Kind Regards,
~Melissa

Ooohhh I like the core values idea. I don't put many stickers on my laptop,
I'd put all the ASF core values on my laptop. Right now I have "Powered by
Apache" and the Microsoft Ninja Cat on a Fire breathing Dragon (I keep trying
to figure out if I'm a Ninja cat taming the dragon or part of the Dragon using
it's might to empower the Ninja cats - disclaimer I work at MS which was a
surprise to many a few years back).

Hi,

I'm actually not sure this is the right place to drop this random idea of mine,
so feel free to forward/ redirect/ ignore.

I remember the poster with our project logos being very helpful at FOSDEM.
After receiving stickers with short messages on team leadership principles
recently I started wondering if in addition to our feather stickers it might
make sense to print some with our core values + the feather.

Maybe I'm not the only one who would like to see stuff like "community over
code", "what didn't happen on list didn't happen" on laptops in the wild? Iirc
we had the community thingy embedded on a larger sticker on the past already.

The dates are, as shown on the website, May 16-18

The Traffic Server event -
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/apachecon-north-america/extend-the-experience/ats-summit
- is on the Sunday and Monday before. Everything else is May 16-18.

The website is correct.

I expect that if you are there the evening before, there will be lots of
people there to hang out with, but there's nothing *official* planned.
Likewise for the day after.

ApacheCon NA 2017 Travel Assistance Applications Now Open!!

2017-01-23 Thread Melissa Warnkin
Hello Fellow Apache Enthusiasts!!
The Travel Assistance Committee (TAC) are pleased to announce that travel
assistance applications for ApacheCon NA 2017 are now open!
We will be supporting ApacheCon NA, Miami, Florida, USA, May 16th - 18th, 2017.
TAC exists to help those that would like to attend ApacheCon events, but are
unable to do so for financial reasons. For more info on this years applications
and qualifying criteria, please visit the TAC website at <
http://www.apache.org/travel/ >. Applications are already open, so don't delay!

ApacheCon NA is split into two separate themed events - Apache Big Data  and
ApacheCon.  There will be a hackathon and BarCamp on either end of the main
conference; therefore, the Apache Travel Assistance Committee will only be
accepting applications from those people that are able to attend all week.
Important: Applications close on Wednesday, March 8, 2017.
Applicants have until the closing date above to submit their applications
(which should contain as much supporting material as required to efficiently
and accurately process their request), this will enable TAC to announce
successful awards shortly afterwards.
As usual, TAC expects to deal with a range of applications from a diverse range
of backgrounds; therefore, we encourage (as always) anyone thinking about
sending in an application to do so ASAP.  We look forward to greeting many of
you in Miami, Florida in March, 2017!
Kind Regards,
~Melissa

Hi people

The question is in the subject: It would just be interesting. Ok, many
people allready know, I have a physical disability called ICP (Infantile
cerebral palsy). I just want to know, if there are others.

I think, ASF could be a chance for disabled people to get work. The
model of the ASF is perfect for this. You can get in without having any
diplom or reference. Here everyone can get the chance.

This pin is very nice looking. Wow. I am definitely going to get some!!

PS: While I understand the feather logo, I am not sure the general public
(even my immediate family) will be able to recognize what it represents. I
can imagine many people asking what does that mean? If you ever spend more
time designing others, can you please consider branding "The Apache
Software Foundation" somewhere? Either to the sides, multiple lines, etc.
-- whatever you see fit in your artistic discretion.

Again, great hobby, great art, and thank you for your efforts.

Cheers,

Re: Help with task: Help ensure our events calendar is up to date and complete

2016-05-02 Thread Melissa Warnkin
Hi April,
Thank you for your email.  Please see below and let us know if you have any
questions.
Helping out here is easy and is a task that can be dipped into periodically.

