Why not apologize for the unnecessary fuzz created around ROS while there was no definitive position from the FCC. I think Jose will then apologize for his apparent plans. Then all the fuzz is over. I hope this fuzz is showing us that we all have far to big ego's, and a lack of patience, understanding and compassion for others. Re: [digitalradio] MFTTY: It works
Rick, You are correct regarding bandwidth, there was several discussions awhile back regarding the 30 meter band where some argued that we were restricted to 500Hz, I didn't subscribe to this and I thought 1Khz was acceptable. Anyway my thoughts are based on what space is available so as not to cause QRM to other users on the band, what I see from the MFTTY widths when selecting a mode is anywhere from narrow (29Hz) to (986Hz) plus a S/N ratio of -27 to 8db. The normal mode (speed) provides 75wpm at 936Hz (bw) and a 0db SNR were as the 1/2 speed provides a 38wpm at 468Hz (bw) and a -3db SNR. Frankly I believe that Olivia and Thor will accomplish the needs of digital operators better. Thanks for your input I learn something every day. Happy Holidays and a safe and wonderful 2009 to you and the family 73 de Ron W4LDE Rick W wrote: Ron, Although I am not strongly supportive of wide bandwidth modes in what has historically been the narrower portions of the HF bands, I will use 1000 or even 2000 Hz modes under conditions where a given band is almost devoid of signals, or under severe conditions. This is not a criticism, but where do you find any reference to an allowed bandwidth? There are no specific HF digital frequencies that I am aware of here in the U.S.It is true that on the HF bands we have RTTY/Data portions and phone/image portions. Digital modes can be used throughout the bands based upon the type of information to be transmitted. (The third symbol in the ITU Classifications of Emissions). The one change in the past few years was allowing image (fax), whether digital or analog, in the RTTY/Data portions of the HF bands, providing the emission is 500 Hz or narrower. But non-phone emissions have no specific bandwidth limit except that they may not exceed the bandwidth of a communications quality phone emission of the same modulation type. There is a special restriction for stations in automatic operation where there can be a 500 Hz limitation. But there is no such limitation with operators communicating from their control points. Finally, there are band plans from various groups, particularly the IARU and while they appear at times to not properly reflect current actual operating practices, they can be used as a guide. 73, Rick, KV9U w4lde wrote: Russell, Thanks for the #1 MFTTY QSO on 30 meters. Russell, Thanks for the #1 MFTTY QSO on 30 meters. [digitalradio] Noise Folow up
Original post by Ron W4LDE If this question is inappropriate for the reflector I apologize but as of last Friday 9-5-08 I started to experience significant noise (S-9) on all bands from 160 through 15M with the lower frequencies much stronger. I thought that it was due to power line noise but it appears to be intermittent in that it completely disappeared last Friday evening but once again showed up last Saturday and stayed this way. On the Ft1000mp the noise blankers are completely ineffective. At the same time I started having internet problems and the cable company indicated they should have the speed issue fixed by Tuesday. The cables are run on poles until they enter a subdivision which then run underground. My question is can cable lines be the possible problem to HF frequencies? The power and cable companies have been installing new poles and running new lines in the area which initially led me to believe it was a power issue however, while I was writing this email the noise completely disappeared for a few seconds and then reappeared. As I was looking out my window I noticed a cable company buck truck through the woods towards the main road, I am off now to talk to them and see what I can discover. Any suggestions? --Follow up !!! 9-15-08 -- On 9-8 I contacted the local power company via email regarding the above, unexpectedly I received a call from the Maintenance Manager who stated don't worry we will be out maybe tomorrow and find the cause. They did show up, two buck trucks and full crews plus a 332-335 MHz Yagi and noise receiver. Unfortunately they said that they couldn't find anything and suggested it might be from a neighbors home. They scanned my home but couldn't find a thing. I was one unhappy ham and expressed that they needed to keep looking. I believe I have ruled out a radio problem since the noise was about the same on a FT-1000mp and a FT-847 and neither noise blanker would dent the noise. A MFJ-Noise phasing unit helped some but only improved the noise by about 1-2 S-units. I spent some time connecting and disconnecting home devices plus disconnecting one house breaker at a time. Friday the 12th I decided that maybe I could help find the problem and using a Yaesu VX-5R and rubber ducky at 134MHz and also at 329MHz AM started my search. I found significant noise at three different power poles, all new ones, with two west of my