[digitalradio] Re: I Hate Computers and Radio!!!! Interference.
Kevin, I went through that a couple years ago and discovered that the new power supply I had just purchased for $25 had no filters on the AC line. Homebrew filters helped a bit but a new Antec power supply (~ $30 after the rebate) solved the problem. If you open the power supply case you may find the spot where a line filter was left out to save you $1. I have tried another computer and even though it did generate some noise there, it was bareable with about an S2. As of yet I have not tried another power supply as this would require me to buy a new one (wife might get a bit upset about that one), I could pull one out of a spare computer but it's not as big as the one I have. I am about to do some googling to see if there is any mods on quieting the RF from them. Is there an easy; simple way to making this DAMM computer quieter Any ideas would be a help. RE: [digitalradio] I Hate Computers and Radio!!!! Interference.
Hi Kevin, Truly a frustrating problem. RF interference is one of the most maddening problems hams encounter. suggestions, some art, some science Get on e-bay and get some very long VGA extension cords, a wireless mouse/keyboard or buy some very long extensions and move the PC 6-8 feet, or more, away from the shack/antennas/coax. RF fields decay at inverse log of distance. Since really, all of the motherboard and power supply designs are essentially the same these days, you need to focus on case, in first iterations of this. Go to Fry's or other similar stores and replace the PC case with a heavier duty steel case, with fewer openings, which is the expense of $50-80 and the effort of rebuilding the case. But RF will come out of any wire or any open hole. Ferrite beads make a small, but incremental difference on all cable coming close to the hamshack. In my case, the problem was the VGA cables since there is a lot of switching of TTL coming through the cables, but, unlike your situation, my noise got progressively worse when windows loaded. Next, get online or local RF store and buy some very high quality coax cable, LM-470 double shield cable or other very well shielded coax and replace everything with it. More expense of connectors etc. but worth the expense. Again, all your cables cannot use more than 20 feet of cable and at $1-2/foot, not a huge expense Obviously, just my opinions. RF is an art form, not a science. The Switching Power Supply can cause interference, as you know. Other than replacing the computer power supply with a higher quality one, or making sure the power supply case has a good earth ground you might try putting ferrite beads over the power lines coming out of the power supply, albeit there are a number of them. [digitalradio] Re: An open letter: W1AW and 80m psk31 interference
I would like to put in a few words in defense of the ARRL. I learned the code prior to getting my novice license in 1955. At the time, that was just about the only way one could learn, at least on a kid's salary. These transmissions have been on forever, so I do question why this frequency was used as the primary PSK31 frequncy. W1AW was already there. And the ARRL has been our BEST friend. Hams work many modes, from CW (A1) through advanced digital and signal enhancement (spread spectrum). For me, ham radio led to a carreer as an electronics engineer, designing receivers, transmitters, and RF components for over 40 years. I am now retired, and am again active in Ham Radio. I think this gives me a long term, if quite personal, perspective on the subject. Re: [digitalradio] Re: An open letter: W1AW and 80m psk31 interference
I was about to reply to the question of why the choice of frequency for PSK31. I could not at the moment, but I see noone has addressed this point. It happens that 3.579545 MHz (NTSC color burst) were aboundant and rather cheap in the age of analog TV. So, they have been used in some designs I have seen of simple PSK equipment using the cristal for both carrier oscillator and pass band filters. If you have a normal ham transceiver, that is tunable, well, just rock the dial, and that is all about it. Buth those simple rock-bound PSK transceivers cannot QSY. 73, Jose, CO2JA PS: Who uses a tunable radio Participe en Universidad 2010, del 8 al 12 de febrero de 2010 La Habana, Cuba http://www.universidad2010.cu - SEGUNDO SEMINARIO INTERNACIONAL LEGADO Y DIVERSIDAD. AW: [digitalradio] I Hate Computers and Radio!!!! Interference.
Hello kevin Is your hamshack and computer on the same power outlet?? Try to use another outlet (maybe from next room with a long cable) . Has the noise gone or become lower ??? You can try to put a filter between the pc and the power outlet in the wall . Can be built for a few bucks 3 caps a bifilar wound coil and a resistor is all you need . If you are not a homebrewer these filters can be bought in almost any electronic store . There are several on the market .. (from 1A 1phase to 60A 3phase) Try out the ps of your other pc . You said it has lower power but for just trying out you can disconnect 2 of your 3 hd´s And you can also unplug your cd-rom and/or floppydisk cause you don´t need this for testing your rf noise problems If the noise is gone you have to talk with your wife (for the new ps) grin . I use a laptop for all my hamware . The power that the pc needs is lower on a laptop/notebook They are optimized in the power consumtion for longer battery life . Lower currents = lower noise The laptop has almost no internal wiring inside (just a few short cables) . No wires = no noise from them But surely changing your pc is not the solution you are looking for . Is the noise received in your antenna? (disconnect the antenna to check) I have a very very light noise from my notebook ps (just s1-s2 with preamp on) If I move the ps around a bit I can find a place where the noise is almost gone . So try out if changing the ps helps or build a inline filter that´s the best I can tell about your problem Good luck in finding a solution for your rf noise Cu on the bands Best 73´s de dg9bfc Sigi

In my opinion, the why isn't nearly as important as the fact that we have a problem on the band nowadays. The fixed frequency psk kits have been built and cannot easily be changed to another frequency. Why is an interesting question to prevent future problems like this, but we still need to find a solution for the current one. -- All rights reversed.

Easily changed by changing the crystal I guess, but then people have to decide which frequency to use for the crystal. Or substitute a VFO. So it seems we have color TV to blame for the fact that there is only one usable frequency on the 80M band. It's just a happenstance that the color TV frequency is in the CW portion of the 80 meter ham band. The amateur way has always been to QSY to get away from interference, rather than assigning exact channels to various users. I just don't have much sympathy for hams who marry themselves to a particular frequency because the crystal for it happens to be lying around everywhere. As for whether W1AW should listen before transmitting - I don't expect many of the QRP rigs that are stuck on that frequency are audible in Newington.

[digitalradio] TNC Startup scripts
Would anyone have a startup script txt file for a kam+ v 8.2 or give me some pointers on how to write one that will work. I tried my hand at it but the tnc doesn't respond to it. I would like to write an all mode script for the RCwinpacket program. Thanks
Re: [digitalradio] TNC Startup scripts
Haven't done one in a long time. Last I did, I had the KAM in command mode and waited for the prompt (cmd: ) to return to the screen between sending commands out from my laptop - a Tandy/Radio Shack Model 102 using it's native BASIC. Waiting for the prompt ensured that the previous command was processed and the KAM was ready for the next instruction, so to speak. Had it working, too, such that it would work properly when the KAM was in the autobaud mode. When it correctly read the autobaud prompt, it inserted the * to set the baud, then proceeded with the rest of the list. The above description will also work with modern scripting languages, too. 73, kevin kc6pob --- On Thu, 9/24/09, Chiefsfan2 chiefsf...@cox.net wrote: From: Chiefsfan2 chiefsf...@cox.net Subject: [digitalradio] TNC Startup scripts To: digitalradio@yahoogroups.com Date: Thursday, September 24, 2009, 5:05 PM Would anyone have a startup script txt file for a kam+ v 8.2 or give me some pointers on how to write one that will work.
