IT WORKED !! This is part of a sinister plot to take over the world. First it
puts you to sleep ... z... then I take over. BEWARE !!

I assume you were on LSB? Could have been WISP on 3.5926 USB which puts the
carrier on 35941 +/- a couple hundred kc. It almost sounds like a steady tone,
you have to listen carefully to detect that it is not.

It would also have been JT-65 on 3.576 USB, +/- a few hundred kcs. Lots of
activity on JT-65 around 14.076 USB. All data modes use USB.

JT-65 and WISP sound very different from each other.

Listening this morning (Monday) in the UK on 3633 kHz at around 0300
UTC, I heard a strange weebly-warbly digital signal that continued for
at least 15 minutes without a break (then it sent me to sleep).

The striking characteristic of the signal was that the data rate was
very low (a few bits per second?), and the transition between the tones
wasn't sharp -- it seemed as if each tone glided gracefully up/down to
the next.

At first I thought it was ROS, but I haven't heard ROS like this before.

Any ideas on provenance?

I think I'm working on the 'ultimate solution' here - a SDR radio and RSID
decoder where the RSID decoder analyses between 11.025 and 88.2kHz of
bandwidth.

I already have a digital decoder built into the console, the RSID will then
alert me and with one click I'll be decoding it.

Next year I hope to have a SDR receiver which delivers 30Mhz of bandwidth so
I can monitor the entire shortwave (or just Ham bands) for RSID & other
interesting transmissions.

A simple QRP Tx suitable for beginners, for example, is usually the ubiquitous
1 Watt 40m thing for CW that all the magazines and book seem include
ad-ad-naueam, built into sweet tins or whatever novel box they can think of. I
want to be different, and publish a design for RTTY. A simple varicap across a
crystal, needing a bit of applied science with SSB Rx and Spectrogram prog to
set the shift - all part of the basic learning process.

But to do that needs a way of driving the Tx with a wire that just waggles 1/0
with RTTY data - just like the mechanical teleprinters of old. So long as it
does it at 45 or 50 baud and is properly timed (perhaps not so easy using
Windoze - could this be why there's nothing out there?)

I wanted to steer away from a design that linearly upconverted from a soundcard
then filtered and amplified the result. The request was for "simple designs for
beginners"

2010-07-21 Thread Rudy Benner
JT8 is proposed as a possible alternative to JT4. Modulation is 8-FSK at 2.857
baud. FEC uses convolutional codes with K=14, r=1/4, K=15, r=1/6, or K=16,
r=1/8, depending on message length. Synchronization uses 8×8 Costas arrays at
the beginning and end of a transmission, followed by two additional symbols to
distinguish between 30-bit, 48-bit, and 78-bit messages. Total bandwidth is 23
Hz. At present, only the 78-bit messages have been implemented.

NUE PSK is great for back packing and mobile operation so long as only PSK
31 or RTTY is of interest. Computers offer a richer display with more options
and the ability to generate many different modes. The idea is to go directly
from the computer via IP to a back box that is broadband and can be remotely
located and is mode agnostic. Both approaches have their own advantages.

Will be interesting to compare this effort to the NUE-PSK, which takes a
different appoach. They have a modem that plugs directly into a transceiver' s
Data port eliminating the need for PCs and soundcards, but they are now working
on a "NUE-SDR" transceiver that either will fit as a card inside the little
modem, or attach underneath it (not sure what their final design will be).
This would eliminate both the PC and a separate transceiver.

NUE PSK is great for back packing and mobile operation so long as only PSK 31
or RTTY is of interest. Computers offer a richer display with more options and
the ability to generate many different modes. The idea is to go directly from
the computer via IP to a back box that is broadband and can be remotely
located and is mode agnostic.

Good morning all...

This has been interesting me since I read about it in QST last year. I, too,
have been looking to do some experimenting with this mode. Last year, I briefly
tested this by heading to my Churchabout 3.5 miles away. I brought along my
TINY Sony Vaio and my IC-2AT...and then set my FT-817 in receive with
DominoEX-8. With 100 mW, I had nearly solid print from the old 2AT and a
rubber-duckie antenna. With better antennas, one would think that significantly
better distances could be accomplished.

Too bad more don't experiment like this.

I was taught to listen first, then transmit. Hard to listen with the AF gain
all the way down. Once one is established on a frequency, turn it down, if you

Let me get this right. You want a station to ask if the frequency is in use.
That is understandable except he will be on RTTY and you are on another sound
card mode. Many times stations do not even have the audio running now. They
are just looking at a digital display and clicking on the signals. If it does
not look like a rtty signal then it is ignored.

I don't do contest either except for some at field day and some vhf and above
contest.

I agree. And while I have little or no interest in contesting, I can appreciate
it as being a big part of amateur radio and does have value in practice and
experience in understanding exchanges and band conditions/propagation. And for
a
great many people, it's just plain old fun.

