[Vote] Geronimo Eclipse Plugin (GEP) 3.0-beta-1 RC2

2011-11-29 Thread han hongfang
Hi devs,

Please help to review and vote on the release of Geronimo Eclipse Plugin
(GEP) 3.0-beta-1 RC2.

GEP 3.0-beta-1 supports Geronimo server 3.0-beta-1, 2.2.1, 2.1.7 and
Eclipse Indigo (3.7).

[Known issue]
1. GEP 3.0-beta-1 uses maven-eclipsepde-plugin v1.1, which means it can not
be built successfully on 64bit win7 and 64bit macos. See following JIRAs
for details.
- https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-737 Could not
build GEP3.0 under win7-64bit
- https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-674 Could not
build GEP3.0 under macos-64bit
2. Also, please use maven v2.2.1 to build GEP 3.0-beta-1 as following JIRA
is still open.
- https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-694 Can not build
GEP with maven 3.0

The source code zip is here:
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachegeronimo-271/org/apache/geronimo/devtools/geronimo-eclipse-plugin/3.0-beta-1/geronimo-eclipse-plugin-3.0-beta-1-source-release.zip

The update site zip file is here:

The p2 repo zip file is here:

If you would like to review and/or comment on the release notes, you can
find it here:
http://people.apache.org/builds/geronimo/eclipse/updates/PLUGIN_RELEASE-NOTES-3.0-beta-1.txt

Finally, I've created a Staging Site that can be used to test the update
manager functions of Eclipse (Indigo and helios):
http://people.apache.org/builds/geronimo/eclipse/updates/

The vote will be open for the 72-hour minimum.

Hi Kevan,

Is your mac 32bit or 64bit? GEP 3.0-beta-1 uses maven-eclipsepde-plugin
v1.1, which doesn't include following fix.
- https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-674 Could not
build GEP3.0 under macos-64bit

And what's your maven version? Please use maven 2.2.1 to build GEP
3.0-beta-1 tag since GERONIMODEVTOOLS-694 is still open.
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-694 Can not build
GEP with maven 3.0

I tried but failed to find a machine with mac 32bit os. Anyone has mac 32
bit os? could you please kindly have a try to build

[Vote] Geronimo Eclipse Plugin (GEP) 3.0-beta-1 RC1.

2011-11-17 Thread han hongfang
Hi devs,

Please help to review and vote on the release of Geronimo Eclipse Plugin
(GEP) 3.0-beta-1 RC1.

GEP 3.0-beta-1 supports Geronimo server 3.0-beta-1, 2.2.1, 2.1.7 and
Eclipse Indigo (3.7).

[Known issue] GEP 3.0-beta-1 uses maven-eclipsepde-plugin v1.1, which
means it can not be built successfully on 64bit win7 and 64bit macos. See
following JIRAs for details.
- https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-737 Could not
build GEP3.0 under win7-64bit
- https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-674 Could not

If you would like to review and/or comment on the release notes, you can
find it here:

Finally, I've created a Staging Site that can be used to test the update
manager functions of Eclipse (Indigo and helios):

Re: [Discussion] why does geronimo set org.apache.catalina.STRICT_SERVLET_COMPLIANCE=true?

2011-09-23 Thread han hongfang
Hi devs,

Some update for this topic.

I set org.apache.catalina.STRICT_SERVLET_COMPLIANCE=false (just as the
default value in tomcat), and then run the servlet package of TCK, only two
cases failed.

http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-7.0-doc/config/systemprops.html#Specificationshows
the value of org.apache.catalina.STRICT_SERVLET_COMPLIANCE has effect
on several other properties. Looking into tomcat source code, most of the
properties being effected take the value of
org.apache.catalina.STRICT_SERVLET_COMPLIANCE only if these properties are
NOT explicitly set. By setting the following properties as true,
above-mentioned failed TCK cases pass as well.

org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationContext.GET_RESOURCE_REQUIRE_SLASH=true
org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationDispatcher.WRAP_SAME_OBJECT=true
org.apache.catalina.core.StandardHostValve.ACCESS_SESSION=true
org.apache.catalina.session.StandardSession.ACTIVITY_CHECK=true
org.apache.catalina.session.StandardSession.LAST_ACCESS_AT_START=true

I also tried in jetty v8.0.1.v20110908 and geronimo-jetty trunk, travel
sample runs successfully. Both of them have no homepage access issue (i.e.,
404 error).

