Fedora-Legal-README.txt in installation media outdated?

2021-04-27 Thread Qiyu Yan
If you download a Fedora 34 live iso at https://getfedora.org/
with filename: Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-34-1.2.iso

Mount it and see Fedora-Legal-README.txt in the image. There are many
Fedora 31 things show up, should this file be updated on each release
cycle?

(Maybe not, unless someone like me mounts the iso file by mistake, and
check the Legal file by curiosity LOL)

Orphaning xfontsel

I've orphaned xfontsel, one of the many possibly-older-than-thou X
utilities. From the man page:

xfontsel - point and click selection of X11 font names

So it does support both point *and* click. Futuristic stuff indeed ;)

Package is here if you want to take it:

That looks like a recurring kerberos issue.

You probably want to contact releng to help solve this.

There is COPR but I suspect this is reserved to Fedora packagers so you
will still need to be sponsored.

Our SELinux policy contains rules for software not included in Fedora,
including some proprietary software, so I would say we have a precedent
in other areas.

If the service in question follows the rules then I don't see why it
cannot be included.

Thank you for this!  I too am using postgresql and I also had simply ran
/usr/libexec/bacula/update_bacula_tables.  Things looked ok until I
tried a test restore:

Building directory tree for JobId(s) 15256,15739,15762 ...  Query
failed: DECLARE _bac_cursor CURSOR FOR SELECT Path.Path, T1.Filename,
T1.FileIndex, T1.JobId, LStat, DeltaSeq  FROM ( SELECT DISTINCT ON

Filename, File.FileIndex, LStat , DeltaSeq FROM BaseFiles JOIN File
USING (FileId) WHERE BaseFiles.JobId IN (15256,15739,15762) ) AS T JOIN
Job USING (JobId) ORDER BY Filename, PathId, DeltaSeq, JobTDate DESC  )
AS T1 JOIN Path ON (Path.PathId = T1.PathId) WHERE FileIndex > 0 ORDER
BY T1.JobTDate, FileIndex ASC: ERR=ERROR:  permission denied for table file

However, once I ran /usr/libexec/bacula/grant_bacula_privilege, that
problem was solved.  From what I can see, everything is working fine now.

Yeah, you might want to ship both a systemd unit and an XDG autostart
file for the time being. There will still be graphical desktops
environments which are not started using systemd in the foreseeable
future.

If you decide to ship both, please add X-GNOME-HiddenUnderSystemd=true
and X-systemd-hidden=true to the desktop file to prevent the service
from getting started twice.

If the ExitType= patch fixes this, then the problem is that the
generated service does not handle forking services right now and it
will work fine with systemd v249 and later.

[Input Requested] Preset support for third-party services

2021-04-27 Thread Stephen Gallagher
I originally raised this as a question to FESCo[1], but I was asked to
bring it up on the Fedora Devel list. My apologies for taking so long
to get around to it.

While looking into a preset request, I realized that the guidelines[2]
do not say anything at all about enabling default services that are
not packaged in Fedora.

For a specific example: suppose that a particular VM host provides its
guest tools only as a closed-source binary that they ship. Do we
permit them to request the inclusion of their service in presets under
the reasoning that it would enhance users' performance on those
systems, or do we disallow any non-Fedora software from being included
in the presets?

What about a third-party repository that provides a closed-source
service that enhances an open-source project (for example, a
closed-source codec server that works with open-source encoding
software)?

In 2019 I did some measurements of F31→F32. First step of distribution upgrade
took 16 minutes on a desktop computer. The results are at
https://enotty.pipebreaker.pl/posts/2019/12/time-needed-to-dist-upgrade-fedora/

> Do you have a huge number of packages? Lot's of modules? A very slow disk?

 `rpm -qa` returns 3109. No modules (I think). Storage is btrfs raid1
over 2xHDD (5900 RPM) + bcache with 2x384GiB partitions.

Normally I would use /usr/libexec/bacula/update_mysql_tables but I
found in this case that it didn't work because it was trying to drop an

table).

Thanks for the reply. I turned out to be able to run:

/usr/libexec/bacula/update_bacula_tables

I'm using postgresql, and the script did manage to update the database. And as
you say, it took a long time.

Then, I was getting failures from bacula that it couldn't insert into the File

grant_bacula_privileges

Once I did that, it all started working.

Thanks again for the help!

That amounts to saying that every packager can use whatever compiler they

The change proposal defines a default compiler for Fedora:

"The default compiler for Fedora is gcc or when upstream doesn't support gcc,

The actual text from the change proposal that describes when a packager may
switch from the default is:

"Given a good technical reason, a packager may:

Choose to build with their package with clang even if the upstream project
supports gcc.
Choose to build with gcc even if upstream does not support it.

Thanks for the suggestion, but IMO Maven in Fedora should be built the
same way as upstream builds it, that is with Maven. That minimizes the
possibility of deviating from upstream and introducing unnoticed bugs.
Instead a custom project was created that is used to build from
scratch a minimal environment that contains Maven and that can be used
to build Maven package. Then Maven can be used to rebuild itself as
many times as needed.