antenna about 1/8 mile and the other to the east at also about 1/8 mile. So I thought I had found the problem and would be reporting this condition today. When I came into the shack this AM to compose the email I happen to turn on the rig and to my amazement the noise was gone. eleven days I had a Ham Radio Black out on the low bands. Was I one happy guy. I thought I better go check out the poles. Off I went and yes the noise was gone at the poles, very quite. Went out later this afternoon and took the VX-5R, things were still quite up and down the main road. After being gone for three hours as I was approaching the sub-division I turned the VX-5R back on and WAM there was the same power poles and noise. My heart sunk, O-Sh_t I shouted and my XYL who understood the situation gave me her famous look and said keep on looking, write the reflector they can help. Well after arriving home and one hour later in the shack I turned on the radio and found NO significant noise. S-0 on 20-meters, S-2-3 on 30 meters and maybe as high as S-4 on 40M, at 4PM thats not bad. I was amazed once again and kinda dumb founded as to were to look next if I have to. Here's some of my thoughts, 1. Today for the first time in the past few weeks we finally had a cool day, high around 80 (occurred around 5PM) and a low tonight of 60 a) Lower temps caused all connections to tighten and when it finally warmed up around 4-5pm it started again at the poles. 2. Since there is still home building going on near us as the crews were leaving the construction site a week ago maybe they left chargers on for there power equipment and after doing there thing finally turned them off this AM and left the site. 3. I did find out that the telephone company was having lots of noise problems from there own installation. Not at my home but close. a) Can't believe thats the fix since the noise stopped early on Monday which didn't give them much time to complete the task, they started last Wednesday. 4. Cool days, less power consumed by the A/C units, less amps, less noise (is it s stretch?) Ok I thought, maybe I should invest in a 144/440 hand held yagi plus the cables and adapters to help in a wider search area but wanted recommendations as to what I should be looking at if the noise returns I would be using the VX-5r on 138 am MHz and 332 am MHz. Any thoughts are appreciated. I believe I have ruled out a radio problem since the noise was about

Congratulations Ross and thanks for the response to my questions earlier, do you or anyone know if 3.01 will work with a Ft1000mp through the microkeyer? I have 3.01 working correctly with the PPT function in microkeyer but the program with the built in CAT function does not discover the com port for the CAT function. Once I get it to discover the CAT port then I can begin to use the rig.xml file. I did select the correct port in the rig.xml file to match the setup for the microkeyer but can not seem to get the internal rig cat function to discover the FT1000mp through the microkeyer. Did it discover the K3 through the microkeyer using the internal RigCat method? Andy (K3UK) has successfully got his CAT function working through the HAMlib but I wish I don't have to move in that direction. Anyone else out there in digi world using 3.01 with a MicroHam microkeyer and has had luck with the internal RigCat function of discovery? 73 de Ron W4LDE Ross wrote: I have been trying to make FLDigi work on my K3, finally it does... [digitalradio] Open wire feed line length
After reading several articles both on and off the WEB regarding a center fed antenna, only one article mentioned a recommended length for the feed line. My shack is located on the second floor of a new home, (24') #8 ground wire to 8' ground stake with a further connection to the common ground point for the power and the rebar in the pored walls and flooring of the basement, telephone and cable. I plan on additional ground rods around the property and at a new tower. In a new home so progress is on-going. The 1:1 current balum used to convert the 450 ohm balance line is external to the tuner, use about two feet of coax from the balum to the tuner. Antenna is cut for 80 meters and using about 60-70 ft of line to center of the antenna. Where the antenna lines leave the shack is about four 4 ft from the location inside of the rig and floor mounted PC. I use the antenna on all bands until such time I complete a new tower installation. I want to minimize stray RF around the shack since I rely on a PC and digital sound card as my primary source for ham enjoyment. I have already had some problems with a USB keyboard that I think may have been effected by RF when running over 50 watts on 20 meters only. One article recommended odd multiples of a wave length is desirable at the lowest operating frequency while other articles don't address this. I am having no problem with a match using the tuner on all bands 80-6 meters. Have used the center fed antenna since 1976 but always had the shack on the ground level and had a good and effective ground system short runs with feed lines around the 90 to 100ft in length. never had a RF problem or surge