[slim] how to play by track number during 'browse music folder'
The title pretty much says it all. I use 'browse music folder' almost exclusively because I have organized my music collection by directories that make sense to me. When using 'browse music folder', the tracks are added to the playlist alphabetically rather than by track number. Is there any way to change this behavior? I would second this view. While I have had a few teething problems with my SB, I would attribute all of them to wireless networking. A combination of the physics of 2.4GHz and an enormous variation in performance between routers seems to be at the root of all evil. When I think of the number of routers I went through trying to get Skype to work reliably from my laptop via the wireless network (I gave up and only ever Skype now from the PC upstairs), I'm actually surprised that only one router changeover was required for the SB to be up & running reasonably well. So, if anyone wants faultless performance from their SB, I think that the only surefire solution is a wired network, but that's not the fault of the SB! Sean. P.S. Like I said did not have to do this in the past, but think maybe it'll allow the SB2 to be recognized. [slim] Re: Slimserver on Evesham mini-pc
I looked at this option since I'm running out of patience with the Q-NAP NAS and I would prefer an open PC-based solution to host SlimServer. The issue is that they are tight on space inside and only take 2.5" inch drives so you are limited by capacity. They are not unique to Evesham - they are made in Taiwan and distributed to a variety of outlets. I spoke to another supplier who told me it would be impossible to fit a larger 3.5" drive, so that means you are limited to 100Gb or so. Personally, I'm moving towards ReadyNAS NV as the best solution (not PC, I know). It would be good to have a micro PC, no CD ROM, no legacy ports, no audio, just a disk, a network connection and USB. -- Mark Norton Mark Norton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4722 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22179 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Slimserver on Evesham mini-pc
OK. Its two weeks later and I have a functioning AOpen mini-pc up and running WinXP. The AOpen RMA folks were nice enough. I guess it was about two weeks turn around time to get the machine back with a new mobo. Indeed, the fan control on the old motherboard must have been bad. With the new motherboard, the fan runs constantly (and audibly) once the machine is up to operating temp. I just set up another mac mini for a friends mother this past weekend. The AOpen mini pc seems like a bit of a disappointment in comparison. Yes, I could put it together for less $$ than the mac mini, but when I build a PC, I expect to spend less AND make a better machine. This one isnt better than the mac mini. I suppose that this machine might be appropriate for someone who wanted a semi-stylish case running linux and slimserver headless. Unfortunately, with this machine you do get constant, audible fan noise. So Im not sure youd want the semi-stylish case sitting next to your stereo. And if you put the machine in a closet and out of ear-shot, whats the point of that semi-stylish case? About the only real benefit of the AOpen mini-pc that I can see is the low power consumption. For some folks, I can imagine that that is a real selling point. This machine will end up as a present to some needy friend who doesnt have a computer. I dont think Ill bother to set up Fedora on it or install slimserver. -- gharris999 gharris999's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=115 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22179 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The #PIPE# essentially invokes a unix like pipe using the socketwrapper app and Windows Named pipes. Your use for AAC/ALAC should work but a number of 3rd party antivirus and firewall (e.g. zonealarm, McAfee) can interfere with socketwrapper. The symptoms of this problem is that everything seems to run but there is no sound. I don't have any trouble with the icons (anyone else?). Try a ctrl-reload and/or a shift-reload on your browser to force a non-cached refresh. You are seeing text there because that's the alt attribute for the img tag, so in situations where the browser isn't retrieving the image data, you don't get a broken image icon. I'd rather hear that you are seeing the icons, but text is better than nothing... The "ugly" blue is by design, and is the same color as the progress bar on the now playing page (sorry, but not interested in a discussion on color choices...everybody's rods and cones are different; some are even non-functional, which is of greater concern to me). The blue row is the playing track, and I colored that row to indicate it as such. There are also different controls for the playing track (play/pause/next) than other tracks (play/down/up/next/delete). This is also by design. I don't know what to say about the slow page load. Mine loads quite snappy... cheers, #!/ben -- bklaas bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19369 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

jtbse Wrote: > Is there any way to use a decoder besides mov123 for AACs or other files > in an mp4 container within Slimserver?I used to use FAAD2 on linux to decode > non-DRM AACs. However, it could not handle ALAC when that was introduced. I now use mplayer to handle transcoding of AAC and ALAC (as well as WMA and RealAudio).Mplayer has been ported to windows so it might be what you are looking for you. I would suggest reviewing some of the posts about AlienBBC, I believe that the new Windows version of the plugin installs a version of mplayer and sets up Slimserver to use it for Real Audio streams. You can then edit your convert.conf file to have it use mplayer for .mov files. Here are the lines I use for transcoding. Code: mov mp3 * * [mplayer] -novideo -vc dummy -vo null -cache 128 -af volume=0,resample=44100:0:1,channels=2 -ao pcm:waveheader:file=/dev/fd/4 $FILE$ 4>&1 1>&2 2>/dev/null | [lame] --silent -q 2 -b $BITRATE$ - - mov wav * * [mplayer] -novideo -vc dummy -vo null -cache 128 -af volume=0,resample=44100:0:1,channels=2 -ao pcm:waveheader:file=/dev/fd/4 $FILE$ 