Media Player.

It will be a Windows media stream. Did you even try to simply paste the
url into the "Radio tune in" field?

I'm moving this to the discussion list.

Hi,

take a look at the first Track, maybe there is something wrong with the
tag?

I had the same "Problem" and solved it, by retagging the whole Album.

You might try Mac Pro in Campbell. When I was shopping for my SB1, they

Run SoftSqueez on a PC other than the server (the PC running SlimServer)
connected in the way you are going to connect the Squeezebox - cable or
wireless.
This will give you an idea of how your network will handle the music
transfer and also how to drive the Squeezebox.

OK, this:

seems to work, but only when you type it in the URL address bar. When I
open the SlimServer window right-clicking at the icon at the bottom of

Does anybody know how to go back to the original skin permanently?

I recommed the Audioscrobbler and Last.FM plugins. The first one submits
your listening habits to the http://Last.FM site, and the second one plays
a radio station of music that you'll like (based on the first). Way cool.

I also really like LazySearch.

If you listen to a lot of Internet radio, AlienBBC is cool (but can be a

Nope, if you order direct from Slim, you save about
$25.

If you lived in a province outside of where you order
it, you'd save on PST. But if you're in Ontario, you

I don't mind at all if a local retailer knows about

Well it turns out that the prime reason not to go there is that the
device in question will work on windows computers as well as Apple
computers.

But of course, we both realize that if it only worked on Apple
computers it would hardly be worth mentioning.

Let's don't go there -- for one thing, all computers suck equally
(http://www.monkeynoodle.org/comp/suck), and for another thing Apple's
computer market share is growing exponentially. At the rates they're
showing, it doesn't take long to make insignificant into somewhat

Anyway, the most important thing to focus on when considering why not to
go there is this: flamewars are boring, and the phrase "Apple zealots" is
highly likely to start one.

The Apple device will do well among those who don't do any product

who do any searching for a product will end up at Squeezebox.

I recall being confused by this as well. The answer is that SlimServer

Can I get first dibs on your SB3? Because I'm betting that
either an Airport-like device will have a display or an ipod
will be internet capable within a year.

What would be useful is if the ipod could be used as a
remote for slimserver.

Because I don't want any company telling me what I can
do with the music I've purchased. It's bad enough that
I can't listen to music I purchased with iTunes before
I knew what I was doing can't be played in my car
(unless I do the burn/rip dance), but I'll be damned
if I'll let Apple (or slim, or any one company) tell me
what format I can or can't have my music stored in.

I like Macs and Apple in general. I still have a Mac Plus
from my college days (that actually runs). I just
hate what they've done to exploit the lemmings
otherwise known as consumers.

Yeah, i guess you right.

But I still don't think it'll dethrone the Squeezebox. The folks who

will do just fine for them. But those who care about sound will still

I have to agree that the iPod is complementary to the SqueezeBox.
Unfortunately, I do think that adding WiFi will cut into the market for
the SqueezeBox a little, but only if you truly can hold the iPod in your
hand while it plays music on your stereo. The iPod interface is as easy
to use as the SqueezeBox and the display size is irrelevant if you are
holding it in your hand. I believe that 128kb data is sufficient for
the average person, and the mediocre D/A converter in the iPod probably
is too. I suspect that battery life will take a serious hit, or the
size would have to increase for a bigger battery.

That said, I considered getting an iPod as a primary audio storage
device and decided that it wouldn't work for me because it didn't have
enough storage to be able to keep all of my music in a lossless format.
I also wanted an audiophile DAC and the option to "upgrade" to an
external DAC later if I wanted to. I do like the iPod as a portable
music system, though. When I'm on an airplane, I just want to drown
out the noise of the guy snoring next to me.

A WiFi iPod wouldn't make me give up my SqueezeBox, and it wouldn't
have changed my decision. Unfortunately, I realized a long time ago,
that I don't often fall into the 80% of people that companies usually
market to.