problem. Pactor comes in 3 varieties I, II III. MultiPSK will decode Pactor-I but for Pactor II III you need some very specialized and expensive software/hardware. Currently I know of only Hoka Code 300 and the Wavecom decoders which will even attempt it. Prices range from around $8000 and up! Outside the ham bands there is little that can be successfully decoded these days. These include Weather FAX, Aviation/WX RTTY (very little nowadays), SITOR (again not much these days), HFDL, GMDSS DSC, Stanag 4285 (usually only test tapes), occasional ARQ-E stations, ALE, CW (eg Cuban spooks) but also some Far Eastern maritime stations still use CW. Interestingly the Cuban 'numbers stations' are experimenting right now with RDFT and also PSK220F which I believe is only available in MultiPSK Most RTTY stations you hear outside the ham bands are not RTTY at all. They often use a synchronous system and are encrypted so a normal RTTY decoder wouldn't make any sense of it. MultiPSK can also decode GMDSS DSC messages and VHF ACARS at present. Does anyone in the 30MDG or Digital Radio group have an opinion on where PropNet could find a home on 30m without causing a problem? I am thinking they either need to go back to where they were or move up to something like 10.141.2 (USB vfo). But would this impact PSK31 DX? I know the PropNet vs JT65 thing is not at the top of many people's list but it's making JT65 impossible on 30m right now. 73, Sholto KE7HPV. Tom, Where are you located since I have heard the same noise, it comes and goes, QTH is central Florida. Next time I hear it I will start turning the beam and see what I see as the direction of the noise. Most of the time it seems to shift in frequency where I hear it which would probably indicate that its skip and not local. Re: [digitalradio] 30 meter PSK
Problem with using the actual VFO settings is that some might be using the high tone set while others are using a low tone set. Then the frequency could be off by as much as 1kc. I recommend that we all start using the VFO plus the audio frequency or waterfall frequency. That would work unless you were using the FSK method to key the rig verses the audio input from the sound card. Looks like we can't please everyone, thats why I use the low tones from my rig on FSK-RTTY, usually that gets me close to the signal since users of USB-RTTY have a default of somewhere from 1000 to 2000hz as there default Ron W4LDE John Becker wrote: Well really that should be RTTY Amtor and Pactor along with some other modes that have fixed offset. I had an exciting introduction to JT65A the day before you published your document. After reading about this mode on this group for several weeks I finally downloaded and installed it last Friday. Since my computer has multiple sound cards, the information in the DOS window was essential for selecting the correct input and output sound card numbers. After getting it set up I hit the monitor button and watched the trace for awhile (7076 KHz). I couldn't hear anything but wondered what that faint line was on the waterfall. I was astounded when ZS6WN popped up in the text window with -23 dB SNR. After sending a few replies it was a thrill to see his response. The only thing I would suggest adding is a little more explanation about how to use the information in the DOS window to select sound card numbers for the input and output with multiple sound cards installed on the computer. Re: [digitalradio] 30M operations
Danny, Over the past few years I have been active on 30M digital and CW mostly in the evening hours from central Florida, I find the band open late into the evenings unless we get s soar storm or very low SFI. I have worked all over the world both CW and on digital. It is funny to hear a dead band until a DX cluster post puts some strange DX station on then the band comes to life, hundreds of stations. When it comes to digital I try to stay away from the 10.140 and up unless I hear a DX station, to many packet automatic stations. Have had several QSO's ended because of auto QRM. There is a station down around 10.132 (Commercial or military) that I use as a gauge as to band condx. I know the movement is to utilize 10.142 but thats right in the middle of those packy pests. Usually I hear stateside around 10.138 plus or minus, have worked Hell, PSK, MFSK, Olivia and RTTY. DX on PSK and RTTY up above 10.140 30 meters is a fun band where we are restricted to 200w and usually have to rely on a good antenna. Gee that takes me back to my earlier 1950's days when 100 watts was big power! I urge everyone to utilize a low activity band, hope to meet up with you soon. Re: [digitalradio] Re: New 80m USA Keyboarding Digi Frequencies