4>&1 1>&2 2>/dev/null These most likely wont work "as is" for you since these are tweaked for my linux box, but they might get you pointed in the right direction. I would also look at the entries AlienBBC makes in the slimserver-custom.conf file for Real Audio to see how the output from mplayer is handled on a windows box. --Tom Malsbury -- malsbury malsbury's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=57 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22971 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi Craig... Yes...I'm familiar with other AAC CLI and .dll-based codecs, but that's really my question. I've used several different ones for file conversions, different players and so forth. Is there any way to use a decoder besides mov123 for AACs or other files in an mp4 container within Slimserver? A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19369 Question: Do you have a 770? - Got it - Want it - Need it - Forget it thanks for all of the ideas. I'll respond to them one at a time... 1) She liked the bigger album display when using Telcanto on an Axim. Overall now playing interface is much better, just liked the a bigger picture. I like big cover art too, but I'm not sure how I'd layout the page if I went any bigger...I'll noodle on this one and add it to my list as an enhancement idea. 2) Same question regarding the Repeat and Random icons - what are they and why can't you click them. Once explained it made sense. Agree with earlier post on not adding text, keep it clean. One idea might be to put a background behind the repeat and random icons so them look like a header rather than a clickable icon? I think what I'm going to do is leave those icons the light gray color when I darken the others (see next request) 3) When you put the 770 down flat (e.g. on a table), the light grey (teal?) icons and text wash out. Maybe another color? yeah, this needs to be done. it's been on my list for some time. 4) If click on Squeezebox's Playlist when it's empty, the image is not sized correctly - scrolls right. what image? Need more info... 5) If click on a Squeezebox's Playlist when it's full of songs, there are not icons for Play, Move Up, Move Down, Next, Remove, etc. Looks like text box image place holders? These basically split the screen in half and causes songs to wrap. The functionality is great! I've seen this under certain circumstances, and I can tell you it's an issue with the Opera browser and not the skin per se. I don't know how I can fix this, but I will see if there's anyway of preloading images into opera's cache (esp. ones that are used repeatedly throughout a page like these) workarounds: configure slimserver through server settings to not display as many items/page. hit the playlist icon a second time when you see this and the images may load on the page refresh. 6) Does not appear to be ability to delete a playlist? Typical situation is when I do a playlist rescan, it pulls playlists from iTunes I don't want so I go in to delete them from Slimserver. It's in the default skin with a second confirmation step. How is "clear" playlist different than "delete" playlist? 6) What does the Download button do when on a Playlist screen? I don't use this feature, but its intention is to export your current playlist as an .m3u file, which could then be saved somewhere on your PC where you could call it up again. I just tried it and it worked fine...items in the .m3u were full file paths to those tracks (not slimserver-specific). BTW, this is your second #6 ;) 7) When you scroll in a playlist, would it be possible to keep the top icon in place. Thinking of something like a frame for the playlist, but sure that's not the right way to do it. Usage example is if you scroll of the bottom of a playlist to force a song to play next (AWESOME FUNCTION!), you then have to scroll all the way back up to get to the Now Playing icon. If I can do it with css, I'll give it a shot. I want to keep this skin frame-free though, so that's not an option. added to my list. 8) Possible to slightly increase font size for the menu on the Settings page? My fat fingers always click the wrong thing should be able to do this with css. on the list 9) When perform a search for a song title (e.g. Civil War by GnR), the result is VERY FAST and more importantly, CORRECT. Can you also show the artist and album? All that shows is the title, so if there's multiple results it would be hard to tell. on the list Idea - I'm getting a 1GB RS-MMC card. Wonder if it's possible to store album images on the card so it pulls those local rather than OTA. Should be quicker? not a chance will I do that one. that's way beyond the scope of this project. thanks for all the input. My list is growing rather than shrinking these days and haven't had much "fun" development time while my paying job has been busy. I hope to get to this stuff reasonably soon though... cheers, #!/ben public to-do list for the skin: http://mcstayinskool.tadalist.com/lists/public/170297 -- bklaas bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19369 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

In my case, the actual lenght of the file name does not matter -- problems only arise when there are two files in the same directory that share the first 63 characters. Too bad... Hi Patrick, I'm a long time user, I have 3 SB1s, and 2 SB3s sprinkled throughtout my home that I love, my wife has learned to love, and I've recently explained to our nanny how to use (our 4 month old son loves listening to classical music in the morning as well). I'm a 34 year old lawyer, I live in downtown Washington DC in a 100 year old Federal Style attached row house. We have about 24,000 songs so we have a big collection. I used to own an Indie Record Store, so we've been able to store our 2000 or so CDs. I've always been a huge music lover, (i still problems go to 4 concerts a month) and owning a Squeezebox has totally changed the way I listen to music and I love it. Back to the first issue, I have an old EPIA Eden machine running as my slimserver, and as I listen to the BBC I use Alien BBC so have to stay down this route. The machine is quiet and lower power. It itself connects to a Bufflo Terastation which is fine, but the slimserver software would