[slim] Latest Beta

2006-03-09 Thread Richard Scales

Hello all,

Reading all the threads has inspired me to upgrade
from 6.2.1 to 6.2.2 though I cannot seem to find install files for Windows
environment.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

6.2.1 does appear to work flawlessly for me
so why upgrade I wonder? Just because I can I suppose!

Kind regards

Richard Scales

[slim] Re: Help! Where are my music files?

2006-03-09 Thread Khuli

Have you tried doing a search for all files called *.flac ?

It's possible (though bizarre) that they might have been saved as
hidden or system files, in which case the default setting for Windows
Explorer won't show them - you'll need to change this in the Folder
Options setting.

As you say, it looks like they are there somewhere!

Forcing your new router to use 802.11b will fix that - not what you

Yes, I think you are right!
The SB3 crashes when the laptop 802.11b get connected to the network.
Otherwise it works normally.
The router have no options to work only 802.11b. The solution should be
to make the laptop work on 802.11g or turn off its wireless.

Thanks!

[slim] Best way to use both SB2 and sound card?

2006-03-09 Thread vdorta

My SB2 is wired close to my home computer/audio server in the bedroom
and I can easily connect the SB2 to the main amplifier or to my
headphone amplifier as needed. When I move I will install the SB2 and
my main audio system in the living room, running wireless from the

my headamp for headphone listening to internet stations and general

Yes.

or if I connect this to my Linksys Wireless Hub using one its Ethernet

It would work, but because it's wired to the access point, not as
wireless.

It must be wired to either:

- a wired router
- a wired port on a wireless router
- a wired switch
- a wired hub
- a wireless access point/bridge (which offers a wired connection to a
wireless network)
- directly to a PC using a crossover cable. The PC will have to have a
second network card to access the Internet.

[slim] Re: Best way to use both SB2 and sound card?

2006-03-09 Thread Mark Lanctot

You don't have to switch, both work independently of each other. Your
soundcard gets its source files from any playback application like
foobar or Winamp. Your SB2 gets its source files from SlimServer.

At first I thought you meant you wanted to synchronize the two. But
that wouldn't make much sense - headphones on the computer while you're
there and stereo audio in your living room? If you did want to do this,
you could either use 'Softsqueeze'
or 'squeezeslave'
and synch them to the SB2. squeezeslave will probably synch better than
Softsqueeze, but there's no GUI.

You can, of course, play SlimServer-streamed files in a streaming audio
player like foobar or Winamp but these programs will have a significant
buffering delay, making synch impossible.

I've been also looking at using a mini for my music server to replace
my current aging, noisy and large server. I found several options
for external storage that match the foot print of the mini. The one
I liked best was the miniStack from newertechnology which can be
found at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ministack/. From the reviews
that I read the fan in it is virtually silent and it's firewire based
so they can be daisy chained to add more if the 500GB storage limit
per device isn't enough.

[slim] Re: Moose 0.25 now up

2006-03-09 Thread Mark Lanctot

So I decided to drink the Kool-Aid and tried Moose.

I guess the thing that was holding me back was .NET. Last time I
installed it, it was pretty obnoxious, adding a user, lengthening
boot-up time, etc. So I armed myself with a complete system and
registry backup and found relevant web pages for automatic logon.

.NET 2.0 is a huge improvement. No impact on boot-up times and no
annoying 'ASP .NET' user.

And Moose? Wow! What a cool app! Fast, efficient, clean, uncluttered
UI, bug-free. Up and running in two minutes flat. At first I thought
seeing as I still have to run SlimServer, why try Moose? but I
realize that Firefox with the SlimServer interface loaded takes up 23
MB, Moose takes up 10 MB - so SS + Moose is lighter.

Rescan is FAST! 1900 tracks in 2 seconds! Whoa! I thought I missed
something and rescanned again, which barely blinked up on the screen.

I have a few minor niggles:

1. Stop does not work. Pause does, but pressing the Stop button on
the bottom right has no effect.

2. Changing players is not as intuitive or simple as other operations.
I guess this has to be done by the radio button in preferences?
Personally I'd prefer a simple button somewhere in the main UI.
Something that would call up a drop-down list.

3. I couldn't get the external tagger to work (Mp3tag). It errored
out with a German dialog. I've seen this issue mentioned before, I
just have to look for the solution.

4. It waits a fairly long time for the server response when starting
up. 10-15 seconds. No big deal, but I thought there was a problem
when I first started it.

I haven't experienced any problems others have experienced like
flickering when dragging or excessive processor usage.

Dr Lovegrove, thank you so much for this fantastic app!

2006-03-09 Thread Mark Lanctot

Ah...Moose seems to work fine with playlists SlimServer has generated,
but when I try to get Moose to generate a playlist on its own,
problems.

It seems that Moose has not picked up any tags. No Artist or Album
tags. They are all labelled Artist My Documents, Album My Music.
All songs are length 0 and nothing will play.

I guess this is due to the flat directory structure I'm using. I have
never seen the need for multiple directories and I have everything in
one directory. This has never caused problems for SlimServer so I
haven't thought twice about it. But I guess it's what Moose relies on
to identify Artist - Album.

Oh well. It's way too late for me to change now and I don't expect
Moose to be changed for something one foolish user has done.

I still like the program though.