Bonnie, I like your idea but there is a group thats really taking it on the chin with your band plan, Our digital cousins, the Gen and Adv CW operators prior to 12-15 had 200 KC to operate, now their down to 75, you suggest pushing them down between 3525 and 3545 or 20 KC. 1/10 of what they had while the other digital modes grab half of the available 100KC segment, and with ?KC for automatic operations. Personnel y I think thats a little unrealistic, when a DX CW station comes on below 3525 then the CW QSO above take another hit. Maybe its a sign of the coming times, drop CW and make the entire 100KC segment digital, I hope not, no incentive to upgrade the license, not having to work for it and therefore cherishing the accomplishment and the ticket. Unfortunately the new rules will be the rules, lets not forget about the CW users whom have as much right to the 100KC segment, lets share the frequencies, use the smallest space possible, lowest power for a QSO and respect each others use for the gift that we all enjoy. I would suggest that any unattended digital mode be removed form the band plan. Lets respect each others right to enjoy a keyboard to keyboard QSO. Ron W4LDE . Re: [digitalradio] digital modes and THE RADIO
Rick, Yes I had trouble printing 100% of what Mac WN3C was transmitting during the inital 8/500 contact, we did go to 16/500 and the print came back to 90%. After discussing the settings with Mac it became apparent that there was several issues that was causing problems on Mac's end. The amount of drive, the DSP settings, et. What I forgot to mention to him was turn off the audio processing, occasionally I have left it on and have had troubles. I have operated Olivia for almost two years, on 80-40-30 and 20 meters and I can honestly say most QSO's are 100% copy regardless of the bit and width settings. I have worked stations running less than one watt on both 40 and 80 meters as an experiment and received 100% copy on both ends. I think that the biggest problem with the new rigs and digital soundcard software is, how to setup the rig as you have concluded and so stated. People are still looking for some ALC when they should adjust none, no processing at all and at reduce power. The other problem is there choice of operating tones with respect to the passband of the transmitter. One should look at the waterfall display for the mode there using (USB) and use the center of the passband where there is little chance of clipping when transmitting. The software writers have made digital easy to use, now its our turn as operators to understand what mode, what width and at what power level can provide the best communications for the given conditions. It was a new learning experience for me and I have just scratched the surface. Its fun and thats another reason I have been a HAM since 1957. Heck if you hear us on again please jump in and say hello, we need more round tables and activity on 30 meters. 73 Ron W4LDE KV9U wrote: As Doug Smith has pointed out, the group delay issue on amateur gear can be challenging, even with training. The ionosphere is very unforgiving. Any tests you can do would be great. Have you considered discussing this with the Digital Voice Working Group at ARRL? They have gone through quite a bit of review on this and have also criticqued several different digital voice protocols, some of which can be used for either voice or data. You are probably already aware that ARRL publishes committee reports under the announcements part of the arrl web site. Then you can look for updates by year on the Technology Task Force or working group reports HSMM, Digital Voice, SDR, etc. I was listening to W4LDE and WN3C on Olivia just now. In fact they were just signing off when I started writing this message and are wondering if anyone has had problems with using Olivia with the faster baud rates on 30 meters as they were experiencing a few minutes ago when they were using the 8-500 mode. I was copying both stations fairly well until signals got weaker on one of them. They switched to 16-500 with a significant improvement for them and for me to copy them as well. However, Olivia is under 20 wpm in that mode and is excruciating slow from my perspective. 73, Rick, KV9U Mark Miller wrote: Rick, Yes group delay is an issue, but with adaptive training this too can be overcome. Sound cards, or external modems using DSP or preferably FPGA's would be a fine compliment to most amateur gear. The SDR (software defined radio) that Jose mentioned will be the best solution going forward for more exotic modems. These modems would be an integral part of the radio. I was looking for a good way to test group delay, and was thinking of generating an FM signal with 3 to 5 KHz deviation and looking for an envelope at the output of the receiver. Does that sound ok? The signal generator is an HP 5640B. 73, Mark N5RFX Another thing that I came across in my web searching was that amateur equipment generally has group delays that make it difficult to even employ some of the modems we have been discussing. Re: [digitalradio] Re: digital modes and THE RADIO
Thats typical with most rigs, I have a FT1000mp and i notice a significant variance in Power out depending on where in the passband I am, thats why when and before I start a QSO through my CAT interface I issue a macro command to move the receiving frequency to where I want it in the passband, I do not have to fiddle with the audio settings at all. Ron W4LDE Brett Owen Rees VK2TMG wrote: I have noticed that my tx power varies depending upon where I am in the passband. Re: [digitalradio] Soundcard mystery.
