This isn't being written to intentionally advocate Linux over Windows. This is just from experience. My linux box: 1.8Ghz Athlon XP, 512, Slackware 10.2, Slim 6.2.2 series, music playing off two Squeeze's, XMMS, and random file transfers across the network (photos, video). NEVER a hiccup. (This excludes the 'out of space' errors related to 6.2.1) The damned Windows box at work: 2.4Ghz Celery D, 512MB, Slim 6.2.1, only Softsqueeze from another box and some network access. Damn thing drops *ALL* the time. Microsoft's implementation of TCP/IP is borked. Ideally, do a text based install on a distro, don't run X, stick in the corner. FWIW, there's a memory leak in 6.2.1 (at least on linux). I was advised to upgrade to a nightly 6.2.2. Re: [slim] Library problem - can anyone help?
A trailing space? You might want to try loading all the tracks into Mp3tag, highlighting all the ones from the first disc and selecting the album title from the drop-down list. It will populate the list with whatever entries are in the group you selected. That way, the entire disc will have exactly the same title, including a trailing space you might have missed. Save the tags. Clear library and rescan - there would be no way the disc titles wouldn't be the same after that. It's important to clear the library and rescan. "Look for new and changed music" often gives exactly the result you're showing below. BTW regarding EAC and damaged discs - it's amazing the different performance between different drives. I had one CD that took 2 days in my laptop but only 5 minutes in my desktop! I had a problem ripping a 2 CD set because disc 1 had an imperfection in the CD. EAC spent 3 days on it and keeps locking up - I was just missing the last track. A friend has the disc though and ripped the track in question for me. After he sent it to me I converted the wav into FLAC, edited the metadata and rescanned my library (cleared and rescanned). For some reason, track 11 - the track he sent me - is showing up seperately from the Disc 1 collection so that it appears seperately. I checked it in "TagEditor", "ID3-TagIT 3", and even WinAmp with a FLAC plugin - it appears as though the album info reads correctly. Why is Slim Server keeping it outside of the album? See the screen below to see what I am talking about - there should not be two entries for "Dead Can Dance - Live in Chicago - October 2005 - Disc 1"... Any suggestions? I think you misunderstood me. I am by no means advocating a faster processor. The Mini should be fine. The problem is the combination of the small buffer in the SLiMP3 and the bloat introduced in the newer versions of the slimserver SW that only become evident with that small buffer. I tried running 6.2.1 on my G5 iMac 2Ghz and still had drop outs on my SLiMP3. For what it's worth, I can run 6.02 of the Slimserver SW and it works great. [slim] Re: Buffer drained, pausing playback
I have been in your same situation, but switching to the Roku is not the answer. As it was described to me, after I essentially pitched a fit here, the SLiMP3 has a very small buffer. Do a little searching and you'll find the Wiki page which compares it to the newer devices. Given this relatively small buffer, what I have experienced with my SLiMP3 and the SlimServer is that any release post 6.02 impacts my playback such that I get the same cut outs that you get. Unlistenable. This is b/c with the small buffer there is little wiggle room from the server if you put any other load on it. And I have a dedicated G4 Sawtooth with a gig or RAM and 10.3.9. I would offer the caveat that many seem to be able to support running current Slimserver releases on the SLiMP3 without issues, but these folks mostly have either small libraries or have the time to dick around with settings all day to optimize playback. If you use the Mini for other tasks, you've also introduced additional hits in processing that help to drain the buffer. You have two reasonable options - drop back to an earlier version of Slimserver, losing some bells & whistles, or buy a new Squeezebox with a larger buffer. -- Bonesteel Bonesteel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1438 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20783 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

http://www.htguys.com/audio/2006/HDTV-2006-02-03.mp3 This is done by the HT Guys; a very positive review covering most aspects of the SB -- Closed vs. open source, remotes (Sonos' killer remote vs. PDAs/Nokias), high-quality audio engineering, competition, even their attempts at synchronization and resulting (positive) interaction with Slim support personnel, and more. This was one of the best reviews of th SB I've heard/read. These behringer monitors are $100, and include a 24/96 DAC, but the DAC probably wouldn't help if you can only hook them up via headphone jack. [slim] Buffer drained, pausing playback
