[IxDA Discuss] Static or dynamic behaviour modalities for Itsme OS
We recently opened a discussion on itsme website to discuss the possibility of having a static or dynamic behaviour for the frame panels in itsme OS (find the discussion here http://itsme.it/news/2009/10/20/static-or-dynamic-interaction/). By static behaviour i mean the point click technique that gives a more static and intentional interaction with the panels, but reflects what we normally do in the existing operating systems and in a large number of applications (see image below). On the other hand, the interaction with the mouse-over is really dynamic: the interface becomes very fast and fluid in reacting to the movement of the pointer, following the user focus. This kind of behavior is now quite diffused in some web-based applications (see image below: Nokia N900) I know as far as the itsme OS is concerned the choices should be made as per what fits our interaction model better, the coherency with other modalities and user testing. But we can always weigh the pros and cons of static vs dynamic behaviour. Is there any user insights, any research, or any leads you can provide me with that might help us making a firm first decision. thanks in advance Nikhil Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! [IxDA Discuss] HTC hero - what are your thoughts?
Did i miss a discussion on this one ? Or it hasnt been discussed here as yet (shockingly) Anyway so HTC Sense, is what the new interface is called of HTC hero which is the third Android powered device presented on the market but is the first huge customization of Android. It has couple of interesting features. HTC envisions the relations between the person and his interactions with other people. Here is the video of the launch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DXD9ag4P50eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fitsme.it%2Fnews%2F2009%2F07%2F08%2Fhtc-hero%2Ffeature=player_embedded The concept is quite similar to what itsme O.S introduces as well http://itsme.it/news/2009/06/16/envisioning-relations/ Relations are going to be of prime importance in the ID process Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! [IxDA Discuss] itsme EMULATOR online now - Evaluate!!
Hi everyone I have already shared couple of phases of the design and development process of the itsme project with you all from the very start to the concept evaluation. Now is the itsme EMULATOR. We recently launched the emulator online. The first piece of software that incorporates the concept behind itsme (the metaphor, stories and venues) waiting for you to be explored. The emulator, however, is not only a demonstrator to itsme: it also represents a new example of a support system to a community that offers its members the opportunity to find everything (contacts, resources, documents, messages, media, etc.) in each of its venues that is relevant to what the venue refers to. You can find it here http://itsme.it/emulator/ You can finally start seeing the venues, and interact within them. A short demo can take you through the interactions and actions that can be performed through the emultaor. I hope i can count upon you all to try it out and let me know about your experiences. Would be great to know what the experts think. Oh, and the evaluation will be rolled out in 2 days, so please find some time before that. http://itsme.it/emulator/ Thanks in advance Nikhil Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Need for a new metaphor on Operating Systems?
Hi jose, True that, Its been 30 years since the desktop came into existence and it has become the standard user interface. While, the web has evolved in leaps and bounds, leaving enough room for innovation and grabbing most of our attention. While everyone else is focusing on web we are trying to innovate the OS domain. We started designing and developing a new Os called itsme in 2008. itsme is based on the metaphor of stories and venues. This basically means that everything users do is in the context of different stories they live with other people and sometimes alone. itsme is an opensource Os embodying the venue metaphor in its front end. Venue is the place where every item related to a story can be located within organized channels indicating relations across channels. All in all it helps its users to manage the complexity of their social environment. I can go on and on about it, so its better if instead i direct you to this link http://itsme.it/project/ I think there is a lot of room for discussion with regards to this metaphor and lately we were discussing the potential of vertical segments. any comments ? Perhaps there is a more elegant/simpler solution to this that is escaping me, but I thought a small app that displayed active discussions and allowed you to tag those you want to follow would be a time-saver. [IxDA Discuss] Come design itsme with us - New project website 2.0
Hi , I introduced itsme project to Ixda community in Feburary and received some interesting comments related to the project. For the new members, itsme is a new kind of personal computer based on stories and venues. We are in the middle of the development phase and you can see some on-going design activity on the new website. In the past, I also received feedback related to the project website - that people would like a more interactive way to discuss, evaluate, ask questions, and keep a track of itsme development process. In response to this, we have recently launched a new itsme website 2.0 that can be found at http://www.itsme.it. The site is still new, but we plan to invest a lot of time and energy to enrich it. You are most welcome to join the community and post discussion topics, comments etc. http://itsme.it/wp-login.php?action=register The aim is also to make the website a meeting point between interaction designers, developers, and potential users to discuss itsme and the realted scenario. So l would love to have you as a member of our community and hear more from you. comments feedback are welcome. thanks Nikhil Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Thanks to all those of you who visited the concept evaluation page. I have noticed , that a lot of people visited the concept evaluation page, saw the clips , but not many people evaluated. Not sure why. Plese let me know the reason, I am sure there is some problem because of which many people bounce out of the evaluation without completing it. here is the link http://evaluation.itsme.it/ feedback appreciated Thanks Nikhil . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Concept evaluation - itsme workstation
Thanks for the input abhay, You have a point there. The reason why we did it the way it is, is because we didnt want to force the test onto someone who doesnt want to take it. We intentionally gave options to the user. Maybe the test should open up automatically, with the option of closing it and moving on the next video. hmmm lets see what i can do about it. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Do you work from a home office?
