Key: MAVEN-516
Summary: Simian Plugin (fully documented and ready to use)
   Type: New Feature

 Status: Closed
   Priority: Major
 Resolution: FIXED

 Time Spent: Unknown
  Remaining: 0 minutes

Project: maven
 Components:

   Fix Fors:
 1.0-beta-10
   Versions:

Description:
Simian (http://www.redhillconsulting.com.au/products/simian/index.html ) is a great
little tool that detects duplicate source code. Very much like PMD's CPD
(http://pmd.sourceforge.net/cpd.html), but a _lot_ faster.

I have written a Maven report plugin for Simian that I'd like to contribute to Maven.
Have a look at some sample reports:

http://www.picocontainer.org/simian-report.html
http://www.nanocontainer.org/simian-report.html

It would be really nice to have the Simian Report included in the standard reports, as
it reveals refactoring candidates and is something every sound project should have!

RE: Responsibility - was [RE: Simian Plugin (fully documented and ready to use)\

2003-06-25 Thread Vincent Massol
Hi Ben,

Cool, but why don't you use the Apache Wiki? :-) Actually, I don't
really care which wiki we use but I think it's better to use only one.

Also, I think it is duplicate information from the one found in
project.xml.

Why don't we instead generate a page on
http://maven.apache.org/reference/plugins/ that would extract
 information from the project.xml ?

Also, I'm not convinced yet that there should core plugins versus
non-core plugins. I think all plugins must be viewed equals. Otherwise,
we will not resist the temptation to do some "hacks/shotcuts" such as
the one done in the jar plugin which calls test:test when a jar is
generated. There are other test plugins that would also like to do that
for example. etc

Thanks
-Vincent

Re: Simian Plugin (fully documented and ready to use)

2003-06-25 Thread Brian Ewins
I'm interested in the comments on CPD/Simian performance - since I was
responsible for the current algorithm in CPD. On my dodgy old 833MHz
laptop, CPD does the entire JDK1.4 in about 1 minute 30, all but 18
seconds of which are actually spent reading the files (ok reading the
files and building ANTLR parse trees) - it was I/O bound. I can eat into
those 18 seconds but the rest is out of my hands[1].

For example, here is what happens when you just time the line and
character counts, in native code:
brian [EMAIL PROTECTED] /c/j2sdk1.4.0/src
$ time find . -name '*.java' | xargs wc -l | grep xyzzy [2]

real1m19.289s
user0m1.670s
sys 0m3.791s
Thats 79 seconds just to *count* the chars, and it hardly dented my CPU.
A CPU twice as fast won't make much difference to this.

Have you compared the current CPD with Simian? I did my rewrite when I
saw the times quoted in the O'Reilly article, which is, I guess, when
most people tried it. To quote Tom Copeland "A job that took the old CPD
2 hours now takes 8 seconds. It's pretty sweet." (he's referring to the
time *after* the files are read here)

I am aware of a faster algorithm that can be used incrementally, but I
havent implemented it yet.

-Baz

[1] CPD in its current form would be faster with suffix tree sorts
instead of quicksorts, and if punctuation ( { ; } ) wasn't counted as a
place where matching could begin. It would also be faster if I didn't
use a parse tree, but just heuristics for ignoring comments + whitespace
(I originally wrote my CPD that way, in perl). However none of these
optimizations are considered worthwhile because the whole thing is I/O
bound.
[2] grep xyzzy in this case is just stopping wc -l outputting to
stdout, so that you're not seeing slowdown due to flushes on that stream.

I personally "maintain"/"am active" on the following:

- cactus
- jboss
- war
- ear
- ejb
- pmd
- statcvs
- changes
- checkstyle

I'm also probably going to tackle the aspectj one soon.

Description:
Simian (http://www.redhillconsulting.com.au/products/simian/index.html ) is a great
little tool that detects duplicate source code. Very much like PMD's CPD
(http://pmd.sourceforge.net/cpd.html), but a _lot_ faster.

I have written a Maven report plugin for Simian that I'd like to contribute to Maven.
Have a look at some sample reports:

http://www.picocontainer.org/simian-report.html
http://www.nanocontainer.org/simian-report.html

It would be really nice to have the Simian Report included in the standard reports, as
it reveals refactoring candidates and is something every sound project should have!