Here's the situation. I have a Mac mini 1.42 GHz 1GB DDR SDRAM running OSX 10.4.4 Slimserver 6.2.1 and a SliMP3. This is the household mac but is also the slimserver. I have two additional 200GB external Firewire and USB2 HD. The music is on the Firewire drive. My music playback will stall, in the middle of playback, every couple of songs for about 5 seconds then resume. I believe this is a snippit from the log file (at the end) from when a stall occured. I included the lines before and after incase they can help. I beleive the "***Stream underrun: 200" is where the problem begins. The computer can be idle and this happens. There appears to be a spike in the processor when it happens but I thinks it's slimserver tring to fix the problem. I don't use the web interface for anything but setting preferences. This seems to be a problem that only came up since the last upgrade. Is there any fix for this? At this point I'm considering going with a Roku SoundBridge if this can't be fixed. 2006-02-04 16:10:06.4776 Generating page for status_header.html took: 0 wallclock secs ( 0.02 usr + 0.00 sys = 0.02 CPU) 2006-02-04 16:10:06.8304 Generating page for playlist.html took: 0 wallclock secs ( 0.01 usr + 0.00 sys = 0.01 CPU) 2006-02-04 16:10:17.4075 DBI: Supressing periodic commit - no dirty items 2006-02-04 16:10:36.8353 Generating page for status_header.html took: 0 wallclock secs ( 0.02 usr + 0.00 sys = 0.02 CPU) 2006-02-04 16:10:37.2118 Generating page for playlist.html took: 0 wallclock secs ( 0.01 usr + 0.00 sys = 0.01 CPU) 2006-02-04 16:10:44.4561 browsedb - hierarchy: age, track level: 0 2006-02-04 16:11:12.7645 Generating page for status_header.html took: 0 wallclock secs ( 0.02 usr + 0.00 sys = 0.02 CPU) 2006-02-04 16:11:12.9464 ***Stream underrun: 200 2006-02-04 16:11:12.9479 00:04:20:04:19:5dBuffer drained, pausing playback 2006-02-04 16:11:12.9733 00:04:20:04:19:5d Buffer full, starting playback 2006-02-04 16:11:13.3437 Generating page for playlist.html took: 0 wallclock secs ( 0.01 usr + 0.00 sys = 0.01 CPU) 2006-02-04 16:11:13.3636 DBI: Supressing periodic commit - no dirty items 2006-02-04 16:11:14.9004 Generating page for browsedb.html took: 30 wallclock secs ( 1.64 usr + 0.74 sys = 2.38 CPU) 2006-02-04 16:11:43.3098 Generating page for status_header.html took: 0 wallclock secs ( 0.02 usr + 0.00 sys = 0.02 CPU) 2006-02-04 16:11:43.3672 DBI: Supressing periodic commit - no dirty items 2006-02-04 16:11:43.7085 Generating page for playlist.html took: 0 wallclock secs ( 0.00 usr + 0.00 sys = 0.00 CPU) 2006-02-04 16:12:13.3772 DBI: Supressing periodic commit - no dirty items 2006-02-04 16:12:13.6639 Generating page for status_header.html took: 0 wallclock secs ( 0.02 usr + 0.00 sys = 0.02 CPU) 2006-02-04 16:12:13.8599 Generating page for playlist.html took: 0 wallclock secs ( 0.00 usr + 0.00 sys = 0.00 CPU) 2006-02-04 16:12:16.0276 forceCommit: syncing to the database. -- natemorriss natemorriss's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=483 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20783 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

This occurs because the wireless network (and dialup) has a higher priority over the wired ethernet connection, and takes over the default route and routing information. You need to setup a manual route on your PC to forward traffic to your first network whenever the second network is up. Bring up a command window and run the route command: route print to see the current routing situtation when your wireless connection is both enabled and disabled, and note the differences. You need a route passing traffic between your two networks. -- MrC MrC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=468 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20777 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I have a PC with 2 network cards installed to 2 seperate cable modems. Connection 1 is connected to a modem here at my desk which is also the same network my slim server is installed on. My slimserver is an older model (not wireless). A couple of weeks ago I added a second cable line (modem) to my home in which i set up a wireless network. I installed a wireless card on my pc so i could also use this second network that i set up upstairs. I did this so my family wouldn't have to deal with me killing all the bandwith on my desk's connection (edonkey, filesharing). My problem is this: When i have my wireless connection disabled in 'network and dial up connections' the slim server runs fine. When I have the wireless turned on, The slim server wont find the player. As soon as i turn off the wireless connection, It finds the player. Is there a way to specify exactly which network card the slimserver should use to connect to the player? That way i would be able to use my wireless network on my pc while i have my slimserver started. Thank you for any help!!! Re: [slim] Re: Music Magic resulting in duplicate songs
