Re: [slim] SB2 Bridging question
However, the new network topology would be using the SB2 wireless interface to connect to the fiber router and the wired interface to connect to the computer running SlimServer. The computer running SlimServer would then be using the SB2 to bridge over to the fiber router for access to the rest of the network. That's the exact configuration (except it's still DSL for me) I've been using for about two months now. -- Michael --- Help translate SlimServer by using the StringEditor Plugin (http://www.herger.net/slim/) ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You didn't specify the slimserver version you're using. 6.5 is cutting edge, and problems are to be expected as there are major works on the skins going on. When I connect the player to the server, the web page (on the top right hand corner) shows the different IP addresses (with the player) connected to the server in a dropdown menu. I use this dropdown menu to switch to the playlist of different players. This is correct. Did you disable javascript by chance? Or do you use some security package (popup blocker, privacy protector or whatever it might be called) which does not like the javascript's window reload mechanisms? - changing the IP addr in the right pane didn't affect the left pane - the links still looked like: It should reload the two panels. Which slimserver release are you using? 6.2? 6.1? 6.5? There is no change button in the default skin, right? Yes, it uses javascript to do the reload. - it worked from a remote location (router fowarded 9000 to machine running slimserver), but not from a local machine. Hi Folks, Started looking into getting all my music tagged for replaygain. I have all my music stored as flac. A trawl of the forums revealed that I can get set up by using foobar2000 to tag all my music which I've started. I have some questions as to how this actually works. Does it consider the volume levels of every track in the music collection before applying gain values? If so, does this mean every time I rip a new CD I'm going to have to rerun it across the whole collection again? Hope not becaus it seems to be taking ages! [slim] WMA DRM PRW (periodically recurring whine)
I know this issue has come up a number of times, but it usually doesn't receive too many comments from Slim Devices. Also, there has been progress recently on WMA support in the firmware, so I thought it might be worth raising the issue again. The new Squeezebox looks very nice, but personally, I'm not yet tempted to upgrade from the two first generation players I already own. Why? I want the DRM support to play music from one of the subscription services that are out there. Without that, I'm stuck waiting for someone to release a device that's comparable to the Squeezebox in overall experience and also supports WMA DRM (and if it supports streaming from Rhapsody, so much the better). I've talked to several people shopping for media streaming boxes recently, and in all cases, working with Rhapsody or Yahoo Music has been a requirement, not a nice to have. I end up telling them, The Squeezebox is the best thing out there in most ways, but right now you'd be better off buying... I wish I didn't have to do that. Anyway, DRM is mentioned in the software roadmap on the Wiki as a goal, but it doesn't appear in the more concrete plans. Could someone from Slim Devices comment on (or at least hint vaguely at) the issues involved, and/or any concrete plans? Thanks. -- gsamsa ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If so, does this mean every time I rip a new CD I'm going to have to rerun it across the whole collection again? Hope not becaus it seems to be taking ages! Since you're using Foobar2000, the process is very straightforward. Just load up all the albums you want to process. If they are in a single directory hierarchy, that's trivial: right-click the folder in Windows Explorer and select Enqueue in Foobar2000. Now select everything in FB2K (Ctrl-A), then right-click to get the pop-up menu and select Replaygain - Scan selection as multiple albums. This will add both track and album gain tags. What happens is that all of the tracks in each album are analysed, and after the last track in an album is done, it writes the tags to all the files in that album. If you switch on the console log display you'll see what's going on. As for rescanning the entire library: no that's not required. Just replaygain scan the new CD(s). Also, FB2K has an option to only scan and apply replaygain if the file doesn't already have the tags. If you switch this option on, then even if you tell FB2K to replaygain your entire collection, it'll (very quickly) skip all those that were already done. (Sorry, I'm at work right now and don't recall the exact place where this option is set). -- cliveb ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The audio connects and plays fine but starts to garble in as little as 30 seconds. The effect is of very short bursts of audio played in the wrong order with occasional short gaps. This degrades further until it sounds like two garbled streams superimposed over each other. A friend of mine thinks it sounds great and wants to sample it for a track. I reported intermittent playback with 6.2 in another thread. Well using the remote was one of the thinsg that provoked the problem. It even happened once last night with 6.1.1. I had been lying on the couch listening for about a half hour. I then wanted to know what track was playing. I had shut off the laptop, so I picked up the remote and pressed 'Now Playing'. All hell then broke loose. The music stopped and then came back intermittently, a quick sample every few seconds. The display on the SB2 became