I filed https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/issue/6267 requesting

I swear we talked about this somewhere before. I can't find the ticket,
though. My suggestion was to simply replace or redirect to a static
page until a replacement can be created. I think it was a pagure ticket
somewhere, but I'm not sure where.

wrappers will invoke the resolver, and do PTR lookups, and so
can do:
- hostname based,
- domain related, and
- absent DNS information based blocking

I know of no way to do these tasks with the 'firewalld' code

Sounds like you're using dnf for a host system? The Fedora
editions that use rpm-ostree for the host (Atomic Host, and
https://pagure.io/workstation-ostree-config)
are quite resilient to this; in fact by default package layering is just that -
layering, it doesn't
allow removing from the base.

But while rpm-ostree has somewhat of a (partially deserved) reputation
for "you can't do that", in fact you can:

NetworkManager):

# rpm-ostree ex override reset setup atomic atomic-devmode cloud-init

Will get back to the base.

pkgdb 'collections' API is now inaccurate, will soon go away (was Re: PkgDB and the ArbitraryBranching Change)

2017-08-18 Thread Adam Williamson
On Fri, 2017-05-26 at 15:42 -0400, Ralph Bean wrote:

There's an important consequence of this that I only realized today.

pkgdb had an API endpoint, 'collections', which was useful as a
reliable source of information about available Fedora releases and
their status. It still exists now, until pkgdb is entirely turned off:

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/api/collections/

but as pkgdb was made read-only on August 4th, its data is outdated. It
shows Fedora 24 as 'active' (rather than 'EOL'), and it has not had
Fedora 27 added (as would usually be the case when it branched).

My 'fedfind' project provides a couple of helper functions for
discovering the current release, all current stable releases etc.,
which were backed by the collections API. I have various things
downstream of fedfind that rely on these helpers, and I know for sure
there is other code that similarly relies on the collections API; the
one I know about for sure is gnome-software, but I'm pretty sure there
are some others too.

Of course, the 'natural' response to this would be to rewrite things
that use the pkgdb collections API to use PDC instead. However, there's
a problem with that: PDC does not provide sufficient data. Releases in
PDC can only be marked as "active" or "inactive". It seems EOL releases
are marked "inactive" and both stable and under-development releases
are marked "active" - so it is literally not possible to tell from PDC
whether a release is stable or Branched (e.g. right now, both Fedora 26
and Fedora 27 are simply 'active').

There is a long-standing bug report about this for PDC, which I've just
updated:
https://github.com/product-definition-center/product-definition-center/issues/294

Anyway, just wanted to provide a heads-up about this problem for anyone
who's using collections (either directly or via fedfind). For fedfind
purposes, I've cut a new release - 3.6.1 - which simply has the current
'correct' answers hard coded, and this will be provided as an update.
Ralph Bean says he'll try to help get PDC updated to handle this
situation, and then I'll update fedfind again to get the information
from PDC. If you're using the pkgdb data directly, please be aware that
it is no longer accurate and will disappear entirely, whenever pkgdb is
fully disabled. CCing Richard Hughes for the gnome-software case.

Update Information:

This update adds support for the new modular composes, with 'Fedora-Modular' as
their shortnames. Currently only Rawhide and Branched nightly modular composes
are supported. This new version of fedfind handles an unusual situation
where its local cache directory (which is usually `~/.cache/fedfind`, but can be
a temporary directory if that location is not writeable) disappears during the
lifetime of a fedfind-using process. Previously, this would cause the process to
crash, as fedfind wasn't written to handle this eventuality. There are no other
changes in this update.

Re: tcp_wrappers deprecation

2017-08-18 Thread Jason L Tibbitts III
For the record, denyhosts currently relies upon the tcp_wrappers
functionality in openssh to function. While it's possible to make it
manipulate the firewall as well, the whole situation is kind of a mess.
(Does it talk to firewalld? What if you're not running firewalld?)

Sadly I know how terrible tcp_wrappers is and so I know it needs to go
away. It's just unfortunate that there's no replacement for it besides
firewalling, and dealing with the firewall is unfortunately so
complicated.