Take a look at http://comdev1-us-west.apache.org/events/, this is an
application we use to gather information for
http://www.apache.org/events/meetups.html

It's an automated process that will result in false positives at times. To
remove the false positives we can do two things:

1) Mark a specific event as "not applicable" - which removes this one event
2) Mark an organizing group as "not applicable" - which prevents any future
events organized by the same group appearing

To help with this process all we need is people to visit the page periodically
and click the appropriate link on the right hand side.  The more people we have
doing this the easier it is for all of us.

Moving forwards we need to improve the code driving this application. If you'd
like to work with the code see http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/comdev/tools
(hopefully what you need to get started is in readme.md)

Hello Uli + team ComDev --I hope you are all well.

A quick heads-up that I was contacted by Luke Han [1], who is seeking to find
ways to help him spread the word about Apache in China.

I pointed him to the ComDev pages, and he's interested in translating them, as
well as possibly posting some entries on blogs.apache.org that can serve as
resources for the region (and elsewhere as appropriate).

So my questions are:

1) any objections to the translation of http://community.apache.org/

2) I presume we'll work with Infra to have a link to the localized pages (IIRC,
https://translate.apache.org/may be terminated/discontinued?)

3) if the above is acceptable, are you OK with specific, non-English, blog
entries being posted about the concepts/topics in community.apache.org?

Thanks so much for this!

Greetings Apache Incubator and Apache Community,

Thanks for posting this event.  I'd like to update the text in the calendar
entry since we have more information available now.

New recommended text:

The first ever Geode Summit for Apache Geode is happening March 9 in Palo
Alto, CA.
We've posted numerous sessions by users and developers of the technology
at: http://geodesummit.com/
Advanced registration discount is $49, and this expires Feb 29.

We are still accepting a few sessions. Speakers attend for free.

2016-02-17 Thread Melissa Warnkin
Harald,
That was kind of harsh and unnecessary! We receive lots of inquiries about the
GSoC program, and we are here to answer those inquiries in a kind, helpful way
in order to encourage involvement in this program!!
Tuhin,
Thank you for your inquiry about the GSoC program.  Uli Stark (copied here) has
been heading up this program and will be able to answer your questions.

Hi, I don't know why you are writing us, has there been someone who told
you so?

Please, learn about the GSoC programm first! Before the organizations
aren't selected, there is no point in inquiring about it. Later, those who
are selected, will have guidelines how to apply. Simple as that! :-)

Hello,

I'm a community member and active contributor of an Apache project and I'd
like to volunteer to be a GSoC mentor this year. However, I'm not currently
an ASF committer or member.

I'd like to clarify if GSoC mentoring is strictly restricted to ASF
committers or can non-committers also volunteer to be mentors or co-mentors?

ps: I'm sending to this list as I didn't find a clear answer on
https://community.apache.org/guide-to-being-a-mentor.html.

Thanks,

Re: Help Wanted! (it's a title, not a request!)

2016-02-11 Thread Melissa Warnkin
Hi Roman,
Thank you for participating in hackillinois and facilitating student
contributions to the ASF projects! Super cool!!
Sooo...I got to thinking (I knooow...that's always dangerous!!), while you're
there please spread the word about ApacheCon and TAC; we're trying to encourage
more students to apply for TAC, so this is a perfect opportunity!! Although it
won't be beneficial for this ApacheCon, it would still be helpful to spread the
word!
Detailed information on the Travel Assistance can be found here:
http://apache.org/travel/
Details on how to apply for travel assistance can be found here:
http://apache.org/travel/#applying.
The TAC would very much appreciate it if you could spread the word.
Thanks, Roman, and have a fantastic day!

Hi!

I wanted to amplify Ross' concerns, but I wasn't sure how to cast
it in an actionable way. As the luck would have it -- now I do. So
here's what I'm struggling with: as many of you should know by
now there's a live event schedule for Feb 19-21:
    http://hackillinois.org/opensource
    https://hackillinois.org/

Think of it as Google Summer of Code, but done live and on a much
more compressed schedule. I got invited there to help facilitate student
contributions to the ASF projects. I have a wide exposure to at least
Big Data ASF ecosystem so I can guide them through the basics and
I can help with mechanics of contributing to ASF. That's all good.

