In general I agree with the schedule, but what strikes me here is the 2
months between the translation deadline and the RC1. I know the
 integration
work takes time, but 2 months seem excessive. This would mean that a
translation completed in February must already wait for the (possible)
 language update release.

In this time period we also have a public beta release. That is the
where the additional time goes. If we want translations in the beta
(why wouldn't we?) then we end up with a schedule like this.

I think a beta is a good idea, could we please agree to name it something
like beta1 to differentiate it from RC1, which is something internal to me.

some time ago we have discussed a language only release on base of
4.0.1. And even a language release requires a lot of work. Until today
 I
see 3 potential languages ready which is not enough from my
 perspective.

We are now at 4 new languages at 100% (bg, da, nb, th). Even if your
proposed schedule (new version) is respected, this means that Danish,
 that
was completed back in October just after the 4.0.1 release, would stay
unreleased until April. Thanks to your and Herbert's work we will have
snapshots available for those languages from the buildbots in a couple
 days,
so most of the integration work has already been done. Wouldn't it make
sense to release 4.0.1 in the additional 4 languages in January, to avoid
 the 6-months gap?

This sounds like a good idea to me, a language refresh like we did with
 3.4.1.

If I remember right, we did not make a new version, just release the new
languages (incl. danish) for the same version.

exactly, we released the new languages (full install + language pack)
and an updated source release including the sdf files for the new languages.

We can of course do that as soon Pootle is talking to me again
(INFRA-7160, potentially an upgrade problem). If we do a language only
release we should include Hindi which is UI complete as well.

Let's pick up this again when Pootle is working and I can synchronize
the latest updates for this new languages.

Re: [RELEASE]: proposal for our next release AOO 4.1

2013-12-18 Thread Yuzhen Fan
Feb ??, 2014 feature FVT finish (I know in China is public holiday as
well from Jan 31 - Feb 7)

QA needs about 70 PD to complete the left 1061 executions (total 1061,
suppose 15 executions per day per QA volunteer being concentrated on this
work) on Writer(140), Calc(330) and Impress(591). We started the feature
FVT early on Oct 29, the original plan is to complete Writer on 11/29, Calc
on 12/27 and Impress on 1/24, we are very behind the planned schedule now
because of the less volunteers. It would be optimistic to finish feature
FVT before Feb 13.

Feb 21 - ? full regression testing and bug fixing

Based on the experience from 4.0 Full Regression(22 QA volunteers completed
1,221 regression test executions during 10 weeks), if we take the same
volume of executions and execution rate in 4.1, we may not complete it
before Mar 20(4 weeks). The complete date would depend on how many QA
volunteers will participate and how much effort they will provide, as well
as how many defects are found.

no, as far as I know their are no UI changes. I plan an update of the

Ideally people who made improvements or fixed translations should create

I would like to propose a new release AOO 4.1 early next year and as

holidays in many countries will slow down all the activities a little
bit I can think of the following:

 Jan 10, 2014features freeze
Jan 13, 2014translation freeze for beta

I'm not sure what freeze for beta means? Will more languages be
permitted after beta? Or only bug fixes to the languages that made it
into beta? The purpose of a beta is to help assure quality, so it
might be reasonable to have all new features, including new languages
in the beta. But I could also see an argument for letting more
 languages come after beta.

sorry for being unclear, it should be the translation deadline. Even the
integrating of new languages requires some time and effort and we have
to work with a deadline. We don't have UI changes as far as I can see.
At least no reported ones and I can't see where a few days more would
change anything.

I would love to see a continuous integration of translation but this
still requires some work. Especially the verification of simple errors,
like mismatch tags should be automated in some way. I notice a lot of
such mistakes when I work on the integration.

 Jan 20, 2014feature FVT finish
Jan 21, 20144.1 beta candidate, with major features and languages
Jan 27, 20144.1 beta release for public review
Jan 27 - ? full regression testing and bug fixing

I assume we would produce further snapshot builds for testing, by QA
volunteers in the project, while the beta is ongoing.

yes, we should do that on a regular basis

 ? RC1 Feb 28, or later?

A one-month beta would take us to February 28th. Next steps would
depend on the feedback from the beta, how many serious issues are
found, how many have already been fixed, etc. We would assume that
the most spectacular bugs will be found in the first couple of days of
the beta, not in the last week. But if things go well then the beta
naturally leads into a RC for 4.1.

the feedback on the beta will give us more info how to proceed

 Hi,

some time ago we have discussed a language only release on base of
4.0.1. And even a language release requires a lot of work. Until today I
see 3 potential languages ready which is not enough from my perspective.
But on the other side we have some nice stuff in place that should be
released asap, for example the iAccessibility support which is a great
step forward and will help a lot of people.

I would like to propose a new release AOO 4.1 early next year and as
soon as possible. Taking into account that Christmas and the related
holidays in many countries will slow down all the activities a little
bit I can think of the following:

 Jan 10, 2014features freeze
Jan 13, 2014translation freeze for beta
 Jan 20, 2014feature FVT finish
Jan 21, 20144.1 beta candidate, with major features and languages
Jan 27, 20144.1 beta release for public review
Jan 27 - ? full regression testing and bug fixing
 ? RC1 Feb 28, or later?
 GA ?

I really would like to see the iAccessibility improvements publicly
available as soon as possible because from my perspective it is a
further huge milestone for AOO. And I would like to support the new
languages as soon as possible and hopefully we can have a few more. Some
are very close to be ready.

Opinions and feedback is welcome and I hope may of you can share my view.

I haven't yet installed the linux snapshot containing these changes or
reviewed current bugs *in a while* but the proposed schedule looks like a
good goal to me. The public beta will be an interesting aspect for us.
