My own feeling is that it does no harm to have material repeated. I
concentrated on problems, so there is stuff that is explained in more
detail on your page.

[slim] waterproof remote control

2006-03-02 Thread Builder Brad

The Squeezebox is such a great piece of kit!

now I have most of my Cd collection ripped and have replaced the Cd in
my main system i am now looking at additional units around the house.

I am looking for a waterproof remote control for the SB2 to use in a
hot tub. I would be happy to either mod the existing remote, or buy a
programmable/universal one.

does anyone have any ideas

That sounds strange. Is it a recurring problem ? If so, does the
Playlists->Refresh menu item sort it ? Which version of SS are you

Strange.. Just checked Moose.zip and it does contain 0.25.. Are you
using a proxy server or anything ? Might be worth clearing your internet
temporary files if using IE ? Maybe if you do a Save As and call it
something other than Moose.zip, then extract it ? I could email it if
you're still having problems ?

[slim] Re: How far will the wireless signal carry?

2006-03-02 Thread scott_m

I bought a Hawking technology high-gain directional antenna with the
intention of replacing the antenna on my wireless router. It turns out
the router didn't have a removable antenna, so I ended up putting it on
my Squeeze box 2 - which does have a removable antenna. The result is
that I stream (with signal strength around 60%) approx. 600 ft from one
side of our 10 acre property to the other. In our case, we live at the
back of our nursery property, while our computer and dsl connection are
at the front of the property. SB2 lets me listen to music and stream
internet across the field. Pretty neat trick.

Scott.

[slim] Defaulting to the clock when SlimServer shuts down

2006-03-02 Thread benthos

Hi all,

I am using an SB3 with a laptop computer that I turn off regularly - I
try to be conservative in my power usage. Whenever I shut off the
computer, my SB3's screen goes blank. I'm wondering if there's any way
to get the SB3 to automatically go into "clock" mode whenever it can't
connect to the SlimServer.

I like the clock display, and since I haven't got any other clocks in
my living room, it would be a nice option. I realize that I could get
the clock to show by connecting to the Squeezenetwork, but I never
think to do this (I am lazy), and think it would be a great benefit if
the SB3 just somehow defaulted to clock mode of its own volition. I
take it that it has to get the time from either the SlimServer or
Squeezenetwork, and that it can't just store the time on its own,
correct?

Chris (who is enjoying the new Pandora option)

2006-03-02 Thread bklaas

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19369

Question: Do you have a 770?

- Got it
- Want it
- Need it
- Forget it

The four control boxes at the bottom--

upper left, player controls (play, pause, stop, prev, next)
lower left, repeat controls (none, repeat track, repeat playlist)
upper right, volume controls (mute, incremental bars from low to max)
lower right, shuffle controls (none, shuffle track, shuffle album)

the looping arrows icon is the label for the repeat controls
the two arrows crossing over each other icon is the label for the
shuffle controls
neither are clickable

Not putting captions under the icons was a design decision to keep the
interface looking clean and to make good use of the 800x480 nokia
screen.

hope that cleared that up...maybe I'll experiment with some text on
those buttons, but I think I like it how it is...

cheers,
#!/ben

[slim] iPod Hi-Fi Box + Squeezebox + Pandora Box = Joy!

2006-03-02 Thread walterrho

I received an iPod Hi-Fi Box today along with another SB3, in black.
Listening to "The Girl From Ipanema Radio" on Pandora Radio. What an
experience!

The Squeezebox and Hi-Fi first of all, look fantastic together. Same
frontal silhouette, scaled up. Same curves. No visible buttons or knobs
on either. The Hi-Fi has capacitance-sensitive volume spots.

Square S/PDIF to mini-plug optical connection.

The sound is extremely clear, with a tight acoustic suspension sound
(though it is a ported design). Intimate imaging, probably due to the
unusual experience of high quality drivers playing so close together.
Can play loudly yet cleanly.

When you add Pandora Radio to the mix, I can't imagine a simpler, more
uncluttered, and mindless way to enjoy great music.

I don't have 6 D-cells on hand, but I have a set of 11,000 mAH NiMH's
on order. I've read that the maximum volume gets limited under DC
power, but to my ears there is plenty of reserve. This thing could rock
in a vacation house.

I think this combo is succinct, elegant, and great!

[slim] Re: How far will the wireless signal carry?