corrupt. One of the things displayed was 'Cannot connect to SlimServer'. I powered up the laptop and was unable to connect to SlimServer. The quick snatches of music were continuing all the while. I went upstairs to the server machine. SlimServer was still running but 20 minutes later it still had not recovered its composure. Seems that uninstalling and then going back to 6.1.1 (and reloading the old firmware) has not cured all the problems introduced by 6.2. -- technobear Chris Arcam CD192 and SB2 ATC SIA2-150 Dynaudio Contour 1.1 and REL Storm III ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Ok, just put a new version up - 0.09.. I've hopefully fixed the punctuation and accented characters in filename/path problems. Bit of a nightmare. Previously the tracks I was telling the server to play were relative to the server root, but it didnt seem to like this when there were %E6 type characters in the path, so I had to pass in the full path to the mp3 - drive letters and everything.. Great.. Everything was working.. until I tried a .lnk file.. Arghh.. Anyhow, to cut a long story short, when I scan, I now build a list of .lnk files and their targets and store this in the .moo file. When resolving a track which has a .lnk in the path, I use this cached .lnk target to get the full absolute path to the mp3 file.. So, anyhow, fingers crossed it should work a bit better now.. The .moo file-format's had to be changed to accomodate the .lnks, so it may ask you to rescan the next time you fire it up. I've also included the current playlist feature I've been working on. The screenshot on the site shows what to expect. It's pretty basic - it lists the currently queued up tracks and allows you to jump about them via double-clicking. It's very much work-in-progress, and should get a bit slicker in future releases.. Oh, and another feature's the little 'M's in the album list and playlist.. They show the rough file-types for the item.. For an album containing flac files, you should get an 'F' instead of an 'M', and for oggs, you'd get an 'O', etc.. Any problems, etc, give us a shout.. [slim] Slimserver 6.2 - more strange behaviour
On my initial attempt to install 6.2 the installer couldn't delete the old slimserver.exe. After a manual delete of the .exe all was OK with the install but the 'starting slimserver runs forever' problem reported by others then happened. A total deinstall of all slimserver followed by reboot / reinstall brought everything to a working state, the SB2 was updated also in this process. All OK for a couple of days with one quirk - I notice that where previously under 6.1 the volume control was inactive (I use the optical connect)it's now active and, even stranger, my SKY+ remote drives the volume control on the SB2. Then followed some auto updates, AV stuff etc so I had a forced reboot. Since reboot 6.2 does the following 'starting / started / stopped' all this takes about 20 seconds and if I try again it's the same result. I've now gone back to 6.1 and working OK - and SKY+ remote doesn't drive the SB2 any longer. Think I'll wait till 6.5 is released before upgrading again (then I'll use 6.2.n). A restart brings SlimServer to a stable state but it quickly consumes about 210MB of RAM. A rescan causes another crash with the same number of tracks... 90. MP3s play but WMAs do not (perhaps a second then client loses contact with SS although the service doesn't crash, just uses high CPU). Checking the list of 90 tracks, some are repeated as Unknown even though they are also listed corrected under artist and album. Tried 6.2.0 with same results. Tried 6.1.1 with same results. Tried 5.4.1... works perfectly as it always has. Same system, same tracks, same file structure, same service settings but 6.x doesn't work and 5.4.1 does. [slim] Re: SlimServer seriously Broken
Today is another day as they say :-) Tried 6.2.1 beta. Sames problems. As I was able to provoke the problems even on 6.1.1 this set me thinking that the software can't be the whole problem here. Is it the disk? Is it the network? Is it a process problem? When music is playing normally, the disk is only accessed occasionally so it shouldn't be a disk throughput problem. One thing that did cause problems, though I'm at a loss to understand why, is after 30 minutes of being ignored when the server decides to switch off the monitor. This causes intermittent play and I can see on the SB2 that the buffer is empty. Operating the mouse so as to bring the monitor back on doesn't restore normal operation though. H? Looked at the Task Manager. Slim.exe doesn't use much CPU. It varies between 0% and 30% but is mostly 0%, 3% or 6% so it's not hammering the CPU. Something else was though :-( WinXPDisableZeroConfig.exe This application is a little disaster area that ships with my Belkin router and I have discovered that it can be harmlessly disabled. Having done so, this still didn't fix the problem. H? I wonder then if it is a network problem after all. SB2 reports signal strength of 98% and the server also reports a very good signal and low noise. I booted the laptop as it's in the same room as the SB2 and told it to look for networks. Mine runs on channel 11 and I found a neighbours system running on channel 3 so that shouldn't be a problem. Hm? The music is still intermittent throughout all this. Weird. On a whim I looked at the back of the server. The firewire link to the hard disk was passing very close to the WiFi aerial. I rearranged things so that the WiFi aerial now has plenty of space around it. The SB2 has been playing fine since then. It may simply have been interference between the firewire cable and the WiFi aerial at the back of the server. [slim] Remote conf file for Panasonic SA-XR55?