Any objection to set org.apache.catalina.STRICT_SERVLET_COMPLIANCE=false in
geronimo tomcat?

[Discussion] why does geronimo set org.apache.catalina.STRICT_SERVLET_COMPLIANCE=true?

2011-09-18 Thread han hongfang
Hi devs,

When I look into the https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-6127, I
notice that in \trunk\plugins\tomcat\tomcat7\src\main\plan\plan.xml,
geronimo sets org.apache.catalina.STRICT_SERVLET_COMPLIANCE=true, but it is
false in tomcat by default. This causes the spring sample travel works well
in tomcat, but has homepage access issue (404 error) in geronimo.

Could somebody give me a hint why geronimo explicitly sets
org.apache.catalina.STRICT_SERVLET_COMPLIANCE as true? Does the default
value false lead to any problem?

Yes, just tested with unicode value in the property file, and
processProperty() can not deal it correctly as java.util.Property does. I'm
going to rewrite with felix properties.

Thanks Jarek for the comments.

I will re-visit the processProperty method regarding unicode and also

Thank you David Blevins.

Geronimo devtool will use the updated xsd file for jaxb model generation,
I'm now more confident with your comment from the openejb expert point of
view. Just wanted to avoid the extra effort to generate the jaxb model again
in case of any further change.

Comitted to trunk.

So far we don't get other feedback on this topic. I suggest that we move a
small step forward, just to update openejb-jar-2.2.xsd to make it up-to-date
with other schema changes, such as geronimo-naming-1.2.xsd (may refer to the

We need the up-to-date openejb-jar-2.2.xsd to solve some problems in
Geronimo devtool.

Re: Does the geronimo devtools have nightly build repository?

2011-06-29 Thread han hongfang
As to the server to serve as snapshot repository, I think we may use
people.apache.org, which currently hosts

GEP staging update site: /www/
people.apache.org/builds/geronimo/eclipse/updates
GEP production update site: /www/
www.apache.org/dist/geronimo/eclipse/updates

we may create a similar folder somewhere on people.apache.org, and then
upload the necessary files into the folder.

The openejb-jar-2.2.xsd comes from latest geronimo server v3.0-snapshot
build under schema folder. To me, I think this xsd file is invalid since for
example, ,
entity-manager-factory-ref can not be found under xmlns:naming="
http://geronimo.apache.org/xml/ns/naming-1.2";. Is this OK?

Another question is, in geronimo v3.0-snapshot, which schema should the
deployment plan openejb-jar.xml comply to? openejb-jar-{versionA}.xsd or
geronimo-openejb-{versionB}.xsd, or even both are OK? and what the value of
{versionA} and {versionB}?

I'm considering to reuse these JAXB objects in Geronimo server adapter v3.0.
Can you point me to the exact xsd file for this JAXB objects? I did a quick
check, and can not find some classes in openejb-jar-2.2.xsd and
geronimo-openejb-2.0.xsd, which come from latest geronimo v3.0-snapshot
build, e.g., AbstractClusteringType. Meanwhile, I plan to put the JAXB
objects of geronimo-openejb-{version}.xsd and openejb-jar-{version}.xsd into
separate package.

Re: Geronimo-specific openejb schema files?

2011-04-17 Thread han hongfang
I have the similar question.

In geronimo server adapter, when a new ejb project created, a file named
openejb-jar.xml is generated, which xsd file should the openejb-jar.xml
complies with, item [1] or item [2]? Currently it complies with
openejb-jar-2.2.xsd in geronimo server adapter v3.0, v2.x, and v1.1. But
reading the xsd files below, seems that geronimo-openejb-2.0 is the superset
of openejb-jar-2.2.xsd.

[1]. geronimo-openejb-2.0.xsd
[2]. openejb-jar-2.2.xsd

openejb-jar-2.2.xsd out-of-date?

2011-04-14 Thread han hongfang
Hi devs,

I got following errors when I tried to generate the jaxbmodel class for
openejb-jar-2.2.xsd using maven-jaxb-plugin:1.1.1. Taking
entity-manager-factory-ref for instance, it can not be found in
geronimo-naming-1.2.xsd.

