press and hold the power button, or unplug and replug the squeezebox.
on startup, you'll be shown the setup menu.
scroll down to view current settings
in the menu, you'll see the MAC address. press right, and you should
be able to edit it from there.

FW28 from 6.2.1 is supposed to contain at least a couple attempts to
prevent this. If the problem persists, there will be more attempts.
all indications are that it is a hard issue to reproduce on demand,

I think the original problem is simply down to me copying the URL from

then it might work. A number of software players (winamp for one) work
 this way.

You might want to check out this review in Design Technica:

I glanced quickly over the manuals. It seems that you really need a PC

Then you need a TV to operate the thing, because it has no display of
 its own.

Perhaps someone else on the list will write and say they have one and
 know it accepts http streams.

 Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice - I did actually have an XP laptop which I used
to get the device set up. Sadly, the software for the device is so
badly written that I wasn't even able to get the device up and running
properly - the XP driver didn't load properly. A quick scoot round the
net shows that this is a fairly common problem and Linksys' technical
support is as useful as a chocolate teapot! After spending 3 hours this
morning trying to coax the device into life, I packed it all back in its
boax and will take it back to the retailer for a refund. Serves me right

2005-12-28 Thread brothers

I've got a couple of WMA11Bs, and they've worked quite well. Only real
problem is the UI - it's painful scrolling through a large music
collection, and there's no search capability. One of them has now been
replaced by an SB3. I don't know if it's possible to stream to one from
SlimServer - I'll probably poke at it later today.

One thing I did try, after reading your first post, was to program
SlimServer's streaming URL into one of the Internet Radio Favorites
slots in a LinkSys WMLS11B (another wireless media widget), and that
worked quite well. No remote control of volume, but music selection is
vastly easier than through the device's three-line LCD.

Pulsating noise which was way, way louder than the actual output from

the SB2 volume set to just above half way.

This is my 3rd SB2 as the others simply died after 3 months or so of

Serves me right for being a cheapskate I suppose!

I was tempted by them too, especially since they are nationally
distributed and supported, you can pick them up in most electronics
stores, best buy, future shop, etc. They're inexpensive. They may not
be high quality sound but for a lot of applications, the sound quality
is going to get thrown away by environmental noise or the downstream
speakers anyways.

But they just seemed, I don't know, I couldn't really put my hands on
it but every detail on the box description and on the web site was not
quite the way I would have done it, every feature had a bit missing or
done wrong, I just couldn't cozy up to the thing and get a good feeling
about it.

In the end, especially in the US (where I am not), you can buy used
sqeezeboxen for about the same price, and they have a chance of working
well with my existing ones, etc.

[slim] Playlists act strange

Hi,

I use a SB1 and Slimserver 6.2.1 which I just installed after using

that I can not produce playlists. I usually use Browse by Folder to
identify songs to be added, as many songs are not tagged. Most are
FLAC. Sometimes it seems to go well, especially when I add songs one by
one. But when I try to add a folder of, say, 5 songs, suddenly thousands
of songs are added to the playlist. After that, the playlist can not be
cleared or deleted.

Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

[slim] Stream Over Internet: Ogg Not Working

2005-12-28 Thread logicology

Hello all,

I just got a squeezebox and have been playing with it nonstop. I am
trying to also stream my music collection from Slimserver through
WinAmp at work. I noticed that if I try to stream my OGGs, WinAmp never
gets the stream, and the Slimserver stops playing after 8-10 seconds. I
thought it may have been a firewall issue or network setting, but if I
stream an MP3, that does not happen and I get the stream as expected.

So in short: MP3s stream over the internet fine / OGGs do not stream
over the internet at all.

Is this a bug, limitation, or an incorrect setting somewhere?

Thanks,
Logic

[slim] Re: Nokia 770 Skin

2005-12-28 Thread macdaddy

Ben:

I have been using the SlimServer 6.2 version of new skin for a few days
now. It is great! Thanks for sharing.

I have a couple of suggestions.

First, have you considered to eliminate the Search Music icon from
the Browse Music box on bottom half of the homepage? I think this is a
duplicated command that also appears on top menu bar.

Second, have you considered making the skin a little bit bigger so it
is easier to read? When I am running the skin, I generally run it in
Full screen mode on my 770. Also, I turn off the Toolbar which frees
up another 1/2 or so on bottom of screen. The toolbar can easily be
turned off by going to View -- Show toolbar -- Full screen in
your browser and making sure it has NO check. I leave the toolbar
visible on Normal screen mode. I can toggle back forth using the
button on upper left top of 770. I don't know if anyone else has tried
this but I don't want to see the toolbar as I want the 770 to serve as a
glorified remote control when accessing the SlimServer. Thus, I have
some free space on the bottom of the screen that could be used for more
skin. I don't know if you can tell from the attached some screen shots
(I wanted another excuse to use the screen capture utility), but there
is plenty of extra space at the bottom without the toolbar visible.

These are just a couple of suggestions you may or may not have
previously considered. The skin is fantastic and thanks again for
sharing it with us.