I've never had the truncated display problem, despite using both
ID3v1.1 and ID3v2.3 tags in all my MP3 files. These include original
MP3 rips, transcoded FLAC rips, and retagged files from other sources.

One reason is probably my preferred tagging tool, the
industrial-strength MP3 Tag Studio:
http://www.magnusbrading.com/mp3ts/

Like most feature rich utilities, MP3TS can seem overwhelming at first
glance, but its capabilities far outdistance the competition. I'm
surprised that it's not better known on this forum. Such an insanely
powerful app really should be the geek's tagger of choice. Try it,
you'll like it.

Oh, back to the original point: Even though most of my library is now
FLAC, SlimServer never truncated the overlong fields when I used MP3
only. And I still have a few MP3 sets (ripped elsewhere, retagged by
me) that prove the point. I suppose a code crawl would also agree if I
wasn't too lazy.

I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from deleting the older v1.1 tags.
But in my usage, MP3TS truncates those as needed while writing the
complete v2.3 tags, and SlimServer is happy to respect the latter. In
general, I believe dual tagging "done right" solves more compatibility
issues than it creates. But as always, your mileage may vary.

[slim] "click wheel" remote?

2006-02-12 Thread sandeen

My audiotron (had) & my ipod (has) a spinny wheel for cycling
through long menus. My ancient Mitsubishi vcr has a spinny
"jog dial" on the remote... could a jog dial / click wheel work
for navigating the squeezebox?

When I navigate via the arrow buttons, I notice that sometimes
the menus are somewhat slow in responding; perhaps that slowness
would just be frustrating with a wheel input. But if it could
work as an interface, it'd be pretty slick.

Any thoughts?

[slim] Another Artwork Problem ?

2006-02-12 Thread catdna

Hi All

I've found an oddity in the Artwork setup of SlimServer :

I noticed that the 'artwork_path' of an album in my database is
(correctly) set to the id of the first 'track_id' of the album.

eg. artwork_path : 1662 in the 'albums' database

However, when I try :
http://slimserver:9000/music/1662/cover.jpg

- I get the standard 'no-artwork' cd image.

However, if I try the second track :
http://slimserver:9000/music/1663/cover.jpg

- then the correct album artwork is displayed(!)

Now, if I go through the slimserver interface and navigate to that
album, it's displaying the correct album cover art.

What I really want to know is, "how does slimserver now which coverart
url to use ?"
I though it was always the first track id for the album (or the
'artwork_path' parameter from the database ?

Or am I missing something here ?

Thanks
Chris

[slim] Re: Slimserver and OS X

2006-02-12 Thread MartinP

Slimserver version 6.1.1 runs fine on 10.2.8 (that's Panther, right? I
can't keep track of these cats). But 6.2.1 and 6.2.2 install, start up,
and then immediately stop. According to Sean (see earlier in this
thread) this is due to a bug that's being fixed. I waited a week or so
before trying the installation again, but the latest nighly shows the
same behavior.

I'm reluctant to upgrade the Mac operating system to 10.3 or 10.4
because I'm using an old beige G3 as the server. I could probably
upgrade using xPoatfacto, but I've read enough horror stories to want
to avoid this unless it's crucial. 6.1.1 is streaming beautifully to my
SB3, with a flawless wireless connection, so I may stay where I am. But
I figure 6.2 must be better in some way! Apparently 6.5 will no longer
support OS 10.2.8, so perhaps I'll be forced to upgrade at that point.

And,
squeezeslave is starving after some minutes playing radioio. Also it
doesn't work with the LastFM plugin. Everytime I change the LastFM
station, I have to restart squeezeslave on my debian slimserver
machine.

But,
I think you are working on all this shortcomings, cause squeezeslave
will make the slimserver into a fantastic music server, even without a
squeezebox. :-)

802.11 is HUGE for the iPOD and pretty meaningless for Squeezebox
competition. I'd love wireless for my iPOD: I have a Dension mount in
my Tacoma where the iPOD always lives (either in the truck, miata, or at
work). To sync it up when I change music or download podcasts (IT
conversations is great), I have to walk out to the garage and grab the
iPOD and bring it to the computer and drop it in the cradle. IF it had
802.11, then whenever I drive into the garage, my iPOD syncs, no more
bringing it to the computer for a meeting of the minds.

