Thanks for the help so far. Here is what I know 1) The signal strength ranges from around 50-66%. I have never noticed a correlation between the dropouts and the signal. I fooled around a lot with Macstunbler and changing the frequencies, but no major affect. 2) I'll chack on the buffer stuff tonight. 3) I forgot to mention that the dropouts are usually worst when I'm just starting to play fromthe SB2. After a while it seems to lock on things much better. It also may be worse in the AM, but I can't see any affects of time of day on the signal strength. 4) The airport express is hooked up to the ISP via a cable modem. To diagnose this problem, it would be great to get debug output with the --d_info and --d_scan debug flags on when you do a rescan. To get this output, shut down SlimServer, launch a Terminal window, cd to the SlimServer directory (/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/Contents/server for most people, the same path with a ~ prepended to it for others), and type: ./slimserver.pl --d_info --d_scan Choose Rescan under the Server Settings of the web interface after doing this and send the terminal output (you can cut&paste or redirect to a file) to me at vidur | at | slimdevices.com. Also, many songs I attempt to play from the Squeezebox (as opposed to the Web interface) don't play but display STOPPED on the display. A couple of things have changed recently that could be behind it. First, I upgraded the Slim Server software recently to version 6.0.1 because the Squeezebox was having frequent trouble connecting to Slim Server (even though it found the network fine). Re: [slim] Re: Rhapsody on Slim
> Aaron, I'd like to know how you got Rhapsody to auto-launch and stay > logged in via execute scripts. Can you post the way you did that? To launch Rhapsody from the squeezebox you need KDF's execute-script plugin. Install that and set up a directory in your slimserver\server directory called "scripts". Stick a bat file in there that launches rhapsody. Mine looks something like this: @start "" "c:\Program Files\RealRhapsody\Rhapsody.exe" exit You can theoretically set up the plugin to run that script whenever certain buttons are pressed on your squeezebox remote (though I think KDF was having problems with this, last I heard), but I prefer to use it in it's "testing" mode where you simply navigate to the execute-script plugin in the plugin menu, then down to an event, then over, and choose your bat file and press play to launch rhapsody. To keep rhapsody running I use girder (an AMAZING program that seems to be able to do anything). The trial version of girder now requires registration after 30 days (and it's really worth it, if you ask me), though I do have an older version that's an unlimited, uncrippled (legal) shareware version from about a year and a half ago if you'd like me to send that to you. Girder has a timer plugin that I use to instantiate a girder macro once every 3 hours. The macro checks to see if rhapsody is running and if it is it maximizes the app and clicks the "album info" button under the album art. This proves to be sufficient interaction to keep rhapsody from timing out. I can also send you my girder file when I get home (I'm still at work), if you'd like. ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Squeezeboxes randomly rebooting
I've also experienced the reboot problem with exactly the same symptoms as those described in this thread. In general, the music suddenly stops, the squeezebox reboots and then the song starts from the beginning again. It's not always random as occasionally, the squeezebox reboots at exactly the same spot in the song. On these occasions, I suspect an encoding or decoding glitch is responsible, but although the same song will go down at the same time on two or more consecutive occasions, the same tracks will play just fine on many other occasions. That coupled with the usually random nature of the reboots suggests a server-side or data transmission error. The tracks that occasionally cause these reboots are all VBR encoded (alt-preset normal LAME). On the server side (5.4.1 running on Mac OS 10.2.8), I frequently get crashes, particularly when browsing long lists of albums/songs while the squeezebox is receiving a stream. Much less frequently when the box is idle. But all in all, the software is normally quite stable and I can listen for hours before encountering a reboot or server crash. I did try the 6.0beta a few weeks ago, but the server crashed immediately on streaming every time, so I went back to 5.4.1. The server (iMac 400MHz G3) is wirelessly bridged to my D-Link 713P router via ethernet. -- David Miller ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Using ExBrowse2 corrupts other skins
Server running on WinXP SP2 18 Apr 2005 nightly (6.0.1 - 2895) Using the standard SlimServer Web UI When I switch to ExBrowse2, I get the following Internet Explorer script error: Line: 10 Char: 1 Error: Object doesn't support this property or method Code: 0 URL:http://localhost:9000/setup.html?player=00%3A04%3A20 %3A05%3A11%3A38&playerid=&page=interface&skin=ExBrowse2 &itemsPerPage It asks, "Continue running scripts on this page?" and I click "Yes". If this is the first time switching to ExBrowse2 in the current SlimServer session, when I refresh the page, all that shows is "Loading..." in the upper left, although the status bar indicates that a bunch of stuff is being loaded. Strangely, if I open an IE window and navigate to localhost:9000/Fishbone, when the new window refreshes, the ExBrowse2 display (in the original window) fills in. Strange? Wait, there's more! When I switch back to Fishbone on the standard web UI, the playlist no longer contains links, just a text dump like this: Bill Frisell Good Dog, Happy Man