[slim] Help! iTunes Library on External HD - SD Lib. Empty

I have had an Squeezebox for some time now with my iTunes library on an

Yesterday I downloaded the newest version of the Slimserver software

Settings and tried rescanning (with and without the iTunes box
checked), but it still shows nothing.

What can I do to get Slimserver to scan the correct library? If I need
to enter a path name in the Music Folder area, please advise me what I
need to put in there, because I tried: PSP-7000:iTunes: and
/psp-7000/itunes/ and neither of those worked.

Any help would be appreciated.

works at all, I think it worked on 5.4 version of Slimserver. At least,
that is what they show on the Roku site.

Ben,

Great job w/ this skin for the 770. I've just started exploring the
features available. I did notice that the refresh interval settings for
the browser aren't working for me with this skin. Default and fishbone
work. I have to do a manual refresh to update the 'now playing' window.
Is this a skin-specific issue??

Artist C

(missing Artists E...)

Artist B | Album 2 is classical, so there is lots of punctuation in the
song titles, and the song titles are long, etc. But if that caused the
failure, why would Artist C | Album 1 have shown up? There is nothing
unusual about Artist D | Album 1 that I can see.

I'm sure some of that MS junk can make use of comma separated files.

Use sqlite to dump your database into such a format and import it.

Or use MP3::Info and write something in perl to read the actual files.

[slim] Re: Getting Smartserver to see my iTunes playlists

2005-12-28 Thread biomech

OK, here's a strange one... my playlists have appeared. What did I do?
I shut off the slimserver service in Windows and I ran slim.exe from the
command line. When I did, I could see a lot of hard drive activity for
15+ minutes so I figure it was scanning my library. When it was done,
my playlists showed up.

I did all of this as a part of the iTunes Updater plugin install.
Hopefully this info along with the details I provided earlier will help
the programmers figure this bug out.

I have since ended slim.exe and gone back to the services version.
We'll see if the playlists stay there after the next time I scan.

Ben:

Another suggestion to add to my post 2 above, is to remove the back key
on the top of the menu bar. This is duplicated by the HARD KEY
backspace on the 770 just below the arrow keys. By elminating this
soft backspace key and the search key as mentioned above, you will have
a symmetrical quasi-matrix (4 across on top menu bar 4 across on
bottom Browse box).

Just a thought. Not trying to tell you what to do -- it is after all
YOUR skin, but I thought you might want to consider a little tweaking

[slim] Bind slimserver to URL ?

Hello,
I am running the windows version of slimserver,
I also have a domain that is running off a local system
is there any way to have slimserver use the url of (for example)
http://www.mydomain.com:9000 instead of
http://MY_WAN_IP:9000/ ?

Clicking a link to http://www.mydomain.com:9000 does work,
but any page change in the slimserver changes the url to
http://MY_WAN_IP:9000/

Assuming the drift of the timebase (crystal?) in the squeezeboxen is
fairly low but there is some individual variation amongst them, a
better correction would be, at startup time, establish error in the
crystal and correct for it low in the timing chain.

Dropping frames, as you propose, would be audible. Correcting the clock
errors could be done much more fine-grained.

 Michael

either would be a vast improvement over the current situation though. I
tend to prefer the idea of dropping frames because I don't assume that the
clock is the only source of error. In fact, if I had to guess what causes
the synchronization issues that are seen now, I'd blame the TCP stack.

Anyway, as others have noted, multicast doesn't like wireless.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, all!

atlslim-- on the refresh thing...I commented out the javascript that
does the auto-refresh during my devlopment, and selectively neglected
to put it back in. Eventually, I'll put it back in there, although my
ideal fix is that instead of a full page refresh I can update page
elements through an AJAX/DOM sorta thing.

I'll give a quick response to several of the comments/suggestions made
on the thread--

Remove search icon on home page in favor of search in nav bar.

I sort of like search in the home page links section, but I see
your point. I'll give it some thought. I don't think the Statistics
icon has a lot of use either, and could easily be relegated to the
links in the page footer (well, for that matter, Genre is more or less
worthless for me and could go as well. I'm sure there are some OCD
Slim-users out there that have scrubbed/standardized/organized their
genre tags, but that's got to be the minority. Sorry, I digress)

Make skin easier to read.

absolutely, and thanks for the info on removing the toolbar in
full-screen mode. I hadn't explored that fully, and I am sure happy for
the extra screen real-estate.
there are definitely some css changes I want to make to increase
readability on the skin. that's high on my to-do list.

Remove back key on top nav bar.

I can't get behind this one. I've found in testing/using this skin
that I rely heavily on the back arrow icon on the nav bar, and while the
HARD KEY does the same thing, I am not a fan of switching between stylus
and button clicking. How come? I'm left-handed.

Mysterious disappearing volume controls.

weird stuff. I'll take a look at the skin and see if there's any
reason that table of controls wouldn't render when pointed to a non
squeezebox player.