Although the Mini only came with 80GB, this has been OK for the short
term and I'm just starting to look at options. Because I'm a curious
sort, I dismantled my Mini to change the RAM and could see that a disk
upgrade wasn't going to be too tricky. You could therefore look at an
internal upgrade - the cheapest and neatest option. If this isn't your
idea of fun, then an external drive would be even easier you'd be able

Sorry, I'm stumped. I'm on a similar (slightly later perhaps) build...
SlimServer Version: 6.2.2 - 5549 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252 ... and I
can't reproduce your problem. I go Browse Albums - A Compilation
Album - track listing in the browser, they come up in the right
order.

Can I suggest having a REALLY good look at your tags? Use Mp3tag to
check to see if you have ID3 tags as well as Vorbis comments, perhaps?
I think that can confuse slimserver...

If that doesn't show something up, have a look in the database itself
(eg with the SQLite browser), and/or turn debug on while you completely
rescan your library (you might want to set up a test library with just
a handful of albums in - make sure you have some normal as well as
compilations in there or you'll trigger another error).

Well since you did not say what bandwidth the server had, I had no
other assumption to work with. I would hazard to guess MOST slim users
do not colo their slimserver at a datacenter with a nice fat pipe.

Do you mind me asking why you do that? Does your slimserver function a

I found several options for external storage that match the foot print

read the fan in it is virtually silent and it's firewire based so they
can be daisy chained to add more if the 500GB storage limit per device
 isn't enough.

I have a Lacie drive that is just like the ministack - also firewire.
Super fast, super quiet, and very large. My music collection lives on
this drive and all my peripherals plug into it as well. Makes a great
slimserver machine.

No business need. The server serves a number of purposes in addition
to slimserver including; DNS, email, http, VPN, PBX, silcnet, file
server, persistent VNC and 'screen' contexts, etc, etc. But all of
these are personal things, not business-related. I co-located the
server because none of these things would really work well if I tried
to run them from home.

As I mentioned, FLAC files play just fine even with the server being
remote, so there was no real drawback and many advantages to this
setup.

[slim] Power over Ethernet

2006-03-09 Thread squiffy

To the Squeezebox hardware team...

Any plans to implement a power over ethernet variant of the
squeezebox?

If yes, what kind of time frame are we looking at...unless I don't
understand the technology properly, it doesn't look like I can just
take out a soldering iron and go to town to enable it.

However, as a feature, it would be very handy to have, such that you
could place the device anywhere on a CAT5/5e network no other wires
would be necessary.

It's probably just rather low on their priority queue. I'd imagine they
aim to fix the problems without reasonable workarounds first.

WPA/TKIP is a reasonably secure and practical option for the VAST
majority of their customers. While it's true that WPA may have been a
design compromise, it's a rather good one. And if tools do emerge that
enable Joe Sixpack to hack WPA, you can bet Slim will place more
emphasis on a timely fix.

I'm genuinely curious, why are you chomping so hard for AES? Is your
Squeezebox on a business essential network? If so, it might be a good
idea to move it to a dedicated wireless segment.

For what it's worth, Slim is not notably behind the curve with 802.11i.
The vast majority of SOHO WLANs are still using WEP. In due time, I'm
sure they will have it working.

[slim] Remote connection causes playback of only the first 5 seconds of songs

2006-03-09 Thread coldslabs

When I connect to my slimserver using SSH from work (with softsqueeze OR
foobar2000 pointed at /stream.mp3 through a tunnel) only the first 5
seconds of each song plays before skipping to the next song in the
playlist. I've tried bitrate limiting at 64kps with no change in the
behavior. Does this just indicate I don't have enough bandwidth, or
could it be something else? I don't have the problem at home.

I found one post a couple of weeks ago (with no responses) that had the
same problem, but I'm unable to find it again. The symptoms are similar
to this problem, but I have no alarms set:

Oh, the original question about using SSH tunnels was from another
poster. A responder suggested solving the problem with a VPN, so I
offered my configuration as a working example of slimservice over VPN
from a far-away slimserver.

I've accessed my slimserver from various places; work, parents' house,
friends' houses, even over Verizon's EVDO network and was able to use
uncompressed FLAC in all cases except EVDO (where I had to turn the
bitrate down to =128 kbps). Slimserver uses http to stream music
data, which is nice because it's relatively low overhead.

I agree with your point though, that you do need a decent broadband
connection for this to work without bitrate limiting.

Since the SB doesn't support ssh directly, an ssh tunnel would require
a laptop, which is apparently vacation contraband for the original
poster...

[slim] Re: Wireless network fails after half hour playing FLACs

2006-03-09 Thread eCo

I scanned all the messages, but don't think anyone has mentioned heat
might be the culprit. I know some folk have said that has been an
issue with their particular router, but don't know about the Belkin. A
good place to check would be the forums at http://www.dlsreports.com in
their hardware forums.

If it is heat, perhaps you can position the router so it can exchange
heat more efficiently...e.g. keep it out of any enclosures or position
it so it stands up vertically instead of horizontal.

If there's not much opportunity for better cooling and heat is the
issue, then you prolly need a new router.

Good luck,
eCo

[slim] Album Artist versus Artist behavior

2006-03-09 Thread Jon

I have a number of albums where the Album Artist is different from the
Artist. For example, Prince's Graffiti Bridge has a couple of songs
where the Artist is The Time, while the Album Artist is Prince. I
would like for Slimserver to not show these artists when browsing by
artist; I'd rather just have it list them all under Prince. Is this
possible (other than by changing the Artist name from The Time to
Prince)?

My files are in WMA lossless format, in case that makes a difference (I
thought I remember reading that there is a bug in SlimServer when
dealing with the Album Artist tag for WMA files)?