file:Gateway400/Music/Bill%20 Frisell/Good%20Dog,%20Happy%20Man/01%20-%20Bill%20Frisell%20-%20Rain, %20Rain.mp3 Bill Frisell Good Dog, Happy Man file:Gateway400 /Music/Bill%20Frisell/Good%20Dog,%20Happy%20Man/02%20-%20Bill%20 Frisell%20-%20Roscoe.mp3 This happens with all the html skins I've tried. To get the proper display back, I either need to close the server, or refresh the IE window. More info: I don't get the script error when I switch to ExBrowse2 in the IE window, but I do get the blank screen. Also, the other skins usually aren't corrupted in IE after using ExBrowse2. Finally, browsing to localhost:9000/skinname always presents the skins properly. All this behavior is similar when using FireFox. -:- dbls -:- dbls___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Are you using the latest nightly? Which > browser are you using, and have you tried to see if other skins work? > > -kdf This happens with Firefox, Internet Explorer and the standard SlimServer web UI. I've installed the latest nightly, following the link for 6.0.2 (SlimServer_v2005-04-18.exe) which for some reason still shows up as 6.0.1 - 2895, the same version as the one I obtained via the link in Server Settings ("A new version of SlimServer is available") on the 14th. This still exhibits the same behavior. For example, if I let the pointer hover over the "M", the status bar shows http://localhost:9000/browse.html?&player=00%3A04%3A20%3A05%3A11 %3A38&&start=0#M but the list remains scrolled to the top when I click it. Other modes work, though I just noticed that the Browse Music Folder list is on a single page (i.e. all the letters are in boldface), which isn't true in other modes. By the way, the default skin behaves exactly the same as Fishbone. I switched to ExBrowse2 (which had its own curious behavior, but that's another thread), and the letter shortcuts do nothing in any mode unless the desired letter links to a different page of the list. One thing - when I switch to ExBrowse2, I get this Internet Explorer script error: Line: 10 Char: 1 Error: Object doesn't support this property or method Code: 0 URL:http://localhost:9000/setup.html?player=00%3A04%3A20 %3A05%3A11%3A38&playerid=&page=interface&skin=ExBrowse2 &itemsPerPage After that, the skin seems to work other than the scrolling shortcuts (except for some overlapping frames when the window isn't maximized). -:- dbls ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Feature Request: Log stream metadata on request...
Hey guys, I searched through the change log and didn't see anything like this, so If this already exists, I apologize. Any how, I had some people over the other night, and we were listening to a shoutcast radio stream. A song came on that I liked, so I went and wrote down the artist and name of the song. A buddy of mine (who also has a Slimp3) came over to see what I was doing. He mentioned that it would be cool if you could press a button on the remote, and have it log the current stream metadata to a log file somewhere. What a great idea! :) So, my feature request is, when playing an internet radio stream, can a button be added to dump whatever the current metadata for the playing stream to a file? An enhancement to this, might be to add a link in the web interface to view the log. Thanks! Re: [slim] Building a house server?
Hi Michael, I'll look into my exact setup when I get home, but I believe the spamassassin problem is due to a bug of some kind. On a heavy day, I don't get more than 20 messages to my home email. I use gmail for the lists I'm on. But basically something pops them from verizon, then procmail, then spamd. I then pop them again to one of 2 WinXP boxes where they get read. I've never really put a lot of effort into this once I got it working reasonably (but not necessarily efficiently). But sometimes, with no reason that I've yet found, the spamd process will be running, consuming all CPU. And it doesn't stop. The only way to clear it is to kill it, or reboot the system (which is usually what I do to make sure everything gets started up again correctly). People I correspond with get whitelisted after they end up in the SPAM folder once. Re: [slim] Re: Doesn't seem to be a valid directory
This is basic stuff, isn't it? Can anyone tell me if they actually have a 6.0.x installation on Windows, running as a service, and using a network share as the music folder? I ran into just this problem yesterday with 6.0.1. I set it up on my laptop and created a folder that contained a Windows shortcut to my music directory on a Windows share. The share is also mapped to a drive. I tried it both ways, with an UNC and with the drive letter, and I set the service to run as the user I was logged in as -- but I just could not get it to work right. Same symptoms as you say; when I click on Browse Music Folder I get one line, "Music.lnk" (my Windows shortcut), but then when I click on that I get nothing. Looking at the log it seems that the server couldn't traverse down into share. Yet when I ran the server via FireDaemon (again, running as the same user I normally log in as), it worked perfectly. I must be doing something wrong; the above doesn't really make any sense. Yet I did spend about 15 minutes yesterday fooling around with various possibilities, all to no avail. Perhaps I'll try some more experimentation this week. Certainly FireDaemon (although a wonderful free utility) shouldn't be required to run slim.exe as a service. When it crashes, Squeezebox2 goes black and every connection from my router is down (including the wired connection to my desktop). Unplugging and repowering the router restores all of the connections. Any advice is resolving this would be appreciated. -- warc1 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] SB2 - WOW!