So that's three of my packages that use tcp_wrappers in some way
(denyhosts, apcupsd and cyrus-imapd) though I suspect two of those just
need the build dependencies dropped.

Yes. The rules are explained in the update policy:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Updates_Policy#Updates_to_.27critical_path.27_packages

critpath packages must wait 14 days *or* get a total of +2 karma before
they can be pushed; non-critpath packages must wait 7 days *or* get a
total of +1. (The policy doesn't *quite* match Bodhi's behaviour here;
Bodhi will allow you to push a non-critpath update stable manually once
it has +1 karma, or if you set an auto-push karma number when you
submit the update, Bodhi will push it *automatically* once that karma
number is reached).

First thing to do would be to contact the libwebsockets maintainer
and inform him about the dependency breakage and the updates policy.

Testing your rebuild/upgrade properly will still be needed. Don't rush!
Your package users may have installed packages before the libwebsockets
upgrade, and since they cannot update to the new libwebsockets version,
that may protect them from further breakage. That's a good thing. Test
your updates including the new libwebsockets carefully.

Promoting a package to stable

2017-08-18 Thread Irina Boverman
I have a package in F25/F25 stable distributions that will not install
because the dependency is no longer there (new version of libwebsockets was
promoted to stable). I re-built them, but I have to wait another week
before it will be possible to promote them to stable. Is there a way to
promote them right away?

Re: Many 'map' SELinux denials in current Rawhide

2017-08-18 Thread Daniel Walsh

Adam Williamson kirjoitti 15.08.2017 klo 02:37:

Of course, for day-to-day Rawhide users, booting with 'enforcing=0' can
work around these issues for now (or you could, I suppose, create a
local policy that just blanket allowed the 'map' permission in all
cases, so all other SELinux restrictions would remain in place).

For those less familiar with SELinux but still using it and wishing to
keep things that way, it would be awesome to have a quick summary (or
just pointer to documentation) on how you do this. It sounds like a
fairly straightforward task to describe if you know your way around
SELinux.

Thanks,

This would be fairly difficult. Basically the kernel added a new access
check map to verify memory mapped file systems are still accessible by
the process after a policy load. The map access had to be added to all
file access interfaces. Basically lots of rules are written

read_files_pattern(SOURCE_T, TARGET_T)

But read_files_pattern had to have an additional map access added and
then all of the domains get the access.

However, I don't see any collision between what I wrote and and your

*ouch* Covering such a corner-case is of limited use, IMO.
What other package tools would benefit from such a protection?

If, on the contrary, dnf decided to remove such packages during a normal
updates while running into depsolving troubles, _that_ would be interesting
to fix (because removing a package without replacing it would be a big bug).

I tried to discuss this topic in the past wrt AcceptedPreviousRelease, and
I didn't receive many responses from relevant people. From what I did
receive, I created this description (part of the official SOP, so it should
be "in production"):
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:SOP_blocker_bug_process#Tracking_AcceptedPreviousRelease_blocker_bugs

It might seem that this only discusses when to close
AcceptedPreviousRelease bugs. However, having all blocker bugs closed is a
prerequisite to voting "Go". So this is effectively a policy of how to
handle AcceptedPreviousRelease blockers state during Go/NoGo. The key
sentence describing the required state is:

"Only when it is guaranteed that MirrorManager refers only to the push
containing the fixed package or newer pushes, we should mark this bug
as *CLOSED
ERRATA*. "

And track-previous-release-blocker.py script implements that (it's quite
tedious to check that manually). I guess we could use the same approach
(and the same script) even for Accepted0Day. I'm not exactly sure how
'updates' repo is handled before Go, whether some people with older repos
can get older metadata not containing the required fix. If it is guaranteed
that 'updates' repo on release day is always up-to-day for all users (i.e.
it's the very push to that repo, no older metadata references are in
repomd.xml), it's even easier to check the state - just make sure the fix
is in updates-pending tag and we're good to go.

If anyone is still interested in prename, I finally got a license from the
developer, so I proposed it for Fedora inclusion.