Cubicles!! Luckily i never had to deal with them. In my previous workplace i was seated in the design studio, and we all know what they are like. :) while the rest of the teams had their cubicles. Yes i did feel sad for them. The workplace i am currently working at is a sort of loft, with all of us , developers, designers communication team together scattered around. some of us have their own desks, and some of us choose any corner we like. I guess it depends on the work that needs to be done. I am not forced to come to office, but i like coming to office. I am not trying to rub it in. The point that i want to make is, that if the employers want us to come to office they should think twice about the interiors. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [IxDA Discuss] Concept evaluation - itsme workstation
Hi everyone, A few days back i introduced a new project ITSME : a new workstation for the knowledge worker based on the concept of Stories and Venues (find details here http://www.itsme.it/about-us/). Up till now we have defined the ID Model, released explorations of Interaction Paradigms and Preliminary GUI, to achieve a detailed design of itsme visual interface. But now we need to understand how people perceive them, so we can assess the work we have done until now. We need to know how do you perceive itsme functionalities, what values do you attribute to itsme features, and further identify and understand user needs. Only then can we begin to make informed choices about whether and how to improve itsme to better suit the needs of the user. To that end, weâve put together an online concept evaluation: four persona based scenarios in the form of short video clips, each followed by a simple set of questions. http://www.itsme.it/evaluation/ Please, go ahead and evaluate the concept. It takes around 15 minutes to do the evaluation. Thanks for your time. Nikhil Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxD blog aggregator site - are you interested in contributing?
I recently joined IxDA, and i really like the discussions going on here. I personally like the way discussion has been structured on this website. Although my last post didnt get any comments, but i happen to think that the blogs would overshadow the discussion/one on one interactions taking place here. In anycase, if the community in the end decides to propose their blogs , i would like to have the blog of the project i am working on :-) Nikhil http://www.itsme.it/ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxD blog aggregator site - are you interested in contributing?
Hi Harry, Thanks for clarifying. In that case its a great idea. In my project blog http://www.itsme.it/ well as of now its kinda institutional, but we are trying to upgrade the website into a more interactive one, with a blog type forum to encourage developer communities and interaction design community to get together and discuss about interactive systems etc. Lets see how it goes. We plan to get online in the month of march. And i think it will be great to direct posts focusing on UX to the collaborative blog site you are talking about. Nikhil On Tue, Feb 17, 2009 at 4:07 PM, Harry harr...@gmail.com wrote: Nikhil, I agree, the quality of the discussions on the IxDA mailing list are outstanding. I thought it might be useful to newcomers to the field, people who aren't big RSS-heads, and so on. Harry Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! [IxDA Discuss] Come design ITSME with us
Hi everyone, I wanted to introduce Itsme project to you all and gather your comments and feedback on it, which I think is very important for the project as we are moving on from the initial design phase to the development phase. So, here goes a little about itsme.. Itsme is a new kind of PC that we are designing and developing. It is based on a new metaphor of Stories and venues : organizing information as per the context in which they are generated and needed. We have defined a clear vision of the Itsme interface, with design features etc, and are now moving on to the development phase. Here is a document where you can find more details about the concept, design features including , content management, navigational modalities, information flow management and how we are planning the itsme system architecture. http://www.itsme.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/itsme_cards_screen1.pdf Would appreciate your comments, thoughts, feedback Thanks Nikhil http://www.itsme.it/ Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Re: [IxDA Discuss] Open source user experience
Hi Tom, I completely agree with your thoughts on encouraging Design participation in open source projects. I am a part of an open source project where Interaction design is the basis of the project (www.itsme.it) and I know that the project could benifit a lot with designer participation. In the past, we extensively involved potential users, designers, developers to gain feedback on the design features and evaluate the concept. But now i am trying to understand how can I increase the partcipation of designers in the project to a greater level. We are launching a new interactive website in march, and thinking about opening up our design process inorder to discuss design features in greater depth. I found these opensource projects that encourage designer participation aswell. http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Desktop_Project http://everaldo.com/crystal/ Would be nice to see more comments/ideas on the subject. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