Roku
don't care. good luck with your inferior product. ;)

thanks again for the suggestions--keep 'em coming! Sorry the dev
process is a little slow, but since returning from holiday I've been

[slim] Problem with Freezes

2005-12-28 Thread samlw

Hi all,

I've got a brand new Squeezebox 2 connected via wireless Airport to an
Airport Extreme base station in the next room. Signal strength is at
80%+.

Several times now, the Squeezebox has frozen up hard such that only
pulling the power plug will bring it back. It is totally unresponsive
to the remote control.

Initially, this seemed to be linked to browsing the web interface while
the Squeezebox was playing. More recently, the Squeezebox has frozen up
in the middle of playing a song, and nobody was accessing it at the
time. (The web browser was not even running).

The display is stuck with the name (and graphical frequency display) of
the song that was playing when the freeze occurred.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems? Do I have a bad unit?

Thanks,

Sam

 -- Mike

Theoretically, you are right. In practice, multicast does not like
wireless. Granted, it may be able to struggle along well enough to serve
the low-bandwidth needs of a Squeezebox stream, but since there are plenty
of people unable to get that working now, I have my doubts.

On a side note, try typing Theory into Google Earth :)

Anyway, multicast (much like Ethernet itself) rather requires that all
nodes in the group are able to operate at a lowest common denominator
speed. WAPs deal with this situation by either breaking the bus down into
bridged zones based on the connection speeds attained by the connected
nodes, or by forcing all nodes to the speed attained by the slowest node.
Therefore an IP multicast group may contain members who are at 1.1 mbps
half-duplex and members who are at 11 mbps half-duplex. A WAP that's
bridging into a real Ethernet is even worse, as now the fast end of the
pool is 100 Mbps full-duplex.

End result is that your entire multicast group bumbles along at 50% of 1.1
mbps in order to cater to the slowest node, who is still complaining
mightily that it's going too fast and that he's missing half the packets.
By doing unicast streams instead, most nodes perform fine and the slow
node is the only one who sucks. Sure, you could write your multicast so
that slow complainers get dropped, but why would SDI go to that effort for
this application?

 Hello all,

It's a limitation of your upstream bandwidth, and the fact that OGG is
decoded on the server and streamed, rather than being decoded on the
squeezebox!

Luckily, it's easily remedied:

Open a browser to your slimserver, select your player, and in the
player-settings, click the audio link. Towards the bottom, there's a
bit-rate limiting option. If chosen, and you have LAME installed,
it'll convert the OGG to MP3 and stream that (at the desired bit-rate).

Hmmm, just noticed that you're using WinAmp at work. I don't know if
that will show up as a player in the slimserver web interface. You
might want to give SoftSqueeze a shot. (Less clunky, imho, than trying
to use the webinterface to choose what songs to play, with the added
bonus of getting you used to the remote-control).

At any rate, you don't want to change your bit-rate settings for your
hardware squeezebox, as that will just make it unnecessarily degrade
the audio.

You could be running into the same issue I was by doing something

[slim] Re: New copy protection and Squeezebox

2005-12-28 Thread Pale Blue Ego

Play dumb. When you buy a CD you can't rip to your iPod or
Slimserver, call or email the record company. Tell them you need to
get the music onto your iPod and so what should you do? Take the CD
back or download the tracks off the net? After all, there really isn't
any other choice - make sure you let them know that the DRM CD is
useless to you.

The funny thing is, you'll probably get an email telling you how to
disable the copy protection. We've seen this with the Sony rootkit
fiasco. They actually ended up providing mp3 files to customers who
bought the CD - that's the very thing the DRM was supposed to prevent!

[slim] Re: D-Link Range Extender

2005-12-28 Thread stoobie-doo

I had tried a range extender from Airlink with similar problems - and
finally gave up. Have you verified that other devices can get IP
addresses from the range extender? Have you verified that your router
now sees those devices?

[slim] Re: Improve SB3 buffering?

Is there anyway to boost the antenna strength or connect an external
 antenna to the SB3?

Try Belkin Pre-N router. They are now quite reasonably priced. Very
significantly impoved range and signal quality for me. This is
 comparing to
 Motorola G router.

 No hacking required :)

 Hope it helps.

Hmm.. I had stayed away from pre-N and Mimo because I thought I needed
the same tech on both ends. Are you using the Pre-N with matching
equipment in your server? Are you seeing signal improvements at the SB
also?

[slim] Re: Problem with Freezes

2005-12-28 Thread samlw

In my hang, holding power had no effect. The SB3 was frozen solid, and
only pulling the power plug revived it.
Same with me. As I said, the SB is completely unresponsive to the
remote when the freeze occurs. And nobody was accessing it at the time
it froze, either via remote or via the web interface. It was simply
playing an album. During the 12th track, it just stopped - frozen
solid. I let it sit for an hour before finally pulling the power cord,
after which it started back up instantly and began playing right where
it had left off when it had frozen up an hour before...

[slim] Re: Extremely loud white noise from Squeezebox?!

2005-12-28 Thread JJP

me too..using AlienBBC. the white noise repeated every 3mins or so.

I set a debug going which captured nothing of note as far as I can
tell.

If this happens again, any suggestions as to which debug settings I
should log?
