I (unthinking) upgraded to iTunes 5, and it seems I'm in the same boat. Even manually specifying the location of the iTunes library XML file and the iTunes Music folder, I get 0 albums, 0 artists, 0 tracks, and of course no playlists. I tried the 9/19 nightly of 6.1.2, which had problems running the build-perl-modules.pl. I tried the 9/19 nightly of 6.2, which also didn't grok the iTunes library, and which liked to make lots of duplicate entries (some single-artist, single-disc albums had 2-4 duplicates in the albums listing). So, now I'm back to the official release of 6.1.1 for Linux, and no playlists, but at least I don't have the junky listings of 6.2. Julian, There's some related discussion in bug 616, though maybe it should be forked off as a separate bug: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=616 I'm not sure I fully understand your problem however. I think what you're saying is that when browsing artists, it is confusing because the displayed strings look out of order at first glance: Beatles James Brown Buffalo Tom until you identify which are people's names and identify the last name. But then you state: > I think I underestimated the extent to which I used the physical cue > from the CD spines when I browsed my CDs in my CD racks. I don't know about your CDs, but on mine the artist names are written just as above, and I sort them on my shelf just as the SB does. How about giving these tracks an 'Album Name' such as 'Singles - Artist Name'. Then when you browse by artist you would get a list of the artists actual albums plus the 'singles' album. I would suggest, as I have shown above, that you add the artist name to the 'singles' album as this should ensure SlimServer lists them correctly. For example: Singles - ABC Singles - DEF I have very few singles but use a dummy artist name of 'Misc' so they get shown with the artists full albums. Roku Internet radio rocks on easily By Dawn C. Chmielewski Mercury News Roku wants to replace your bedside clock radio with a gadget that tunes in Internet radio stations and plays your digital music collection. The SoundBridge Radio, which Roku announces today, is one of those rare home-networked devices that was easy to set up and use -- just like a radio. And it produced surprisingly rich sound quality that put it on a par with Bose or Cambridge SoundWorks. The SoundBridge Radio works like its traditional namesake -- it tunes in AM and FM stations and plays music through its built-in, high-fidelity speakers. But it also connects to your home's high-speed wireless network to fetch and play music off your computer's hard drive or receive Internet radio stations. Those include local stations that stream their broadcasts online or channels that are found only on the Internet. But Roku will have a tough time competing with the audiophile's favorite, Bose's Wave Music System, when it comes to looks. Roku's original networked home music player, the SoundBridge, has a distinctive tubular design with a long LCD display that gave it a sleek, futuristic feel. The SoundBridge Radio, on the other hand, bears an unfortunate resemblance to those gigantic home intercoms of the '60s. Some people will hasten to note that what's important is not how a radio looks, but how it sounds. Still, if Roku wants a spot on my granite kitchen counter, it better look hot, too. That's doubly true if I'm prepared to lay out $399 for a clock radio, instead of the usual $10. But enough about looks. Roku recognized an opportunity in the growing popularity of Internet radio, which now attracts about 40 million listeners. The original SoundBridge let people listen to Internet radio or their digital music collections through their home stereo. Of course, not everybody wants to invest the effort in modifying their existing stereo equipment to liberate the music from their home computers. The SoundBridge Radio targets this less-hassle-is-more market. It took less than five minutes to add the radio to my encrypted wireless home network. The LCD screen prompted me to provide the most basic information -- language, time zone, country of residence and network password, which I did using the remote control. After briefly restarting, the SoundBridge Radio was ready to rock. A source button lets you select audio options: AM or FM radio, Internet radio or your digital music collection stored on a computer's hard drive or a memory card. I was impressed with how the SoundBridge Radio automatically found the music tucked away inside my Mac's iTunes folder. The only limitation -- and it's a significant one -- is one Apple Computer has imposed. The SoundBridge Radio cannot play music purchased from Apple's iTunes Music Store, because Apple refuses to license its software to other hardware makers. (Apple, c'mon, set my music free.) The SoundBridge Radio works with other digital music services, playing music purchased or played in a continuous stream from Napster or MSN Music. It also will play music streams from RealNetworks' Rhapsody. But given that Apple controls 82 percent of the paid online music market, this will give iTunes music buyers pause. Roku added some other nice touches that are worthy of mentioning. It ships with 50 pre-programmed Internet radio stations, including my personal favorite, the eclectic Radio Paradise. A scan button lets you find new stations, just as you would tune any other radio. The radio also has six preset buttons along the top, which can be configured to remember 18 channels. Naturally, you