The only thing I can NOT do all by myself is figure out how different
ASF communities would like to leverage this free labor (and hopefully
build lasting relationships with some of these students). My thought was
to do what we typically do for GSoC -- reach out to all these communities
and suggest that they either tell me how to get the list of 'low hanging fruit'
JIRAs/ideas or suggest they tag the ones they would like me to offer
to students with 'hackillinois2016' tag. Pretty easy hand off.

Now with the http://helpwanted.a.o/entering the picture how do you suggest
I frame this ask I was about to send out today?

Thanks,
Roman.

My experience has always been that if you don't assign/schedule hours,
then it'll end up being one or two people that staff the entire event,
with everyone else assuming someone else had it covered. And, yes, that
has happened to me at FOSDEM as much as anywhere else. There's always 6
other places to be, and if someone isn't on a schedule, they have
nothing to tie them to it.

Re: Could Apache Flink PMCs requests some ASF swags like stickers or frisbee for Flink Forward event?

2015-09-23 Thread Melissa Warnkin
Thanks, Sally.  Hey, Henry!
Yea, it's too late for me to ship anything out for Flink Forward as I leave
tomorrow for ApacheCon; however, as Sally mentioned, hit me up at the booth
near the end of the week and you can take all of the Apache gear that I have
left over!

Hello Henry --thanks so much for your note.
Indeed, I *used* to manage the swag process, but this is now handled by Melissa
and now comes from the ComDev budget.
If you don't need Flink-specific items, you're more than welcome to take
whatever you'd like during ApacheCon. No doubt Melissa will be happy to not
have to ship items back to the US ;-)
Should you need Flink items, we can print "Powered By Apache Flink" stickers,
for example, as long as the art is forwarded to Melissa in time for production.
To that end, I've copied both Melissa and ComDev here to keep them in the loop.
Thanks in advance, Melissa, for following up with Henry regarding next steps!

HI Sally,

Hope things are going well with you.

I am wondering if you are the right person to ask about this =)

There will be Flink Forward [1] conference this October in Berlin that
celebrates everything about Apache Flink and some of the PMCs will be
attending.

We were wondering if there is a way to get some ASF branded swags to
distribute them to Flink Forward attendees?

There will be ApacheCon Core and Big Data in Budapest, so maybe some
of us could pick the swags there if possible?

Thanks,

- Henry

Subject:[ASSISTANCE NEEDED] for OSCON

Good evening and Happy Friday!!
Due to medical reasons, I am unable to attend OSCON and "woman the booth";
therefore,  I am in need of someone that can replace me as the booth
coordinator.
Crucial dates:
Exhibitor Move-in:  Monday, July 20th, from 8:00 - 5:00; Tuesday, the 21st,
from 8:00 - Noon
Expo Hall Hours:  Tuesday, the 21st, from 5:00 - 6:00 for the opening
reception; Wednesday, the 22nd, from 10:00 am - 4:30 and the booth crawl is
from 5:40 - 7:00.
Exhibitor Move-out:  Thursday, the 23rd, from 5:00 - 9:00pm; Friday, the 24th,
from 8:00 - Noon
Job responsibility:
   - Set up and tear down the booth (an hour (tops) of work, if that, on both
ends)

   - Keep the table supplied with the giveaways (all boxes will be in the
booth, so all you have to do is open them and set the items on the counter! And
this year I have a new hanging banner to replace the honking 8'x8' monster wall
banner that took two people to assemble!!)

   - Coordinate with the others that have volunteered their time to assist with
booth duty so that someone is at the booth at all times
   - Mingle, network, and have fun!!!
   - Eat, drink, and be merry!

