[slim] Slimbox for travellers
I am travelling quiet a bit and am looking for a smart way to take the slimbox along. In most hotels I can connect wireless with the laptop and squeezbox. Ok try #2 :) Now the code searches all the subdirectories of any directories given on the command line and it tries to be semi-smart about not getting itself into an infinite loop if a subdir is a link to a dir it's already seen, or if you name a dir twice by mistake. It dumps all the .dii in the directory you call the script from and names them after the directories it looked in. I chose to have an underscore replace slashes in the name of the dir. Hope this works for ya. The ZyXEL router is being used only for the ADSL modem. The new router has Gigabit ethernet and a stronger wireless signal. I would much rather have got an all-in-one device with Gigabit ethernet, good wireless and integrated modem, but there doesn't seem to be such a thing on the market as yet. I just went back to just using the ZyXEL and can get onto the network with the SB3 and log into SqueezeNetwork, but I still cannot get it to find SlimServer. I've had my two SB3s working all week through just the ZyXEL router (with dropouts due to wireless strength), but now I can't get them to pickup SlimServer at all. I still can't connect to SlimServer using only the ZyXEL router so I thought I'd post back with some more info. The ZyXEL router is taking care of the DHCP IP assignment. The SB3 is connecting to the wireless network and is being successfully assigned its own IP address. I can ping the SB3 from my desktop. I can also view the GUI on the server box (running ClarkConnect), I can see that the SlimServer service is running and I can also ping the server. I'm using WPA-PSK, the same as I was prior to messing around with the new router last night. During the messing around, I reset the ZyXEL to factory settings several times after losing the Internet, so I'm guessing that something that was set correctly before is no longer set correctly. I've switched off the Firewall in the router and powered it off and back on again. And the latest develoment is that I can no longer connect to SlimServer in my browser with http://slimserver:9000 Could it be something to do with these settings: [image: http://www.celticguitartalk.com/misc/sb_01.jpg] Someone please help! OK, understand the problems... So, at the moment you've gone back to just the one router - the SBs can get onto the network and connect to Squeezenetwork- but can't find Slimserver. This suggests that either slimserver isn't running (check you can access it from a browser on a PC) or is being blocked by a firewall. Or your SBs are very confused from the changes in configuration and need to be taken back to a hard factory reset. [slim] MAC Help
Hello all I have been a keen Slimserver user since I bought my first Slimp3 – I have just set a friend of mine with 2 x SB3 running on a MAC. I have no experience of Mac (and although he uses it for his work – he knows nothing about networking etc). My primary problem is this: In Slimserver settings I want to specify the music folder. The software installed and seems to point to an Itunes folder on hard disk 1 (HD1), in the web interface the format is: /users/alexvonkoettlitz/music where ‘alexvonkoettlitz’ is the username that he logs in with and ‘music’ is the folder name containing the music sub folders. What we actually want to do is specify folders on HD2 (a second hard disk) as the default location for the music. I tried creating an alias to HD2 and dropping it into the existing music folder but it did not find the new music following a re-scan. What format/syntax do I use to specify this alternative music location? We do not want to utilise any Itunes integration if we can avoid it. A second question is centered around the scenario where he has a PC running ‘Tag & Rename’ to do the tag updating but he can only see the folders under his username on the MAC from the PC – how can I get the folders from the second drive to appear? Any pointers gratefully appreciated. Kind regards Richard Scales ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Can't connect to SlimServer
Thanks for staying with me on this ceejay. Your help is very much appreciated. I did the hard factory reset on the SBs, disabled Wireless g+ on the router and changed the 802.11 mode from 802.11g only to Mixed. I then saw that my Clark Connect OS had switched from Standalone (No Firewall) mode to Standalone -- that's happened before so I should have been alert to it, but I missed it. The end result of all that is that I'm back online with my SB3s and can access SlimServer from the browser. Yay! A whole morning's work to bring me back to where I was at teatime last night. So, now I have to try and get the new router in the mix somehow. Should I disable the DHCP server in the new router, or the old one? Or doesn't it matter? The chain will be the old router between the phone socket and new router, and then the server and two client PCs plugged into the new router. I suppose it would make sense to disable both wireless and DHCP on the old router, but would that affect the IP address for getting out to the Internet? I do so wish I could have found a router with Gigabit ethernet, modem and wireless. I find it strange that such a device is not yet available. Time for some lunch and then for some more tinkering. Maybe I'll be able to get onto the unicode tag problem by this evening! Sure- There are several ways to do this using SuperDateTime. Assuming that you have the plugin working, go to the server settings -> plugins web page. From this page, in the SuperDateTime Screensaver section there will be an option called Weather Format String (if this option does not exist, upgrade to a newer version of SuperDateTime). This section is normally used to customize what and how weather information is displayed. You can also use it to enter your own custom message. Simply delete what's in there and enter your own message instead. Hopefully this should work for you. [slim] Music Magic resulting in duplicate songs