Hmmm, is it possible? I thought that with rpm I am able to remove even
protected packages.
In addition, I am able to remove even packages without dependencies, so I don't
see the point.
rpm is low level tool. No, I am talking just about use of dnf which is high
level tool for working
with packages/modules.

Whatever you've done, you would need to remove more packages before
 you could remove "setup".

In case a tool like "dnf" has done it, I'd like to see the details,
particularly the packages DNF used to replace setup and shadow-utils.

Our basesystem package seems to be quite neglected.

For comparison, here's Mageia's basesystem:
http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages/cauldron/basesystem/current/SPECS/basesystem.spec?view=markup

We should probably consider filling out the basesystem package more
and making it so that it is a protected package.

That package isn't supposed to get removed on a Fedora system anyway.

Obiously you are able to remove shadow-utils "without troubles" too. That's
just point
that the list of protected packages should be bigger. IMHO, packages that are
crucial
for basic run of the system shouldn't be removable.

We have. But currently I am able to remove that package without troubles

is set just Requires(pres) for setup and filesystem. I heard something that

That doesn't make sense [yet]. It cannot remove it without breaking

It doesn't replace it with anything, it just considers it okay to
remove from the system, because we don't have any protected packages
that depend on setup. Technically, the basesystem package is supposed
to be protected, but it's not. If it was, then setup would not be
removable.

In Mageia, we have a package "mageia-dnf-conf" that adds additional
protected.d files for protecting core system components. We probably
need the same thing for Fedora.

Clarify, please. What exactly have you found out? Have you found an update
case where one of the package updater tools removed it actually?

  $ rpm -q --whatrequires setup
  rpcbind-0.2.4-7.rc2.fc26.x86_64
  shadow-utils-4.3.1-3.fc26.x86_64

Whatever you've done, you would need to remove more packages before
you could remove "setup".

In case a tool like "dnf" has done it, I'd like to see the details,
particularly the packages DNF used to replace setup and shadow-utils.

Don't we have a basesystem package or something to mark as protected? It
should be protected, so that people can't rip it out and bust the
system into tiny little pieces.

removable setup rpm?!

2017-08-18 Thread Petr Stodulka
Hi folks,

I found now that the setup rpm is removable from the system,
which leads to unusable system, because of missing important files,
like /etc/shadow,

Could you anyone say why that? I heard something about dependency hell, so
in that case, the packages should be at least protected like dnf, systemd, etc.

One possible way would be the config file for dnf in downstream, like
  echo setup > /etc/yum/protected.d/setup.conf

Any better idea before I create bugzilla?

Modularity, container images, and the default Python stack(s)

2017-08-18 Thread Nick Coghlan
Hi folks,

[Note: this may not make much sense to folks that haven't been closely
following the Modular Server work for F27. If that's you, sorry -
hopefully this will be more comprehensible by the time I officially
propose it for F28, as the relevant terminology becomes more widely
understood. In the meantime, check out
https://docs.pagure.org/modularity/ to learn more]

I'm working on a draft proposal for a "Default Python" module (see
https://fedora-python.readthedocs.io/en/latest/plans/default-python-module/
for details), and hit an interesting challenge when it comes to
defining the containing images that we want to be able to build from
our module definitions.

A quick summary of what I'm expecting we'll have by F28:

- a separate platform-python binary in the Platform module
- python2 modules with a full 2.7 stream and a partial
interpreter-only 2.6 stream
- python3 modules with a full 3.6 stream and a TBD set of other streams
- a default-python module to switch between no-default,
python2-default and python3-default

With those modules defined, a minimal Fedora container image will only
include platform-python, but we'd at least also have Python3-F28, and
Python2-F28 images that included the respective user Python stack in
addition to the platform Python runtime.

The part I'm struggling with is this: Python 3.7.0 is expected to be
released in June 2018, while Fedora 28 is due out in May 2018. It
would be *really nice* to be able to define a Fedora 28 based Python
3.7 container where "/usr/bin/python" and "/usr/bin/python3" were both
references to "/usr/bin/python3.7".

The challenge with actually doing that lies in the "/usr/bin/python3"
symlink: integrated userspace Python applications in F28 are going to
expect that to still refer to the Python 3.6 stream.