can store your favorite radio stations. But what I liked was the ability to also store playlists or even albums fetched from my computer's hard drive. For example, I stored Coldplay's ``X&Y'' by simply playing the album and touching a preset. The system conveniently and automatically assigns names to each channel, so you don't need total recall. One more thing: It's a clock radio with alarm, with a big snooze button. But don't toss this across the room when you're half asleep. You'll regret it. the help desk Contact Dawn C. Neal Gabbons wrote a comprehensive review of Squeezebox 1 (version 2) and Slimserver in the May edition of HiFi World. He was enthusiastic about the sound and even suggested numerous tweaks to the squeezebox that included replacing the power supply and some internal components with upgraded electronics! The comparison was with an esoteric Naim CD5 and Flatcap 2 power supply costing many times the price! All in all, the review was very positive with Mr Gabbons extolling the virtues of the Exact Audio Copy codec (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de) he used and declaring that after tweaking, his Squeezebox sounded almost as good as his Naim! There was no comparison with any competing WiFi device in the review and being a committed audiophile, he made no attempt to compare any other lossy codecs alongside lossless EAC. Bruce Hartley Wrote: > Slim Devices must be way ahead of the curve > > Their units have always looked like clock radios ;-) Sorry to say; that sort of attitude might lead to a loss of market (if not already...). Roku does have some advantages that appeal to "common" people, if I may (like big displays, MS media server support, TV integration). This new device hits a quite certain niche in the market, and will help them get audience. I will give you an example. I myself just recently jumped on the home digital music wagon, buying my first SB2. Immediately I had a problem, since I wanted to put it into a bathroom, and I had to think about an amp, enclosure, speakers, etc. For me, a bathroom device does not mean top notch quality, so if their would be a readily available "bathroom-frienly" slim unit with an integrated amp - that would be a great relief. My next unit is going to be a living room one - and there I really would need a big display - or a TV connection. And a clock radio version with integrated speakers fits my bedroom just right - no need to buy a mini system just to connect an SB2. Somehow Roku is on an easier path - they do not have to care about the server software, so they can concentrate on different hardware units for different niche markets. For Slim Devices its a hard task to follow them, since they have also to take care of the server application. That would also get round a nasty issue I have with the Telcanto client. It sees the artist list as just the "Artist" values (although curiously they are delivered to the Telcanto client in the correct sort order, i.e. with Artistsort used as the sort string when set). The trouble is that when I tap a tab at the top of the screen, e.g. the "cde" tab to take me to the start of the artists beginning with "c", Telcanto searches down the list but is searching the list of Artist tags with no access to the Artistsort tags so it sees "David Bowie" for instance, thinks it has hit the "d"s, and positions the display there. With your suggestion then SlimServer will automatically deliver the Artistsort text where appropriate to Telcanto and the tabs would work properly without needing to add extra logic into Telcanto and extra client-server protocols to allow Telcanto to get access to the Artistsort tag values (which apparently is where Telcanto and Slim Devices are currently at in their discussions). Note that clicking End Process on processes that may effect the basic operation of the computer will result in "This is a critical system process. Task Manager cannot end this process." Be sure to restart the computer afterward, as this experiment will probably shut down any antivirus software that is running. -- abdomen ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Part of the issue may be that the SB1 firmware could not be open sourced, so even if the community had the resources to add additional features, it would be difficult or impossible. Seeing that product announcement made me think about how I might use the Squeezebox2's alarm functionality once I buy one for the bedroom. It struck me that it would be helpful to have the ability in the Slimserver UI to configure an alarm to be preceded by one or more IR blaster commands. The use I have in mind for this is to turn on the amplifier at wakeup time rather than leaving it on all night. There were a great number of upgrades during the life of the SB1. FW version 40 after all. SB1 just coudn't hack a proper native FLAC implementation, or any other codecs. If Slim Devices' plan for growth relies on things like SqueezeNetwork and its ability to allow you to run without yoru own server then they HAD to rework the hardware to fully support the needs of this technology. I know I've been thinking about getting another one, but don't need the extra stuff of the sb2 (yet). I'm not sure why you feel 3 is a heavy investment - I know there are people on this list who've purchased at least 10 and probably are thinking about selling. Just upgrade incrementally, rather than all at once. You can probably get $150 for a good used sb1. That means it would only cost (at most) $150 for an sb2 - a pretty good deal IMHO. [slim] SB1: Feeling Forgotten