What's in it for you, you might ask?!:
   - The pleasure of replacing me! ;) LOL
   - If you agree to be the coordinator and fulfill the roles as described
above, The ASF will cover your travel and expenses, which also includes the
hotel and expo hall registration, which allows you to attend all the evening
events and lunches.
Please get back to me with your interest ASAP so that I can make the necessary
arrangements.  Local folks strongly preferred (naturally) due to the lateness
of this notice, and this offer does not apply to International folks (sorry -
you all know that I love you, but we can't justify that expense!).
Your help is greatly appreciated.  I was just informed yesterday that I have to
go in for surgery on the 22nd, hence the very late notice.
I already have several folks lined up for booth duty; however, they are
attending OSCON with their day job, and so their main responsiblities are with
their companies.
Please get back to me ASAP if you are able to help!!
Thank you so much!
~M

ApacheCon Europe dates incorrect in a "10times.com" article

2015-06-03 Thread Melissa Warnkin
Hey everyone,
My sister did a google search on ApacheCon, and the first result (on her
machine, anyway) that popped up was from 10times.com.  She brought it to my
attention that there are two sets of dates reflected in that announcement.
Now, while I don't know who wrote this article, or if we need to make any
changes, I at least wanted to bring it to ya'lls attention.

Copied from the article:
"The APACHECON Europe, organized by the The Linux Foundation will take place
from 28th September to the 1st October 2015 at the Corinthia Hotel Budapest in
Budapest, Hungary. ...
The Developers, Programmers, Committers and Users Driving This Innovation and
Utilizing These Tools Will Meet in Budapest, November 17-21, for Collaboration,
Education and Community Building."
Have a great day everyone!

Turns out it was an over-eager corp. marketing that
used sources unrelated to ACNA to figure out "who may
be interested in Geode" (whatever that means).

Apologies for the noise, my initial thought was exactly
along the lines of Melissa's note: whoever got scanned
(which in my mind would be a totally fair game). I now
confirmed it wasn't that.

Once again -- apologies. I tried to make it as clear
as possible that this is NOT cool. I really hope it
doesn't happen again (although we will scan your

Thanks,

Hi Jan,
Both good questions!
It is also showing incorrect information for ApacheCon NA 2015; it reflects
it's being held in May.

Hi

Is it comDev that manages the calendar on people.a.o ?

I have 2 questions:
- Can we please have apacheCON EU added (I cannot find a description how to
do it).
- Why does it not refer to our comDev calendar ?

thanks in advance for any information.

I am having a problem.

Because the background image in the ACEU14 set is all JPEG with no way to take
it apart, I looked at the others on SourceForge.  They each have problem,
especially with the name and location of the conference being bolted into the
feather images as combined raster/JPEG images.

So I come back to the one from nick:

 1. The feather and typography about the conference are beautiful to me.

 2. It is designed for a dark background and that matters these days.

 3. The name of the conference is a slight problem because "North America"
cannot fit in the style used for "Europe".

THE KEY PROBLEM

There are three versions of the background, varying where the logo goes and
some small details.

The problem is that the three versions are each single JPEG files.  That is,
the
logo, and other components of each background are not separable components.

WHAT I NEED

If Nick has original graphics in which these are separated, especially vector
graphics except for the building and overall background image that I will
replace anyhow, I can move ahead quickly.

If not I am seriously stuck.  Morphing the jpegs directly strikes me as a
Waiting to Fail.  I would rather fail now, though I have no great Plan B.  And
I love Nick's feather image.

I assume that is what I am working on.  I am adapting ACEU 2014 for ACNA 2015

I assume that any IP issue is solved when the image is replaced.

I'm also assuming, based on silence, that this template was used and none had a

If there is a particular place to upload it, I need to know about that too.

We're just looking for a template that has the logo, says ApacheCon

Always first weekend of February, always in Brussels at the ULB
(http://www.ulb.ac.be/) It is a two day (Sat, Sun) event, but there are
numerous events that orbit it, both before and after, both in Brussels
and in surrounding cities, so it is a VERY high-bandwidth time to be in
the area.

Upwards of 4000 geeks in attendance. Very community focused (as opposed
to the corporate focus of may events like OSCON) and one of the oldest
free software events in the world - may be the oldest. Event is free.
And there are always lots of ASF people in attendance, although not
usually wearing their Apache 'hats'.