I am still having the problem with having a duplicate of every song in the library when MusicMagic is installed. The library ended up with 2 entries for each song, one with mm and one without. I really like MM, and it helps me to open up my music library. But this annoying "feature" takes away my ability to play albums without every song appearing in the playlist twice. One solution that someone suggested is to leave the music location in slimserver blank. This seemed to have worked but it also took away slim capability like displaying album art. [slim] Beautiful Squeezebox ... Ugly Amplifier
My two new Squeezeboxes arrived a few days ago, and my wife and I are pretty amazed at the sound quality. My wife, a serious technophobe, is rapidly falling in love with the device (setting up a playlist with all her favorite radio stations helped). So now, I have this beautiful new device in my family room, sitting on top of an ugly receiver and 5-disk CD changer. I would like to demote those two devices to the rec room (where the second squeezebox will go) and replace them with a small, sleek amplifier and single-disk CD player, something about half the width of a typical component (or one of those wall-mounted stereos). Our family room is fairly large, and so far the only devices I've found that fit the bill seem like they'd be pretty cheesy from a sound quality perspective. Can anyone recommend components that might fit the bill, preferably not in the price category of a Bang and Olufsen system? I have considered using powered speakers and foregoing the amp completely ... but I still need the ability to play the occasional CD. -- Jon Jon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2848 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20768 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If you are importing your music library information from Musicmagic you _must_ leave the Slimserver Music Library entry blank or you will get duplicate items. [slim] Squeezebox3 seems very buggy
I've just bought a new Squeezebox3 and I can't believe how buggy it seems to be. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be sending it back. 1) Fast forward doesn't work on WMA lossy (CBR or VBR) files. It says Scanning 2X but the audio stops and the progress bar doesn't move. Pressing play causes playback causes it to stop saying Scanning 2X but still no audio. Pressing play again causes playback to start from the beginning of the track. 2) Fast forward on FLAC and WAV causes the progress bar to stop working properly. It counting from 0 again towards the end of the track. It sorts itself out at the start of the next track. I also don't particularly like the way you have to press, hold and then release the button to make it do fast forward or fast forward faster. It would have been much better if the remote had individual buttons for fast forward and track advance. Failing that maybe the longer you hold the button for the faster it goes? 3) Rewind (on WAV and possibly FLAC) just after a track advance causes it to say Scanning -2X but the audio stops and the progress bar doesn't move. Pressing play causes playback to resume. 4) By default WAV gets transcoded to FLAC for no good reason. You save ~25% bandwidth but lose the ability to fast forward or rewind and plus use up CPU time on the server. 5) Playing WMA VBR files on the squeezebox sometimes introduces artifacts. They are not present if the files are transcoded to WAV or FLAC on the server. 6) Sometimes trying to select an internet radio station on the squeezebox with the remote won't work but the same station can be selected using the web interface. 7) In the browse by folder menu using the alphanumeric keys to quickly jump to a particular letter doesn't work properly. The PQRS TUV and WXYZ buttons cause it to get into a state where none of the buttons work correctly. You have to back out of the menu to fix it (and then it only works until you press one of those buttons again). This behaviour doesn't happen when browsing by artist or album. I don't think any of my problems are caused by networking issues. I have 80% signal strength and never have any kind of dropouts. All the things I have seen are completely repeatable. Some of them may already be fixed - try a 6.2 nightly. WMA support was new in 6.1 so the bugs may well be sorted (I don't know 'cos I don't use it). 2) fair comment on the button operation, but there is a plugin that allows you to jump to any point in a song I think. Maybe that would work for you. 3) is correct - you have shuttled back to the start of the song and can't go any earlier. 