The Squeezebox and the iPOD use similar enabling technologies, to
provide the same product, but in different ways for different uses. To
me, they are complimentary. Even the airport express is complimentary,
not really a replacement.

[slim] Missing 1st Track from some Albums ?

2006-02-12 Thread catdna

Hi All

While writing a plugin for Meedio I've been delving a little more into
exactly what tracks I have in my database and I've noticed that several
albums are missing tracks.

It's hard to find a relationship between the missing tracks, but it's
usually the first track of an album (it's only a small percentage of
albums that are missing these tracks though - probably 2-3% of all
albums are missing track 1 / others).

I've done a complete rescan just in case anything funny happened first
time round, and this time *other* albums are missing the tracks and the
original tracks that were missing are now there !

Any ideas on what could be causing this inconsistent behaviour ? / has
this been reported before ?

I've got slimserver running on a mini-itx box and all my music kept on
a linkstation NAS device. Maybe there was some network 'glitch' when
scanning the NAS device ?

Latest (6.2.1) version of SlimServer installed.

Thanks

Chris

I don't see it. A wireless iPod still doesn't do what the SB does,
unless I'm missing something.

What's the tie-in to a decent sound system? I mean, I can connect my
wireless laptop to a pair of powered speakers any old time, and have
access to a heckuva a lot more music of a much better quality.

Besides, I can't stand iTunes, and the proprietary nature of the Apple
formats is a deal-killer for me.

I just don't see what the big attraction is?

I think that we are only going to see more and more integration of the
iPod with home and car audio. There are now lots of people who have
purchased hundreds (if not thousands) of Apple DRM tracks from the
iTunes music store, so what else are they going to play them with?

I think the iPod will continue to evolve into the "jack of all trades
master of none" role while products like the Squeezebox continue to
evolve as audio specialist appliances that offer much better sound
quality and more flexibility.

I guess what I'm really getting at is that there is plenty of room in
the market for both products.

Actually the remote does a great job but it would be nice to see an
update.

Something offered seperately which was backlit and offered direct
access to commonly used functions and plugins (and upcoming Pandora

people would be willing to put some cash out there to acquire a more
functional remote.

Just offer it for sale seperately.

Howdy folks - I am an Apple fan, running my wifi network with apple
computers, owning an airport express and an IPod and an SB3. Why did I
buy the SB3 - easy call, because of the big display, the nice remote
and the possibility to connect to the Internet without the need to have
a computer running.

- My IMacs stream Internet music superior then SB3 (under my DSL
network conditions)
- I do not do FLAC as I am using ITunes to stream music via airtunes to
all the other rooms except the SB3 bedroom.

As an Apple fan, flac is not doing anything for you. So what does it
need to get rid of my SB3.

A Airport express device that has a display and can connect to the
internet without a computer's help.. then.. but only then you can have
my SB3.. An WiFi Ipod is not doing much for me as long as it does not
connect to the internet...

Cheers

A wireless iPod doesn't make a lot of sense - in the same manner that a
portable squeezebox would have very limited usability. If it contained
both internal storage (drive or flash) _and_ wireless capability, then
you might have something.

And if Apple came up with an "iPod" that was akin to the Squeezebox

then yes, this would steal quite a bit of sales from the Squeezebox.
No doubt more due to the huge marketing clout of Apple, and the
momentum of iTunes than anything else.

In any case, you're seeing more and more products from all segments of
the electronics industry aimed at this market, in most cases with
better focus than the Squeezebox. You have cheap consumer mp3/wma
players, audiophile playback systems, and multi-room systems, most of
which are better suited for their particular target audience, either
because of price or features. Squeezebox has a couple things going for
it right now - probably because it does all of those things fairly well.
It's fairly inexpensive, it's passable at doing multi-room (for the
price, anyway) and it's caught a small following in the audiphile
community because of its relatively low cost and ease of being tweaked
to enhance performance.

