[slim] Blank Screen on Sqeezebox2
Hello all! I've just received my Squeezebox2, but it has stopped working after a few hours use. When I power it up, I just get a blank screen. No Slim Devices, nothing at all. There is power getting to the device as the tiny bars in the VFD light up red (very faintly). I checked to see if my CPU was loose, but it all looks okay inside. Mine is glued down. Does anyone have any ideas, or should I just RMA it? Thanks, Chalky -- chalky ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Lacking feature
Hello there, I've come a long way searching for my perfect digital audio playback device. Now I found SB2, which is perfect - almost. The main reason I'm looking for a dedicated audio jukebox is that I don't want to have a (loud, power consuming and keyboard mice requireing) computer running just to listen to my music. I love all that extra features of SB2, vorbis, musepack und replaygain support for instance, but being based on a client-server architecture it simply doesn't do the trick for me. I would love to see an upcoming SB3 featuring the possibility of connecting a IDE/SATA or USB HD drive to it, so it can be truly standalone. I would only use the network connections to move files around. But that would require a major change in architecture, so I'll probably have to dream on or build my own box :-/ -- Raptus ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Well, many thanks for this discussion, this has been interesting. I'm now trying out last.fm and have added the scrobbler plugins for slimserver and foobar2000. [slim] Re: Lacking feature
Yes, that would be the think big solution, maybe some EPIA based system. Embedded hardware and dedicated OS/software still seem a more appropriate approach though, especially if there already are systems like SB2 with a mature LCD/remote controled interface. Actually it doesn't need a decent processor, there are devices doing similar decoding tasks using a 180Mhz ARM CPU and less. SB2's RISC CPU should be up to it. -- Raptus ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

So, it needs a decent processor, a network, a big disc... Sounds like a silent PC, possibly headless, in a rackable box... not too hard to do, if you're so inclined. Then you'd be able to connect it not only to the SB2 next to it in the rack but also all of the other SB2s that you'll want around the house! Actually it doesn't need a decent processor, there are devices doing similar decoding tasks using a 180Mhz ARM CPU and less. SB2's RISC CPU should be up to it. Decoding isn't the problem. But the management of a few thousand songs (there are people using it with 100'000 songs!) and serving web pages does need a little more performance. Go through the forums: there are user running slimserver on devices like the linksys NSLU which use something like 200MHz CPUs. But they are reportedly rather slow on scanning and browsing. -- Michael --- Help translate SlimServer by using the StringEditor Plugin (http://www.herger.net/slim/) ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Go into the Sounds and Audio Devices control in your Control Panel (I think pre-XP it's Sounds and Multimedia). There's a tab where you can pick the sounds that play for all sorts of different Windows events like startup, shutdown, error, etc. Look for the sound labeled Start Navigation (on XP this is under the Windows Explorer heading), and change that sound to None. -Steve ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

OMG This is amazing, apart from an over tendency to play Garbage and Suede I have been very royally entertained for the past 3-4 hours with a mixture of old favourites and new gems. All from playing radio with songs like Catatonia. Thanks for this thread for showing me what can be done and thanks to James Craig for writting the LastFM plugin. Couple of questions spring to mind - How do they manage to stream such good music at such a good quality and how do they make money for a free service? Has anybody paid for an upgraded account? they seem to only want 1.5GBP for this which doesn't seem right. [slim] SlimServer conflict with Google Earth?
Hi, Just wondering if anyone else has seen this. I bought my Squeezebox2 last week, installed SlimServer on my WinXP PC, and everything worked very nicely. SlimServer icon appeared in my windows system tray ... and when double clicked opened up http://localhost:9000/; in my browser, which gave me the SlimDevices/Squeezebox UI ... everything works. Music plays on the squeeze box ... and I am happy. Today I installed Google Earth on the same PC as SlimServer. Google Earth worked fine. Then I went to use Squeezebox ... and it could not connect. I double clicked SlimServer in my system tray, and it opens http://localhost:9000/;, but now it is a NuSphere page instead of SlimServer. Backing a hunch, I uninstalled Google Earth, and sure enough, everything works again. http://localhost:9000/ opens SlimServer and not NuSphere. Given the popularity of both products, I would be surprised if I am the first to run into this ... but a search of these forums did not find anything for NuSphere or Google Earth. I am guessing that both products have decided to default to the same 9000 port. Is there a way to configure one or the other to use a different port? Or am I doing something else wrong? Any information would be appreciated. -- silverswingman ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] AM radio interference when Squeezebox is on
When my wireless Squeezebox (original) is powered on and I am listening to AM radio anywhere else in the house, I get interference in the AM signal. This is something that has happened ever since I received the Squeezebox. The interference can be described as background noise and a blip about twice a second or so.