2006-03-02 Thread Michaelwagner

I've gotten 802.11b to go most of 200 feet inside my factory, but the
last 50 feet or so were at low signal strength. That was a standard
Linksys WAP (but not with the supplied antenna - I was using the longer
ones you can buy from Linksys) and a laptop card with no antenna.

Through 1 concrete wall and open air for the rest (although with plenty
of heavy metal machinery in the intervening space).

If you have one particular place you want to reach in your woods (and
it sounds like you do), google for cantenna
(http://tinyurl.com/kwuak) and check out the first half a dozen
listings for the original cantenna and a number of cheap (under $10)
DIY alternatives. These are all basically static directional antennas.

Or check out the Belkin Pre-N wireless - these are essentially antenna
arrays that are dynamically set to the right direction for your needs.

Be aware that the last is based on a pre-release version of 802.11N
(hence the name). The spec isn't finalized yet, and may change in final
form, so you *may* wind up with something different from the final
standard.

2006-03-02 Thread Millwood

Once you have an IP address for the SB, you should try to ping it from
your server machine if things don't work. If you can't, the SB is not
really on the network.

Sadly, the firmware is still not solid, so the SB can be on for a while
and then drop off.

The computer requirements are considerably lessened if it doesn't have
to run a server. Also, you'll see see much less of a performance
difference within the music system itself due to running on this or
that hardware or operating system. Even more so with an NAS, where you
don't have to worry about performance and whether the server could even
run on the device due to Perl or other software compatibility issues.

That's the road they've chosen. It works well for me and the more
geekly of consumers, but it's not likely to be a successful mass-market
approach.

The coworker in question is a full-time software developer and
part-time network administrator. So the geek appeal of the Squeezebox
obviously has it limits when someone just wants to listen to music in
their home.

2006-03-02 Thread stokessd

The lack of a server does strike me as a very useful thing for a lot of
consumers, but this thing still needs a computer, so what's the
difference?

Maybe this is covered somewhere else, but it seems to me that the
squeezebox is really half a product. I love what it is and what it can
do, but it strikes me that for many consumers, the lack of a simple plug
and play server box is a serious hurdle.

Does slim have plans to market a simple NAS box or similar to
compliment the squeezebox? It strikes me as a natural. I'd love to
see something like the Kurobox (with more processing juice). It could
be an embedded linux box with slimserver built in, and a sizable hard
drive (or a pair). With samba running, it would be super easy for the
average joe to add music etc. It could be totally turn-key for the
average user and configurable for the advanced guy.

Hi Danco

Thanks for starting this. I've popped in and made a few minor changes
(a few typos and a couple of extra suggestions). I'm sure there's room
for a lot more, though.

I looked at pulling out the stuff to do with Wireless from the

page.

How do you think we ought to work this?

Doesn't the Treo have any sort of utility to list its MAC address? Like
System Settings or something?

I'm sure there are other applications to determine MAC addresses, but
one that works for me is 'AirSnare'
(http://home.comcast.net/~jay.deboer/airsnare/). Although it's
intended to identify wireless intruders, it will list all MAC addresses
on your network. Connect your Treo to your home network and since you
can determine the MAC address of your router, your modem, all your
computers and all your Squeezeboxes you can determine the Treo's MAC
address by process of elimination.

Sorry, no idea regarding your other questions.

I installed slimserver on my WinXP laptop and figured out at least part
of the issue--

Server Settings->Security->CSRF Protection

you need to set this to none or the ajax requests will fail. That CSRF
thing has bit me so many times...I'd long since set that to none on my

2006-03-02 Thread JSonnabend

Well, I found the problem. I should have mentioned that I populate the
SQLite DB myself from an Access DB. I had "filled in" all the fields I
thought were important.

Two fields in the Tracks table I had not included were "FS" and "Sec"
(or is it "Secs"?). Apparently, these fields need to be non-zero to
get Slim to fire the tracks. I now use "1000" as a value for these
fields, and all seems to work.

I'm not sure why Slim crapped out on me after working as it was, but I
did do a lot of futzing in recent days, and so that may have killed
something.

Thanks for the reply.

the 'progress bar is the horizontal bar below the album art and above

far right. The track number shown as 'playing' is behind by one,

track 3 (as shown correctly on the sb display AND correctly on the

forget the date in the about section. It was a mistake to ever put that
there, because I'll never remember to update it. In fact, I just
removed it...