Siduhe wrote: If you are importing your music library information from Musicmagic you _must_ leave the Slimserver Music Library entry blank or you will get duplicate items. If you fill in both you're effectively telling Slimserver to look in two places for music, which is why you see duplicate items. That's how it's supposed to work. if the root source is the same, they should merge without duplicates. However, some versions of MMM are known to have a problem with character encoding, if you have a lot of unicode tracks. Some versions of slimserver have also incorrectly imported the data. Unfortunately, with so many versions, nightlies, etc, I cannot recall if this was a known problem with 6.2.1 specifically. I'd try 6.2.2 for starters, and the latest from MMM. I'm using SS 6.5, with MMM 1.5 for linux and the merge perfectly. The only issue currently is that MMM import slows to a painful crawl at around 6500 songs when importing at the same tme as music folder. So, I empty the music folder setting to run a wipe library and scan. When that is complete (and I do get artwork from that too), I then enter a music folder. That runs a 'look for new' scan on the musicfolder, and gets any tracks that MMM didn't handle. Your missing album art from MMM is likely due to encoding errors as well =k ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Not sure which tag editor you are using, but not all support "part of a compilation" so you may not see it. You can try downloading Tag&Rename. You get a 30 day free trial. Go to the multi-field tab (across the top of the screen), load up the affected albums, select all, select "Edit all supported tag fields". Don't touch anything else but uncheck the "Part of compilation" field and press save. Test it's worked by selecting just one file and "Edit all supported tag fields" - the compilation box should be empty now. You will need to do a full library rescan (bit of a pain) but this should sort it out. -- Siduhe Siduhe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20749 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Squeezebox3 seems very buggy
If you're new to the Squeezeboxes, a few comments are in order. People on this list know most of this stuff, but forget that newcomers don't. The Squeezebox is a "thin" client (the "slim" in the name), so there's not all that much in the box itself. A processor, a software DSP, stuff for the display, the DAC, some memory for a buffer, a network interface, power regulation, a few other things). Oh, the wireless card if you have a wireless one. Most of the "decisions" are made in the server, which is open source and easily updated or modified. Almost everything you wrote about is really coding in the server, not the squeezebox itself. So when people say "it's not the squeezebox", what they mean is, it's not something that needs firmware updates, therefore it is easy to fix. There are people on the list who can answer, in more details, whether what you're describing is a bug, whether it's been fixed in the beta releases already or not, and how to go about getting it fixed. One of the things that isn't clear about the squeezebox initially is that there are so many music formats, so many methods of accessing the server, etc, that not all options get properly checked out and sometimes bugs slip through. -- Michaelwagner Michaelwagner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20773 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I just downloaded SlimServer 6.2.2 from the public download page at slimdevices.com. I'm upgrading from a working version of 6.2.1. I copied both *.conf files from the 6.2.1 directory to the 6.2.2 directory and ran 6.2.2. I was asked to run the build-perl-modules script. Then 6.2.2 started up with no complaints. But when it came up, and I tried to play a song, the SB2 displayedthe message > PROBLEM: Can't open file for > (song title) I rescanned the music library with the "clear all" option. I got the same message for any song I tried to play. I switched back to 6.2.1, and incidentally was asked to run the build-perl-modules script again (even though 6.2.1 had already been up and running!). Songs played just fine. I'm running Slackware Linux 8.1 with a 2.4 kernel and perl 5.8.7. One thing that I have noticed is that when I try to install DBD::SQLite using CPAN, it will compile but fails one test. Thanks for your reply. I just tried the latest beta and it seems to have all the same bugs plus a new one. 8) After fast forwarding a WAV file and resuming playback it plays back okay for a few seconds and then becomes slow and choppy. And some more comments 3) If you rewind from the middle of a track it is possible to rewind through the track break into the previous track. So why is this not possible from the start of a track? 