And xmlns:app="http://geronimo.apache.org/xml/ns/j2ee/application-1.2"; is
still in version 1.2, should it be updated to geronimo-application-2.0.xsd?
BTW, I can not find the xsd file for application-1.2 under

[Discussion] Update a bundle within an EBA

2011-03-15 Thread han hongfang
Hi all,

I would like to hear the comments for the solution proposal for updating a
bundle within an EBA, and the related JIRAs are:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-718 Update a bundle
within an EBA
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-5861 Update a bundle within
an EBA

The point of the JIRA is to ONLY re-deploy the updated bundle in EBA instead
of re-assembling and re-deploying the whole EBA to save the time in the case
that the EBA is huge.

The rough proposal is:
Step 1. update a specified bundle using osgi:update
Step 2. osgi:refresh the other bundles in the EBA to refresh the links to
the updated bundle

This means that the updated bundle will be only in the cache, and in the
following cases the updated bundle will be lost, and the original bundle
included in EBA archive file comes back.
1. Start geronimo server with -clean option
2. Restart EBA application in Admin console -> Application EBAs

This new feature is designed for application development phase to speed up
application testing, and it can be turned off in GEP in case that user wants
to re-deploy the whole EBA with any update.

Any comments on the solution?

Hi Shenghao,

Thank you for your reply. I just figured out the problem.

The eclipse plugin dependency is processed by maven-eclipse-plugin (
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/geronimo/devtools/maven-plugins/trunk/maven-eclipsepde-plugin).
maven-eclipse-plugin will try to find the eclipse plugin dependency in
M2_REPO/eclipse/eclipse/plugins folder, and then install it into
M2_REPO/org/eclipse/plugins for maven.

Since com.ibm.etools.aries.core plugin is not an existing plugin with
eclipse release, so it can not be found in M2_REPO/eclipse/eclipse/plugins.
It leads to the above mentioned problem.

Best regards,
Janet

[Question] Building eclipse plugin with maven

2011-03-02 Thread han hongfang
Hi devs,

I used Aries class (which is in com.ibm.etools.aries.core plugin) in GEP
plugin project org.apache.geronimo.st.v30.core to handle Aries project. I
found com.ibm.etools.aries.core plugin is already in the MANIFEST.MF. Since
this plugin is required during compile phase, I remove the existing
property "resolution:=optional" and leave the version restriction as empty,
But when I issue "mvn clean install" I got following build error.

Any hint on how eclipse plugin dependency is resolved in maven? FYI. All the
other eclipse plugins, which are belonging to eclipse release, in the same
MANIFEST can be successfully resolved without any version restriction.

Re: [Vote] Geronimo Eclipse Plugin 2.2.1 RC2

2011-01-10 Thread han hongfang
Hi Johannes,

Your problem seems weird. IMHO, dependency resolving is
platform-independent. Building succeeded on Windows with clean repo, so it
should be OK on Mac as well. Kevan passed the building on Mac as he
confirmed in previous posting. Maybe the problem is caused by different
configurations on Mac... Using Maven 2.2.1 maybe a good try as Shawn
suggested.

Re: [Vote] Geronimo Eclipse Plugin 2.2.1 RC2

2011-01-06 Thread han hongfang
Kevan,

"Attribute value for Bundle-Version in bundle manifest is incorrect. [Found:
2.2.1] [Expected: 2.2.2]" error in branch v22 is foreseen to me since the
bundle version in manifest can not be updated by maven release plugin from
2.2.1 to 2.2.2. Manual update is required after release completion.

To try the patch of
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-692, we need to apply
it to GEP 221 tag
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/geronimo/devtools/eclipse-plugin/tags/geronimo-eclipse-plugin-2.2.1.
Sorry for not clearly declaring this in advance.

Re: [Vote] Geronimo Eclipse Plugin 2.2.1 RC2

2011-01-05 Thread han hongfang
Johannes,

First of all, thank you for trying the patch on MacOS.