One way I could potentially see this working:

* the normal non-conflicting setup is as follows:

  * the python3 3.6 stream includes a "/usr/bin/python3" symlink
  * the other python3 3.x streams do *not* include such a symlink &
hence don't conflict
  * the default-python python3-default stream does *not* include such
a symlink & hence doesn't conflict

We then add some more streams to the default-python module that *do*
include a "/usr/bin/python3" symlink: python3.5-default,
python3.7-default, etc

The trick with these streams is that they would *conflict* with the
regular python3 3.6 stream, due to the disagreement over what
"/usr/bin/python" means. That dependency resolution conflict would
then mean that have a non-default version of Python 3.x configured as
the default when defining your container would *prevent* you from
including any regular userspace Python components - you'd only be able
to include the ones built specifically for that stream.

Does that approach sound sufficiently plausible to folks that I can
use it to provide feedback to the folks working on the modularity
tooling as to the capabilities we think we'll need?

Cheers,
Nick.

I couldn't get Pagure's webhooks to work properly (see
https://pagure.io/pagure/issue/2522), so revising the revised plan:
could someone with the appropriate access create me a fedora-python
repo under https://github.com/fedora-python and grant me admin access
to it? :)

With the Pagure folks being busy with the dist-git integration, that
makes more sense to me than fiddling about trying to get Pagure's
webhooks working.

Cheers,
Nick.

Careful here. The source code in the git repo is 4-5 years old.
The compiler errors look much more like outdated C++ that will require
porting to GCC 7 in possibly many places. That can be non-trivial or
a lot of work. Have upstream developers been contacted about it yet?

Confirmed this works for Rawhide (F27). But failed for F24 because of
package dependency issue.

$ sudo dnf install --allowerasing ./python2-rpkg-1.50-1.fc27.noarch.rpm
Last metadata expiration check: 1:47:33 ago on Fri Aug 18 14:19:09 2017.
Error: nothing provides python2-koji needed by python2-rpkg-1.50-1.fc27.noarch

thanks

IMHO, this needs to change to make the elections meaningful, again.

That's the same opinion which came through in the other thread.
I think we can improve that but we should not put too many requirements for
nominations.
If someone wants to run in the next elections he might have understood that
questionnaires are very important for the final result.
It's up to them to use it or not. I'm curious to see the new release of the
voting app, and we could also think to put nominees' social networks there,
just to compete all the channels they might use for their campaign.

Maybe we could make fedpkg-1.29 Requires: python2-rpkg >= 1.50 ?

I was using fedpkg-1.28-1.fc24.noarch, after I update it to
fedpkg-1.29-1.fc26.noarch pointed by link [1]. fedpkg can't work
at all.

[honli@localhost fedora]$ fedpkg clone libmlx5
/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/fedora/client/bodhi.py:48:
DeprecationWarning: fedora.client.bodhi has been deprecated. Please use
bodhi.client.bindings instead.
  DeprecationWarning)
  Could not execute clone: 'kojiconfig'

[honli@localhost fedora]$ fedpkg clone libmthca
/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/fedora/client/bodhi.py:48:
DeprecationWarning: fedora.client.bodhi has been deprecated. Please use
bodhi.client.bindings instead.

I also test fedpkg-1.29-1.fc26.noarch with a fresh Fedora Rawhide (F27)
virtual machine, issue persists.

Voting is not limited to relevant group, so some information on election
options is helpful. One can of course do a web search, email list posting
and commit history summary, but this may not always give exactly relevant
information.

This is up to the candidates. Candidates can use i.e. social networks
to present them self. Typically every candidate has a User page which
is linked from the voting machine. And again, it is up to the
candidate what information he would like to publish there. We are not
forcing candidates to publish any information, it is their free will.

IMHO, this needs to change to make the elections meaningful, again.

Hi Honggang,

Looks like you need the new version of fedpkg-1.29, which is in Bodhi[1].

This is up to the candidates. Candidates can use i.e. social networks
to present them self. Typically every candidate has a User page which
is linked from the voting machine. And again, it is up to the
candidate what information he would like to publish there. We are not
forcing candidates to publish any information, it is their free will.

Jan