not do a thing with it where as the MP3s share was connected as my M: drive and via Media Player or WinAmp plays my MP3's fine. sheesh, even the TwonkyServer I was using for the Netgear MP101 was working fine. I tried the workgroups, user ID's and everything else. In the end I looked at the services again mainly to check that the Windows Firewall was disabled - it was. I saw that the SSDP discovery service was disabled and thought, nothing to loose I'll restart it. Voilia, all working and the slimserver is now working via a UNC address too. To be honest, with lots of the small NAS devices, a 200Mhz or greater PPC or MIPS processor can easily do these tasks. RISC processors can run at far lower speeds and CISC processors. Sheesh, Look how long it took the PPC range to get to GHz speeds after the Intel/AMD race. The late G4 processors in Macs easily outperform a high end PIII. Not sure of the speed of the PPC derivatives in the Xbox, PS3 and GameCube, but they may just about reach 2.3Ghz, no more which is way down on the x86 speeds which they have moved away from. -- poyntzj poyntzj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2628 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22820 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I moved to the Slimdevices from a Netgear MP101 and do not even want to consider going back. Not sure what other options are out there - I stopped after getting the SB. If anyone has a problem with wireless then homeplug ethernet over mains is an option worth looking at. Not too bad these days in price, and the 14Mbps version is more than enough for a couple of SB's. As the MP101 is crap with wireless I had the homeplug kit already so my first SB3 was wired only. It worked well, but I wanted another SB so went wireless. My home WAP is a Belkin Pre-N one. No I have read of all sorts of issues with Belkin and wireless and was unsure, but I soon found that this is simply someone elses kit rebadged. Indeed, it was the same as the Netgear kit, but with a different case and aerial arrangement. All reviews looked good and gave it a better rating over the Netgear. My cottage is made with Ragstone which seems to absorb wifi signals. Using 11b, I cannot get a signal from one room to the next. 11g I can, but the range is limited to about 2 rooms. Using Pre-N, I can now feed a signal into the bedroom with no problems. Moving to the wireless SB3 this week I was pleased to find that the signal was still in the high 60's for a signal rate and no problems at all. -- poyntzj poyntzj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2628 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=16523 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

>From my early days as a Radio Amateur some 44 years ago 2.4Ghz radio was highly experimental and strictly line of site. Today it is regarded as everyday but it still doesn't travel well. There are some materials that it will not penetrate well including some brick and breeze block. I have very intermittant problems with Wi-Fi even using a Netgear router and a laptop. Some days it's very good, other days it's just not reliable. In my opinion it can be totally down to your own environment. Does it have to travel through brick, breeze or just plasteboard. The radio wave tend to scatter when it hits a surface it can't penetrate and will therefore try an alternative route, perhaps through the door, or perhaps through the ceiling until it is bounced down again. Water moisture in the air is likely to change the transmission conditions therefore you can expect the weather to have an effect. My house was built in the 1920's and many of the internal Walls are solid. The type of brick used soaks up water like a sponge and it has taken me nearly 20 years to get this house totally dry. I have neighbours who also you Wi-Fi and it is certainly down to the local weather conditions as to whether I can see their networks and therefore whether they have the potential to interfere. If they are not advertising their SSID which is quite a wise thing to do then you cannot see them and will not know if they are interfering. Some of these problems may be reduced by increased use of the 5Ghz band as this frequency appears to scatter a little more reliably but time will tell and Squeezebox doesn't support this yet. As far as I can tell the Squeezebox is no more reliable or unreliable in my setup as my laptop, in fact I cannot see how it is fair to expect it to magically work, there may be some compatibitiy issues with some other devices but it appears to me that Slim Devices is bending over backwards to try to clear any of these issues at the moment. Slim Server is open source software that is under constant development which means it is always going to be liable to bugs. Serious bugs should be confined to the development version but some minor bugs will remain in the stable version because it is known that these bugs will disappear when the stable version moves on. I have been running Slim Server on WindowsXP over the past year and I reckon this is one of the most stable pieces of open source software I have run for some time and I have been in the IT industry for a good many years. If you want usability and good audio quality then in my opinion there isn't another product out there to come near to Slim Server and Squeezebox. If you are having troubles try eliminating wireless by using a direct connection for a test and do it at a time that you have having problems with the wireless connection. If this is better then don't use Wi-Fi, it is unlikely to be reliable for you whatever product you are using. Look for an alternative. Personally I find the Ethernet over Mains works well in my situation. This has it's own problems, where to plug in the units, it will not work through mains filters and heavy machinery can interfere so you might have problems if you have air conditioning. The final choice is with you, move on to another product if you are convinced to call it a day, it is probably only the audio quality and your bank balance that will suffer. -- MrStan MrStan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1771 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=16523 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