There's nothing linux-specific about any of this either...

What you should see, if it works, is a huge improvement in the UI on
the 'now playing' page. This is actually more dramatic on a regular PC
than on a 770, but it's an improvement either place.

So, as a litmus test, can you tell me if the progress bar is light
blue? If it is, you have the new code.

cheers,

I downloaded slimserver 6.5b1 (SlimServer v2006-03-02.exe) this morning

terms of getting them installed? Are they only in Linux? Or is there
some surefire way to confirm that I do or do not have them installed
(for instance on the skin About page the text reads "This skin was

(also, at the bottom of the 'server' page it reads "SlimServer Version:

If your Palm Treo connects to your wireless (or wired) network wth a
dynamically assigned IP address - It must have a MAC address try an
'arp' from a windows command prompt - i.e "arp 'treo ip no ' -a " this
sould resolve the ip to mac address.
My squeezebox gives this result :

Interface: 192.168.2.6 --- 0x2
Internet Address Physical Address Type
192.168.2.7 00-04-20-06-31-4a dynamic

Hope this helps ...

Thanks. I'm running 6.2.2 (Linux) from a few weeks ago. Is the fix in
the newer 6.2.2, or would I have to go to 6.5b?

I just tried installing the 6.5b (v2006-03-02 nightly) build on the
latest Vista beta (build 5308). It got to the end of the install then
gave an error message about not being able to copy the perl58.dll file.
I went ahead and installed the ActiveState Perl package then copied the
perl58.dll file into the SlimServer directory (both top-level and the
server/bin/MSWin32-x86-multi-thread directory). The taskbar icon comes
up and says it's running, but when I try to bring up the browser window
I get a 'can not establish connection' error. Naturally, I thought it
was the built-in firewall so I shut it down entirely. Still no go.

Will keep trying but if anyone has any tips, would appreciate it.

Regular player preferences are keyed by MAC, because as you rightly
point out, IPs can change quite frequently. Where the MAC is
unavailable (because it's on a routed network) I guess it has no choice
but to use IP. I'm not really sure how you'd handle identifying a player
when the MAC is unknown and the IP is dynamic.

No, we're all too busy playing with our 770s with your great skin :)

In all seriousness, it looks fine here. I've been using it on and off

On a separate topic, would it be a pain to increase the size of the

There was a bug introduced in some versions of the server whereby the
plugin would only choose from tracks that had already been played. This
might be the problem, and upgrading to a more recent version might fix it.

I had a similar problem with slimserver not seeing the Genre in some mp3
files, although it did find other tags, and found the Genre from all other
mp3s. This was from a recent 6.5 beta; I dont think I saw the problem in 6.2,
but I cant be sure.

Ive recently fixed this by using the 'id3v2' program to copy v1 tags as v2 in
the affected files.

I hope this helps,

[slim] Moose 0.25 now up

2006-03-02 Thread Dr Lovegrove
Just uploaded a new version of my windows front-end Moose to the usual
place: http://www.rusticrhino.com/drlovegrove

It's been a month, so quite a few tweaks and changes:

* Now supports MySQL databases. Works much better than the SQLite
support, but obviously you need to have MySQL'd your slimserver for it
to work (well worth it !)

* I've moved Moose from .Net 1.1 to .Net 2.0.. Feels much quicker and
internally things are a bit nicer too..

* Re-jigged the NowPlaying UI again - added a menubar, removed some
buttons, tidied up the remaining buttons, added bitmaps, etc.. Oh, and
cover-art now resizes as you resize the window.

* Added an Amazon lookup feature which attempts to find the currently
playing album. It's a bit work in progress, but seems to work quite
well.

* Added SoftSqueeze integration so you can fire up SoftSqueeze without
hunting about on the website.

* Fixed some directory scanning problems and a few other bits and pieces.

Enjoy,

[slim] Re: Enhancement requests for Classical or complex music collections

2006-03-02 Thread ceejay

Tom

Agreed that the SHUFFLEMODE idea is a bit clumsy. WORK is better, as
you say you could have an assumption that WORK=TRACK if absent.

You'd still have to modify the code that creates the database and
populates it during the scanning process (which would be a good time to
make the WORK=TRACK assignment). This means that a standalone plugin
would not be enough, using this approach.