[slim] Re: Qnap Ts101

2006-02-12 Thread funkstar

ReadyNAS:
Releases are pretty quick from Infrant. They have to compile their own
version for the ReadyNAS so you can't add your own plugins etc. but
requests for them are often quickly added if you read the forums
there.

Transcoding is not possible due to the processor inside the ReadyNAS
being tailored specifically for RAID/NAS IO and is not a general
purpose CPU.

I don't know how plugins will work or what will be available for it. No
idea what transcoding will be like.

There was also a lot of talk about the Qnap TS-401 a few months back,
but there hasn't been much else about this, unlike the TS-101.
Apparently the 401 will be Epia based so can run a full, standard Perl
version of SS along with any plugins you care to add.

Hopefully Paul from Progressive will see this thread on monday and chip
in anything else :)

[slim] Re: Nokia 770 & Slimserver- Any regrets?

2006-02-12 Thread cshaida

to the original question:

I've had my 770 for about two weeks. Like it a lot. But I get 'dual'
use: as a sb3 remote and as a web browser.

web browser - I've been hankering for quite a while for a handheld on
which I could do basic web browsing while wandering around the house or
the office. (I was foolish enough to buy a Dell Axim for this purpose.
Yikes! it doesn't work for this at all--anybody out there want one?)
Nothing too exotic--Amazon, Orbitz, yahoo, slim (and other) forums, and
political blogs (which I spend an hour or so every day reading). Notice
there is VERY limited typing involved above. As such the 770 is great.
I can spend 20-30 minutes 'reading' sites on it much more conveniently
then with a laptop on my lap (awkward, too hot, too big).

sb3 remote - I've got 3 sbs. I love the 770 with Ben's skin as a
remote, wandering around the house turning music on and off in various
locals. An object of much envy at a recent dinner party.

qualifications - I don't use any of the other software. I don't really
need to have a lot of browser windows open at once (usually 2 or 3).
And I don't need to type much for what I'm doing. I did buy a 1 GB
rsmmc card for it and may try it out as an auxillary mp3 player (so I
don't have to carry yet another charger).

I don't own one, and don't want one..

You are stuck with Apples laws on playing your music, and you need to

Let's not forget to mention the SB doesn't require a hard drive in it so
no moving parts, gives you a very readable VF display you can see from
across the room, and plays back more file types. You cannot put Ipods
in RAID affordably. Your storage is limited. You're stuck with just a
couple of formats. The Ipod solution does not seem ideal for mulitple
users either. The *only* solution I see as an actual competitor to
Slimdevices is the Sonos system. Nothing else comes close in
performance and playback features. What would truly be ideal is if the
Sonos and Squeezeboxes played with each other! Of course there's always
the Nokia 770 for a color remote too!

Although some valid points are raised, there is just a heavy tinge of
pessimism in this post...
Sure, some people do experience these problems - you don't have to
search too hard on the forums to find them, but there are easily 100's
(if not 1000's?) to each one of these that just "plug'n'play". I was
one of these, both with my old SB1G & the new SB3 (all wireless, may I
add)

In answer to the OP Q's:
Check out the "plugins" section of the website to see if what you are
looking for is there.
Plugin installation is usually no more painful than downloading the
plugin (.pm file, I think) and plonking it in your plugins directory. A
reboot of the server usually brings the plugin to the attention of the
slimserver.

Have your house CAT5'd, and prepare to use the device wired. Trying to
make it work via wireless might drive you insane. If you are gluten for
punishment and you must use it wireless, take a look at the published
list of squeezebox-tested wireless routers.

Be ready to test the unit carefully, submit bug reports, try beta
versions of firmware and server. Researching issues about the
Squeezebox ahead of time might improve your experience. If the wireless
device in the squeezebox fails or acts weird, be prepared to return the
unit to Slim Devices for a full refund or repair.