I don't see woodstox:wstx-asl:jar:3.2.1 in any pom of GEP 221. So I think it
is a transitive dependency. Missing of woodstox:wstx-asl:jar:3.2.1 leads to
the failure of collecting other dependencies such as
org.apache.geronimo.framework:geronimo-kernel:jar:2.1.7 which are already in
maven central repo.

I tried applying my patch to a local copy of
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/geronimo/devtools/eclipse-plugin/tags/geronimo-eclipse-plugin-2.2.1,
and then using "mvn clean install" to build GEP 221 with a empty local maven
repository. The build completed successfully. After build completion, I
see woodstox:wstx-asl:jar:3.2.1 in my local maven repository. So I think
maybe you encountered instable network connection or something like that
during the building. BTW, my environment is: Windows XP + SUN JDK1.6.0_20 +
maven 2.2.1.

A workaround is that you may download the jar here:
http://mirrors.ibiblio.org/pub/mirrors/maven/woodstox/jars/wstx-asl-3.2.1.jar,
and then using "mvn install:install-file" command to install it into you
local maven repo. After the installation, try to build GEP 221 again.

I searched in JIRA system, and found that
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-649 (status is

I open another JIRA
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMODEVTOOLS-692 for the build
failure problem on Mac against both branch 21 and 22. Patch is also attached
to correct the package name. But I can not verify if branch v21/v22 can pass
build now, since I can not find a Mac OS.

Shall we go ahead without this fix in GEP221 since it doesn't impact GEP
functions?

I have %HOME%\mavenrc_pre.bat on my machine, which reset MAVEN_OPTS.

Re: Out of memory error when building geronimo

2010-07-05 Thread han hongfang
Thanks Rex. But the same error occur.

Upgrading -Xmx and -XX:MaxPermSize may solve the out of memory problem, but
the point is the environment variable MAVEN_OPTS got changed (from
"-Xmx1024m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m" to "-Xmx512m") during geronimo build, and
my setting doesn't take effect to solve the out of memory.

Is MAVEN_OPTS reset somewhere when building geronimo?

Out of memory error when building geronimo

2010-07-05 Thread han hongfang
 Hi,

I'm trying to build geronimo server trunk with sun jdk 1.6.0_20 on my winXP.
I have this environment variable set.

 MAVEN_OPTS = -Xmx1024m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m

Before issue the build command, I echo this variable in command prompt
window, and I can see the value is exactly what I have set (-Xmx1024m
-XX:MaxPermSize=256m).

Then I issue the build command (i.e., mvn clean install) in the root dir of
trunk, the build gets failed in serveral minutes with error msg indicates
out of memory.

[INFO] Compilation failure
Failure executing javac, but could not parse the error:
The system is out of resources.
Consult the following stack trace for details.
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
 at java.util.ArrayList.newElementArray(Unknown Source)
 at java.util.ArrayList.growAtEnd(Unknown Source)
 at java.util.ArrayList.add(Unknown Source)
 .

When I echo the environment variable again, but its value changes to
"-Xmx512m".

Does somebody know what happened to MAVEN_OPTS? Why its value changes after
build command?

TIA.

Good idea. I'm going to implement this idea soon.

Does anybody has different opinion?

Re:[Discussion] The organization of derby related modules

2009-12-22 Thread han hongfang
Just noticed that the previous statement is not so clear.

derby can not find the class DerbyUserAuthenticator in geronimo-derby,
because geronimo-derby.jar is loaded by system-database, and derby related
jars are loaded by derby, meanwhile system-database declares dependency on
derby, which makes derby is the parent classloader of system-database.

Hi all,

I'm working on https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-4296 and
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-4878. To enable derby user
authentication using user-defined class, I write a new class
DerbyUserAuthenticator
and put it into plugins\system-database\geronimo-derby project.

I encountered ClassNotFoundException when I first ran it, because Derby uses
Class.forName() to load the user-defined class DerbyUserAuthenticator, and
meanwhile geronimo-derby depends on org.apache.geronimo.configs.derby.

I'm wondering why geronimo-derby is served as a module of system-database,
rather than organizing it together with plugins\derby as just what Geronimo
does for plugins\mejb and plugins\axis2 etc, and then making
org.apache.geronimo.configs.derby depend on geronimo-derby.

Does someone have history information to share?

BTW, I work on server branch 2.1