Hey guys, I run checkstyle myself but I use the Ant plugin. If I were running maven I
think I'd run the Maven plugin.

Why? Well the fact is that on my source base checkstyle breaks the build and so does
simian so really reporting is not much of an issue for me.

I guess the other reason would be, as Aslak suggested, that it means I'm not tied to
checkstyle (even though I love it!).

Technically, there is no real reason. I imagine performance is pretty much the same in
either case. The only major difference is that the Maven plugin has the cool links to
the source code.

I assume you refer to Simian's built-in integration with Checkstyle. I haven't tried
that part, but I'm sure Simon can shed some light here.

I am biased, since I don't always use the checkstyle plugin, simply because it's not
in sync with the jalopy plugin, and because the report get so darn long. And it's
broken too. (bad links - check out
http://www.picocontainer.org/checkstyle-report.html).

So if Checkstyle and Jalopy are synced, and a Simian/Checkstyle integrated report
reveals at least as much information as the one attached here, I'm all for it.

RE: Responsibility - was [RE: Simian Plugin (fully documented and ready to use)\

2003-06-24 Thread Vincent Massol
My view is very simple: Let's move all plugins outside the core of
Maven. However, ATM it is not done for the following reason:

- There is no mechanism for a project to tell which plugins it wants to
use (and in what version).

[Of course there would a list of default plugins with default versions
when you download maven so that you don't need to specify the full list
of plugins to use in each project].

Once we have this, I'll be the first to vote a big +1 to have each
plugin as a separate project with its own lifecycle.

Responsibility - was [RE: Simian Plugin (fully documented and ready to use)\

2003-06-24 Thread Michal Maczka
Just wanted to express my opinion about new plugins.

I don't think that we should add more plugins to maven, unless they are
really "core plugins".

I think we have quite a lot of dead plugins and many broken plugins,

I like more the idea of having this plugin elsewhere, so original plugin
authors
can take responsibility.

Knowing Aslak's skills I have no doubt that Maven team can give him access
right
to CVS repository to let him maintain this plugin but I want to discuss
general policy regarding this subject.

I think Aslak has a lot of experience with such problems from XDoclet
project.

Simply any plugin which is based on external libraries is very sensitive to
any changes in those
libraries. For example Hibernate, Torque, JBoss plugins will be broken once
there is minor change in
those project. Keeping all plugin up to date in enormous work.

>From the other hand I feel that Maven should have a catalog of known
"foreign" plugins
( in form both of web site, and machine readable file format (XML ?), so any
plugin can be downloaded automatically)

This will not only improve quality of code which is kept in our CVS
repository, but also
will increase the number of people which can actively work on plugins and
having cvs access rights, so
also plugin will be better.

What you think?

RE: Simian Plugin (fully documented and ready to use)

2003-06-24 Thread Vincent Massol
Hi Aslak,

I love the idea of CPD/Simian. However, before we can commit anything
here we would need agreement from redhillconsulting.com that we can put
the simian jar in the Maven remote repository on ibiblio.

If we don’t get this agreement, we could still store this plugin in the
SF mavne-plugins project and users would need to download the simian jar
and put it manually in their local repository.

Thanks
-Vincent

Simian Plugin (fully documented and ready to use)

2003-06-24 Thread Aslak Hellesøy
It seems Maven's JIRA still doesn't notify this list, so here I go...

Simian (http://www.redhillconsulting.com.au/products/simian/index.html )
is a great little tool that detects duplicate source code. Very much
like PMD's CPD (http://pmd.sourceforge.net/cpd.html), but a _lot_ faster.

I have written a Maven report plugin for Simian that I'd like to
contribute to Maven. Have a look at some sample reports:

http://www.picocontainer.org/simian-report.html
http://www.nanocontainer.org/simian-report.html
It would be really nice to have the Simian Report included in the
standard reports, as it reveals refactoring candidates and is something
every sound project should have!

It's all in JIRA:
http://jira.codehaus.org/secure/ViewIssue.jspa?key=MAVEN-516

Cheers,
Aslak
