Re: [SkullSpace-Discuss] Web App Developer Needed
Sounds like something I could be useful for although I have some thoughts: - Would probably need somewhere within 2-3ish people. - I wonder if $12k is a bit low for the schema and moving bits I'm seeing here. - One does not simply quit their day job. It's definitely well thought out and it's lots of information though. Would like to hear what others think (if interested)... I have piles of framework experience in PHP and have been picking up Rails of late as well. I've only glanced at the PDF, but I'll take a closer look tonight and see how my brainmachine reacts. Re: [SkullSpace-Discuss] Openbsd vs debian
Heya! Really I think what makes any OS a "Unix" these days isn't the initial brand you're seeing, but whether or not it's fully POSIX compliant, and does so without being confusing about it (OSX). I think Ubuntu is head and shoulders above the rest right now in terms of "Good Unixes". Not to say that I have any disliking of BSD for any reason, except that it's just not as easy to use, especially for newcomers. Whatever you might hear about Ubuntu being too simplified is probably just a reaction to the GUI it ships with. Underneath it all is just the same Linux with great standards and conventions in place to make finding everything and accomplishing tasks simple. There is something to be said about the software repositories both first and third party. Countless tools are being made available as .debs for Ubuntu now as well, which I think is huge. In terms of books and documentation, Ubuntu has http://www.askubuntu.com as well as their forums as well as a massive base of anecdotal knowledge available via a google search. I think that's just the start of it really. Let me know if you need a more specific question answered :) - Alex On Tue, Nov 5, 2013 at 1:12 AM, Ken DeWitt wrote: > I am asking this question to get a goos debate going and find out what > makes one better then the other. In a world devoid of conscious agents, it would be neither board nor class nigh not even a room! ;) I think I might be the only member in the group TBH but everyone (but Mak) is invited I'd say. RSVP on the meetup if you plan on coming too as that's the more central planning mechanic for the PHP group. [SkullSpace-Discuss] Do we ever do talks on Unity?
Lately I've been looking to diversify away from my usual server side PHP stuff during my recreational programming hours. So I started watching some tutorials on Unity during my xmas break and have been following along. It's nice finally coming to grips with the tool & it's APIs...But now I'm starting to wonder if I could learn more from others! Do we have any members or friends of members who are interested in or have been known to do talks on Unity? I feel like it'd be neat to hear some first hand accounts about peoples' workflows with the tool. Whether creating new elements, augmenting existing ones and all the techniques in between. Re: [SkullSpace-Discuss] Unity3d intro game dev talk.
Awesome, I will be there! I would be interested in seeing a bit of code for any kind of procedural generation and a small showcase of the API. These could be code bits that you have already prepared for the context if that's an easy format? User interfaces would be sweet too. And all the guts to get those communicating back into the game's underlying data model/graph/whatever the cool kids call it. ;) Working with the GUI tools, especially with positioning elements (cameras!!) within the scene and keeping everything from getting dog eared would be appreciated. I'm sure that's more experience and comfort than anything else. But it's also something where some tips from the trenches probably go a long way. Re: [SkullSpace-Discuss] Unity3d intro game dev talk.
I've heard rumblings that the "official" toolkit for console owners is going to be Unity with some perks for Kinect and SmartGlass. If that ends up being the case (and isn't gated too hard), it could give MS an edge. Not much of one, but just in terms of lowering barriers for development. It's partially why I got my ass in gear and started getting interested in Unity once and for all. On Thu, Jan 2, 2014 at 8:30 PM, Jim MacKenzie wrote: > Yes. [SkullSpace-Discuss] PHP Meetup suggested: Silex, Twig, Composer
Heads up that I've made a suggestion for a PHP user group meetup, it can be found here: http://www.meetup.com/Winnipeg-PHP/events/161813112/ This is one that was postponed last minute, but is ready to happen again! If you're looking to learn more about modern PHP, do check this one out. It'll be a great introduction to any presentations I might do in the future. - Alex ___ SkullSpace Discuss Mailing List Help: http://www.skullspace.ca/wiki/index.php/Mailing_List#Discuss Archive: https://groups.google.com/group/skullspace-discuss-archive/

I can help you with any framework issues you get stuck on. Add me on Google hangouts! Also an obligatory mention that PHP can do this really well too. Re: [SkullSpace-Discuss] scaling up classroom lab
This is a long shot, but have we considered actually approaching Microsoft for a donation of some licenses or even MSDN? [SkullSpace-Discuss] Yesterday's PHP User Group Meeting
Hey everyone, just wanted to say that the PHPUG went great yesterday evening. We managed to pack the classroom right up to the door! Everyone was focused and the space really "did it's thing". Being a neutral ground with a decently sized classroom space, I can see many more PHPUG meetings happening at SkSp. I saw some attendees leave with SkSp membership info and a few people seemed interested in learning more. No guarantees there, but there were some who had not heard of us - we'll see what shakes out of the tree over time! I've got a couple of suggestions/wishlist items for the classroom that I'll put up in a separate email. - Alex ___ SkullSpace Discuss Mailing List Help: http://www.skullspace.ca/wiki/index.php/Mailing_List#Discuss Archive: https://groups.google.com/group/skullspace-discuss-archive/
[SkullSpace-Discuss] Classroom Ideas
Had some ideas occur to me the last couple of times I've been in the classroom. Figured they'd be worth sharing... - Might be a good idea to pull the bulbs from the bank of lights in front of the projector screen. It has the undesirable sideffect of washing out the image, and if we need lights on throughout the rest of the room for follow-along, it creates a bit of a catch 22. - Given the pace of laptop tech, we should consider hard wiring an HDMI connector to the projector. Most multi converters for displayport to DVI don't necessarily include analogue pin-outs on the DVI connections (this means no DVI to D-Sub converters will work). I've resorted to using the spool of HDMI cable we have on-hand but that means it's dangling and I assume might not always be available. - Is it possible to pull the projector back a bit to increase the size of the area it projects and maybe even lower it slightly? I realize, this is all kind of wishlisty, but I think these three changes would go a long way for the classroom. There's also one question/puzzle I'd like to pose with regard to seating. We managed to attract quite a few people at the last PHPUG meeting and I'm wondering if anyone has ideas as to how we can better accomodate groups up to around 30 (!!!) people. Understanding that we have a limited budget, maybe note somewhere that if we could ever get longer tables (fewer table legs), we could fit more people in each row! Anyway, file this under "whenever", even without any of it happening the space has worked out great and the PHPUG is grateful for having access to the space. :) - Alex ___ SkullSpace Discuss Mailing List Help: http://www.skullspace.ca/wiki/index.php/Mailing_List#Discuss Archive: https://groups.google.com/group/skullspace-discuss-archive/
Re: [SkullSpace-Discuss] [SkullSpace-Announce] Tomorrow's meeting - AGM
Yes, I second the whole "platform" thing and feel that it should even be an entrance requirement. Not that I don't like getting to know people personally but I think a clearly stated goal of some kind is not an unreasonable thing to hope for.