What is needed in order for it to be scheduled? Is there something I need to do
myself, or is that a committee thing? I didn't see anything on the LF website
that let me request a scheduling time.

Once this is fixed and listed on the website I'll mention it on oo-dev and
elsewhere.

I have taken the liberty of making banners for ACEU14 and pushing them

GSoC Mentors - need a volunteer to speak w/Cat Allman from Google

2014-06-25 Thread Melissa Warnkin
GSoC Community:

Are there any GSoC mentors available next Wednesday at 9:30AM Pacific to jump
on a call with Upayavira, Ross, myself and Cat Allman from Google? She would
like to talk to past Apache GSoC mentors about their projects and experiences
with the GSoC program.

Having the opportunity of providing your experience to the folks responsible
for this program at Google is a great way of showing them the impact their
sponsorship of GSoC has on the students!!

Please let me know who is available to share with us your success stories, and
I will have Cat forward the call information.

Thank you so much

Re: Apache@ OSCON question

2014-06-20 Thread Melissa Warnkin
Hi Kay, Hi Andrea!!

You are correct - OSCON officially kicks off in one month!! WooHoo!!

I can make room on the table for pins.  When you refer to leaflet and roll-up
designs, what is that and how much real estate would they take up? I cannot
confirm that I can accommodate those items without first knowing how much room
they would take.  I know you can understand and appreciate that.

At this time, I cannot confirm whether or not I will be able to provide
complimentary expo hall passes; however, I do have an email out to my contact,
but he has not responded as of yet.  There is a discount code for 20% off by
entering this code at registration:  IHEARTASF.

Please let me know about the leaflet and roll-ups so I can determine if I can
accommodate those items.

Thank you so much,
~M

OK. OSCON is only about a month out. So, if we decided to bring
anything, it would likely have to be from what we have available now. But...

... I have a question of Melissa. If anyone from OpenOffice attended to
help at the booth, would they need to pay an exhibitor registration fee?
Given the current state of of the OSCON conf site, I have no way of
determining what this amount might be.

Hi Kay,

What kind of project giveaways are you thinking of? Let me know - I'll be more
than happy to accommodate this if I can.  Please be sure to contact brand
management if approval is needed!!!

As Ross mentioned, I'm the primary booth staffer, but there are always a
handful of volunteers that help at the booth (staffing during breaks/lunch and
help with the setup/teardown).  Shane will be my sidekick at the booth this
year.  If you or others from your project will be attending OSCON and would
like to be present at the booth at a specific time to talk to the attendees,
just let me know.  We could always send out a broadcast via social media about
"stop by the ASF's booth at XXX to speak with the reps from Project XXX".  That
goes for the other projects as well!!

It's always great to have someone from the community at the booth to answer
technical questions!!

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Have a great day - speak soon,

~Melissa

We have foundation giveaways but generally not specific projects (the table
isn't big enough;-)

Usually we just have Melissa staff it and answer general questions about
the ASF. Wherever possible she connects people asking about specific
projects to attendees at the conference.

In theory we could be more organized giving specific projects a time slot
for example. But we would someone to help Melissa manage this.

If there is something you would like to do let us know.

Jan, thank you for your email! Yes indeed - Jan has graciously volunteered to
be the "European Hub"; however, we were basically talking in terms of stickers,
promotional material, etc.  We did not specifically talk about the "EITB".

Nick - I had estimated the weight to be approximately 81 lbs.  Keep in mind,
this is purely an estimate since I do not have the materials on hand!! The size
of the case is 51x24x10, and IIRC the case alone weighs approx 20-25 lbs.

Could you clarify how big the box is set to be, and how heavy it's likely
to be? That might influence if we're able to rustle up an EU box volunteer
before budget time!

I haven't been able to find any record of any approval for any of the
Hadoop Summits.  I checked Hadoop PMC mailing list, trademarks, concom as
well as general searches of all mailing lists.

There is one mention of Hadoop World asking permission to do "the same
thing as last year".  No record of approval of branding, however.

Presumably this means that these conferences have been approved off-line
somehow.  That seems a little exceptional, however.