4) if you don't like the default setting, just change it in Server Settings -> File Types by unchecking that particular conversion type. It's pretty easy to force it to stream the format you want. 7) I have seen something like this, but not for a while. If you get it after trying 6.2, either file a bug or post here and I'll file one! -- Patrick Dixon www.at-tunes.co.uk Patrick Dixon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=90 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20773 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Thanks for your reply. I just tried the latest beta and it seems to have all the same bugs plus a new one. 8) After fast forwarding a WAV file and resuming playback it plays back okay for a few seconds and then becomes slow and choppy. And some more comments 3) If you rewind from the middle of a track it is possible to rewind through the track break into the previous track. So why is this not possible from the start of a track? 7) This bug is definitely still present in both 6.2.1 and the latest beta. -- shawkie shawkie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3751 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20773 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I just downloaded SlimServer 6.2.2 from the public download page at slimdevices.com. I'm upgrading from a working version of 6.2.1. I copied both *.conf files from the 6.2.1 directory to the 6.2.2 directory and ran 6.2.2. I was asked to run the build-perl-modules script. Then 6.2.2 started up with no complaints. But when it came up, and I tried to play a song, the SB2 displayedthe message > PROBLEM: Can't open file for > (song title) I rescanned the music library with the "clear all" option. I got the same message for any song I tried to play. I switched back to 6.2.1, and incidentally was asked to run the build-perl-modules script again (even though 6.2.1 had already been up and running!). Songs played just fine. I'm running Slackware Linux 8.1 with a 2.4 kernel and perl 5.8.7. One thing that I have noticed is that when I try to install DBD::SQLite using CPAN, it will compile but fails one test. [slim] Re: Squeezebox3 seems very buggy
If you're new to the Squeezeboxes, a few comments are in order. People on this list know most of this stuff, but forget that newcomers don't. The Squeezebox is a "thin" client (the "slim" in the name), so there's not all that much in the box itself. A processor, a software DSP, stuff for the display, the DAC, some memory for a buffer, a network interface, power regulation, a few other things). Oh, the wireless card if you have a wireless one. Most of the "decisions" are made in the server, which is open source and easily updated or modified. Almost everything you wrote about is really coding in the server, not the squeezebox itself. So when people say "it's not the squeezebox", what they mean is, it's not something that needs firmware updates, therefore it is easy to fix. There are people on the list who can answer, in more details, whether what you're describing is a bug, whether it's been fixed in the beta releases already or not, and how to go about getting it fixed. One of the things that isn't clear about the squeezebox initially is that there are so many music formats, so many methods of accessing the server, etc, that not all options get properly checked out and sometimes bugs slip through. -- Michaelwagner Michaelwagner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20773 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Not sure which tag editor you are using, but not all support "part of a compilation" so you may not see it. You can try downloading Tag&Rename. You get a 30 day free trial. Go to the multi-field tab (across the top of the screen), load up the affected albums, select all, select "Edit all supported tag fields". Don't touch anything else but uncheck the "Part of compilation" field and press save. Test it's worked by selecting just one file and "Edit all supported tag fields" - the compilation box should be empty now. You will need to do a full library rescan (bit of a pain) but this should sort it out. -- Siduhe Siduhe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20749 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If you fill in both you're effectively telling Slimserver to look in two places for music, which is why you see duplicate items. That's how it's supposed to work. if the root source is the same, they should merge without duplicates. However, some versions of MMM are known to have a problem with character encoding, if you have a lot of unicode tracks. Some versions of slimserver have also incorrectly imported the data. Unfortunately, with so many versions, nightlies, etc, I cannot recall if this was a known problem with 6.2.1 specifically. I'd try 6.2.2 for starters, and the latest from MMM. I'm using SS 6.5, with MMM 1.5 for linux and the merge perfectly. The only issue currently is that MMM import slows to a painful crawl at around 6500 songs when importing at the same tme as music folder. So, I empty the music folder setting to run a wipe library and scan. When that is complete (and I do get artwork from that too), I then enter a music folder. That runs a 'look for new' scan on the musicfolder, and gets any tracks that MMM didn't handle. Your missing album art from MMM is likely due to encoding errors as well =k ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
