Let me direct you to the wider dev list. A fine place to start it the list of issues that ought to be fixed for the next release: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MAHOUT/fixforversion/12316364 Work on any of these would be welcome. I have a MS and BS in Computer Science and have been working as a statistical programmer for the past 5 years. My passion lies in studying and analyzing Machine Learning and Data Mining algorithms. I am currently taking the Data Mining Certificate at Stanford. I recently completed the Cloudera Hadoop training for developers. I would like to learn and contribute towards the mahout project developing scalable Machine Learning algorithm using Java. Could you please give me some suggestions on a project that I could start ? Thanks, Neeral

Some general notes on contributing to Mahout: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/MAHOUT/How+To+Contribute The most common way to get involved is by using Mahout for some project you may have and fixing any issues that get in your way, extending the framework where ever it does not yet fit your needs. You should start with those areas that you find most interesting. There have been a few more detailed hints in one of the past e-mail threads: http://tinyurl.com/4gsde5g Isabel
Contributing to Mahout
Hi, During the summer of 2008, I used Mahout for a school project on text classification. I really enjoyed experience. I graduated at the beginning of 2009 and I wasn't able to contribute to Mahout while starting my new job. However, I now feel that I have more time and I would like to contribute. My main reason for contributing would be to participate in a software effort outside my regular day job. I would like to see and work with code, designs and methodology of another group, I feel that it would help me become a better developer. What should I do first? I was not bad at theoretical ML a few years back (while in school), however, I am afraid that most of it is gone. I am sure that I will be able to learn it back, but I would like to start with something that is not to math oriented. I guess adding test coverage would be a start. Any idea? Thanks, Philippe.
Re: Contributing to Mahout
That would be a great start. I will come back in a day or so with more suggestions. On Sat, Jan 15, 2011 at 12:21 PM, Philippe Lamarche philippe.lamar...@gmail.com wrote: I guess adding test coverage would be a start.
contributing to mahout.
Hi, Mahout is an exciting project and I would want to contribute to it. However, I am not sure where to start. Yes, I did go through the contributing FAQ and am still confused. The issue tracking list sometimes seem overwhelming. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. -Muncher.
Re: contributing to mahout.
That is great! The start of contributing is definitely the hardest part. That is what the community should be able to help with. One thing to try is to just start a discussion here on the mailing list about what you are interested in trying to do. From there, we can provide hints about next steps which should look familiar given that you have read the FAQ. At that point, it should be all downhill. (in a good way).
