Re: [IxDA Discuss] Forms design / labels inside the fields
Hi Maciej Everyone had given you good feedback already, but just to stick my oar in... From what I have read and seen demonstrated with eye-tracking heatmaps (but not from first-hand experience), label placement inside text boxes can cause a bit of trouble. People often look for labels to the left of a text box, for example, so it might be weird when it isn't there. Plus, and form element that appears to me completed already can sometimes be ignored (in fact, thinking about it, I have seen that in a test). However, you or I probably wouldn't be deterred by that kind of label placement, so it depends on experience. As Christina says, test test test. Jarrett and Gaffney have some really good stuff on forms in their book, too. I think they would say that if the form is well design overall, and the user is engaged in a dialogue with the form, then the label placement is not such a big deal... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Visualizing User Experience
One visualization I have referenced for years to explain what we do (literally, almost a decade now) is on Nathan Shedroff's site. http://www.nathan.com/thoughts/process/ Everyone's nomenclature is different for the phases and activities, and as the industry has evolved I think we can agree some steps are missing. But the fact that it shows so many of the puzzle pieces in context to others is great, and%u2014bonus%u2014it doesn't freak clients out. This visualization has inspired me many times over the years. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Facebook Redesign
I disagree with your analysis that it is an easily navigable site when compared to the previous incarnation with respect to three common tasks that users perform on this page. 1) Task: Navigate to Groups/Events Cause: Lack of persistent navigation features In the incarnation before this one there was a set of buttons in the lower left of the window (modifiable) that were always present regardless of the screen you were on within fb. So no matter where you were, a single click would take you to your Events/Groups/Happy Aquarium/whatever. It had a nice form factor and didn't clutter the screen. What a person now has to do is navigate back to your home page by clicking a link at the very top of the page (and heaven forbid you are scrolled to the bottom of a screen), and then click on the appropriate item on the left. 2) Task: View updates Cause: Position and temporariness (sic) of the Notifications item This is really very similar to the first item, but I enjoyed the permanence of the Notification area in the bottom right. It was out of the way enough that I could open it and then click through each of the items, read all of the status notification update items (for instance, see that a number of my friends replied to a certain status and read those replies), and then once I was at the bottom of that string click on the next item from the update window. Two things happen now to make that more difficult. First, once you click the Status link to see how a person has commented on the status, the Notification window disappears. So immediately I need to re-open that window after reading through one thread of items. This task is then made more difficult by the fact that the Notification window is not a permanent feature on the page. So after I have scrolled down through each reply to a status I have to scroll to the top again, re-open the Notification window area, and then choose the next item. 3) Task: Logout Cause: Logout is not a main page item now This one gets my goat the most. Not only is it an inconvenience issue, but the inconvenience of it gives rise to potential security issues. In the version before this one you could Logout from any page with a single click. You can still Logout from any page, but it requires that you open a menu item and then choose to do so. Because of the added step, users will probably be more likely to just close the browser tab/window. There is nothing to say they weren't doing this before, but in using Gmail and banking websites I had come to think that Logout is a common function (that is typically the conclusion of any session) that should always be available. My gf suggested that this was because facebook relies on advertising, and so they want to discourage users from logging out - which to me seems absurd enough that I hope that is not the case. Conclusion: These tasks seem like very common tasks, and are staples of every facebook session that I personally engage in. Insofar as a redesign should at least consider the tasks that users engage in and seek to simplify those I feel that this redesign has failed in the above three regards. [IxDA Discuss] Facebook on Google Buzz: How Well Does That Friendship Model Work?
FYI Sent to you by jtang via Google Reader: Facebook on Google Buzz: How Well Does That Friendship Model Work? via ReadWriteWeb by Jolie O'Dell on 2/9/10 While end users are eager to try out Google Buzz for themselves, many of the Web's largest social properties have expressed a certain amount of fear, uncertainty and doubt about the search giant's move into the social space. A Facebook rep said that the company is interested to see how Google's latest product will make the Web more social and more open, but the Facebook team has their concerns about whether Buzz's friendship model is really all that functional. After a little bit of messing around with the new product today, we can understand their point of view. Sponsor ReadWriteWeb's full coverage and analysis of Google Buzz: We're supportive of technologies that help make the web more social and the world more open, a Facebook rep wrote to us today, and we're interested to see how Google Buzz progresses over time. However, the Facebooker had words of warning about Buzz's hazy friendship model. To offer a brief explanation, Google has taken users' Gmail inboxes and Google Talk IM contacts and programmatically tried to determine with whom users communicate most frequently. Users can share Buzz posts with the world (and Google search), or they can share privately through their existing Gmail groups or custom-made groups in Buzz. For more detail, take a look at this demo video: Google Buzz seems to involve an asymmetric follower/friend model, but we're not completely sure how friendships and shared posts will work. As our Facebooker wrote, The continued growth of the social web will be determined by people and personal relationships. The people that you email and chat with the most may not be your closest friends or the people that you want to share and connect with. We can definitely understand this point of view. Some folks rarely use Gmail to communicate with their closest friends and family members because they see them in person or use other networks to get in touch. On the flip side of that coin, as more of us are using Gmail for work communication, it might be irrelevant or overly personal to follow and share with professional contacts. All in all, one of our biggest concerns about Buzz adoption (being able to play nicely with existing social apps) carries over into this part of the conversation, as well: In addition to creating best guesses for who to friend and follow using Gmail Google Talk, why doesn't Google simply use Twitter OAuth and Facebook Connect to import existing friendships? What do you think? Will Google Buzz's friendship model work? Or does Facebook have a point about having carefully user-approved friendships online? Jarod, There are very good reasons why we don't encourage cross posting entire articles from the web. We have over 10,000 members. There are perhaps 100s of articles of interest to the IxD community posted every day. Imagine getting thousands of articles clogging up you inbox everyday. Snippets of articles with commentary and thoughtful reflection are great, but simply cross posting articles from the web would quickly get out of hand, clog our email servers, and ultimately hurt our community. [IxDA Discuss] A New Interaction Design Educational Program
Hi, I'm pleased to announce a new educational institution, focused on interaction design and social entrepreneurship. We are presently accepting applications for September, 2010. Austin Center for Design exists to transform society through design and design education. This transformation occurs through the development of design knowledge directed towards all forms of social and humanitarian problems. The center explicitly tackles problems related to: - Homelessness and transient housing solutions - Healthcare access, affordability, and comprehension - Nutrition, personal wellness, and consumption - Education and job placement - Poverty, as a general state of being - Sustainability and environmental impact The Center offers an innovative curriculum that repositions creative design education in the context of designing for the public sector. Students learn the interdisciplinary skills of creative design thinking, as applied to solving complicated problems of society and culture. These skills broadly include divergent thinking, ideation, visualization, synthesis, prototyping, and the managing of complexity and data organization. Students use these skills to develop systems, services, products, and new business models that address pressing social issues. You can learn more about the Austin Center for Design at http://www.austincenterfordesign.com/ Thanks, Jon Kolko Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interaction Design Training (non web preferred)
Nearly all of what I've heard and experienced about all of these kinds of things is that you end up with people who aren't designers (engineers, product managers, etc.) and because of the audience do a lot of basic stuff and then a good chunk of group exercises that aren't all that useful if you're already a practicing designer. If I were you I'd explicitly ask what kind of people will be attending. Will be interested to hear if anyone recommends anything for people who are already reasonably competent practitioners. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