Mel, Is it possible that you start on a different audio frequency and that the passband on the rig behaves differentially? Try different frequency settings on the same band example 75o hz, 1000hz 1500 hz and notice the difference in drive levels needed for the same power out. Ron W4LDE Mel wrote: Hello everyone, I know nothing about computers and soundcards so can anyone explain why I have this problem? I use Quickmix to hold the correct PSK settings for each band I operate, and this works mostly OK, with one exception, and that is 20 metres. I have to disconnect the rig after every operating session because my shack is in the garden. Each time I re-connect the rig, I load the 20 metre setting, and every time I have to re-adjust it. Quickmix sets it in the same place then I find the ALC is showing so I make the correct adjustment and re-load the new setting into Quickmix and then everything is OK The following day I have to go through the same procedure again, but only on 20 metres. Why should the VOL setting on the PC be OK for 20 metres one day, but not the next.? Sometimes the variation in the setting on the VOL scale is quite noticeable.I use an ACC1 cable. Joe I would recommend 7.090 as a starter and probably 14.10850 to establish a QSO and then maybe move a few up or down? Re: [digitalradio] what is that signal on 7090
John, Most QSO you hear on 7090 are OLIVIA, some MT-63 but if it was in the night time most likely it was either W3OQ, N3WT, W1OER, DX and others. Please come join in the fun, A great free-ware program, MultiPSK, provides just about all of the current sound-card digital modes plus some. The QSO's are on USB using the 500Hz shift centered on 750Hz. Join in its a great low power bad band condition digital mode. Re: [digitalradio] Re: QSL info for Digital modes
Leigh, Yes, to both questions but in reality that would be asking a lot from the software developers. Heck I don't care if I have to manually enter the mode for any specific QSO, my current logging software does a great job of automatically entering the mode from the approved ADIF mode list. What I would like at this time is a consensus on what current approved digital mode we should use for logging of Olivia QSO's, thus exchange electronically becomes less cumbersome. - Original Message - From: Leigh L Klotz, Jr. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wednesday, September 7, 2005 9:13 pm Subject: Re: [digitalradio] Re: QSL info for Digital modes Would you all like to be able to record Olivia paramaters (width, tones) as well or should all Olivia modes be just Olivia? Re: [digitalradio] Re: Seeking PSK QSO's on 30 and 40 meters
Paul, Lots of activity every evening around 7071 USB (PSK) some MFSK up a little, Olivia activity up on 7090.00 with a center audio frequency of 750 Hz. Some MT63 around 7091.00. Have heard RTTY between 7080 and 7090 plus some down around the DX frequencies of 7035. You will also hear DX PSK there. On 30 meters listen between 10135 and 10140 for PSK, RTTY MFSK and others all centered around 10138 again on USB. Looking for more 30 meter digital from everyone. I mostly work and hear the DX but not that much activity state-side unless there is some DX on the band. Remember if your looking for a QSO, give a CQ since a lot of us are listening.
