Re: [IxDA Discuss] Adaptive UIs (web or otherwise)
@ JenniferVignone - Their sales because of the technique would have told them otherwise if it wasn't working. @ Danny - We already know users don't know themselves very well. That is why we don't ask, but observe. @ Jeff - Dangerous situations I can probably think of is Air Traffic Controller Interfaces. Adaptive systems could prescribe procedures for certain situations, but for you to trust it you will need to have catered for ALL possible situations and that is rarely possible (right now). The example they used in the study shows content being presented differently, but the details of the content stayed the same. So if the system guessed incorrectly your cognitive style, you would still be getting the information you expect when you clicked on a link; it would just be presented differently. For e-commerce purposes they would probably track their accuracy by improved sales and by comparing their predicted content between different, but similar cognitive users. Regarding the Amazon example: Amazon usually ask you if you are User X and if not, click here. This will remove details of the previous user and new predictions will be based on your surfing, You can't really blame Amazon's predictive system, if you lied to them about who you are, by continue browsing as someone else. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Prototyping GOMS
Hi, I'm the PI on the CogTool Project and I want to assure you that we are continuing work and will have a new release in Fall 2008. Most of the new features are already working, have been tested with internal users on real projects, and we are now concentrating on documentation, so the new release is really coming. We have made a lot of usability improvements (yes, we've used CogTool on our designs for CogTool as well as think-aloud usability studies and other HCI techniques). So hopefully some of the frustrations Santiago mentions have been taken care of in the next release. As with any software development project, we are juggling our resources and priorities, so we can't fix everything for the next release, but if you send us requests and bugs, we'll do our best. In terms of using CogTool for building prototypes, we have made a lot of improvements. Its very efficient now to make menu systems and systems of related widgets like radio buttons and list boxes. And you can export your prototypes to HTML to share with folks who don't want to download CogTool or use as a basis for quick-and-dirty user testing. So please keep watching and let us know what you think. Bonnie John . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . However, I don't believe a good design program could be done as a solely online course. It's been debated on the list in the past, but the studio experience is an important part of design education. An online course would also curtail the ability to do group projects, which I feel are necessary. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Jonas Lowgren on the dichotomy of practice in IxD
Sebi, I agree (if I understand your point) that the 2 approaches are not exclusive, but rather together can provide great value to one another. I believe though for myself that in N. America we need to do more to bring out the design discipline side. I've actually been germinating an article in my head with the title, Silicon Valley is killing Interaction Design. I think this b/c I think that the engineering and rational focus of SV IxD pushes down the more aesthetic and emotional sides of IxD practice here in North America. I'm not saying that this phenomena is ONLY in SV, but SV has such a critical mass of IxD practice in N. America that its influence is huge. To the point that IxD on the east coast which one would think would be more aesthetic due to its influences of media and advertising, really isn't. Most organizations still separate design from user experience (yes there are exceptions) where user experience is where IxD roles (usually as info arch titles) are done. Now a lot of this is also b/c creatives in these two old communities take on a whole other polemic, but also because of how we train and discuss IxD here in the US is really based on the experiences from SV. Like I said, it is just a hypothesis for now, but to me this is why an Masters of Fine Arts in IxD is so interesting to me. It goes in the face of this trend which to me is just what the doctor ordered. That being said, a good IxD program that didn't also cover standard HCI courses like cognitve and social psyche and basic HCI research technologies would be pretty sub-standard to me as much as a program that didn't have dedicated studio courses. -- dave On Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 7:09 AM, Sebi Tauciuc [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: 2 converging divergent approaches, I would say - at least that's one point I think the article is trying to make. Bonnie - could you give us a basic idea about what CogTool does--and how it might be applied? From the site, I seem to believe this is used to model efficiency along a single path. Assuming individual flows within a storyboard could be widely variable in terms of completion time, would you use this tool to identify those as areas to think more critically about? Also, do you believe this could be applied to an environment that supports multiple ways of achieving a goal? The tutorial leads me to think no, but it's entirely possible I've missed the point. :) -Todd http://www.oombrella.com oombrella /a/ gmail.com Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Setting a usability lab on a budget
Interesting article. It focuses on in-person testing. I'm wondering what kind of experience you have had with remote testing? This is pretty easy to do with UserVue and a telephone. We have done it with the test moderator in one location, observers in another and the test participant at his or her home or work computer. It worked fairly well except that the observers tended to goof off after a bit. They were listening in on a conference call and watching the user's screen on a monitor. I'm with Jared on this one ... My opinion: Usability labs are a senseless waste of glass and furniture. http://www.uie.com/articles/streamlining_usability/ The linked article says it all, but in short: -) A formal lab seriously freaks some users out, especially Type A finance folks -) Same for webcams, though those are useful for documenting facial reactions (grimacing, confusion, smiles, surprises) -) Having the observers in the room makes everyone feel more comfortable and connected. The end-of-test feedback session is a lot more effective as a result -) My usability lab fits in my pocket If you really need to capture screen movements and audio, Morae and UserVue tend to be the tools to use; you can usually spare a laptop or other machine on which to perform the tests. Otherwise, the most stuff you need is a pad of paper, something to pay users with, and stakeholders to observe and have their minds blown :-). - Nasir Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Setting a usability lab on a budget
I'm wondering what kind of experience you have had with remote testing? For remote tests, even a simple tool like Windows NetMeeting, GoToMyPc, WebEx, etc. does the trick. It's best if the facilitator and observers are in the same room to minimize the goofing off you mentioned. WebEx has the advantage of being able to record the screen and any audio from the phone. You may even be able to get it to capture video. You don't necessarily need recorded footage get the point across, since the observers see what you see, but they can help when you have people that don't attend who need proof in the pudding that there is, indeed, a problem with a product. - N Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! From: visual hokie [EMAIL PROTECTED] : Does anyone have (or can point me to) any data, research, or articles that : demonstrate the relationship between number of form fields and completion : rate? : Thanks! : : brian Hi Brian I don't know of any specific research on this problem in the forms arena. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence around - just ask anyone, frankly. For example, in a recent thread on this list http://www.ixda.org/discuss.php?post=27398 Sign-up experience there was some discussion of the pleasure given by a short, simple sign-up and the annoyance caused by a very long one. But I don't know of much in the way of hard facts. It would be great to hear of anything published - let's hope someone else on the list knows. The survey methodologists have looked at the problem of lower response rathers when there are more questions on a questionnaire, a closely related area. I'm away from my library at the moment but I'm fairly sure that Dillman would cite the relevant literature. Most recent edition: Mail and Internet Surveys: The Tailored Design Method 2007 Update with New Internet, Visual, and Mixed-Mode Guide (Hardcover) by Don A. Dillman (Author) Another thing to think about (I don't know of the context of your question) is that although sheer volume of questions is definitely an issue, the relevance of those questions and the strength of the user's interest in the topic are very important as well. There is, believe it or not, such a thing as a form or questionnaire that is too short - one that fails to ask the questions that the user considers should be asked in the context of the overall purpose.