I own 3 Squeezeboxen V1. These toys have revolutionized access to my music and it's wonderful thing. Many thanks to Sean, Dean, and all the other Slim Devices employees and open source developers who have made this happen and continue to make new things happen. Having said that, I'd like to express a concern of late (please no flames). With 3 units, I feel I have invested heavily in the product line. My experiences to date have been GREAT but there are some little things that I've been patiently waiting/hoping to have fixed/added/improved. And recently it seemed like the time for 2 biggies was at hand... Built-in FLAC/WMA decoding, COOL... oh wait, gotta have a SB2... ReplayGain, YES... oh wait, gotta have a SB2. Is it blasphemy to admit that lately I've felt a little forgotten? As promised SilmServer continues to support my SB1's so I'm not abandoned and I SINCERELY appreciate that, but I do feel a bit like a forgotten step-child. I understand the reason for this... we are always focused on the new thing and the hard-core developers very likely purchased (or perhaps were given) nice shiny new SB2s to encourage forward development. But for us owners on a budget who can't continually repurchase, this doesn't leave a good taste. I watched the SliMP3 for some time and then invested in SB1 because I thought it would be an upgradeable platform. I guess my timing was bad, and perhaps in some ways the SB1 was upgradeable but all the development effort (and that's what really counts) has shifted to SB2. Some long awaited features require a SB2, I feel somewhat hostage to this development approach. Either pony up and replace your hardware or live with what you have as-is. From time-to-time (measured in years) this might make sense as revolutionary enhancements often require a completely new foundation. But as a S.O.P. it makes me question my original investment, and honestly it makes me hesitant to invest further as a new model may be released at any time and my investment is rendered stagnant. I understand that technology today is obsolete tomorrow. I also understand that for Slim Devices' business model to work it must continually advance and find new sources of revenue. Development must focus on the current generation of hardware. I suppose what I am suggesting to Sean and company is to take the time to design the next model for upgradeability. Knowing that my investment won't be spoiled will go a long way to convincing me to jump back in and purchase new units. With this post I would like to stimulate some constructive conversation, or perhaps just express my concern and feel better about the situation by doing so. In no way is this post intended to take away from all the truly great things Slim Devices and the development community have accomplished. If I never upgrade again I will likely be happy for years. I just wish I could take advantage of the things I've been waiting for but now seem unattainable. -- bishopdonmiguel ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] roku annouces 'clock radio' unit
more aimed at the bose product and that customer... http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/12685951.htm Posted on Mon, Sep. 19, 2005 Get up! Hi, Ok lets put things in to perspective sales wise when comparing SB2 to Roku. We all know that the SB2 is functionally better and sounds much much better than the Roku but the Roku is cheaper are arguably better looking for retail. I have just spoken to one our more major retailers who sells both the SB2 and the Roku M1000 and so far this month they have had their best month ever on the Roku at a massive 20x units, previous months have see huge sales figures of 17x units and 12x units respectively. In comparison the SB2 has sold nearly 5x the amount Roku has sold this month and is looking like it will be 7x or 8x as much this month. What does this tell you? Well: 1. The SB2 is a better product and customer know it. 2. It doesn't matter that the SB2 is more expensive and not quite as nice looking. 3. We are selling more SB2 in the UK than Roku are selling M1000 regardless of all of their great reviews and PR that they get. Oh and by the way, I think that new Roku Radio looks minging - discuss.. interesting idea. I never even knew about artistsort, probably because my collection was initially designed for use on Phatbox, and because it is about 50/50 flac and mp3. so, I have tagged all my artists (where appropriate) Last Name, First Name. Perfect for sort order, not so great for display (either when browsing or especially when playing). On the Phatbox (which has the cool feature of using AT&T Natural Voices to enable voice announcement of tracks), I wrote some perl code to flip around the artists with last-name-first before generating the voice via text-to-speech. Seems it would be straightforward to do something similar here -- set up a regexp table to map "LN, FN" artists to "FN LN". I'm not sure (1) *where* that belongs (plugin or basic feature, player or server); (2) how best to control it; or (3) whether it's possible to configure things so it applies only to the display-when-playing mode and not the search/browse modes. My first suggestion I think would be to create this as an alternate screensaver for the device. So when it goes into "Now Playing" mode, it comes up using the plugin that tweaks the artist name if necessary. -- mkosma ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] How to use FLAC?
