[digitalradio] Re: Newbie

2006-08-11 Thread Dave Bernstein
It is amazing how well this works; more than once, I've gotten totally
confused as to how I was decoding PSK with cables misconnected or the
mixer misconfigured -- only to discover this audio path carrying the
freight.

I've tried a few audio PSK CQs in commercial airplane cabins, but have
yet to get a response. If laptop mics and speakers were capable, we
could define an ultrasonic calling frequency for intra-plane QSOs.

Hi Tim, I am not sure about the 950 an the HD15 but I am sure someone
here will know.

As for digital mode software, you are in luck.. there are lots of
applications that are easily obtained.

Currently on the HF bands the most popular digital mode (outside of
CW) is PSk31. You will find signals easily on 14070 and other parts
of the HF band . PSk31 is mostly a "rag-chew" mode but folks
occasionally chase DX or contest via this mode. RTTY is still there,
especially on weekend's when there might be a RTTY contest, or when
there is a DXpedition. RTTY rag-chews are still there but not as
often as they used to be. The remaining digital modes: MFSK16,
Olivia, Chip, Domino, MT63, Throb, ALE's digital messaging, Packet,
Pax2, CCW, Contestia, PACTOR, RTTYM, Hell, FSK31, PSK63 , and others,
drop off considerable in terms of utilization, you can go several
hours without hearing a QSO in these modes. Another digital mode,
SSTV ,is also quite popular, exchanging pictures via digital radio.

There are two software applications that provide you with almost all
of the above modes. One called Multipsk and one called MixW. Mixw
costs about $50 , I think, but you can download a free trial for 30
days. Multipsk31 is mostly free, a few advanced features require the
registered version, which I think costs about $40. The free version
does not expire. Both of these are very powerful applications, they
do have a learning curve but good support is available via specfic
Yahoo groups and via this group.

If you want to start with just the most commonly found digital modes -
PSK31, RTTY, and MFSK16- there are several totally free applications
with less of a learning curve (generally) that provide these modes.
Winwarbler, Logger32 (with a logging program) , MMVARI, and Hamscope
are ones that come to mind. If you want to try JUST PSK; Digipan is a
very popular free program and is very easy to set-up.

Google any of the aformentioned software titles and you will find easy
downloads. Let the folks here know when u need more help. Setting up
is not too diffcult.

Glenn, for disaster services..people like FEMA and other Govt agencies
often use a digital mode called ALE. Hams also use that mode. ALE
for govt agencies is often an HF mode. Hams also use a digital mode
called PACTOR on HF for emergency communications.

On VHF and UHF there are a LOT of hams that use a digital mode called
Packet radio for emergency communications , usually via relay of email-
type messages and occasional file attachments. Winlink/Airmail is one
such system that uses packet on VHF/UHF (they also use Pactor on HF).
To get started in Win-link you will need some free software and then
connect you PC to the VHF or UHF radio. Let us know what kind of VHF
or UHF radio you have, if you want to try connecting it for packet
radio. A hardware device called a "TNC" is often used for packet
radio but you can also do packet via a free software application that
uses the PC's soundcard.

Feel free to ask more questions if you get close to connecting your
radio to a PC or TNC.

Also on VHF /UHF via packet radio is APRS, often helpful for emergency
communication, tracking, and weather alerts. All the software you
would need for that is also free!

Using a plain old microphone on UHF or VHF is also common for
emergency of public service communication. Storm alerting networks
("Skywarn", Hurricane nets" ) and message relaying nets ("traffic
nets") are often on VHF.

The HF bands also use digital modes such as PSK31, RTTY, MFSK16,
Olivia, and Hell, for basic conversations via a keyboard. These modes
can be used for emergency communications but are not usually
associated with formal emergency communication groups (like Red Cross,
Sally Army,ARES, RACES, etc, etc).

Mike, the R1000 is a good old receiver, I used to have the R2000. To
just listen to digital modes all you need is a audio cable that takes
the sound from your r1000 to the line in of your computer's soundcard,
plus some free software. You can choose Winwarbler, Multipsk,
MMVARI , or Hamscope as the free sofware packages that have several of
the digital modes. With the cable hooked up and the software you will
be able to decode PSK31, RTTY, MFSK16, and other modes depending on
the software, PSK31 on 14070 USB is probably the easiest to find and
decode.

You will only need "more" if you wish to actually control the radio
via the PC but I don't think the R1000 will do that anyway.

Let me know if you need more help. Give it a try, it is fun!

[digitalradio] multimode beacon

2006-08-11 Thread David Michael Gaytko // WD4KPD
sorry for late replies to you all that responded, been gone for week.
should be back in groove monday.

what i had done with the wav file was to create each modes audio stacked
in frequency. i put cw down around 300hz, then added the others on up
to around 2.5kc with a little guardband. all of them play at the same,
in a loop and it is up to the receiver to seperate the modes.

would really guess that the real question is what freq to run such an
animal on the bands

might be a fun contest for working people on PSK31 , Dominoex, Hell,