Upon receivig my SqueezeboxG, I was overjoyed with the gadget but deep down inside I had issues with it that I didn't want to admit: - The sound through the analog outs was amazingly flat and not very strong. - I store my files in Apple Lossless and used to cross my fingers every time a track would change so I didn't get a drop/skip. - Even with a wired model, I could always count on skips due to buffer underrun 1-2 times for every 5 minutes of music or so. Luckily, I had my SBG for less than 30 days at the time the SB2 was announced and since I couldn't get the SBG to playback lossless audio without drops, the guys at Slim accepted my return. Now with the SB2: - the audio is awesome out of the analog outs. The music sounds vibrant and colorful and the output level is at or better than my other components. - The transcoding from Apple Lossless to FLAC is flawless and only uses 1-4 percent of my CPU. Tracks line up perfectly and there is no audible pop/clip/gap between tracks. - I now use the Wireless model (compared to the Wired SBG) and I haven't had a dropout yet. In fact, I've never seen the buffer drop below 100 percent yet. I'm so happy as I have ZERO reservations about this product as it works flawless. Hat's off to the guys at slim!!! - Chris ps - Now if Slim will only get some sort of support for Rhapsody (pretty please???) ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Just do a little searching on the mailing list for Linkstation and I know there's at least one site out there with a how-to for installing slimserver on the linkstation. ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Squeezeboxes randomly rebooting
I've had exactly the same problem for ages now - started (I think) around version 5.1.5. It was just about bearable, then my player suddenly died, so was sent a new one, only for that to have exactly the same problem (the restarting, not the dying), so I'd imagine it's a server/firmware problem rather than hardware. It's got worse over the past couple of weeks, for no reason I can work out. There are no conflicting networks nearby (I've tried different channels too), and signal strength's not great but not bad. It's not just losing contact with the network though, it's just crashing completely, sometimes as often as every minute or two. It's a Squeezebox 1 running on XP SP2. Network equipment's a Belkin Wireless 54Mbps adaptor and a BT Voyager 2100 router, although I had the same problem with a D-link card on an ad-hoc network in the past. It's a solid performer - occasional dropouts but not enough to bother me. the machine doesn't really do anything other than server music although i've got apache (which never really gets hit)and an FTP server on it as well. you can buy machines like this on ebay for around 200 bucks i think. ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Building a house server?
> What do people recommend for a basic house server? I'm using an old notebook computer as our house server, because it has a very low power consumption (approx. 10 watts when the disk is powered down and slightly more when the SlimServer software is streaming data). Our house server currently is a Toshiba Portege 7020 notebook (made in 1998) with a 366 MHz Pentium II CPU, a 60 GB internal disk and a 100Mbit/s cardbus ethernet card. The system is running Fedora Core 1 and SlimServer 5.4.0. The server sits in a wall-mounted kitchen cabinet in our house's utility room together with the DSL router/switch and WLAN AP. This works fine, as the notebook computer generates almost no heat. We have been using this configuration for several months now and are quite happy with it. ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I've been running a Via C3/800 (might be about as powerful as your PIII) for quite a while. No problem as SlimServer, fileserver, mailserver (3 users only), and dev webserver running Linux. I used to have a PC with a C3 700MHz CPU, 768MB RAM, Win2K. It would run SlimServer, FTP, Web and email OK, but I used to get drop-outs about once per hour. I thought this was due running the SB1 wirelessly, but I've since upgraded to a new PC (P4 CPU) and I've not had a drop-out since. The PC you mention would just about do the job under Windows, but it may be slow when you do stuff like 'Play all music', or shuffle large playlists. Also you may have problems running other apps at the same time. -- benc ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: No Windows Nightlies 20050417 ARRRRRRRRGGGG!!!!
A quick click around the Community links at the top of the forums pages shows that the svn url that you're after is probably http://svn.slimdevices.com/trunk/server/. Try "svn co http://svn.slimdevices.com/trunk/server/ ". You can then cd into and do "svn update". "svn status -r" would, I think, tell you if you need to update, but I could be wrong about the -r bit - you need an argument to tell it to check the remote repository rather than just to look at your local copy. "svn help update" will tell you what you want. -- max.spicer The wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws but Max stepped into his private boat and waved good-bye ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Don't know about FC3, but Subversion is at http://subversion.tigris.org/. Once it's installed, you need to do "svn co ". From then on, you just cd to the directory where you put it and type "svn up[date]" - it will know where to go. Sorry for the skeletal response - I've never used the Slim repository - but it might at least give you some pointers.

[slim] SqueezeboxG display corruption
I noticed some weird display corruption on my SqueezeboxG over the weekend: >From time to time the display would 'roll' up and down, like a TV that had lost vertical sync. Does anyone know what causes this? I've recently moved all my hi-fi/squeezebox/router components and ramped up the scrolling refresh rate. Also, what does the little black box wrapped around the power lead do? I moved it a bit further away from the squeezebox so it was hidden down the back of my hifi cabinet. James PS.