Prepare a nice spot for the Squeezebox where you will be able to read
the display, and place the unit away from sources of interference, such
as 2.4GHz cordless phones. Have a good surge protector ready for the
Squeezebox power adaptor.

Re: [slim] Volume Normalizing with SB1?

2006-02-12 Thread Mark Lanctot
I'm not sure if SB1 supports SlimServer 6.2.1's
ReplayGain functionality or not.

If it does, download MP3Gain:
http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/ and *analyze* all
files using the "Track Analysis" button. SlimServer
will then use the written ReplayGain tags to normalize
the volume.

If the SB1 does not use the ReplayGain functionality,
you can use MP3Gain to actually alter the audio data
volume using the "Track Gain" button.

[slim] Volume Normalizing with SB1?

2006-02-12 Thread CrzyMikeB
Hi,
I am using an SB1 in a commercial environment to play demos of CD's that we
sell. I ripped the demo CD's to my hard drive as MP3. Is there anyway to
go back in and normalize the volume, or does the normalizing need be done
when ripping? Since these songs are played as background music over
commercial type ceiling speakers a loss in quality is not an issue. I just
need the volume to be the same on all songs.

Thanks,

This product is expected in the next year. It will work as follows:

You'll have an Airport Express / Airtunes / Airmedia adapter with
digital audio output connected to your stereo system.

The iPod (with its quality color screen) will act as the remote.
Digital music from the iPod will be streamed wirelessly to your stereo
system from anywhere in your home. You'll have access to Apple's music
stations directly from the iPod (to play on the iPod or via your stereo
system). You'll be able to play music purchased from the Apple Music
Store. Usable range of around 100 feet.

This makes the system superior to the Squeezebox in almost every
respect. One area where it will be limited, at least for the near
future, is storage. Many users on this forum prefer to use FLAC and
other lossless formats for maximum possible audio quality. Today's
iPod is available with a maximum of 60Gb storage; next-generation
drives for the iPod are expected to hold 100-120Gb. This is still
short of the capacity necessary to hold large music libraries in FLAC /
lossless format.

[slim] Re: NY times/ Pandora

2006-02-12 Thread cvj

Perhaps a name change is in order on March 1, when the combined
Squeezebox/Pandora product is unveiled?

"Pandora's Box" would be a memorable product name - in which case,
however, some serious marital discord might ensue, viz.

"Left alone with the mysterious casket, Pandora became more and more
inquisitive. Stealthily she drew near and examined it with great
interest, for it was curiously wrought of dark wood, and surmounted by
a delicately carved head, of such fine workmanship that it seemed to
smile and encourage her. Around the box a glittering golden cord was
wound, and fastened on top in an intricate knot. Pandora, who prided
herself specially on her deft fingers, felt sure she could unfasten it,
and reasoning that it would not be indiscreet to untie it if she did not
raise the lid, she set to work. Long she strove, but all in vain. Ever
and anon the laughing voices of Epimetheus and his companions, playing
in the luxuriant shade, were wafted in on the summer breeze. Repeatedly
she heard them call and beseech her to join them; yet she persisted in
her attempt. She was just on the point of giving up in despair, when
suddenly the refractory knot yielded to her fumbling fingers, and the
cord, unrolling, dropped on the floor.

Pandora had repeatedly fancied that sounds like whispers issued from
the box. The noise now seemed to increase, and she breathlessly applied
her ear to the lid to ascertain whether it really proceeded from within.
Imagine, therefore, her surprise when she distinctly heard these words,
uttered in the most pitiful accents: " Pandora, dear Pandora, have pity
upon us ! Free us from this gloomy prison! Open, open, we beseech you!"

Pandora's heart beat so fast and loud, that it seemed for a moment to
drown all other sounds. Should she open the box ? Just then a familiar
step outside made her start guiltily. Epimetheus was coming, and she
knew he would urge her again to come out, and would prevent the
gratification of her curiosity. Precipitately, therefore, she raised
the lid to have one little peep before he came in.

