Yeah, I have several great looking gadgets gathering dust in my closet. They all look attractive, but have proven to be useless / boring / no longer supported / incompatible / whatever...
Squeeze Box is NOT one of them. You got the internals right first, and then, finally, got a nice case as well.
Excellent job!

[slim] Albums with files in different directorys

2005-10-25 Thread mirage62

I'm running XP SP2, Squeezebox 1 and the official 6.2 release.

After rescanning I have too many albums, and the problem is that albums
with files in more than one directory are split in two (or more) entrys
in the album-list.

This happens no matter if I scan directore or if I use iTunes.

In some earlier 6.2 beta I could get it to work by checking Common

official release.

Thats is probably true, but what about in 6 month or 1 year ?

I think the whole idea of having a smart and slim MP3 player that can

It is a shame, and i REALLY hope they will continue to produce the

Both the web interface and the Squeezebox interface are very responsive

Re: [slim] 6.2 Mac problem? and question

2005-10-25 Thread Michael Herger

I upgraded from 6.1.1 to 6.2 on a Mac running iTunes 6.0.1. Perl
(presumably Slimserver) has been taking near 100% cpu for going on 1.5
hours. My iTunes lib isn't *that* big, perhaps 45GB or so. Is this
normal?

When updating it will rescan all your collection. This can take a moment
or two :-). If you interrupt it (as you did with the reboot :-/) the scan
will be incomplete and you will miss some of you music when browsing the
collection. Just be patient and let it finish. Start a rescan (Server
settings) before going to sleep.

None of the slimboxes are responding and nor is the web connection.
The server software is stuck on starting slimserver. Sadly there is

Before the update form .1 all was working fine. I use iTUNES to sort

Any ideas?

[slim] SlimServer starting...

2005-10-25 Thread Ronny

Hi all,
I just upgraded to 6.2. Now Slimserver is starting since two
hours. I can't access the Web IF nor is my Slimp3 activated yet.
(I'm running XP SP2 and my library is about 125 GB)

- Why is SlimServer rescanning the library after each update?
I understand it's necessary if anything in the DB was changed,
but it would be nice to provide more information on what's going
on. (Number of discs scanned...) If no rescan is needed, it should not
be done. I'm sure more people would try out and
provide feedback on the nightly builds if this annoyance was
eliminated.

Can you check there is a 'SlimServer' service installed?
(Services tool under Administrative Tools)

What are it's settings?
Does the status change to 'starting' when you try to start SlimServer
(I'm guessing with the SlimTray tool?)

I would also try opening a command tool and running c:\program
files\SlimServer\Server\Slim.exe --d_info to see if anything
interesting happens. The --d_info flag (if I remember correctly) will
provide some feedback on any rescanning that may be happening.

I really like the new design. One thing occurs to me for an SB4 though.

This new form factor could now very conveniently house an even bigger
display, say twice the height of the current display. Instead of the
single line display for the info on the track currently playing I often
wish that the display had space for a 3 line display (I would configure
such a display with the top line for the Artist, the second line for
the Album title and the third line for the track title).

[slim] SlimAmp Please!

2005-10-25 Thread enricosalad

Cool new Squeezebox - now it has form aswell as function!

One request though, it is really crying out for a companion amplifier
(prefereably class-T, based upon the chip from http://www.tripath.com/
). The vision is that either there is a version of Squeezebox with the
amp built-in, or the Squeezebox sits or docks onto the amplifier.

The amp need only be a straight power-amp (to keep costs down) with no
gain control, as you can do that from the Squeezebox (probably need a
firmware/software update to ensure that it can never turn-on at full
volume...).

Thanks for a great product,

E.Salad (a loyal Squeezebox customer)

p.s. the T-Amp, based on the tripath chip, has been getting rave
reviews all over the interweb.

p.p.s. once I get my new Squeezebox (as soon as they are available in
the UK) I may try to self-integrate my old one with a built in Amp and
let you know the results.

 side.

Ah yes, good point.. Check out the new 0.08 that I've just uploaded..
It's now got a grip-bar type control which lets you size the songs list.

Great work though it really is responsive and makes changing music with
the slimserver a piece of cake.

Thanks.. Glad it's useful..

When updating it will rescan all your collection. This can take a
 moment
or two :-). If you interrupt it (as you did with the reboot :-/) the
 scan
will be incomplete and you will miss some of you music when browsing
 the
collection. Just be patient and let it finish. Start a rescan (Server

 settings) before going to sleep.

It ran completely out of control for 2 hours. Unless the rescan was
slowed down intentionally in 6.2 (haha) I don't think it was
 rescanning.

No offense meant to anyone at slimdevices, but as much as I love the
SB, I feel this type of design is the WRONG direction to be moving in.
I'm of the opinion that this device should blend in with your
stereo...not stand out from it.

What is so difficult about offering 2 (or more) different case styles
that have the exact same hardware inside? (One stereo component type,
and the new design)

I'm afraid if this is the permanent new look of the SB, then the SB2
may have been my last SB purchase.

(sorry if I'm putting a damper on these festivities)

Just uploaded 0.08 which should hopefully trap/fix the problem.

I've also added some extra diagnostics to the log-file code. If you
find it's still not displaying any time information, it would be
interesting to see a log.

Thanks,

2005-10-25 Thread cmturner2

I am in some agreement with the previous poster.

I have an old clock radio from Eckard that looks to be a twin brother
of the new SB3, so regardless of everything else, IMO you paid too
much for some fancy designer to turn a great looking product into a
mediocre looking one.

Ideally you'd backport the minor hardware improvements to the superior
SB2 and continue offering them side by side, but hey, I already have
mine so not a problem. :)

A higher priority in my book would have been threading in the
SlimServer software so the music doesn't stop playing when doing things
like mucking about with large playlists or scanning libraries.

Oh well, good luck with your new product!

Simply put, Slim Devices' Squeezebox2 is the best product in its class.
You're not buying a computer peripheral, but rather a superbly engineered
audiophile component.

Well, if you went to your music folder or album and chose only one song

Now, if you tried playing the whole album and only one song played,

[slim] reboxing the SB2

2005-10-25 Thread gingerneil

I am interested in re-housing my SB2 into an old DVD player casing
(Toshiba if that matters!).
Where do I start ?! Do people totally re-house the hardware, ie
removing the PCBs and re-mounting; or just whack the full 'old' box
into the new one and secure it in place, extending the outputs to the
appropriate places in the rear of the old box ?

Is it possible to buy empty hi-fi boxes incase the wife dis-approves of
me killing the DVD player ?