Munge, Currently there is a bug with the SB2 using the Apple lossless. It cuts off the beginning of each songs slightly. Sometimes you will notice that by listening to the beginning of the songs but that's rare. The most problematic thing with that is when you are listening to a continuous live recording CDs or any continuous recordings, you will notice the gap between songs. It gives you slight clicking sound between the songs. I have a lot of Apple lossless files myself and I'm hoping that the issue will be solved soon. Would it manage to decode Apple lossless and then encode to FLAC on the fly? Any advice would be appreciated. [slim] Artist/Artistsort tags not what is really needed
Please excuse the slightly provocative title for this thread. This is definitely not me having a pop at the implementers, I am just hoping to stimulate discussion or even better find that there is a feature already in the software to do what I want. Now that I have my real SB2 up and running and have some experience of real life use I am discovering something that isn't working as well as I'd hoped. The way I tagged my collection was to put the "traditional" artist's name in the Artist tag and then use Artistsort (I use FLAC) to get the right sort order, so for instance I have an album with Artist tag "Iggy and the Stooges" and Artistsort tag "Pop, Iggy". What I am finding with the above is that when I am browsing artists I am seeing the Artist tag and my brain needs to (and fails to!) jump around the artist name to get the correct order, i.e. as I browse through the list it doesn't feel to me like it is in alphabetic order because if a first name is in there (for instance) then it trips me up. I think I underestimated the extent to which I used the physical cue from the CD spines when I browsed my CDs in my CD racks. The end result of this is that I find browsing my artists on the SB2 (or the Telcanto client) is just nowhere near as easy as it was scanning my CD rack. One solution to the above would be to make all the Artist tags have "normalised" values, i.e. implement the consistent naming scheme I currently use for Artistsort (and hence be able to dispense with using the Artistsort tag). This would mean that my Artist tags would look consstent and genuinely alphabetic to my brain when I browse them. The problem with this is that when I am playing an album then I want the display name to say "Iggy and the Stooges" (for instance) and not "Pop, Iggy". So, finally what I have come to is that for me what I really want in the tags is not the ability to use Artistsort to override the Artist tag sort order but rather the ability to have a tag like ArtistDisplayName to override the Artist display name when a track is playing (but _not_ when browsing). Does this mechanism already exist in some way? If not then would it be implementable and does anyone else agree with me that it would be a good feature to have? Does anyone have any other suggestion as to how to achieve what I want? - Julian -- JulianL ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Seems the best way to handle the new design might be with a new design ;) I would think the front panel would comprise the set of buttons, volume control, and backlight, with another ribbon cable to the (new) printed circuit board (PCB). Add a little programmable logic device to the PCB (assuming the existing Xilinx device is full or pin-limited or just not desirable to change, otherwise this function can go there). The function could debounce the switch contacts, and interrupt the CPU on a button press. Multiple outstanding button presses could be saved, but I would think the CPU could service the requests fast enough. Info could be retrieved over a simple interface like I2C or SPI. It doesn't take much to do this. I would not be surprised to see a little part already available from Maxim/Dallas or Analog Devices which does button sampling already in an I2C-accessible device. -- Dave D ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Feature Request: Transferring active playlist
Not sure if this is already possible, but I was unable to find a method of transferring a currently playing playlist from my Slimp3 in the kitchen, to my SB1 in the lounge, without forcing them both to be synchronised. I.e. I was listening to a selected (and shuffled) playlist on one player, but then wanted to carry on listening from the current song on the other player, and selecting a different playlist on the first player. If I had just selected the same playlist, I would of course have ended up hearing loads of songs again from the new shuffle or the original playlist order, given it was shuffled before first use. Perhaps the ideal solution is that in the saved playlist menu, I should be able to select the name of the other player (without shuffle) and then I could manually select the current song entry number. Or is there a better (existing) way? Thanks, Pascal. ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Uses composer when browsing artists
Sorry 6.1.1 not 5.1.1 No I have checked the tags with a couple of tag readers and there is no composer information in the artist category. Interestingly the composer information the squeezebox comes up with for songs isn't even the composer information in the tag for that song. I have cleared and rescanned the music library a couple of times, but this doesn't help. [slim] Re: SlimDevices losing out in the UK
I don't read magazines much but I check online sources a lot. I used to check cnet and zdnet for reviews on the latest computer stuff. They've been fairly up-to-date on all sorts of gadgets, peripherals and things. But they have no review of the Squeezebox2. There's only the Squeezebox reviewed in April 2004. When compared to "most popular Digital Media Receivers": http://reviews.cnet.com/4540-6739_7-30600812-4.html?tag=tab On the otherhand, when the Soundbridge is compared to others the Squeezebox doesn't even show up: http://reviews.cnet.com/4540-6739_7-30794476-4.html?tag=tab Incidentally, if you search for "Roku" or "Soundbridge" on cnet or zdnet the Squeezebox shows up as a "sponsored match". At PC World, I can't find the Squeezebox (but the competitors are there): http://www.pcworld.com/ At PC Mag, the Squeezebox is there somewhere but it's not one of their top rated products: http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,1874,924250,00.asp In my opinion, these are the places Average Joe will go to get help in making purchasing decisions. So this is all just for awareness in case someone wants to try and improve the situation.