Now, Jupiter had malignantly crammed into this box all the diseases,
sorrows, vices, and crimes that afflict poor humanity; and the box was
no sooner opened, than all these ills flew out, in the guise of horrid
little brown-winged creatures, closely resembling moths. These little
insects fluttered about, alighting, some upon Epimetheus, who had just
entered, and some upon Pandora, pricking and stinging them most
unmercifully. They then flew out through the open door and windows, and
fastened upon the merrymakers without, whose shouts of joy were soon
changed into wails of pain and anguish.

Epimetheus and Pandora had never before experienced the faintest
sensation of pain or anger; but, as soon as these winged evil spirits
had stung them, they began to weep, and, alas ! quarrelled for the
first time in their lives. Epimetheus reproached his wife in bitterest
terms for her thoughtless action;

Ouch,

Agreed. Although I think that for most people--and I'm not looking to start
yet another audiophile debate here--MP3s are capable of providing adequate
sound reproduction for their uses, and I'd be willing to bet that the majority
of people useing their Squeezeboxen are (1) streaming MP3s, and (2) using the
RCA jacks. I think the success of MP3 players attest to the general adequacy of
the format, despite the otherwise valid points people with more discerning ears
may make.

>(2) the ability to choose music with a remote control, using a device
>with a display I could read from the sofa.

Also agreed.

What would probably compete with the squeezebox market would be an iPod you
could dock, see from across the room, and control remotely.

I think a WiFi iPod could compete too, if it can streem from the iPod to a
stereo and you could just look at the display in your hand, though I tend to
think that battery life would be severly limited in this mode of use.

Re: [slim] Potential Squeezebox killer? iTunes fans might think so...

2006-02-12 Thread Mark Lanctot
Interesting, but does it offer the same sound
quality? No.

Digital audio outputs? No.

Does it have the same large, bright, legible
screen? No. Not compared to a Squeezebox screen
anyway.

Does it have a remote control? No.

Can it be controlled over your network? No.

Is the software as powerful or as flexible?
People seem to like it, but it seems quite
limiting. It likes doing things "its way". 3rd
party plugins? Forget about it! You do what
Apple allows you to do.

Slim Devices would be well advised to stay away
from Apple's market. They have demolished
competitors much larger than Slim. However, Slim
is in a niche that Apple won't ever touch: an
audiophile device developed around open-source
software. Customers are encouraged to contribute
to the device and its software. Counter this with
Apple's "do it our way" concept.

Perhaps Slim might even become a refuge for those
iPod users disenfranchised with the proprietary
"DRM in everything" Apple paradigm. Well, it
*could* happen. :-)

Apple developing an iPod-like "base station" could
address several of these limitations, but when it
comes to flexibility and customer involvement Slim
can always beat them.

Yeah I think that their idea is to be able to allow you to purchase
music/video on iTunes no matter what WiFi network you are on. I just
see a plethora of accessories coming out that will allow you to use the
iPod as a streaming music box ala/Squeezebox in a similar capacity.

To me, the only attraction would be iTunes/DRM stuff - but not nearly
enough to take away from the elegance of the Sqeezebox (10-foot
display, full function remote, etc).

Just playing devil's advocate as the idea has some merrits...

First have a look at
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?BeginnersGuide and its associated
pages. You might get some useful pointers there.

Specifically on plugins start at
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SlimServerPlugins

Then just get playing!

If you get stuck there's a special forum where you can ask any question
you like without having to worry about apologising for being a Newbie...
http://forums.slimdevices.com/forumdisplay.php?f=11

Then don't forget to enjoy the music!

Re: [slim] Re: In anticipation of my new SQUEEZEBOX - what should I do?

2006-02-12 Thread Mark Lanctot
Take a *good* look at your tags using a tagger
program - I'm partial to Mp3tag. Trust me, you
will find inconsistencies and errors.