7) This bug is definitely still present in both 6.2.1 and the latest beta. -- shawkie shawkie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3751 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20773 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Some of them may already be fixed - try a 6.2 nightly. WMA support was new in 6.1 so the bugs may well be sorted (I don't know 'cos I don't use it). 2) fair comment on the button operation, but there is a plugin that allows you to jump to any point in a song I think. Maybe that would work for you. 3) is correct - you have shuttled back to the start of the song and can't go any earlier. 4) if you don't like the default setting, just change it in Server Settings -> File Types by unchecking that particular conversion type. It's pretty easy to force it to stream the format you want. 7) I have seen something like this, but not for a while. [slim] Squeezebox3 seems very buggy
I've just bought a new Squeezebox3 and I can't believe how buggy it seems to be. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be sending it back. 1) Fast forward doesn't work on WMA lossy (CBR or VBR) files. It says Scanning 2X but the audio stops and the progress bar doesn't move. Pressing play causes playback causes it to stop saying Scanning 2X but still no audio. Pressing play again causes playback to start from the beginning of the track. 2) Fast forward on FLAC and WAV causes the progress bar to stop working properly. It counting from 0 again towards the end of the track. It sorts itself out at the start of the next track. I also don't particularly like the way you have to press, hold and then release the button to make it do fast forward or fast forward faster. It would have been much better if the remote had individual buttons for fast forward and track advance. Failing that maybe the longer you hold the button for the faster it goes? 3) Rewind (on WAV and possibly FLAC) just after a track advance causes it to say Scanning -2X but the audio stops and the progress bar doesn't move. Pressing play causes playback to resume. 4) By default WAV gets transcoded to FLAC for no good reason. You save ~25% bandwidth but lose the ability to fast forward or rewind and plus use up CPU time on the server. 5) Playing WMA VBR files on the squeezebox sometimes introduces artifacts. They are not present if the files are transcoded to WAV or FLAC on the server. 6) Sometimes trying to select an internet radio station on the squeezebox with the remote won't work but the same station can be selected using the web interface. 7) In the browse by folder menu using the alphanumeric keys to quickly jump to a particular letter doesn't work properly. The PQRS TUV and WXYZ buttons cause it to get into a state where none of the buttons work correctly. You have to back out of the menu to fix it (and then it only works until you press one of those buttons again). This behaviour doesn't happen when browsing by artist or album. I don't think any of my problems are caused by networking issues. I have 80% signal strength and never have any kind of dropouts. All the things I have seen are completely repeatable. I'm using SlimServer 6.2.1 on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with SP2. So are all these problems likely to get fixed anytime soon or is my Squeezebox3 heading back to the supplier? -- shawkie shawkie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3751 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20773 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

There's really nothing to tweak or change, it is what it is. There have been many posts about problems with synch lately. As you can see, Richard is trying to find a novel way around it (native, fast playback rather than through Java). Plugging back in the ZyXEL to get to the Internet caused some problems, but a factory reset seems to have resolved that. I think the key to the whole thing was having the Turbo G (D-Link) or g+ (ZyXEL) switched on. What format is the album art in and how is it stored / named ? -- Siduhe Siduhe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20767 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] 6.2.1 Server won't start (after trying 6.5)
I tried 6.5 but wasn't happy with the number of problems so I am trying to revert to 6.2.1 (on Mac OS/X 10.4). Install went fine (install was recognized as an 'update') but server won't start. Seems to start for a couple of seconds but then fails. Suggestions? [just tried 6.2.2 but same problem] -- jmesberg jmesberg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3517 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20770 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: MAC Help
Did you try just setting the music folder within Slim server? It's on ther server settings page, you'll probably have to set it to something like /volumes/hd2/Music Folder. Also, make sure that 'Do Not use Itunes' is checked on that same page.