But, there's really no excuse for ops to just pop on a frequency that is in
use.
What the 3 ops did on the net I was participating in last night was really
inexcusable.

I helped with a special event station yesterday and on ever qsy I first
listened
and put out 3 calls asking if the freq was in use. This procedure took about 1
minute of my time and I was assured that I was not interfering with a qso in
progress.

It's just common sense and common courtesy.

I dare say that if someone offered me one, I would probably take it, just for
the noise and the stink. I would charge admission. Mine had lots of roll paper,
paper tape etc,. It worked FB.

I like the digital modes and the weak signal software but its made things too
easy, not that I would want to turn back the clock. I would not want to wade
through all that again.

Just just retired at 62 and I am glad I did. Its nice being in the KMA club.

My first exposure to RTTY was an old genuine teletype machine with a crummy
interface. It was heavy, made a lot of noise, smelled great and I should never
have gotten rid of it.

As for CW, I learned it well enough to pass the exam. I used it only for MS.
I suppose I could relearn it.

I know this is out of fashion, but I really like PSK31, for its narrow
bandwidth and effectiveness with low power. It was the first mode I ever did
where I could have a QSO with a signal burried by the noise. I like some of
the newer modes, and am happy to see the popularity of Olivia and Contestia.
Of course, intellectually, I probably prefer CW to all of these, since its the
first digital mode, but I just never developed the skill I wanted in that mode.
RTTY was something as a new ham in the early 1960s that I badly wanted to do,
but teletypes were hard to get and life intervened, and I didn't actually do
any RTTY until recently. It was like driving a wonderful old car from the
1930s -- slow, inefficient, unwieldy, but neat just because it's old.

Wow Steinar. This really tells the true story about your (and mine) love for
RTTY (stoneage/museum,power wasting, polluting KW) KAANTEST MODE. TTY was
created for cables, not radio, I believe. Hi.

Re: [digitalradio] jt65-hf on 28.076

2010-07-05 Thread Rudy Benner
Back around 1990, I used to do meteor scatter on 2 meters THE OLD WAY. We did
not have fancy software, it was excruciatingly frustrating. Being in EN98, I
used to get people calling me at all hours of the night for skeds, would spend
huge amounts of time only to not be able to complete due to job requirements.
Working sucks.

EME was the realm of the rich, you had to have BIG GUNS. I managed one (1) EME,
and only because someone took pity on my poor link budget. I only had one
antenna and a mere 700 watts RMS.

Now that we have the nice weak signal software and spotting nets and
everything, its just too easy. 10 watts is enough, even with a modest hunk of
wire out the window.

Do I want to go back to doing the olde way? NOT !!! Having WAY too much fun. I
am retired and loving it.

I am a newbie on JT65A and have been using the JT65-HF sofware. It works well
and is easy to use. I've been enjoying the new (to me) mode.

I have been using this software for the past week and it is the best for
JT65A. I can find nothing I don't like about it. I have a netbook I am using
for digital radio and it very efficient and fast for decoding. Just remember,
it is for JT65A only.

Hi Andy,
i don't know how you're able to do it.
May be you run more than 1 session
Normally when i work JT65A i open concurrently JT65-HF1.051, WSJT7 and
Multipsk 4.17 and the only that decode multiple signals, same minute, is
JT65-HF.
If you want to do the same test you can discover what is the best
software.
It needs a big screen and it's better to set a slow watefarfall speed
for less CPU usage, especially for slow PC.

When I read my follow-up, I get confused. I would not be surprised if anyone
else also gets confused.

Its working, but I do not know why.

[digitalradio] Re: Newbie WSJT - Signalink USB - Vista

2010-03-22 Thread Rudy
Followup.

If I use the default devices of 1 and 6, it begins to receive and the transmit
goes to the sytem speaker. If I change default speaker (through windows) to the
Signalink port, then it seems to transmit. Of course then, any system sounds
are then ported to the radio.

I think I even saw a G6xxx CQ this morning on 20 meters.

Am I headed in the 'right' direction? WSPR was so easy.

[digitalradio] Newbie WSJT - Signalink USB - Vista

2010-03-22 Thread Rudy
I have the Signalink USB soundcard, actually I have 2 of them now. I have no
problem using it with HRD, WSPR, full rig control.

Comes time to use it on WSJT, I can get it to receive but only once. When I
transmit, the Tx audio goes to the system speakers, in spite of not being
configured to go there. Ok, no problem, close the app and restart. I then get a
an error message and the program closes. Yes, VISTA.

Here is the error message I get in the DOS window.

   20 2 Microsoft Sound Mapper - Output

40 2 Realtek HDMI Output (Realtek Hi
50 2 Realtek Digital Output (Realtek

Error opening input audio stream.

Error opening output audio stream.

Is this another clueless newbie problem that has been addresses a gazillion
times already?

Can some kind soul please set me upon the path again?