You should be using ID3v2 tags if any field will
be longer than 30 characters. At the very least,
you should have artist-title tags. Keeping the
album field blank will work OK but leads to a few
glitches in how SlimServer will list things.

Also take a look at your genres. The Random Mix
plugin can base selections on genres. Be
consistent and give it enough variety so you can
differentiate the music according to your tastes.
Keep in mind if the genres were pulled off a
public server like freedb, you may not agree with
them.

In the future you may want to look into ripping in
FLAC. The Squeezebox is high fidelity enough that
you will notice the difference on decent speakers.
However, 160-192 kbps encoded using LAME is
pretty good.

[slim] Re: Qnap Ts101

2006-02-12 Thread Robster

I got fed up of waiting so have brought a small pc case, 250gb hard
drive, XP Pro, 512mb, 1.8ghz processor, no cd drive. Doing things this
way I'll have no issues waiting for Slimserver upgrades or installing
any plug-ins.
I have it plugged into the router in the spare room and then wireless
to SB3 in the lounge. I have another pc on the network again with 250gb
which I use to back-up my music. CD's are imported on this then
transferred over the network.

I don't normally leave the (server) on 24/7 as it boots up in under 20
secs via the remote. The only issues are getting it to turn off when
not in use, not such a hardship though.

Best thing is I've procured a Toshiba Tablet laptop that I use to
control everything remotely, works like a dream using the pen/stylus on
screen. I can also download tunes, edit, then transfer them to the
other pc's all from the couch.

I was thinking of the Nokia 770 or a PDA but the limitations of both
put me off, my solution although bigger was the way to go, even the
girlfriend is impressed.

- Meh - it could cause some defection but not kill Slim entirely...

Well, speaking personally - the two main reasons I went for Squeezeboxen
were (1) really good quality sound into my audio system and (2) the
ability to choose music with a remote control, using a device with a
display I could read from the sofa.

Wifi enabling an iPod wouldn't change that.

I think they already tried this with the AirPort? Didn't seem to do
much. Although I figured having 5,000 songs on an ipod would be
enough. What are they trying to get more of? It's not like their
sales are sagging, and then the ipond becomes fairly useless outside
your home, because you know they won't allow you to just connect to
another persons' home network any play your songs through their

if you rip songs in iTunes, it adds 'replay gain' tags to the songs to
note the maximum volume and uses that in playback. (ie, some music it
will decide "whoever masted the CD was deaf, I'll turn it down some".)

I don't believe WinAMP pays attention to those tags.

(Slimserver can if you tell it to.)

[slim] Re: Why does the volume level change?

2006-02-12 Thread Mark Lanctot

Computer programs use fairly arbitrary volume levels. Most go through
the Windows Mixer, which makes their volumes fairly even, but some do
not, and some have their own volume controls (Quicktime, Windows Media
Player, Winamp, foobar2000).

What it all means is that there's no real standard and each program can
determine their own volume.

BTW your sound card is not "underpowered", it's your computer speakers
that do the actual amplification.

Yet another reason to move sound processing to a real audio component
like the Squeezebox.

Well the **first** thing you should start doing is begin ripping your CD
collection to a lossless format such as FLAC (or if you don't care about
audio quality, some other lossy format) using Exact Audio Copy and an
appropriate compression codec.

That is, of course, if you have a CD collection to rip. If you already
have all of your media on your hard drive then congrats!

[slim] Re: Linux / iTunes / Mac using central library

2006-02-12 Thread Fred

You can do a link using ln from ~/Music/iTunes to wherever you want the
file to be on your server. It works. You can even have multiple users
access the iTunes library (in sequence) if you have ACL set right on
the server (or if both users access the server using a third
username).

What you must make sure however is that the song path from iTunes and
from SlimServer are the same. iTunes write the full path name of songs
in the XML file and this is what SlimServer reads, so you basically get
an empty lib if they don't match.

Right, the problems is 99% likely that the OP has ID3v1 tags.
The solution is simple, use ID3V2 or V3 tags.
Just remember to remove the ID3v1 tags to keep from confusing things.
