Just to avoid any confusion, ALC is not about the committers monthly meetup.
ALC is a local group of Apache enthusiast (It is not mandatory to have
committers to form an ALC chapter, if they are present, it will be helpful
for that ALC chapter).

Following is the role of ALC
-- Spread the awareness on Apache in the local community.
-- Share the details about ASF, The Apache Way, and various Apache's
projects in local students, developers, and the business community.
-- Bring together project users and developers
-- Host various events for local open source lovers (at least should have
one monthly event, based on activeness on volunteers the frequency of
events can be increased).
In this event, ALC will spread the awareness of all the aspects of Apache,
also can have technical sessions on various Apache Projects (basically can
do anything to support 3 points mentioned above).

Apart from this one more advantage of this event will be, it will provide
the platform for committers from different projects (living in
the same town/city) to meet and exchange knowledge, thoughts, and ideas.
So, committers meetup is the *by-product* of the event organized by ALC :)

Awesome, thanks so much for the interest.
Soon, I will start working on documenting all this information, which will
help us in proceeding further and bring the ALC in action.

P.S. Just a thought, let's not hijack this mail thread initiated by Shane
on 'how to list yourself', if you have any more query or thoughts on ALC,
we can continue our discussion about ALC on this thread [1] with subject
line '[Proposal] Apache Local Community' :)

LOL. I've updated the site to point to the new location for README:

  https://events.apache.org/README.txt

There's a script to scrape meetup.com someone can run periodically.
Comdev committers are also welcome to edit the page directly, although I
think it gets (mostly) overwritten by the script. (Sorry, that's the
limit of my knowledge here!)

Website source code is here:

Hi Shane,

This list looks outdated. README about how to update the list gives 404.

Can any Apache Project committer update it? If so, I could update this page
from time to time:
- Once I've shared Apache Ignite meetup link
- and I saw one request to update this list at com.dev list recently.

Note that the ASF's VP of Conferences has a page that will list Meetups
and similar events that are run by Apache projects:

That's another great way to help other people find out about any local

Re: [Proposal] Apache Local Community - how to list yourself

2019-06-29 Thread Dmitriy Pavlov
Hi All,

I appreciate this action started.

My experience related to FOAF files:
I didn't know about local mentors and FOAF until I visited community
development web site. I've tried to add, but that time it didn't work, so I
gave up.

+1 for asking people at Apache Con and
+1 for sending some announce to committers@ to remind people about
existence. I definitely going to try one more time.

In my local area (Russia, Saint-Petersburg, and Moscow) I guess we don't
have too many committers, so I'm not absolutely sure that monthly meetups
could be possible. FOAF for Saint-Petersburg shows 2 committers.

Time to time I speak about How Open Source works and about The Apache Way
in local meetups and conferences, for example here we have ~ 900 people:
https://www.meetup.com/Moscow-Apache-Ignite-Meetup/ But usually, only
30-60 came in person to meet up (users+committers+PMC). I saw other meetups
related to Apache Cassandra.

I definitely would be happy to come to Apache related event and could help
to organize some in Russia.

Sincerely,
Dmitriy Pavlov

The company I do much work for has a large presence in Bangalore, and
regularly connect with those colleagues. Happy to push those connections
to get involved locally (and potentially schedule myself to be out there)
should sufficient interest in that locale.

Hi Claude,

For committers: http://community.zones.apache.org/map.html

I see you in Galway …

Swapnil - putting Apache Locals on a similar map would be super cool.

 Hello team,

Recently, I got the opportunity to explore the possibility of having
 roadshow in India.
During this process, I faced some challenges in contacting the local
 Apache
 people and committers,
these challenges and my previous experiences (with other communities and
 student community)
gives birth to the idea of forming the Apache Local Community (ALC).

ALC will be similar to Google Developer Group [1], Facebook Developer
 Circles [2], Mozilla Reps [3],
you can find the local GDG [4] and Developer Circles [5].

 *What is ALC*
ALC is a local group of Apache (Open Source), enthusiast. Each local
>> group
will be called as ALC chapter.

 *Role of ALC*
-- Spread the awareness on Apache in the local community.
-- Host various events for local open source lovers (at least should

 *How ALC will be formed*
Each town/city will strictly have single ALC chapter.
If ALC chapter doesn't exist in the town, the interested volunteer can
contact ALC committee via form or mail to form it.
An ALC chapter will be led by a community manager.

 *Benefits of ALC*

Currently, it happens the committer of one apache project doesn't know
 much
about the committer from another project (both belongs to the same town

-- Building community, as the Apache maxim "Community Over Code".

These all are very initial ideas if we planned to proceed with this, as

(community manager/lead of ALC chapters), etc.

I am aware of Apache Mentoring Programme [6] and Local Mentors [7], but
 the
ALC is different from this, it is about forming a designated local
 community.

All the inputs and thoughts are highly appreciated.

P.S. ALC is just first word came in my mind, if you think there can be a
better name than ALC, please feel free to discuss.

Re: [Proposal] Apache Local Community - how to list yourself

2019-06-27 Thread Swapnil M Mane
Glad to hear from you Shane, thanks so much for your comments :)

I also feel the same, we need some more publicity for this.
We can share these details on committ...@apache.org list (so in case if any
committer is unaware of it, they will get to know).