You might want to take a look at openSUSE's maven package:
https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/Java:packages/maven

It builds itself using ant and not using maven. You'll probably
recognize a good chunk of the spec, because it originally came from
Fedora (I'm also pretty certain that Fridrich, the package maintainer,
would not object to a cross distribution collaboration).

My plans for the upcoming months regarding adopted packages include:

 1) triaging all open bugs and reviewing all open pull requests,

 2) closing the gap between Fedora and CentOS, by merging dist-git
contents of appropriate components in Fedora Rawhide and CentOS
Stream 9,

 3) unretiring some of Maven and Ant dependencies,

 4) improving testing automation, especially implementing
package-specific tests for use in gating,

 5) automating the process of bootstrapping Maven and Ant with related
components, so that new versions can be imported and built
reproducibly and with consistent quality.

 6) restoring Maven compatibility with OpenJDK 8, so that users who
are stuck with older JDKs have an ability to keep using their
build tools with JDK of their preference.

Sure! As long as maintainers are on board...

I'm not sure how wide support for 6 is, but I suspect it's easier to get
to than 4-5 was. ;)

Yeah, agreed.

Happy to work with you both and get this done. :)

F34 update experience

2021-04-27 Thread Neal Becker
Updated F33 -> F34. Mostly went well, except there is one thing which
could be better. This is not new to F34 but has been there since the
dnf system-upgrade.

Running on a pretty decent laptop (core i7, 8GB, SSD). The issue is
that the installation hangs a long time with no evidence of activity.
The hang begins at
dnf running transaction. It is disconcerting because it hangs for
about 20-30 minutes, and during that time the fan is not running, so
no evidence of cpu usage. There seems to be no way to switch VT to
try to see what's happening. I'd hate to see what happens on a less
capable machine.

I wish there was some way to get some better feedback that the update is alive.

publish it as an RPM package for Fedora.

I almost missed this precious document, in my opinion it should go to

The document covers almost all the problems that I found

"if test "$ac_test_CFLAGS" = set" , stopped to work what is the correct
replacement ? "if test -z $CFLAGS; then"
or "if test $ac_test_CFLAGS; then"  this second option was found here

Normally I would use /usr/libexec/bacula/update_mysql_tables but I
found in this case that it didn't work because it was trying to drop an
index from a table that didn't already exist (the index, not the
table).

I did manage to complete the update by opening up a mysql session and
manually running the commands in the update script for upgrades from
version 16, which is several incremental upgrades to get to 1022. I
ignored the errors relating to commands for dropping indexes that
weren't there.

Beware that if you have a substantial "File" database that this process
will take quite a long time and require a little more free disk space
than taken by the existing bacula database, on top of the original
database.

My backups ran apparently successfully last night on the new version.
This morning I tested a restore that pulled in 14,637 files that came
from a mix of full and differential backups on the old version and the
latest incremental on the latest version. That worked OK.

Paul.

Is it possible that some Lua code there breaks all the other Lua

Sounds strange. I'll look into it, but please file a bug.

Thanks.

So the issue was that a %{ in a macro file comment prevents the
remainder of the macros in that file loading. I've reverted the change
for now to consider the right thing:

We see a problem with this construct:

Source0:    %{pypi_source}

It used to work:

$ rpmspec -P python-asyncpg.spec | grep Source0
Source0:
https://files.pythonhosted.org/packages/source/a/asyncpg/asyncpg-0.22.0.tar.gz

$ rpm --define 'name foo' --define 'version 1.2.3' --eval '%{pypi_source}'
https://files.pythonhosted.org/packages/source/f/foo/foo-1.2.3.tar.gz

$ rpm --showrc | grep pypi_source -A3
-13: pypi_source    %{lua:
 local src = rpm.expand('%1')
 local ver = rpm.expand('%2')
 local ext = rpm.expand('%3')

Now we get:

error: Bad source: /builddir/build/SOURCES/%{pypi_source}: No such file or
directory

when building the package.

In mock:

 sh-5.1# rpmspec -P python-asyncpg.spec | grep Source0
Source0:    %{pypi_source}

sh-5.1# rpm --define 'name foo' --define 'version 1.2.3' --eval
'%{pypi_source}'

%{pypi_source}

 sh-5.1# rpm --showrc | grep pypi_source -A3
(empty)

The file is /usr/lib/rpm/macros.d/macros.python-srpm. None of the Lua macros
there seem to be known to RPM, but other macros from that file work fine.

Is it possible that some Lua code there breaks all the other Lua macros from
that file? I see no error, just the macros are not recognized, as if they
don't exist.

Sounds strange. I'll look into it, but please file a bug.

Thank you so much for the work you put into these packages, and I'm
really sorry I couldn't be more help.

After struggling with our Java packages for quite a bit, the neuro-sig
reached a similar conclusion---that they're just too much work or just
pretty much impossible to keep in Fedora. We've now accepted that
documenting Java tools and asking users to install them directly from
upstream is the most we can manage.
