[digitalradio] How to -- FDMDV Digital Voice Over HF

2008-05-30 Thread Tony
All,

Received several emails about Digital Voice Over HF after Andy and I sent our
QRV posts. Please see below for a quick guide on how to connect the rig to the
PC sound card(s).

The DV software needs either two sound cards or one card and a USB microphone
headset. A USB sound card will do fine as the #2 card.

Hope this helps...

Tony -K2MO

Voice Input:

This sound card input is used for the microphone. If you only have one sound
card, a USB microphone headset will do. The software sees it as a second
sound card.

RX Input:

This input is used for the incoming audio from the rig to the sound cards
line-in jack.

TX Output:

This is the PC output audio (line out) that carries the DV signal to the
rig.

Voice Output:

This output connects to the PC speakers and will carry the decoded voice output
from the speaker jack on the PC to the speakers.

If you have two sound cards, use the #1 card for the Voice Input / TX Output
and the #2 card for the RX Input / Voice output.

For one soundcard with a USB microphone headset:

Voice Input USB microphone headset
Rx Input Rig audio to sound cards line-in jack
TX Output - PC audio line out to rig
Voice Output - PC speaker out to PC speakers or USB headset

Yves, I'm running a K2-100.
*Audio to and from it is through the microphone connection using modifications
described by LA3ZA
(http://www.qsl.net/ve3mcf/elecraft_reflect/K2_Audio_Output_Port.txt).
*Audio isolation from the computer is provided by two transformers removed from
old modems.
*I have the KIO2 I/O module, so PTT is done through CAT commands.
*fldigi is my digital software (http://www.w1hkj.com/Fldigi.html), which also
allows me to use flarq (http://www.w1hkj.com/flarq_main.html) and PSKmail

[digitalradio] PSK31...but I know that already...

2008-05-30 Thread Andrew O'Brien
I am reminded or Peter Martinez's original goal when he invented
PSK31, that it become a conversational mode. Lately the use of macros
, even among hams that speak the same language, has reach interesting
heights. I am not convinced that many hams actually read what is
coming back to them. Take this example...

CQ CQ CQ K3UK

K3UK de KCZZZ (made up callsign)

(K3UK's Winwarbler with DXKeeper or DM780 then automatically look up
KC2ZZZ's callbook info and inserts name and address in to a macro)

KC2ZZZ de K3UK. Nice to meet you Dave, glad I am making it in to
Plainfield , NJ, tonight. Your report 599. Can you tell me how my
tones sound, I wonder if I am over driving via this new soudncard.
BTU de K3UK

K3UK de KC2ZZZ. Thanks Andy . My name is Dave and my QTH Plainfield,
NJ. How is my signal ? BTU de KC2ZZZ

KC2ZZZ de K3UK . Your signal is 599 Dave, 100% copy. Running 40
watts here BTW, Inverted V at 40 ft is the antenna. Do my tones sound
right to you ? I am using a new soundcard and think it sounds a
little odd to me tonight. KC2ZZZ de Andy K3UK

K3UK de KC2ZZZ. FB Andy. Age here is 55, Wx warm and sunny. Thanks
for the call. 73 . K3UK de KC2ZZZ

I have actually had NUMEROUS conversations like this this week, I'm
OK with macros, I like 'em in fact, but lets read what the other guy
is sending before we use a canned response.

[digitalradio] WSPR New Digital Mode - QSO Completed

2008-05-30 Thread Mark Thompson
WSPR QSO Completed

WSPR is a new digital mode that hams have been experimenting with on HF and VHF
bands over the last few months. Joe Taylor K1JT has been the driving force
behind this weak signal development.

WSJT is capable of extremely weak signal detection way below the noise floor
due to its use of very robust Forward Error Correction techniques.

Stations previously have been operating using beacon like transmissions to test
the capabilities of the mode using very low power often way less than 1Watt.

On May 6 2008 the first two way QSO was made using WSPR between K1JT and W6CQZ
on 30meters using simple antennas and 1Watt TX power.

Take a look at this link if interested in that QSO and what might be to come in
future releases of WSJT:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wsjtgroup/message/4799

If you are interested in experimenting with this mode you can download the free
software at:

http://www.physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/index.htm

I think that a lot of very interesting experimentation is going on and we are
going to continue to hear about breakthrough uses of this technology. Thanks to
K1JT and others for all their hard work.

Nothing very specific...I've used a K2 on digital modes. Depending
on how old yours is, there is a modification that makes the VFO more
temperature stable, which is very helpful and almost essential if you
run MFSK as it is very intolerant of drift. Mine has the 100W
amplifier built into the main case, and the antenna tuner in a separate
box. Perhaps there is need for cooling improvement when using the
amplifier and digital modes.

Seems like somebody had a hack for bringing out the audio at a constant
level for putting into the sound card. I don't have that, but did make
a modification where plugging into the speaker jack does not cut off the
speaker, so I can get sound into the sound card and still hear what I am
receiving.

[digitalradio] Olivia Mode : Beaten by K2MO

2008-05-30 Thread Andrew O'Brien
-Tony, I did work Bruce AFTER your QRP signal vacated the airways and
left an opportunity for my 50 watts. There were a few Olivia signals
on 20M last night, a couple of QSOs at once...maybe Olivia is not dead
yet.

I am well, pinched nerves and various other ailments have subsided.