Whereas using a genre value would not require any change to the
database or scanning process, so could definitely be done as a plugin
(or amendment to an existing one, more likely).

Also agreed that simply using the CLASSICAL genre would not always
work, I think a userdefinable Genre would be better - I meant that
having this facility would at least open the option up for someone to
use CLASSICAL as a quick fix.

I'm sufficiently curious that I might even have a look myself...

2006-03-02 Thread braaamer

Hi Anton,

I'll definitely try out your script. I am considering getting a
Squeezebox 3 as I think it is a cool device with great sound - so they
say.

While one can of course access SlimServer through the remote on the
Squeezebox, I think in certain situations it is easier to select the
music that is streamed to the box from the computer (Mac in my case).
However, I do not like the web interface of SlimServer too much, hence,
I was looking for a way to use the iTunes front end with its handy music
searching, browsing and playlist mgmt features to control what is being
streamed from SlimServer to the Squeezebox.

Am I understanding correct, that your script is exactly solving my
problem?

Thanks and cheers,

The web browser page shows, in the upper right corner, a drop-down list

I would also think this would be a problem for anyone traveling unless

[slim] Re: Enhancement requests for Classical or complex music collections

2006-03-02 Thread tom permutt

Nearly. I think there is an unnecessary and undesirable extra layer of
indirection in the scheme Ceejay suggests. If there is going to be an
extra tag, it should just be WORK, rather than an indicator of whether
WORK=ALBUM or WORK=SONG. (That requires you to respect the ALBUM=WORK
convention. But if you are going to the trouble of adding an extra tag
anyway, you don't need to.) For ordinary songs, either you could set
WORK to the same value as TITLE in ripping; or it could just be a
convention that if WORK is missing, it means the work is the song.

As I said, I don't think major surgery on SlimServer itself is needed.
Really I'd just like a plug-in, or even a standalone program, that makes
a random list of WORKs. But, no, probably not enough to write it, nor,
therefore, enough to lobby hard for someone else to write it.

The slight trouble with using GENRE=CLASSICAL as the indicator is that
there are some discs that you would probably call CLASSICAL, tag as a
single ALBUM, and yet _not_ want handled as single WORKs: e.g., 10
tenor arias in a row (by Gigli, of course).

You're certainly right that repeating can be random, and that what Neil
asked for in his follow-up post is non-random, or random without
replacement. But the symptoms he described in his original post sound
truly non-random.

I have seen similar issues, although only at the artist or album level,
not the track level. The frequency with which a given artist or album is
repeated in the same playlist, especially near each other in the same
playlist, seems too high to be random. But it's pretty easy to test
formally, and one of these days I'll get around to it.

I like this clock, but I need to get around the installer because my
computer won't let me install. Is there some way to manually copy the
needed files and install them yourself?

[slim] Re: Apple lossless on ubuntu linux server

2006-03-02 Thread jsissom

Thank you for your reply. I have good news and bad news.

I installed alac and after a few guesses at what to put in convert.conf
got it working with lots of dropouts. I figured that was because I was
sending a WAV file on the wireless network.

So I tried to make it convert to flac before sending. I changed
convert.conf like this:

Code:

  mov flc squeezebox *
  [alac] $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0 -

  mov flc squeezebox2 *
  [alac] $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0 -

This doesn't seem to work. But if I do this on the command line of my
server:

alac file.m4a | flac -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0 - >
file.flac

file.flac will play fine on my squeezebox.

Can you tell me what I did wrong with my convert.conf file?

Thanks
Jay

Here's a nice little clock program which you can format in a variety of
ways...

[slim] Re: How far will the wireless signal carry?

... I have a NetGear antenna attached to my SB2 (which is probably not
necessary for the range I'm using, but at one time it solved some
problems for me) and it works a treat. I think the SB3 only has
internal antennas though, so it's probably not as simple with the newer
hardware :(

Incidentally the antenna is only attached to the SB2 because I've had
two wireless bridges fail on me in the past year; so the SB has stepped
up to being a bridge as well as a music player - I can't thank
SlimDevices enough for throwing this extra feature in!

What do I need to do? Where can I ftp the song and the log?

Create a bug report on bugs.slimdevices.com, add the file and an exact
description of what's happening, a copy of the logfile etc.