Apart from this, I also feel we can smooth the process of registering in
Committers map, here are some initial thoughts. I am not sure about the
feasibility of these items for us.

-- At the time of onboarding new committer in ASF, we can ask do they want
to register themselves in committer map, if yes, we can get required
details (lat/long, etc) from them and generate and commit FOAF file by
ourselves. So no action will be required by the Committer.

-- The current process involved two steps
1. Create a FOAF file [1].
2. Commit the FOAF file to committers SVN repo.
Can we simplify this process, we can create a simple form with details like
the first name, last name, lat/long, etc (all the details we asked in the
form available here [1]).
As the Committer submit this form, automatically behind the scene FOAF file
will be created and committed to SVN repo.
We can make sure this form is accessible to only committers.

If we had a laptop at the table at Apache con we could ask if people are
committers and if so see if they are listed. If not ask if they would
submit the FOAF file.

The Committers map definitely works, however it relies on individual
committers voluntarily listing a location for themselves - the ASF does
not otherwise give out private data about committers. It also hasn't
been well-publicised recently, so I think a lot of committers don't even
know about it. Ideas on 1) how to improve it and 2) how to get other
committers in your project(s) to think about listing themselves are
appreciated.

To list yourself on the map, put a location in a FOAF file and point to
it from the committers SVN repo:

  https://home.apache.org/foaf/index.html

If anyone has improvements to the ComDev website or the Phone
Book/home.apache.org, you can see the website sources to patch:

Re: [Proposal] Apache Local Community

2019-06-27 Thread Swapnil M Mane
Hello Claude,
Thank you for showing your interest.

As per my thoughts, to build ALC, it is not necessary to have committers in
the area (if they are present, it will be good).
If you are *willing* to spread the awareness about ASF, The Apache Way, and
various Apache's projects in local students, developers, and the business
community, it's sufficient.
As you mentioned, you know the community of OS developers, if we share the
details on Apache with them, gradually the interested people will join and
community will be built.
Definitely, the process of building a community will take time, and the
good thing is we are not in a hurry ;-)

Also, as the ALC concept gets popular, the committers of the respective
area will automatically get to know about their local ALC and I am sure
they will be happy to help and join.

As I mentioned,

These all are very initial ideas if we planned to proceed with this,
as a community, we can work details of defining roles and responsibility of
ALC, the process of forming ALC chapters, how the ALC chapters will
function (community manager/lead of ALC chapters), etc.

The nearby Apache people can be found here [1], and Apache Committers map
[2] can also help, but I think, it is not up to date.

Hope these details will help you, I am excited to work together :)

Re: [Proposal] Apache Local Community

2019-06-27 Thread Claude Warren
As a developer in a small city (Galway, IE) I can't think of another Apache
developer in the area. I am certain there must be some and I know of OS
developers that are not Apache devs. Is there a mechanism where by Apache
committers may locate other committers in their area? Without this
capability I don't see how I could build an ALC team. It would be nice if
I could reach out directly to local developers.

However, I am very interested in this idea.

Thanks so much, Austin for showing the interest.

Agree with you on getting things done async/virtual is super important.
It is the soul of Apache, the ALC will not affect the functioning way of
ASF.

[Proposal] Apache Local Community

2019-06-25 Thread Swapnil M Mane
Hello team,

Recently, I got the opportunity to explore the possibility of having
roadshow in India.
During this process, I faced some challenges in contacting the local Apache
people and committers,
these challenges and my previous experiences (with other communities and
student community)
gives birth to the idea of forming the Apache Local Community (ALC).

ALC will be similar to Google Developer Group [1], Facebook Developer
Circles [2], Mozilla Reps [3],
you can find the local GDG [4] and Developer Circles [5].

*What is ALC*
ALC is a local group of Apache (Open Source), enthusiast. Each local group
will be called as ALC chapter.

*Role of ALC*
-- Spread the awareness on Apache in the local community.
-- Host various events for local open source lovers (at least should have
one monthly meetup).
-- Share the details about ASF, The Apache Way, and various Apache's
projects in local students, developers, and the business community.
-- Bring together project users and developers

*How ALC will be formed*
Each town/city will strictly have single ALC chapter.
If ALC chapter doesn't exist in the town, the interested volunteer can
contact ALC committee via form or mail to form it.
An ALC chapter will be led by a community manager.

*Benefits of ALC*
-- We have limited ApacheCon and Roadshow, the ALC will open the doors for
having frequent and small events.
-- It will be a platform for committers from different projects (living in
the same town/city) to meet and exchange knowledge, thoughts, and ideas.
Currently, it happens the committer of one apache project doesn't know much

-- Building community, as the Apache maxim "Community Over Code".

These all are very initial ideas if we planned to proceed with this, as a
community, we can work details of defining roles and responsibility of ALC,
the process of forming ALC chapters, how the ALC chapters will function
(community manager/lead of ALC chapters), etc.

I am aware of Apache Mentoring Programme [6] and Local Mentors [7], but the
ALC is different from this, it is about forming a designated local
community.

All the inputs and thoughts are highly appreciated.

P.S. ALC is just first word came in my mind, if you think there can be a
better name than ALC, please feel free to discuss.