I just got a Panasonic SA-XR55 AVR to replace my old Onkyo receiver. I want to be able to hook up the SB2's IR blaster again. Does anyone have a .conf file for the XR55's remote control? [slim] Re: Moose 0.05
Upgraded to 6.2.1 - 4900 the current playlist is working fine now. Would it be possible to have the ability to delete and move items on the palylist? it also makes it more important, for me anyway, to have the nowplaying always on top. This is starting to look really good! I just wished I had some programming ability left (years of neglect) to be able to help you develop this. -- mattybain That suit's as sharp as a page of Oscar Wilde witticisms that have been rolled up into a point, sprinkled with lemon juice and jabbed into someone's eye! - Ace, Stoke Me A Clipper ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Craig, James (IT) Wrote: Are you sure it's a SB1 - it has the two line character based display with each line equal size? This is not a good way to tell if it is an original SB1. The SB1 came in two forms. The first ones had a two line text display. The updated ones got a graphical display, but it is lower resolution than the SB2 display. There was an upgrade process to go from the text display to a graphical display. Since the SB2 is on sale for $179 (wired-only version) $250 does seem quite high for a SB1. alex -- awetmore ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: SB3 geek port? (I want a REAL snooze button)
An idea occured to me as I walked into the room with the SB2 and its screen was dark. It would be very slick if a motion detection sensor could be attached which would automatically wake up the display to full brightness when someone entered the room. My initial thinking was around power savings, but then realized the motion sensor would probably consume more power than the screen, but I have no idea. Still it would be nice if the SB could darken, say after 5 minutes, and then automatically go to full brightness when someone enters the room. Any thoughts on this? -- MrC ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: System requirements for 6.2
I'm running version 6.2 on a LinkstationHG which (I think) is a MIPs running at 270MHz and 128MHz RAM. I've not (yet) had any problems with audio dropouts or real performance issues. I do use .flac so that the server doesn't have to do any transcoding. The web interface is a little sluggish but bearable. The remote control interface is reasonably/acceptably responsive. I have approx 350 CDs ripped. All in all I'm delighted with the whole deal! My linkstation spec seems to be quite a bit lower than the minimum requred spec of a PC. I presume if I used transcoding I would need a system closer to that recommended. Also I don't use the linkstation for anything else. I hope Slim Devices don't start to push up the minimum requirements so that they can bundle in new whiz-bang features to the cost of making these 'low end' servers unusable. It would be a real shame if low power quiet servers such as linkstations became non-viable in future. Having said all that I do like new features(!) and fully understand things have to move forward. It would be great though if Slim can achieve this without having to compromise on the minumum spec requirements for the server machine. [slim] IR STOP Command?
Is there a remote STOP command available in the IR remote code set? I've been using the PAUSE command to stop the SQ2 player at night, and then PLAY to start it again in the morning. However, if the player had previously been paused, giving it anouther PAUSE command causes it to play, which is very annoying! Is there a discreet STOP command that will do the same thing as PAUSE; i.e., stop playing at that point in the playlist and resume from the same point later, that will not toggle? I can use POWER, but that also toggles . . . I'm using SQ2 with a StarGate system to automate my house, so the IR commands are sent by the automation system as part of a Good Night and Wake Up sequence, not directly from the IR remote . . . Re: [slim] UK Computer Shopper round up of Wireless Media Players - Squeezebox 2/5
mattybain said the following on 28/10/2005 15:28: - No UPnP support Personally, I'd like to see UPnP support somewhere in either the SB or slimserver. What suprised me the most with this roundup is that there is absolutely no mention of sound quality. Like is that not important??? The review was in UK *COMPUTER* Shopper, right? People who buy computers also buy speakers that are rated at 5,000W. 'nuff said. Come on guys what is the point of having a Wireless media player if it sounds like cr*p. The screen also didn't get a mention which is surprising as we are comparing players with a seriously good screen with ones without one at all. Also no mention of the 11g wireless, open source nature of the software, the number of plugins, WMA/FLAC native decoding etc etc Shoddy. It's a poor mag.
